  • My B16 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V Turbo project: Make more power than the off-the-shelf kits, for half the price. Even better, Do it using "EBAY" parts. Some knowledge, research, and a quality tune.... And it WORKS! It's been going strong at 330WHP for the past 10,000 miles!

    This was a great build. You basically turned an affordable fun car into a performance machine that can hold its own against a 2017 Honda Civic Type R which costs 3x as much...And your numbers were on a dyno! Imagine rolling up next to one in this thing and slap some humility on their faces. Again, great job. The buyer is going to have all sorts of fun.

      Charlie Chan a turboed car like that doesn’t last long engine wise, there’s not good enough tuning software like there is for Honda. The kid said at full boost the afrs get to the low 10s witch is to much fuel and will wash the cylinder walls dry 💥 “not good”

    I love Spec-V Sentras so much. I had an 02 with an intake and it was a blast! Spec-V was my affordable dream car in HS when I drove an 1988 b12 Sentra.

    Nice build brother. I'm always interested in builds like these when people do their research and do it right. It's always nice to see how well they run when they're taken care of. That's a good horsepower figure as well. Not bad at all. I remember when I first turbod my D15B Civic and drove it for the first time. I was hooked. eBay turbo/manifold/downpipe/wastegate kit for $400 and I pieced the rest together. 440cc DSM injectors, ARP head studs, Felpro MLS head gasket, 3" turbo-back exhaust, and it ran great on 6 psi and would hang with most of the modified imports around here. Now I'm building another B18 block with Eagle H-Beam rods and Wiseco pistons with ARP everything in search of the ever elusive 500 whp mark.

      Boosted B Series EK Right on brother! I think just like many things, peoples inability to complete the job and getting poor results gets blamed on the parts, rather than the fact that they just slap a turbo on and expect the rest to work from there lol.     nice I did the same thing with my 02 specv same kit. actuality just rebuilt the motor for 500whp upgrading from that kit to a Garrett 3076r or precision 6262. my waste gate spiked like that as well. went to a tail gate no more spike.

    I'm in the process of boosting my b15... this video gives me some confidence.. I have a spare care if I run into issues but I absolutely plan on dallying it. So far I got my wideband in and a fuel pump... I'm hoping to run just off a safc2 . But will go full standalone if need be. A ref lash for my car cost like $600. That's like 30% of my build budget

      Fast4SloW 717 if you go over it step by step and try to minimize any weak links and beef stuff up, I dont think you will have any problem with it. use a good pump and injectors and use a good side oil restrictor and drain to keep turbo healthy. As far as tuning, I spent over $1000 between the uprev software license and dyno tuning. However the had some unfamiliar walls to climb with the B16 ecu. From my understanding the b15 ones have been done many more times and are easier. Try talking to 2j racing as far as that goes, they are b15 experts.

    It's too bad this got sold. I love my sentra, I have the SR, but I love it. I love the B16 looks, and how rare a customized one is to find on the streets.

    You're running a slightly bigger turbo than the treadstone kit so it makes sense there'd be a tiny bit more power. For instance my 50 trim .62 ar put down 330whp @ 11psi before I sold it. I'd be curious if you ever ran it at the track to compare trap speeds.
    It too took uprev a good solid year to tune my car correctly. Same issues you had (this was back in 2010 though). My car held strong for the 5 years 30k+ miles I put on it being boosted, + whatever the new kid who bought it has done in the past 2.5 years.
    We found on the dyno going from 2.5" to 3" didn't actually offer any performance gain. Did you dyno test before and after? The DP still bottlenecks the exhaust so their wasn't much top end gain. It was something like 2-4whp, which could easily be dyno variability.
    Also - kit doesn't require losing foglights. Your cars AFR startup is really rough though. Your tuner could have tightened that a bit.
    Cool car though. I miss mine everyday.

      j zap yeah im sure build quality has evolved. it's probably not perfect to the thousandth of an inch, but it's worked with no concern in my instance. and thank you

      540iadicted I ran an eBay turbo on my single cam Civic for 18,000 miles and wanted more torque so I swapped a DOHC B18 into the car and swapped the turbo setup that I put together myself from mostly all eBay parts and ran it for another 10,000 miles before I swapped the turbo for a Turbonetics 60-1. The only reason I swapped the eBay turbo out was because I've been trying to get away from the eBay parts and there's actually nothing wrong with the eBay turbo. I put down 258 whp with the single cam on stock internals and 346 whp on the B18 on 15 psi with stock internals on that eBay turbo. If you take care of it, use a 1mm oil restrictor, use at least a 10an oil drain, and keep your oil changed it'll last. I would've kept running it, but I bought the eBay stuff as a base to build on until I could afford the brand name stuff.

      Boosted B Series EK Absolutely! I have no doubt that it holds more potential with a good high end turbo. But just proving that it can be done just fine without fancy equipment has been the fun of it :)

    Unfortunately without the carb stickers, it'll be impossible to "properly" smog it in California. It's a shame that turbo companies can up market the same assembly for just a carb legal sticker. I like your set-up though. Good job.

    I hope you see this comment. I have a 2012 spec v that is turboed. The issue I have is that sometimes the engine will feel sluggish and lose power. If i turn the car off for a while and drive it again it will drive great. Would you know what the issue could be?

      Does it do it in any specific weather or after driving a long time? Mine has acted like that only a couple times, and only after like a 40+ mile drive on a 90 degree or hotter day. I think heat soak becomes an issue even tho the cold side piping will still stay cool. These engines seem super sensitive to ping/timing, hence the popular knock sensor mod on them, and also the fact that I only get 91 oct here. I believe under these conditions mine pretty severely cuts timing. AFRs sometimes get wacked out too, another thing nissans are so sensitive to. Try doing the AFR self calibration by unplugging maf, allowing to idle for 10 seconds until it smooths itself out, and clear code and plug back in also

      From memory I used a right angle drill and slowly drilled and tapped it for a 1/2npt to 10an fitting

      On the base model the engine is 2.0l its completely different to the spec v which has a 2.5l the exhaust manifold on the spec v is on the front while the base is on the rear making it more difficult i believe

    My goal is to get 250-260whp NA what type of injectors would I need??! My mod list consists of JTW C1 cam, Ti retaniers, Hi rev valve springs and port and polish intake manifold, 2JR 255lph fuel pump, e85, 2JR Hi power I beam rod set, 3in exhaust system, header, high flow KnN air filter, and 2JR lightweight pulley...

      Honestly.. Why lol. It's cost ineffective. But when doing n/a you're gaining power from creating more compression rather than stuffing more air and fuel in the cylinders so you probably wont need terribly big ones, probably 400-500cc would be plenty on pump, maybe 650s for e85 and still have headroom

      All of the stock gauges are how they came with the car, I didn't change them

      I never found much info or availability on the supercharger setup when I had the car. I would say, if you can get a complete and well pieced supercharger system that actually fits the car, it will be easier to work with. Can basically just use bolt on header and exhaust as opposed to custom downpipe and midpipe, and boost control is easier because it directly correlates to the pulley size. However the turbo is much more flexible to use and adjust boost how you want and can definitely be done cheaper

    I own a 2011 Sentra Spec -V and am wanting to boost her as my daily driver. I too live in Arizona up north in Prescott Valley. I want to use mine as a daily driver. Any suggestions, or can you message me back please?

      Buy mine and you will be set to go! Haha. The biggest hurdles are things that take a little fabrication, like the downpipe, since none are really available separate for this application, and the biggest challenge is tuning. i wanted to use the stock ecu and make sure it had no check engine light, passed emissions, and was 100% legit, which means using Uprev and having it dyno tuned. It's not a very common platform for this, so it took about 8 months of trial and error to get the tune running right and having no faults and make good power

      Oh yeah tuning especially would be way easier NA unless you try to do an e85 mix or anything. The downside of NA is that you will need some pretty serious internals to run that power but the stock b16 guts are solid up to mid to high 300s crank and it starts building boost down around 2k under load so torque is good early on

      I have the exact car and yeah as you my man. I just started getting parts for her. My fuel pump went out out of the blue though. But got a 340 lph high flow pump that's compatible with e85. Before I boost her I wanna get her to around 310 horsepower NA

      A 340 may be a little large unless you plan on upgrading components to a larger return style system, as the fuel system may over pressurize and create an artificial rich state that will have to be fought with tuning. If you are going to rebuild from the start then i'd suggest committing to either NA or boost, as you're probably gonna need pistons over 12:1 ratio to try and make that NA, but running that kind of compression under boost could be dangerous even on e85

      The basics are a turbo, a manifold, injectors and an intercooler. But there are variables to all of that including what elevation you live at and what fuel you can get. At a minimum you need intermediate fabrication knowledge and understanding of how to apply forced induction to a NA engine. To find a more off the shelf solution I recommend looking into treadstone performance. They make a full kit to do this, or at least they did back at the time when I built the car

    Think about boosting my base and doing a six speed swap. I’m going to have my car for a while and I can cruise decent on a 4lb tune and open dp slammed

      Transmission before anything, that CVT wont make it 5 miles. I definitely don't recommend open downpipe or wastegate. The noise and resonance doesn't help anything and it can breathe just fine thru an appropriate exhaust that will sound massively better

      The current intake would be taken off to install a turbo, however the SL has thr 2.0 MR20de which is very different to add boost to. If you have the automatic CVT trans, it's not recommended

      The SE-R Spec-V Gen2 QR25 (his car) has stronger rods and revised pistons that bumped his compression up to 10.5:1. His motor is stock but is definitely stronger internals than a standard QR25

      I'm not very familiar with the new generation engines, im sure its possible but thats a pretty strong goal. Id plan on doing rods and pistons, possibly main and rod bolts as well to use that kind of power reliably

      On the base model the engine is 2.0l its completely different to the spec v which has a 2.5l the exhaust manifold on the spec v is on the front while the base is on the rear making it more difficult i believe

      Yes stock qr25 gen 2 internals and factory ignition except using VR38 (R35 GTR) spark plugs for heat range and gap correction

      Yes for NA the manifold may be a point of improvement, but when under boost the manifold runners really dont make a difference unless there is a huge restriction because the air is under pressure to reach where it needs to go rather than relying on being under vacuum to reach the cylinder

      It's all stock for him, just slapped on the turbo kit.
      But his engine is a gen 2 QR25, they came with better internals than gen 1 QR25's did. Gen 2 has stronger connecting rods and a 10.5:1 compression.

      Correct, this is stock. I had it tuned to a power level that would last on a stock engine with moderate use. Don't expect to put 15psi thru it and launch at every light because it won't last long at that rate. The 2nd gen is upgraded and the spec v (manual) also had slightly bumped compression over the regular CVT SE-R

      mid 300s wheel. a while back when my wastegate was too small I spiked to 16psi a few times and that made it slip. That was easily 400whp when I felt that tho

      Oh ok. I have a 2011 spec v and I wanna put her to 300 NA so I was seeing when I would have yo change the clutch out. I don't plan on launching all the time I just wanna give her some good power.

      Damn seriously? And you made 400 whp that's Damn good man. I wanna do full bolts on without doing internals besides like cams and see what she can make. After I get her 300 then ill look at turboing her and make it 400 or maybe 450
