This is the Obscura Altered Delay from Digitech, a pedal that gives you the power to warp, distort, and degrade your delay tones with a range of unique controls purpose designed for deviant sonic manipulation. Four selectable delay types include Analog, Tape, Lo-Fi, and Reverse, all of which can be darkened and degraded to your liking with the stacked Tone/Degrade knobs. There are also stacked controls for Time and Repeats, as well as a dedicated knob for effect level. Tails with buffered bypass can be switched on or off with a conveniently located mini-toggle, and when combined with the pedal's Repeat/Hold mode, this function can result in some truly twisted and mesmerizing ambient textures. Adding further flexibility to the Obscura's compact, feature-rich design is a tap-tempo mode with subdivisions, stereo inputs and outputs, and industry standard 9-volt operation for easy pedalboard integration. Finally, the new Digitech Obscura's soft-click true bypass switching and pristine analog dry path work to keep your original tone unaffected and squeaky clean every time you plug in.
Digitech has definitely stepped up their game in the last year. This ones going on my buy list.
Indeed, even seems another company or at least under new management with a very fresh new perspective of the market
Between Digitech and EHX, people starting out on their "effects adventure" have never had it better.
***** truth. Also: Biyang.
Jonathan Gomez DigiTech is under new management! I took over product development about 3 years ago, and am now also in charge of Marketing.
Then, Tom Cram, congratulations - you appear to be doing a killer job!
Those stacked knobs are great. Having six controls on this type of delay pedal is huge.
10/10 would play, buy, and step on.
With the simple controls, small size, and stereo INS and OUTS makes this my no. 1 delay right now. It sounds incredible warm for a digital pedal too. So impressed.
This guy is so talented. I listen to more his craft than pedals etc.
I like innovative pedals. I have several Electro-Harmonix, TC-Electronic, Mooer, Joyo, Coloursound, Tech 21, Nux, Ibanez, Boss, Behringer etc... I have no Digitech so far. I intended to save money for a Strymon Volante to get new vintage delay/echo sounds without the drawbacks (no T.Rex replicator, thanks !) but was attracted by the nice painting on this pedal and decided to listen to the demos. I was well inspired, this Obscura altered delay has the same fantastic capabilities as the Volante. And something I appreciate it will not be necessary for me to save money and eat only pasta and potatoes during the next six months. You definitely convinced me at 5:45 , that's exactly what I want to be able to do with a new delay pedal. I'm not even sure the Volante does this. The Obscura Altered Delay will be the first Digitech pedal in my home studio !
From Digitech?!?!?! Woe, nice! Never would have imagined!
Just bought this pedal today, and this thing is amazing! Can get beautiful and useful delays but its also great for constructing improv noise soundscape transition pieces between songs!
This is some of the best playing I've ever heard Andy do. Good job on the song selection.
The intro was so perfect!!
That's the best gear demonstration song I've ever heard.
Now I want to make a Folk-Americana band...
Very beautiful playing and very interesting pedal, kudos.
Wow, Digitech has upped their game. This is nice.
Definitely better than their older output of pedals! Plus, looks like their trying to keep up with the boutique market as well with all the new killer graphics and different box chassis! I haven't got one yet but if they keep this up I just might
I like their newer graphics, but not on this particular pedal. Only thing I don't dig about it, though.
This is me 8 yrs in the future and I just plugged this delay in for the first time and I can say it's a great unit!
Pretty cool, I can see that digitech is getting with the times designwise.
Harjawaldar It kind of reminds me of a boutique pedal design
I have to say - This Pedal has Tons of Great Sounds. It is very Versatile. Plus it has Tap Tempo & Subdivisions. Pretty Impressive.
As always, great demo. Already have a collection of various delays, would take something quite unusual to get my attention . . . this one maybe has done just that.
I was waiting for digitech to make a new delay. Amazing.
Too bad its so ugly!... I would add my own graphics.
Very cool pedal. I like the tap delay and reverse effect capability.
Brilliant combination of features and sounds. Seems like a winner.
I put this after a TC Electronic T2 reverb the other day with the reverse setting on the Obscura and set to the repeat/hold mode, with tails switched on. Came up with some really lush ambient sounds. The tap tempo feature feels unusable in a live setting if you have to engage/disengage throughout a song and adjust tempo, but otherwise the pedal has some really great sounds and features. Definitely do not regret purchasing this one; I only wish there was an external tap jack.
As much as this sounds like a cool concept I can tell if I get one I will just wish I was Andy the whole time I'm using it
+MrTubeyWoobey Point well taken, but sometimes, companies design devices that create sounds we already had in our heads!
You can make any pedal sound good bro , love your videos!
Really nice delay, I have it and would recommend. There's good depth of parameter tweaking. Pedal is a bit heavy and well built. Degrade knob is nice. :) After using it and liking the quality I gave the Nautila a shot, both good quality.
imho, this is Digitechs answer to Catalinbread's very popular Belle Epoch and Echorec. Sounds VERY good.. love that it has a tap tempo mode..
Thanks for helping me spend my money , Andy ! :D
Damn. My board is getting a lot more Digitech on it this year. I got a Polara, and I've been looking for another delay with a bit more options. The only thing that could make this pedal better is a loop that effects the delays only.
I ve got polara too and a t rex overdrive too. And the polara is way better
BECAUSE YOU'REEEEEEEEEE GORGEOUSSSSSS... that's what the opening bits reminded me of.
I consider this to be next in line to be my favorite delay pedal of all time. right behind the protone haunted delay.
I've said it before,I love those 2007 Les pauls!
This is everything I've been wanting!!
On my list. So amazing!
yeah andi! man your sound is awesome....here my train is coming...i closed my easy...and saw jimi! :-) cheers raffa form switzerland!
this pedal is sonicly grate ..thank you for posting
Well this is simply revolutionary...
Nice move Digitech
You could put knobs on a dog turd and Andy would make it sound good.
I believe it's pronounced line 6.
I would go for Dr. No effects - Turd Fuzz :D
Would like to see a similar take on a phaser/vibe/trem now that digitech is re-inventing itself and some classic effect concepts.
I love that black strat type that Andy plays in the video? What brand is it?
Digitech has stepped up their game with great new products but try and find one in stores. Trio introduced at NAMM in Jan., still on pre-order. Don't expect Obscura any time soon.
Where's an album of Andy written material I want one
Impressive art work. The repeats sound digital but useful.
+Brian Cullen Of COURSE they sound digital. If you somehow think you're getting a pure analog signal after the demo was 1) digitally recorded, 2) digitally uploaded to RUclips, 3) digitally stored at RUclips, 4) digitally downloaded to your computer, and 5) converted back to analog on your device, you're a total moron.
Great pedal. I have this on one board and RV6 on the other. Total faith in both. Currently £85 from Thomman - if you need a delay just do it!
Ooh that's a classy lead at 0:43
What song is the intro?
I wish I knew how this one does in front of distortion. Some do. I'm using a Marshall 2210 and I don't want to have to run a whole mess of cables from my effect loop just for a delay. I currently use an old DOD FX90 or Ibanez DE-7 and they work in front, A little crunchy and messy but it's cool. The Carbon Copy sounded awful! It would be really nice to have tap tempo though.
I love mine. If only the four delay settings would remember themselves until a knob is turned, a preset of sorts.
Not a fan of reverse mode on any pedal. That said this sounds really good and I'll probably be getting it.
based on this vid I think this pedal is now an amazing deal, rivaling many much more expensive "boutique" peedlas. in playing for real are there any weird or harsh artifacts in the tone?
Now I want it... But I already got 3 delays (timefactor, trex replica and dl4) shitttt!!!
Haha Babybird- Because you're gorgeous!
think I might sell my flashback for this...
Or add it to the flashback ;)
You have went too far.
Nah keep that flashback. Just use the flashback to feed into the obscura or go real weird and plug your flashback into your obscuras stereo and see if you can run a quad delay with degrade and warp
Amazing!
Love the pedal but not the graphics, still considering to buy it though as I have the Digitech Nautila already and love that one too
I wish the LEDs were in the eyes and coloured red 😁
I just received mine and it was used but it seemed to be in perfect condition. Analog and reverse mode works but not low fi and tape. I'm using a standard 9 volt power supply so I'm not sure but do I need a better power supply or something?
Is it better to run this on the board or in the effects loop? Opinions? Thanks.
Sounds like The Clean!
digitechs delays somehow manage to sound good plugged into the front of the head and not the loop.
Was the beginning jam based on an existing song or was it just improv?
+Roger Wright it sounds like the riff from 'Babybird - You're Gorgeous'
Someone call an doctor, because this delay pedal is sick!
i like the sounds of it! how do i engage dotted 8s? is there a switch to switch from quarters to eights? or is the tape delay in tap tempo mode always dotted 8? how do i control the subdivisions?
Benjamin Albers When you are in tap tempo mode the Time knob selects subdivisions.
Tom Cram i see! thanks a ton!
All Hail Andy!!
nice one andy
How do you chain amps? I have two half stacks and four 30 watt amps and I want to run my guitar signal through all of the amps with a staggered delay.
I like the idea of showing the pedal as an insert frame; the lighting unfortunately is directing a lot of glare into the camera, making it harder for those of us with fuzzy vision to see the settings. hat said, this is a really good demo and I want one of these.
Hi, is it DEFINITELY an analogue dry path (mixed with digital delay signal)? Some websites say 'pristine analog dry path', but the official Digitech website doesn't say that at all!! Same question applies to the Digitech Polara. It concerns me that the Digitech website makes no statement about the dry path.
ForViewingOnly Yes, both the Obscura and Polara have an analog dry path.
Should I get this or the Red Witch Violetta?
I want the intro as a song. On vinyl.
Is it really 3 whole seconds to activate the tap? yipe! I'd one second would be plenty of time to prevent accidental tap activation, don't you?
trevor deke bajus No, it's about 1.5 seconds.
For some reason, i definitely don't get these sounds or level of delay when on the same settings as what you show. My LED is also red and not yellow
Same here. I also find that it's a more difficult to control pedal than it should be. It tends to sort of do whatever it wants to, regardless of what you "tell it to".
DMNKLR lol
He probably is running It stereo.
how did u go into tap tempo mode i missed something. did u hold down the button first ?
Glad digitech got away from the toys r us look and has true bypass now
if there is one thing on this pedal that i would want is the dotted 8ths to have a toggle so i'm not sure if i should get this or the tc electronic flashback because the only difference beside the toggle is the fact that you have knobs for tone and degrade... and tails :O
AfternoonConcession I'm pretty sure the Flashback has an internal dip switch for tails. The Hall of Fame does, so I assume the FB does as well. :)
Caleb Owens is right, the Flashback does have a little dipswitch inside that turns tails on or off
He said there are subdivisions on this so maybe just check the digitech site.
that's really what i want in a delay pedal, just a subdivision selector so i don't have to mess with dials too much in between songs, i just want a reverby echo delay and a U2 8ths delay without the hassle of finding sweet spots on knobs
AfternoonConcession yeah from what i gather in the video it seems like you just hold the switch down for different periods of time to access different subdivisions. i have both a flashback and x4, and all i can say is if you do end up getting a flashback try look second hand for an x4 because the audio tap thing isnt 100% accurate. and this sounds amazing whereas to me there are only 2 or 3 setting on the flashback that completely blow me away, and tc has this habbit of releasing new products instead of fixing the buggy ones, even the x4 has its quirks. if the power isnt solid it wipes presets, but tc release the alter ego x4 and the triple delay to replace the x4 so yeah, and this sounds like it can do them all except the space echo sound with 1/4 and dotted 1/8 at the same time. but other than that. this seems like a nice delay. i think it would be better as a second delay, since it cant handle presets, but if you dont intend on using it excessively it looks fine, another good one to look at is the boss dd20. i had it before my x4 and i promise you there are few if any reviews on youtube that show what this thing can do if you actually read the manual, theres a reason its been around so long. but as always look second hand the prices for new musical gear is just plain ridiculous.
sorry for the long post.
-K
I played this in the shop and absolutely hated it sounds good when you play it though, I am a huge fan of the EHX Canyon.
Yeah but it's a shame canyon is mono in and out,too bad.The Obscura sounds better, lusher etc.
What's the song in the beginning?
Improvisation
Would you say this pedal recreates the reverse sound in Starla by the Smashing Pumkings?
+1990EAM yes. pumpkins.
Different colored LED's. Interesting
Is the artwork supposed to look like a royalty free version of a Grateful Dead logo? You could do stuff like that with any old delay pedal back in the day.
When will you have these in store?
DcsOrCity Second week of May.
*Please answer*
I got mine today, but the foot switch doesn't seem to make a click. Is that usual? Because I also don't seem to get it work.
+Bertram Hilhorst It is our new "soft switch" it is designed to be quiet.
delays use a lot of power, make sure you buy the correct recommended power supply
with the right negative or positive ground (as required)or you will destroy your $300 pedal in a few minutes.
"analog dry path" mine sounds like it has but I cant find that in any docs anywhere?
Wait, what happened to Riff of the Day?
I'd rather have a DigiTech DL-8. Why was that discontinued?
ExplodingBody The DL-8, while cool, didn't do what I wanted it to do, plus it was way bigger than it needed to be. So I replaced it with the Obscura.
How do you play that opening riff on the tele
What song is he playing at the beginning? Or was he just improvising?
+SharkTooth57 I wish someone/anyone could help! It sounded fantastic.
oh, I can't recall the name of it. It sounded like a British song from the mid or late 90s. I cant think of the group or the song name right now.
Babybird - You're Gorgeous. 1996. !!! :) the first part reminded me of that anyway.
Whitch power adapter is gonna work with this pedal ? i bought 9vdc adapter but for some reason doesn't work with it
take it to your local music store and see what they have that works
I have a T-Rex power supply that works fine with this pedal.
is there an option to mix in dry signal with the reverse?
+Gregory Strand Only if you have a FX loop with a wet/dry mix knob. Look at the chapman video of this pedal
This pedal or the TC Eletronic Flashback?
+Pedro Costa if you can afford it,buy this.if not get the flashback(i just bought it,would've loved this pedal but it was $100 more @ almost $300)
+Pedro Costa flashback x4
richogem That's a little above my money
Pedro Costa The three presets are too useful to give up, on my opinion. It's like having 3 delay pedals in one, and also a smarter looper.
If you can get it used, you can get a great deal. I got mine used for 180$.
+Pedro Costa TC : nice sounds plus looper but mine fell apart really soon on stage use and that happened with other TC's I have had. Digitech: more solid to my experience.
When I get my pedal out one of my friends calls it my ""Cheating Boxx"" I guess if you think about it he's not far off !!!!!!!
when will it be released?
Mrk00k00dud3 Official release is at Musikmesse on Wednesday, it will be arriving in stores the first week of May.
Aaaaiight time to sell my EHX canyon lol
Whats the name of the song of 1:39?🤟🎸🎸🤟
I want that
What was the intro song???
first song?
we can't hear the original signal for the revers mod ??? …
Because there isn't one. Reverse has wet signal only:)
What is the name of this song in the intro to this video??!?!?!?! If it is an actual song.
I remember coming up with the main melody on the drive into work! I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. The reverse delay filled in the gaps nicely.
Thanks,
Andy
ProGuitarShopDemos this is crazy, cos it sounds exactly like the guitar in You're Gorgeous by Babybird
so this is your original song Andy?
@@ProGuitarShopDemos Have you been inspired by Jay Semko's Due South Theme?
What does the tail do? I cant figure it out, someone explain me pls.
+- Ryz It's a true bypass/Buffer switch. So turns on if tails fade out naturally, or get cut, when the pedal is turned off :)
+AttitudeCastle umm, thanks a lot my friend!
at $150 i think id rather get the echorec or belle epoch. still a great pedal though
Not exactly comparable, and the belle epoch and echorec themselves aren't even the same sort of delay. I've got two echorecs (run in parallel) and I love them dearly but the obscura seems like it would be worth it for lots of applications (in addition to for me).
just checked those since I am looking for another delay to add to my carbon copy, they both sound good, but are more tape delay, and while they sound "as close to the real thing" and all, this has a great control over the amount of repeats. I love the carbon copy, but it just goes from repeats to feeding back, and finding that in between, around 12 o'clock, is fun. I need something that repeats. plus this is true stereo and I run 2 amps
It's a great delay - but no analog dry-through. That's only a problem for some of us.
does it work on battry ?!
No
