    Glad more usb dynamic mics are hitting the market, for majority of new streamers and content creators the usual condenser mics recommended in guides are awful without a decent room setup/treatment. Dynamics are so much more forgiving.
    I'm jealous of the usb c connector, the MV7 using a micro cable is criminal

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +2

      The more options, the better. Also, the micro cable was weird, but I think they did it to have some continuity on all their motiv mics. Still, would have been nice with USB-C.

    I gritted my teeth listening until you showed the factory response. I hear that 8dB mountain all over the place. Painful and unlike any AT mics I have known. Interestingly, the analog output sounds the same, protecting the dignity of the DAC inside. I honestly don’t remember any mic so extremely hyped, and hyped right in the ‘don’t go there’ zone. A giant, sharp boost in the 3kHz area should scare the crap out of any mixer. AT’s legendary build quality deserves a much better home.

    The hypercardioid dynamic USB mic market is pretty small but growing, and I think that's a good thing. I can see a lot of people in noisier environments (like an apartment building or dorm) using something like this as a plug-and-play solution to streaming or podcasting. I wouldn't use this for voiceover, but the reasonable alternative is a headset and this blows most headset mics out of the water.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +4

      Oh yeah, if you're deciding between a headset microphone and this, I think it'd be a clear choice between the two in most cases.

    • @McMilesE

      Would you use this for voiceover in a treated space though, why or why not?

    • @Schmuddel
      @Schmuddel 2 месяца назад

      @@McMilesE I don't think it makes sense to use a USB microphone in a treated space, the USB conversion will always result in an unacceptable loss in audio quality. You need a real audio interface to get an appropriate A/D conversion.

    To my ears, the AT2040 USB actually sounds better than the Podmic and the MV7. It feels more neutral in the lower mids. There are still better sounding mics, but in my opinion it's absolutely useable for a podcast. But of course, audio is very subjective!

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +32

      Thank you so much for the comment. In the lower mids I agree it is more controlled and less bassy sounding. For some people that will be what they prefer and others will like the more beefy low end. If someone enjoys the sound of this over the other dynamics, then I have no doubt they could make a great sounding podcast with it. This channel is first and foremost about letting people hear the gear that's being covered, and then admittedly, me nitpicking the gear. The average consumer who Is just watching or listening to a podcast or RUclips video most likely couldn't tell if you were using a $20 XM8500, $150 AT2040USB, or $3700 U87. I think the selection of a mic comes down to personal preference, feature set, and if the microphone will make your production easier.
      Also, that's what's so great about audio in my opinion. There are a lot of people who understand it's subjective and are all about supporting people in finding the right gear for them and there's very little elitism to it.
      Thanks again for the comment.

    Such a great review and so few likes and comments.
    I wanted to do voice-overs for my videos. I was deciding between the AT2020 and AT2040, and a sound engineer I know recommended the AT2040 since I don't have a specially prepared room for a condenser mic. I purchased the XLR version of this mic in Europe for about $90 and the Presonus Audiobox 96 for $100. I don't think my voice has ever sounded so great. I am actually very satisfied.

  • @DapperDanLovesYou

    I thought the sound was _fine enough,_ but there is a *noticeable* hiss on the AT2040USB compared to every other mic you showed. I prefer the sound of the Q2U or the ATR2100, and at half the price, it's an obvious recommendation for recording on a budget!

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +5

      Yeah the sound is fine, I just wan't a fan of it. And there is a LOT of competition in this market for USB Dynamic mics, so I think a microphone has to offer something pretty special in order to stand out.
      The Q2u cult exists for a reason. Yes it's limited in function and specs, but 8+ years later it still holds its own.

    Actually think the 2040USB sounds better than the XLR. Or maybe I’ve lost my mind and they sound the same. Either way, it’s fine. I really think the Fifine kicks its butt though. Unfortunately it's often a case of "what will this sound like when I personally use it?" Which can never be answered even by the best of reviews; you really have to get the mic and judge for yourselves. I enjoy your channel immensely--but I'm currently using the XLR version and it sounds fantastic going through a cloudlifter and preamp--although I'm really happy AT decided to make a USB version as well, which will be hella useful for people wanting a little less gear on the go or who don't want to drop coin on a Scarlett Solo. Does the SM7B sound better? Yes, but not 4x the value better, which is why the AT is probably the best overall value from a price-to-quality ratio.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 месяцев назад +2

      It’s all to each their own. If the mic works well for your voice and your preferences that’s amazing. I include all the samples so that no one has to trust what I say or even listen to my opinion. They can hear the audio samples and make a determination for themselves based on that information and shut off the video before I share my thoughts during the pros/cons/opinions section. I also have the section on that channel called GET A SECOND OPINION because I want people to get multiple opinions and hear as many samples as they can to help make a more informed decision on gear.

    It seems your sound preferences lean away from Audio Technica mics in general towards warmer, darker mics. Many Shure mics, for example and the tube condensers. It is not at all a bad thing but a preference choice. I have been criticized for liking Audio Technica mics, and the RE 320. But it all I suppose is personal preference. Thank you for doing these videos.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +2

      Yeah. I'm starting to realize that AT mics are not amongst my favorite, but they have made some fantastic mics. This is exactly why I share all the audio samples though. I want people to be able to hear how the microphones perform without me interjecting my thoughts, that way they can make up their own mind. Then I give the announcement that my opinion is coming so people can click off if the don't want to hear it. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on it.
      As far as you being criticized for your preferences, that is insane. If you found a mic that you like the sound of for what you're recording and you aren't getting complaints from your listeners that the sound is painful or distracting, people should butt out of it. Happy recording!

      I don't necessarily think $150 for a USB mic is a ripoff. I just think you need to know what you're buying, why you're buying it, and if it's the right choice for you. If you're just willy nilly throwing $150 at a bunch of USB mics then that can add up quickly. $150 for a mic for voice calls at work that will work for 8 years would seem like money well spent to me. So I think it's a bit more nuanced than $150 being a ripoff for a usb mic. But I do appreciate you sharing your thoughts on it, it's always fun to hear.

I like they way you describe it as 'artificial' - that is kind of what I am hearing as well. Also, at times the esses can be piercing. I prefer several of the other mics you contrasted against. The Maono PD200X ($60) or the Fifine K688 ($70) that was featured as one of the sound comparison mics in this video. They're basically the same feature-wise, with the PD200X pulling ahead slightly because of the optional Maono software, optional LED/RGB ring, and black & white variations. But again, these mics are so similar in pretty much every aspect that it's really just down to which you find most pleasing aesthetically.
      I suppose a "bonus" alternative would be the Fifine AM8 ($55) if you prefer the form factor on that one.

      As far as $50 with USB-C....that's hard. Razer Seiren Mini I think has USB C but it was also kind of a proprietary connector that fit into the mic. The K688 was USBC, I wouldn't recommend the Tonor TD510. off the top of my head I can't think of any other USB-C mics that I've covered that are around $50. I believe that ObscureMics has done a lot of videos on the more affordable USB mics so there may be some good recommendations on his channel.

      Many thanks everyone for the replies. After further research, I came to the conclusion that what I want is a super cardioid (or hyper cardioid, I believe these terms are synonyms) USB dynamic mic. Coincidentally, this AT2040USB ticks all of these boxes. Raising the budget from $50 to $150, do I have any other choice other than this mic? I mainly would like my mic to pick up as less background noise as possible, I realized that's kinda the most important thing for me, close second is convenience (hence the USB part). Thanks again to whoever will try to help me. Great channel Bandrew!

      @@DouglasWhitcomb Every mic suggested in this thread so far, with the exception of the Razer Seiren Mini that Podcastage mentioned, ticks those boxes for half the price of a 2040, if not less. And to be quite blunt the 2040 has subpar sound quality for the price point, a sentiment that most reviews seem to echo, including this one. Unless you're truly in love with the aesthetics you can do better for cheaper. When I stumbled into this space 3 years ago looking for a microphone I did my due diligence and came up with a list of wants/needs similar to yours but it was slim pickings. At the time a 2040 would have been a godsend but now it doesn't even rate because the competition in the "budget" range is absurd.
      Affordable, USB, dynamic, and solid noise rejection - that's what you're looking for. Which is exactly what I suggested earlier: Fifine K688 or Maono PD200X. They even look nice. These are the kind of offerings I was searching for 3 years ago. Shit, you're actually in luck. The Deity VO-7U just went on sale for half the normal price on Amazon: $85 for just the mic or $100 for the microphone + windscreen + boom arm. As long as it remains at that price I'd absolutely put it above the former two.
      Don't take my word for it though, plenty of reviews for all three.

    With how competitive the microphone market is, I'm really surprised that nobody has anything that out-shines the V7 or SM58 (in terms of sound) until you get to the $400 price range. Not that this mic is horrible, I think it sounds "ok" but it sounds noticeably worse than the V7 imo.

      The thing that shocks me is that I don't think that sE Electronics even beat the sE V7 with their broadcast style mics. If they could have thrown the V7 into a broadcast body and charged $120, $130....GET OUTTA TOWN!

      Realmente depende de qué micrófono te guste más. No puedo decirte cuál es mejor porque el tono es muy subjetivo. En cuanto a más ganancia disponible, ese sería el AT2040. Si miras mis revisiones de ambos micrófonos, el K688 se configuró al 100%, mientras que el AT2040 se configuró al 40%.

      Just listened to the last 2 dynamic mic reviews and it's pretty comparable to the K688 and EM99b. Each mic just seems to excentuate a different frequency of the keyboard, but the Voice to Keyboard noise seems comparable.

    If you want to use a mic like this directly into my camera is the possible or do I need to record into my computer and sync in post?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +1

      I did a video on connecting USB mics to cameras, and that would be through the headphone output. But I really don't think it's the best option because if the headphone amp is at all noisy or if the camera input is at all noisy you're going to be introducing that into the recording as well. I think recording the mic to your computer and then syncing the audio & video in post is the best option.
      I know many people don't like the idea of this (I actually fought it for a while), but then I learned how easy it was. Here's a short that I made covering it: ruclips.net/user/shortsSoEqx11g9NQ
      The only thing that I would change is that you shouldn't sync the recorded audio only to the video's wave form. You should then verify that the visual component of the video matches up with your audio because they can sometimes differ.

      Headphones that over exaggerate the bass I mean often they just kind of muddy everything up, if you want your headphones to sound like you're at a car stereo competition sure but for average listening they're not always the greatest in my opinion, I like to find headphones with a flat response that don't boost the base of the trouble or anything they just keep it neutral sounding, it sucks when the base is so overpowering it's drowning out all the details and I ended stuff in your audio

    • @RedBeardedRabbit
      @RedBeardedRabbit Год назад +1

      @@Podcastage To be fair, this is mostly the fault of my WH1000-XM3 - they are about +5 dB over neutral below 200Hz (RTings measurement). Quite a bit, especially in the 100-200Hz region, so they're likely emphasizing the exact areas this mic is already boosted in.
