    Zoids franchise is underrated, it needs more attention so Takara Tomy can take notice and perhaps it'll encourage them to make a new series targeted to the old fans.

      Amazing designs they've been around since the 80s. The only thing missing here is the original lore not being brought to mainstream media like TV or OVAs. They did release a few anime series but they don't seem to be part of the original lore. Compare that to gundam where there's different universes and timelines, chief among them is the UC timeline.

    You are very right about the fragility of this model, though- this was the fourth HMM model designed (before Repackage Ver.'s were a thing), and it really shows with its structural design flaws. Later Zoids definitely improved with their frame designs (although Ligers typically work better anyway), although it seems in general Kotobukiya polycap quality is dubious at best in the long-term.

    • @BGLoscar

      Aside from this design being old, Kotobukiya's plastic quality and engineering are sub par.. I still bought this and the Blade Liger though LOL..

    With Zoidss HMMs it's best to glue anything that doesn't need to move. When you do that, they're usually rock solid.

    • @thedongmaster8067
      @thedongmaster8067 3 года назад +3

      Most defiantly, once you glue what you need to they are really solid. I've found it best to just play around with it and glue whatever comes off until everything stays on

    I always loved the HMM booklets for all that detail! The concept art is great, especially if you have the old motorized Tomy kits, so you can see where they loaded all that detail into the new versions. And they very likely reused the old photos in the instructions at the end there, although to be fair the old Tomy kits also came with sticker decals, and those never really had a guide either aside from some examples on the box art.
    Generally, the old Zoids kits were meant to be decaled-up by the end user as they saw fit, rather than by adhering to any guide. Adding on the fact that HMM kits are meant to look hyper-detailed even without decals, it's not a huge deal that they wouldn't recommend a specific decal scheme for their kits.

    • @darkhelliadarkfire6109

      I have a bunch of the repackaged version kits and I don't bother with the water decals either, they're a pain in the ass to put on anyways and some of the kits I will not touch unless absolutely necessary.

    About fragility (for any newcomer watching this guide): I just dropped my HMM Geno Breaker (esentially this kit with a new backpack), and while it exploded no piece broke. Putting it back together was oddly relaxing (only after I checked no piece broke, of course lol). Other than that extreme case, the kit is rock solid.

      Having built an RG Zeta and a bunch of HMM Zoid kits, I'd disagree.
      HMM Zoid kits have their issues when handling them largely because of all the stuff designed onto them. You'll see the occasional weak body part connection during articulation of the kits, but its the sharp-bits or canons that give the user hassle.
      With RG Zeta, a pure hand-grenade of a kit, its a nightmare to do anything with it. Its a pain to disassemble. Its a pain to paint. Its a pain to articulate. Its a pain to transform. and.
      And.
      AND a pain to even pose without disaster.
      The worst I get out of an HMM kit is a liger leg falls off. A Genosaurer waist will disconnected. A loose canon will fall off. A liger claw or tooth with nick me a tad. But, it will stand without issue on a counter for the many years you leave them in that one pose you like.
      The same can't be said of the hand-grenades that just get worse and worse over time on the shelf, like RG Zeta.

    Ah Zoids, now THIS is a topic I’m familiar with! Over the years I’ve amassed a huge collection of them from wimpy little Molga all the way up to King Gojulas and even a couple HMMs.
    On the whole…I’m not really a fan of the Kotobukiya Zoids. I’ve always been a fan of the simple but impressive elegance of the originals and the fact that they do more than sit there and look pretty, the “real” Zoids actually move, they’re motorized in some way.
    I have this kit, it’s impressive as hell and made for a hellish but awesome challenge as my first ever Kotobukiya kit.

    I don't have this kit yet but I want it, I do have the Repackaged version of both the Geno Breaker and Burserk Fury. I do have to replace the Geno Breaker due to my previous landlord assulting me with the box after I had started building it so a lot of pieces are missing, which pisses me off since it was like $180 to get. However the Fury surpringly has amazing joints and is very stable. The kits I have are the regular Shield Liger and the DCS-J model which I thought I'd have a bit more issue with since I had the LIger Zero previously(need to replace since that was also broken by a former roommate prior to the landlord situation and it turns out it was a bootleg anyways). Then I have the Gun Sniper W2 repackaged ver, the guns make it a little bit unstable and it feels very fragile but still good, I have the Lightning Saix repackaged as a replacement of an older one which sucked so I was expecting it to also suck but it didn't, then the Pteras Bomber repackaged(that needed glue on a lot of things and i will not move it unless necessary), the Iguan repackaged ver, the Rev Raptor repackaged, the Fang Tiger(ironically has the best joints), the Dark Horn(has the worst joints feels the most fragile will not move unless necessary), the Storm Sworder(another old kit that needs replacing, I got the original not the repackaged version and it shows), and Braad's Command Wolf(I absolutely hate hate hate the joints since the back left leg does not stay on at all, I plan on replacing it with the repackaged version hoping it has better joints). I do have a ZA kit for the Murasame Liger plus a few Takara kits mainly the Hayate Liger, the Mirage Fox, and 3 of the 1/144th scale ones in the Shield Liger MK-2, the Hammer Rock, and the Great Saber, then I have 5 used Hasbro kits with the Shield Liger, the Sledge Head, the Venomous Viper, the Raynos, and the Rev Raptor. Out of them all the ZA Murasame, and the two Kotobukiya HMMs the Burserk Fury and the Fang Tiger were the best ones to build since the joints gave me the least problems and they feel the sturdiest out of them all.

  • @bogrot69
    @bogrot69 2 года назад +1

    To be fair, Kotobukiya does include a section at the beginning of the instruction booklet suggesting you use an adhesive. The Lightning Saix had some sections where it was essential that parts were glued.

    • @darkhelliadarkfire6109
      @darkhelliadarkfire6109 Год назад

      Not so I've had two LIghtning Saix kits, the first was the original, the second the repackaged version. The original did require a lot of glue but that was because I didn't have the proper tools and I was rushing through it, the second repackaged one I got this year did not need any glue at all and is pretty damn sturdy overall, I can certainly pick it up without worrying something will fall off and I can repose it and "play" with it without issue. It's just about taking your time, not rushing, and have the correct tools and for the most part glue isn't needed.

    • @bogrot69
      @bogrot69 Год назад +1

      @@darkhelliadarkfire6109 I'm just referring to sections in the manual like part of the foot assembly where it specifically directed you to use glue. With the kit having swappable claws, it directed you to glue the outer halves of the feet so the claws could be swapped without the feet coming apart/ All in all the Repackaged version went together very nicely without glue and it's a solid build. It doesn't take away from the fact however that the manual suggests using glue for a more sold build . Not sure what you're disputing here.

    I buy both model kits an action figures and I've seen a few people here on RUclips that don't seem to understand the difference. *cough*Mechagaikotsu*cough* model kits even the best ones aren't nearly as sturdy as action figures. the model kit you reviewed in this video fell apart a few times which is to be expected of a model kit. but if that happened to an action figure then that would be a big QC problem, action figures aren't suppose to fall apart simply by you handling them. when it comes to model kits you are the Quality Control, you're the one that has to fix those problems. if there's something about a model kit you built that you don't like then you should fix it. some people don't understand this though.

    • @elchito3
      @elchito3 4 года назад +3

      To be fair to Mecha, he straight up tells you he's reviewing them as they are out of the box mostly because even the most horrible model can be made into something amazing with enough time, talent, and work. I'd also argue that the line between action figure and model kit is becoming a bit obscured seeing as Bandai goes through so much effort to emphasize good articulation and range of motion (just look at the RG line and the recent MG kits). Even the more recent Koto Zoids kits like the Sturm Tyran have some good range of motion and hold up well without the need of glue to stabilize them.

    • @V10Symphony
      @V10Symphony 4 года назад +2

      You definitely got a point, in Mecha's videos the line between action figures and model kits is kinda blurry.
      However, in his first review of a Zoid HMM he gave the kit a positive review even though he said that he used a lot of glue to fix it (which he doesn't normally do for his OOB reviews)

    • @BGLoscar

      I totally disagree with "us" being the quality control.. You're protecting Kotobukiya too much... You're supposed to be satisfied with these types of model kits from the get go... These aren't like Warhammer Model kits where you have to paint and glue together (well at least now they have kits that don't need glue). I have kits from Bandai (SD/HG/MG etc) and Kotobukiya (I have this Geno repackage, Blade liger repackage and even Megaman).. I've also seen other reviews of this kit or just Kotobukiya's kits reviews in general.. Koto and Bandai's quality are worlds apart.. Kotobukiya kits are NOTORIOUS for falling apart because they are using an ancient style of engineering/ designing.. In this day and age, if you're going manufacture kits that are meant to be articulated, wouldn't it make sense to design it so that it doesn't fall apart when the consumer articulates it??
      Bandai improved their kits, they listened to their consumer just look at their RG line.. When that line started it, it just crumbles as you touch it (I have the GP01 FB, man I wanted to throw it away when I assembled it LOL).. Bandai has improved their RG line ever since... Meanwhile in Kotobukiya's side, since they know that people will buy their kits regardless, they just don't give a crap about improving their engineering to be at least on par let alone be better than Bandai... I mean it's working, I have their kits even though I know that their quality isn't as good as Bandai's so there's that LOL...

    • @Press_X_to_doubt
      @Press_X_to_doubt 4 года назад +1

      @@fantastiCkiLler92 Why I don't get is why Kotobukiya can't make their kits as good as Bandai is. I mean in terms of plastic quality and construction integrity. Sure Kotobukiya is good on model details but I won't spend money on a grenade that explodes every time you pose it. Plus they're so expensive compared to Bandai so I expect a better quality kit.
      Does it have something to do with intellectual property thing or its just a hubris? "Oh model kits are supposed to be glued like this and that. It's not a LEGO!" Things like that.

  • @ericksoler1221

    I love Zoids and the design of the HMM models but I gave up on them for a couple reasons.
    1) They were uber expensive until these repackaged versions came out
    2) Lots of them are insufferable hand Grenades that fall apart wayyyyyyyyy to easy (I'm looking at you Gun Sniper Leena Special).
    3) The builds are unnecessary long even though I loved building them I gotta admit some parts are just like why?
    I will probably buy some in the future just cause how much I use to love Zoids and they are such amazing display pieces but for now my priority are the new Digimon Figure Arts Amplified Kits

      The reason the Beserk Fuhrer isn't more expensive is because 1) its not as iconic as the Geno Saurer and 2) even though it's bigger it doesn't have more armaments and the joints are far less prone to popping off plus it's a relatively newer kit.

As far as the BL zoids kits go, I honestly wouldn't bother. The BL Liger I built needed every single peg hole re-drilling and the plastic was brittle as hell. If you're determined to get one, check out the Supernova ones, the plastic quality is decent and they're original designs, not cheap mold rips.

    Are you telling me that this expensive pile of plastic bits and bobs doesn't have a battery operated articulation engine with lights and integrated weapons? So you are paying for a static model that you can articulate...???
    That's not the Zoids I grew up with! The Zoids in my day (of MAD THUNDER VINTAGE ) ALL had either battery powered engines or Windup Clockwork motors ...that showed their fantastic articulation of cogs , gears and pistons as they moved, brandished active weapons , opened jaws, spun their horns , flashed lighted eyes and all in all were beautifully made models that were powered to show just how much detail and work had gone into their movements and actions.
    But now you are paying big money for a static Model that you advise to glue some parts of it because they don't hold...despite not even MOVING!
    Geez people...seems people accept a lot less for their money these days ~

    The, "it's a model kit", defense doesn't work as well when you have the advances in kits we've seen in the last decade. They were lazy/cheap and reissued old kits without updating any of the issues. Kits that fall apart like this, shouldn't be this expensive. I don't need it to be a toy, but I would like to be able to touch it without it exploding.
    I have this problem with a lot of Kotobukiya stuff. It seems incredibly over priced for what you get.
