Why thank you, hoping to complete this weekend - have it a little roofless at the moment lol

I would put pressure treated two by fours from leg to leg or underneath them as high as yours is I would go on extra foot both ways that could blow over on your babies 😢

Bracing the legs would absolutely be a good idea if I was to build a coop like this again. When I tore it down for the move, the legs were definitely a weak point, good catch.

That’s a lot of wood I’m thinking 6 legs I did the miter cuts both ways on the legs to keep them straight

It was only a 4' x 8', and had 2"x6" framing holding the weight across the bottom. It was more than sturdy enough to even hold me and Caroline without sagging.

Did you have any issues not having the posts anchored into the ground? im in Canada as well and wondering about how well it holds up to the heavy winds ect.

Not really. It was a very sheltered area, with trees, the house, the garage and fence giving a good wind break on all sides. On our new property it would have to be a consideration, depending on where we would want to put it up.
One of the permaculture ideals I've been following is observation - to recognize where the wind, sun and water affect the property, and plan layouts and placements based on what you see from that. Just as I wouldn't place this in a position to take the heavier winds we get on the farm here, I also wouldn't place it in an area where we get seasonal flooding.

How many square feet do you per chicken?

    • @pikehomestead

For a set up with an outdoor run, the coop should be about 2 square feet per bird. This set up was 2.5 per bird when I built it for the 13 chicks we had. For the outdoor run sizing, you want at least 4 sq ft per bird, and larger is better for your egg layer flock, they will range a fairly large area if it's available to them.

It has been a year. Anything on the coop you wish you had done different?

For what we had at the time, probably not a lot. I had planned to add stairs at the access door, and we probably would have needed to run power to it for a heater in the winter of we didn't manage to find a homestead of our own and move to where we have a heated barn.
That said, if we had sought to increase our flock at all, it was too small to do much growth, even after we cut our rooster numbers in half. But, for what we were able to do on that 1 acre rental, it was serviceable enough for the few months we actually used it.

Assuming you are referring to when he had the hen on him? No chance. We'd been handling these birds daily since they were a day or two old - and that one in particular is a calm and gentle girl, content to just sit there on our shoulders - it's why we named her Chip. Two years later, she's the calm matriarch of our flock, and still likes attention from us, even though she keeps her distance a little more now.
