  • The biggest limiting factor to turkey populations is recruitment of the young. Because of that, the nesting habitat and brooding habitat that poults use right after they hatch is the most important habitat component for turkeys across Mississippi.

Not to be critical, but a realistic question, if this is such a big factor is turkey population why isn't Homochitto National Forest booming with turkeys? We have approximately a 2500 acre lease (Weyerhauser) that we are very limited on what we can do for habit improvement (we can do practically nothing but food plots and predator control) When the wild turkey numbers start tanking 15-20 years ago due to habitat struggles, why didn't Homochitto numbers stay up with all the 1000 's of acres that are burned, disturbed, and managed every year? Please don't take that question as critical, I enjoy the content y'all put out and look forward to every episode. I would love it if we could maintain our property with a lot of the recommendations y'all but forth, but as long as timber companies are ruled by the dollar and not conservation we have to make do with what we have.

It is scary for poults because unlike goslings they cannot retreat to the water for safety.
We have a lot of bugs. I am hoping for poults. The hen has showed up.
