Gotta stick my neck out here and remind folks... Wolf Creek isn't a ski RESORT, it's a ski AREA, which is why it's so great. I agree with the 2 stars as a resort, but would have to give it a solid 4 as a ski area. All the things that it lacks are what make it shine! You certainly won't find an outlet mall, luxury hotels, or much of anything for that matter near: GREAT! You also will have to hike a tiny bit to get to the best runs: GREAT! If you hate what most Colorado ski locations have become and want to find incredible snow, untracked extremes, and nobody else around... Wolf Creek is the dream!!!
thats how it is here on mount hood. no actual resorts. most people stay in portland and drive an hour and a half to just go ride then go home. no shopping. no luxury
Just so you know the stars don’t mean anything. They are just for the thumbs. Respect your points but that’s why there are 10 categories covering everything people want to hear but also the who is this resort for section. 🤘🏼
@@yxngbt387 yeah mid winter. Early season and late season half the time it’s rain and icy. We get it all. East coast ice and western deep powder. But it’s wet powder than you float on versus Champaign pow. And freezing fog is a concern too sometimes. Ice crystals on your goggles is hard to wipe down lol
went to wolf creek in january 2021 and caught a 5 day storm system and it was sick! definitely a more raw mountain, no fancy amenities, but i didnt care about that, i just went for the pow, and boy did wolf creek deliver. great tree riding and steep pow runs with short lift lines. idk if id enjoy wolf creek much if i wasn't there when they got 50 inches in 5 days, but it did not disappoint on the deep pow days i got there.
You gave it a fair score all things considered, but you're right it's the old time retro type vibe that gives WC its cult following... just "raw" and basically the opposite of a vail resort. I own some land in pagosa and I've been working toward getting a house built so I can live my dream of finally being in a mountain town
Once we discovered Wolf Creek about 15 years ago, we never went anywhere else. Part of that is because we have to drive to the mountains from Kansas (10 hrs to WC) and can't make just a quick day or weekend of a trip very easily. What really keeps us coming back is the reason most people don't go...it's pretty remote. That remoteness equates to short lift lines and a feeling like you have the mountain nearly to yourself. Love getting in the deep pow in the trees and finding lines that nobody's tracked up yet. It's almost like adventure skiing but with the safety net of knowing that if anything bad happens, you're not far from help. We almost always stay in South Fork where you won't find luxury hotels or restaurants, but you will find small town hospitality and quiet after a day of hard skiing. So, in short, the reasons that we go to Wolf Creek are the very reasons that it doesn't score too well. 400+ inches is hard to argue about.
My buddies and I have gone to wolf creek for the past 5 years for our annual snowboarding trip and we have loved it every year. It’s a great place to progress your snowboarding with all the different terrain and if you catch a powder day, you’re in for some of the best snowboarding ever. Also, there are hardly ever any long lines; super lowkey spot that offers plenty to do with great views! If you stay in Pagosa, be sure to eat at the Malt Shoppe! Love your videos man! You’ve taught me a lot
This is the place we go to every year. In my opinion, the best place to ski is the place your at right then. I love this ski area and love the content!
We’ve been going to Wolf Creek for over 20 years and love it. If you’re not a fan of crowds and love powder, you’ll love it. Their ski school for kids is called Wolf Pups and all 4 of my kids learned to ski there. Great school staff! I was not afraid to leave the kids in school while I went up the mountain. We stay in Pagosa. The hot springs are a must, as well as the malt shop. Everyone is super friendly.
Living on the ice coast, 1 foot pow days happen once or twice a year so there opening day having powder and not 100% man made snow is incredible to me!
thats how it was for timberline last year. opening day, full ski area was open, every single run and chair lift, 2 terrain parks, and 50 inch base with powder, and no man made snow
@@humaneye7069 it’s snowing every day for a week and over 2-3 feet of snow expected right now. But then next weekend it’s going to switch back to rain and either that’ll just melt away all the fresh snow, or hopefully it’ll ice for a strong base. That’s what sucks about early season. Several feet of pow followed by rain that wipes it all out
wolf creeks biggest + besides the powder is no to very short lift lines. I prefer making turns vs standing in a summit county lift line on the weekend.
You missed it entirely. Yes it is hard to get to. Yes, there is no lodging on the mountain. Yes you have to drive up around 22 miles for Pagosa Springs for a day of skiing. Yes, there are no gondolas. But here is the beauty of Wolf Creek. You don't find the rich ahole that you find at places like Breckenridge or Vale, this is a big plus. You find mainly locals and folks from Texas. No a lot of them are not great skiers but they are not aholes either. It is way worth the effort to get there. The snow is out of this world. It sounds great under your skis. Not only is there a lot of it but it is very very dry snow. I would say the best in the world and I have skied a lot of places. If you can look past the negatives in the first four sentences you will experience some of the best skiing you can imagine. No the Creek is not perfect but it is not a 4 or a 5 out of ten either. If you catch it on a good day you will have a good time. I would caution you it you have a few people in your group it can be a problem. There is not going back to the room or the lodge at noon if you have folks that are going to spend the whole day skiing. You either have to take two cars or some of your party is going to be sitting around for a few hours and this is not cool at all. If you have small kids that are going to be done after a few hour this is not the place for you. You would be better off at a place like Angel Fire that is a family place with easy runs and on the mountain lodging. They love kids at Angel Fire. There are other activities for kids. They have kid friendly slopes and tubing and there is even horseback riding near by. I hope this helps.
Love Wolf Creek! I usually stay on the South Fork side because when it really dumps they close the Pagosa Springs side and it makes the ski area even less crowded (even though it's already pretty mellow)
Absolutely. We chose to stay in Pagosa one time and wouldn't you know it, lost 1/2 a day to the pass being closed. Stayed in South Fork all the other 15 years and skied all day every day.
wolf creek is a champagne powder skier's dream. second to none. powder covered flats would suck for a boarder tho. i ski & board, n wouldn't bother breaking out my snowboard there, the skiing is just so unbelievable. relaxing in pagosa springs after is a must too.
The white ribbon towards the top / bottom is in my opinion pretty beginner, could always walk the one steep section I guess, but depending on if your a new boarder or not, it can be easier to learn how to carve on a steeper grade. Good luck!
@@samrichardson2641 thanks man! I've graduated that part of boarding on to blues and hopefully my next trip, blacks. It's for my friends who'd be learning this time!

Buckhouse, if you didn't try the Green Chili at Wolf Creek's lodge....you didn't truly get the full experience. I hit Wolf Creek every Thanksgiving, coming up from ATX. Hummm, not sure I'm gonna make it to there for this season. Sounds a bit weird. BUT it's nice that it's not a super big busy resort either.....Maybe if I'm visiting my family in CO Springs...we'll see. Great views & review. Thank you!!
Wolf creek is where I learned to ski. It’s my favorite place. (I’m a Texan but done some considerable ski travel) I think you did an awful lot of “dragging” on wolf creek if your goal was to get people to ski it…… lift prices are just what they are…. Considering vail charges upwards of $210 for a ONE DAY TICKET, for people to sit in their “amenity filled lodge”. I also think what you’d require to give wolf creek 10’s on any part of your scores, would be for wolf creek to turn into a lame “vail owned”/Aspen sort of yuppie RESORT. And I personally don’t want to stand in a lift line for a freaking hour at Aspen or vail. They’re not there to provide you chalets, rare filet in the lodge, or walk in, enclosed lifts so you don’t have to sit in the wind. The draw for wolf creek is that it mostly PREVENTS the “vail yuppie” from coming there 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️the terrain and the powder is the draw there. Not the “amenities”. The “comforts” aren’t what someone should judge skiing a location on.
wolf creek the best you can ski anything the flats are a down side but everything else makes up for it. no lift lines with is great. the drive isnt bad just great views and honestly just time to wake up. would give this place a little better score
Wolf Creek is awesome. But it is a little frustrating that on most runs you get like 3 steep turns and then you’re back to the mellow cruisers. The 1600’ vert is misleading- it’s barely possible to ski all of that vert in one run, and would require a huge hike. Realistically maybe 1000’. But definitely a skiers mountain with amazing trees and some (short, often difficult to get to) amazing lines. Not many better spots in CO for an intermediate skier looking to get their toes wet tree skiing or an expert skier looking for secluded powder stashes. Not good at all for sustained fall line skiing or steep/fast groomers.
I’m absolutely blown away by how expensive the annual pass is for Wolf Creek. I could justify it if they included a few days at partner resorts but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

theyre super far south in colorado so storms that completely miss the northern mounains can dump on wolf creek. so its would you rather have 15 inches of fresh or none
If you go snowboarding purely for the mountain and pow then its totally worth going. Just dont expect a terrain park or a hotel within 20 miles. As someone who has spent a ton of time and money at a basin, loveland and copper, I would say wolf creek holds up to all of them and is better in some ways. There are some really gnarly lines at wolf creek that rival A-basin, you can avoid the flat part by hitting the waterfall area. If the snow is bad in summit county, go south to wolf creek and you can always find some pow stashed away.
Have to disagree with u bruddah. I rode Wolf Creek the first week of April and it was the best time I’ve ever had riding. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve never really ridden true powder. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m from California and in April all the snow from the local LA mountains is looong gone. Wolf Creek will be special place for me . It’s definitely not for family. It is in fact for powder lovers, tree-run lovers
My wife ordered me a Johnathan buck house evolution sticker. He sends it in a hand written envelope (straight class), addressed to my wife. But then it clicked and I got a super cool sticker.
I enjoy the videos for covering so many places that are not covered anywhere else, but it's unfortunate that this rating system is so flawed. The scoring organization just doesn't work for comparing so many different types of ski areas. As it is now it doesn't really allow smaller, unique, or non-resort-style locations to shine, since they're continuously knocked for things that don't really apply to them. The reviews mostly cover all the stuff verbally, but it seems silly for chunks of many reviews to be dedicated to amenities that are clearly not important to a given ski location. It's important to note all of this stuff sure, but to give places 1s and 0s for not having resort lodging or a terrain park just seems weird. The main thing is that the overall score feels basically pointless. Since it doesn't weigh anything based on relevance, and is essentially scoring everything against the mythological, budget-friendly, North American super-resort. And while most people would agree a small local hill in Minnesota shouldn't exactly score high, the super-resort with abundant lodging and restaurants isn't exactly a universal ideal that everything needs to be scored against.
They have 7 chairs...... Did you even bother to look at the map. Oh as I type this you blab that the food is mid nothing special. Have you ever been to the Raven's nest??? You can get full pizza!!! You should just stop with your opinions. Especially when it comes to rating views!!!

Well, WC isn’t a resort. All the low scores are positives in my perspective.
