What helped me a lot was someone telling me that it's like saying "l" (as in love) and "y" (as in yes) at the same time. When I tried it I naturally started moving my tongue in the position you described in the video and I've actually started getting the hang of it!
Thank you SO much for sharing this! I can finally say it now. Or closer than I was saying it before. My first language is Spanish and we don't have that sound in Spanish so I was having such a difficult time with it. Thank you!

We have this sound in some slavic languages - LJ. Foreigners have a hard time with it. It's just an L pronounced with your tongue pressed against your upper palate. I think a lot of the Italian words with GL are mispronounced by people.
I almost never leave compliments on language videos, but this was truly useful. People think making unusual sounds is a matter of listening, when it's really a physical exercise you can learn the same way you learn a movement in a sport or a sequence of controller maneuvers in a video game. I've asked dozens of Italians to help me with this sound and they have always refused to understand what I'm asking. It won't help me like the language, but at least I'll suffer a little less.
Refuse? Ok quick you explain the physical process involved in balancing while riding a bike to someone who can’t ride a bike. Just because a person can do it doesn’t mean they can explain it in words. The explanation for the physical process of making sounds like this was only even invented in the recent past. Let’s respect this teachers expertise and not demand it of random non qualified people and accuse them of refusing.
@@M_SC I can tell the difference between when someone at least tries to help and finds they can't do something and when they are simply dismissing my problems because they can't be bothered. The majority of Italians I've met fall into the latter category. And in general, in the full decade I've lived in this country, I've been told more times than I've heard the word 'mangiare' (= a lot of times) that my accent is "cute" so why bother. Easier to tell me that than to take the time from their all-important meal planning activities to help a foreigner. So. Let's respect my ability to judge how people respond to me and not demand that I mince words to please my environment if I don't feel like it. -- Lucrezia is exempted from this. She's a treasure.
I've been learning Italian for a month and I was going bananas trying to pronnounce the sound "gli". As soon as I've watched this video I've been able to do it! Grazie mille!!

@@lucreziaoddone I would like to know how you would write the phonetic spelling in a book. Separating the "l" and the "y" leads the reader to pronounce "gli" incorrectly. Yet, that's how all the books write it. There has to be a better way.
@@InfiniteUniverse88 In IPA (the International Phonetic Alphabet) the symbol used is ʎ. So "gli" is spelled out as ʎi. When ʎ is in the middle of a word, it's doubled, so "figlio" would is spelled fiʎ ʎo. That gives you more time to pronounce it!

I speak both spanish and English. I never turn on subtitles anymore because I keep learning more and more everyday plus I have the spanish language so a lot of words are the same and others are similar. thank you so much for teaching us! I really like your channel!
Magnifica spiegazione! Io parlo lo spagnolo e per fortuna abbiamo lo stesso suono e si scrive "LL" doppia ele. Talla = Taglia, ma attualmente la maggior parte dei paesi ispanici parlanti lo pronunciano come se fosse "Y".
In Portuguese we also have that same sound, but with the letters LH, for example gli would be lhi, gla would be lha. I'm so happy with that, for those who have Portuguese as their native language, it's not difficult to learn italian. ❤️❤️🇧🇷
@H P wow How cool, there are several equal sounds between Italian and Portuguese, for example: GN would be the equivalent of NH, and CH has the sound for us of QU. The word Gnocchi here in Brazil we write Nhoque 😊❤️

I'll try. I always had had that doubt. I've seen on other videos that "gli" sounds like a "lya" in Spanish (I'm an Spanish speaker) for example famiglia -familya-. But the way you have taught us makes more sense for me. Grazie mille Lucrezia. Saludos desde Venezuela 🇻🇪
In a way, the equivalent to gl in Spanish is ll. The problem is that few native Spanish speakers maintain the original pronunciation, which remains common only in Castilla. In most other places ll has derived to y, i or even sh (Argentina - Uruguay). So pronouncing gl correctly requires some practice.

Ciao Lucrezia, è da anni che parlo l'italiano e pensavo sempre si pronunciasse più come una doppia /j/. Sono portoghese e percepisco subito la differenza del /j/e /λ/, e ho sentito tante persone a dire /j/, un po' come chi pronuncia zucchero con la 'dz' invece di 'tz'. Pensavo fosse elementare questo video, e in effetti mi ha aiutato!
Grazie! The strategy you used of explicitly explaining how to move the tongue and the rest of the mouth is very commonly used by speech/language pathologists (or speech therapists) here in the US; it is a very good strategy!

È molto simile a "lh" in portoghese, ma come madrelingua pronuncia questo suono in portoghese con la mia lingua in alto, ma ora so che in italiano devo farlo con la mia lingua sul dente inferiore! Ho più difficoltà a dire "Li" perché in portoghese tutti i Li diventano "Gli", ma questa lezione mi ha aiutato a identificare i movimenti che devo fare per pronunciare, grazie! Sei fantastica

Anche se arrivo "un po' tardi" è molto utile perché sebbene io non abbia troppa difficoltà in generale con la pronuncia in italiano (trovo alcune parole simili allo spagnolo), il "gli" mi costava di più e non riuscivo a pronunciarlo correttamente ma adesso facendo questo esercizio è incredibile che già in 5 minuti lo faccia meglio 😂

Is gli similar to making the “y” + the “ee” sound in English? As in “Oh YE of little faith?”. Sorry, that’s the best example I could come up with.

Prendi la "Y" della parola inglese "yesterday" e aggiungi una L. Pronuncialo come YL.
Oppure prova a pronunciare la L e poi stringi i denti in modo tale che la lingua si schiacci.

As a native Spanish speaker other Italian sounds are easy to pronounce, but this one is a bit harder! Thank you for the explanation!

Grazie per questa spiegazione! La prima volta che ho pronunciato el "gli" davanti a un italiano mi ha detto "come lo hai fatto?". Allora, dopo questa lezione, ho scoperto che non lo pronunciava bene!

Anche se arrivo "un po' tardi" è molto utile perché sebbene io non abbia troppa difficoltà in generale con la pronuncia in italiano (trovo alcune parole simili allo spagnolo), il "gli" mi costava di più e non riuscivo a pronunciarlo correttamente ma adesso facendo questo esercizio è incredibile che già in 5 minuti lo faccia meglio 😂
