  • Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA, is the largest open pit mine in the world. A great feat of excavation, it has been mined for miles deep and wide to locate a precious needle in this colossal haystack: copper.

    “Necessary for our way of life.” Unarguable. Until you question the chosen way of life that requires this.

    You should include when this clip was originally released / aired. This could be from 2003 for all we know and things could have changed a lot since.

      The main thing I'm hearing that is changing, is that with the move to abandon fossil fuels and the electrification of everything, we would be digging a lot more of these holes for minerals. Also a guy who worked in the mining industry mentioned that this industry moves very very slow and it's very rigid in how things are done, the methods are established and don't budge. It takes around 10 years to establish a mine, and 20 years for it to become profitable. So probably nothing has really changed.

      Here's what has also changed: gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/ We're in trouble and going after lower quality ore is a symptom.

    "If it can't be grown, it has to be mined" - this is not true: Water is not mined or grown. Oil is drilled for. Ammonia is extracted from the air. Find more examples and add them here 😄

    • @Gabor-df1ov
      @Gabor-df1ov 2 месяца назад

      Mining and drilling often comes hand in hand, geologically speaking. There are actually some insitu leaching mining methods when the just basically drill a hole to the ore deposit. Also, this quote refers to harvesting natural resources for material and/or energy. Chemical processes (like ammonia synthesis) is a whole different topic.

      Lol that would be a ridiculous waste of material and set up a huge limit on what could ever be mined. 7 years to target an ore area would turn into 14 years. Come on.

    I'm telling you right now. There nothing exciting about driving an articulated off road dump truck. It's boring, it's horrible on your spine, it's repetitive and a slow progress shift. Literally the exact opposite of anything that can be described as exciting.

    The largest and most destructive. It’s educational videos like these that are important for our future generations to understand the impact that these mining companies have on our environment and our communities. The implementation of policies that will address extreme impacts like these capitalistic companies exploiting our natural resources for their own profit must be created in order to ensure our survival. Climate change is REAL. It is time we take initiative in our efforts to empower the communities who are subjected to this threat.
