As a Lightning owner, serious towing is done with a 3/4 or half ton. All the towing I do with my Lightning is the occasional small boat or jet ski and not more than 100 miles which is never an issue. Traded in my 3500 diesel because I never needed the capacity of the truck
@krisbaker9427 a half ton will handle a utility trailer, bass boat or small camper, but Inefficient as heck and with very short legs due to smaller fuel tanks. Same as the lightning it's enough for short distance type stuff but if your wanting to take a 30' camper across country you're pushing that truck to its limits and with questionable safety under adverse conditions. Half tons are designed with suburban family types and construction workers in mind. Ranchers, light cargo and heavy equipment movers will be using bigger trucks.
I'm on week 4 of my Lightning Lariet. I'm in love. Perfect for me. Not towing. Not driving cross country in it. Only will be charging at home for pennies. It's wonderful. Oh, and I'm addicted to the torque. Feels like I'm young again.
All in all, I have nothing to say bad about my Lightning, other than the range of my Standard range. Ford is doing all they can to make my truck better and better too.
I own a Lightning. Excellent video and fair. It's funny about the charging speed though. I live in the middle of rural nowhere in Canada and I never use fast charging since I wake up every morning with a full truck. I have no garage and winter is, well, WINTER here. I have three local friends, all with Lightnings, and, like me, all of them use them for their business. Range and charging has never been a problem. If any of us had to tow on a regular basis, however, that would like change big time. Keep up the great work!
Still waiting for a truck with an 8 foot bed that sells at a reasonible price. Most of the Electric trucks I see are being used as a weekend warrior vehicle, not a work truck. The F150 is the closest I have seen, but I dont want to haul loads with my tailgate down
Would you try to tow your Airstream with a Mazda Miata? Nope. Would you race your F350 against a Corvette? Nope. No vehicle is best for all use cases. The Ford Lightning is a nice truck, but of course doesn't have an 8 foot bed. If you need an 8 foot bed, get a nice used pickup.
@@billsrelectric I own a gas F150 and it has an 8 foot bed and a single cab, I don't think wanting a similarly equiped lightning is unreasonable. I seems you do, but it's not clear why.
The truth of the matter is that there aren’t many 8 ft bed f150s out there. People who need them, need them. But most get the short bed crew cab version.
@@dmandman9 I am fine with being a corner case. When I am at the lumber yard picking up materials, the other customers are driving trucks with 8 foot beds. My point is this is a barrier to me buying this truck and it is my only known barrier unless it can't be outfitted with contractor racks.. I like everything else about it. The Lightning has the power to haul, just not the dimensional space. Its not like the chassis could not accommodate my use case. The lack of an 8 foot bed option is a con that Alex did not mention, so I offerred it up.
@@squirrelrelocator I had a F150 with the 157" wheelbase, sold it to take delivery of my 2023 Ford Lightning. Do I wish it had a longer bed? Sure. But my tailgates, moving stuff and towing my boat have not been a problem with the Lightning. If you need an 8 foot bed, an Electric Truck is not going to be a fit for you.
Good video. I see these electric trucks being used for local contractors. My wife and I just had new flooring done. The contractor drives an F150 (of course!) and his day usually involves trips of less than 50 miles, with jaunts to Home Depot or a contractor supply warehouse. I keep reading about people wanting to tow. I agree towing is not there yet. I had a 2006 Chevy Avalanche, which I used to tow a tent trailer on road trips. We'd regularly drive 400 miles or more in one stretch, even with the trailer. The EV truck manufacturers need to stress that towing is a no-go on these.
I'd consider buying an XLT model but full size pick ups do not fit in my garage. My two car garage is wide enough but only 19' of depth. Long gone are single cab pick ups. It's just me and with the frunk, I don't need a back seat. A bench seat would be fine also.with the pull down center cup holder. Maybe a mid size EV pickup is in the works.
Once gas is expensive enough people will want EVs. ATM it's still subsidized to extremes. BTW lightning is available in Canada for years. Not the only easy mistake I heard in this video. If they can double the range I'd buy one.
Pros and cons are a bit off. Payload won't affect range all that much. Trailer towing will. It's more about aerodynamics. And that one is a valid con, if you like to tow trailers long distance. Off-roading meanwhile I would say is irrelevant mostly. Are you really going to off-road for 200 miles? I seriously doubt it. Off-roading might be at an average 30 MPH. While the rocky roads might lower range, at the low speeds you are not impacted by the biggest range killer, speed. Now, as for charging speed goes, while a higher max charge rate would be nice, it is sufficient at 150 KW. A Tesla Model 3 can charge at 250 KW, but only when at low charage; that charge rate quickly drops back to 150 KW or less after getting above maybe 30 or 40% charge. So while it could be better, it's not that bad having a max of 150 KW. You can still list it as a con, but only a minor one.
I just bought a new Ford lightning and found out that it's going to cost you an extra $500 just to get the cord so that you can plug the machine in. Holy living poop stick! Ford has lost their mind.
Oh and it gets so much worse! Sun run didn't send me my charger for over 2 months. Which cost me over $1,000 worth of extra charging that was needed because I couldn't charge my stuff at home until I purchased the mobile charger which still wasn't good enough to get me a charge at the level you need. So if you do not have the ability to do level two charging do not purchase under any circumstance the ford lightning. Do not purchase anything from Ford because though they finally got me my son run Ford Pro charger they have done nothing to make my horrible experience any better! I am thousands of dollars down the drain and I blame it all on Ford because they are the ones who chose sunrun and they are the ones who decided to not make sure everything with their dealers is even correct. So I wouldn't purchase anything for it at all! If I could do it all over again I would purchase a Tesla! I hear you have almost no problems purchasing it's the quality afterwards and I would deal with that happily any day over the experience that I had with Ford.
I think Ford is on the right track. Granted I will not be getting one any time soon as I don't need 4 doors and a short bed. I need a 2 door and a long bed and I would like as much battery as can be packed between the rails. Because it's a TRUCK and I will use it like a truck, it will pull a boat, carry sheetrock, plywood (overloading it ) and any thing else I may need but after driving trucks for over 40 years I can not think of even one time " I " needed 4 doors to haul more people. I could see jump seats on a cab and a half but not 4 doors. Now it just a fancy F150 soccer mom truck. We already have an SUV thank you. I will meet you at the job site but I'm not your Uber driver.

My huge concerns. Terrible charging compared to Tesla. And Ford loses -$33,000 per truck. So if built 2 million Ford goes under. They not shutting EV production down because people do not like. They shut down charge problem and losing crazy money.
Why no one carries a 7,000+ watts 240 volt capable inverter generator on the bed of these EV trucks? for example the A-iPower GXS7100iRD 7100W Dual Fuel Inverter Generator sold in Costco would be a great choice since it burns 3 gallons of gasoline every 11 hours. With the generator on the truck bed you can easily skip the darned charging stations and do very long roadtrips...
