I discovered Wonderhussy on here about 4 - 5 months ago. I e- mailed her twice, never expecting an answer as she seems to stay rather busy, and obviously gets plenty of fan mail, questions and inquiries etc. She wrote right back both times and was very friendly and down to earth. A small thing maybe, but appreciated and cool none the less.
Hi I’ve been following her since she had maybe a thousand or 2 subscribers. She’s really wonderful. Such a great storyteller. I’m glad you found her. She’s one of my Shero’s in life.💙

That registration number on the fuselage of Space Ship One is N328KF. It stands for “328 thousand feet” which was the required altitude needed to win the Ansari X Prize.
The 10 million dollar prize was offered to the first private company to go to space in a reusable vehicle, multiple times. Space was defined as 328,000 feet or 100 kilometers altitude.

I was a crane operator in Hawaii before i retired . I worked on installing a wind farm only 30 of them . 330 feet tall not counting the blades . The blades were 40 feet long and weighed 40,000 pounds . The blades hub weighed 80,000 pounds . The generator weighed 190,000 pounds . The sections of the tower weighed different . Bottom section weighed apx 80,000 pounds top section apx 40,000 pounds middle sections in between . Cost was around 1 million dollars each .

Disgusting. What a horrible way to help deface our once-beautiful planet and waste precious resources on failed technology. Actually, it's obscene, especially as these massive lumps of metal can't be recycled and must be left lying around for ever.
Why do people write/say 40,000 pounds, 80,000 pounds, 190,000 pounds instead of 20 tons, 40 tons and 95 tons? Dont get it.
The mesh is put over the engine openings to keep birds and bats from nesting inside.They can really make a mess in there.
i think they got fouled up by large wildfowl being dragged inside whilst flying. I know there's been a few "bird strikes" in the past. Just read there's 50 PER DAY.

To me Mojave was just an intersection of two highways, a spot to gas up and/or maybe grab a snack. I've driven by Mojave many a times, but not in a long time. I never knew any other thing existed there. Thanks for the tour and education WH....take care.
The scaled composite guy, Dick Rutan, is a trip. He figured out how to make wings out of home depot foam and fiberglass. Also Trump force one is the same plane that used to be owned by Paul Allen.

After completion of the Voyager flight, piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, it was put on display in his hanger at Mojave airport and I took my family to see it.
It is amazing and fragile looking and the pilots had to lay down in it.
It is now proudly on display at the National Air Space Museum, National Mall location. When I was there, the main visitor information desk was underneath it and once you walked past it you were in the Main Hall with Spirit of St. Louis, Bell X-1, and Friendship 7.

Mojave is one of my favorite dessert small towns too.
And those airplanes have been there forever.
When I was there for first time,in 1989 those airplanes were there.
I was amazed seeing that then and never forgot it.

I used to live in Pleasanton and saw those stupid windmills all the time. Usually not working and an awful eyesore.
Thanks for this video and showing us around Mojave I used to live in 2015 at the Spaceport RV park and worked at Edwards AFB.

Mojave Inland Port is the future development for this area. Our San Pedro Port complex needs more land for container storage. With the nearby rail road and airport, Mojave is the prime location to become a new container hub helping to relieve the container congestion in the Ports of Long Beach & LA.
I live in Gainesville Ga and we have an inland port coming to our area. Containers from the Port of Savannah will make their way by rail up to northeast Ga.

That runway is 2 miles long at Mojave. Good representation of MoJave.
Mojave has a two mile runway, plenty long for any aircraft.

That old restored steam engine 5:12 is Southern Pacific # 4449. I believe named The Daylight Express. I've seen it running live in person, and my late dad raced it in his little Ford Courier!

We have wind farms all over here in the North East. They are quiet, the blades don't go that fast and there have been no reports of dead birds. A new Turbine plant to open in Colorado using all USA parts. Biggest one in the world too !
Dead birds don't talk...or squawk
Govt hide the fact that birds are being killed in the millions . A council in England employs people to remove the dead birds from around the towers so it doesn't upset the public . I'm from Australia and it has been reported that the low frequency sound produced by the towers off shore around Australia is interfering with the Humpback whale's ability to navigate .

My husband and I stopped at the Mojave Airport years ago. The head groundsman took us on the "$5.00 tour" in a golf cart ALL OVER that place. We got to see those planes right up close!!! There are movie props that we saw, too. Very cool!!!
I haven't seen much of the sun for going on two weeks here in Missouri (Misery). Nice to escape a bit in the virtual desert here on RUclips. While fishing once I was buzzed by one of those F4s flying at tree top level. That woke me up!

You know Sarah, if you ever tire of creating videos, you should consider voiceover work. Your WvB quote at 15:50 was spot on! I'm sure it helps that you spoke some German as a child but it was really good. Not to mention your regular video voice which is perfect too. I know between shooting videos, editing, researching content, modeling, and fighting copyright infringement cases, you don't have time for any other enterprises.(but this one you could do at home in your jammies) Just saying. Ok I'll shut up now. Sorry.
Richard - I have a background in radio and tv advertising and have encouraged Sarah Jane to get an agent to pursue perhaps reality TV and other options. She likes the idea of having an agent. She just needs the right person to connect her. Her talent and creativity are "off the charts"!
I think she would make a great weather girl or an on the spot reporter.
Moved out of CA a couple years ago, while we love living in America now, we do miss desert exploration.

Baggage handler here! Those grates in the engine intakes is to prevent birds from going in there and building nests. Absolutely love the Convair 990! I had no idea there was one there! Guess where I am using my flight benefits for next?

Yet another interesting Wonderhussy site added to my bucket list. Kind of a scaled down version of MASDC at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. Once a week, 1973-74, escorted visitors as an airman (E-1 to E-3) on tours around the hundreds of aircraft. Fun memories.
Mojave is sort of the civilian AMARC. While the DoD sends everything to Tucson, civilian entities never settled on one place. Mojave and Victorville, CA are the biggest, but Marana and Kingman AZ have large boneyards as does Roswell, NM.

I live about 14 miles south of that wind farm. I hate the wind so much!!! I can't stand the wind. It blows in this area non stop. The hillside lights up like a red blinking christmas tree with all the fans on the hillside. I have become a Don Q. Hote in a sense and understand why he was trying to stab them back in his day. The wind!! It's the wind I tell you. It drives you mad. Right now, this instant, as I sit here in my room the roof is rattling and squeaking so bad from this wind. I really would like to take my till and run it into the windmills myself. I wish they would just shut those damn things off so that the wind would stop blowing in this valley.
Cool episode. The venturi effect is when a liquid or a gas is going along at a certain speed and it hits a restriction. This is what causes the air to speed up through mountain passes. The fluid or gas or wind must speed up to keep the same amount of volume going through the restriction.
Called “ Bernoulli’s Principle”

At one time there was an independent gas station in Mojave named Casa de Gasa.
There used to be a bar in Jacksonville, Florida that pumped cold beer out of gasoline pumps, and you paid the price on the pump.
Great name for a chain of independents. Would get my business.
@@davidjackson7281 I remember back when going into a Texaco station, the attendant would be wearing a Texaco uniform, with police chief style hat.
Casa de Gasa was on the northwest corner of Sierra Highway and Oak Creek Rd. I think it was Mobil or Exxon before it became independent. Gas pumps and a convenience store. It was convenient for us that live west of town.
I think Virgin may have moved their operation to Truth or Consequences, NM. I was passing through there last month and tried to go to the visitor center, but they were in the process of re-locating so it was closed. But they have a pretty awesome used bookstore in town, which was a nice consolation price.
I always enjoy when Sarah attempts to explain technical concepts. 😆 In this instance, the Venturi effect explains that moving air will speed up when it gets to a constriction like a pass between mountains. It's the same as when a slow moving river gets to a narrow channel and the constriction causes the water to speed up. There are other aspects to the Venturi effect but they are of little importance in this example. The faster moving air in the valley floor between the mountains is more effective in turning windmill blades. 😲 It is a simple concept but I think using the more technical term: "Venturi," to describe to non-technical folks makes the effect seem more complicated than it has to be.

Mojave is a good dry area for storage so the planes don’t rust out. As you know they’ve been there for years. The 747 has enough runway out there to land and take off. Fun video @Wonderhussy Adventures! I love and MISS Mojave!!
I heard that Mojave is a nice place to live. Low rents and all that. Low crime too, probably because nobody has anything worth stealing. I remember flying out there from Chino to check out Rutan's Voyager days before it left on it's history making flight. I didn't get to meet Burt (an amazing aircraft designer), but Voyager was roped off and open for the public to view in a hanger. I remember thinking this might be the last time I or anyone had the chance to see her. Glad they made it back safely. What a fun video, Sarah. Thanks.
The passenger jet at 7 minutes is a Convair 990 Coronado which was designed for the same market as the Boeing 707/Douglas DC-8. The Convair designers decided to emphasis speed, so it went slightly faster than the 707/DC-8s, but also came with some handling problems so took longer to get certified for passenger use. The combination of running a bit late and higher seat-mile costs meant relatively few sold (I think SwissAir was the biggest customer) and the 707/DC-8s swept the market, especially in America. Convair rebranded as General Dynamics and dropped out of the commercial airline market. NASA brought at least one, it wasn’t a bad airplane, would have been reasonably with an acceptable amount of spares (from scrapping other airframes) and offered a fair volume of space for NASA equipment. The gray plane behind it is an F-4 Phantom. Thank you for a great tour, glad you’ve put the coco-puffs behind you. ❤👍😊
The red wiggle line that says NASA is called the "worm" My favorite NASA airplane is not there yet; the T-38 or Talon made by Northrup. It was the supersonic trainer for NASA shuttle pilots.

Beginning to sound like your healthy self, again. Thanks for the tour of the wind farm. I was upclose to one in Hawaii and I came away with a negative impression, beause they made loud noises and spun very fast. Nice to see they can be quiet. I have heard that migrating birds are being killed, but I don't have any data on it. Mojave really sounds like a great visit.
the tip of a long blade can go quite fast, if too long, they can go supersonic, so on a very dark night I am sure some birds or bats get struck more often. However, people get killed all the time in the oil industry and nobody says anything, it is just considered as a cost of modern living, regrettable but inevitable in hazardous industries. not to mention the environmental havoc and damage to wildlife the oil industry manages to rack up. makes the windmills look second string, like they aren't even trying.
for instance, the supertanker I sailed left behind a giant oil slick with every trip, because every time cargo is discharged, the tanks must be cleaned for the new cargo. every seagoing tanker ship in the world does this, in the open ocean beyond the pollution limits , so that new cargo is not contaminated. And it's not exactly fish food going over the side.
I was on one oil run between Italy and Tunisia where the ocean boundaries extended out so far out from both countries that we would cut speed , which minimized the length of the cleaning slick to about five miles, and even then we regularly violated the oceanic boundaries.

Engine screens look like it's to keep out snowbirds nesting, critters, and FOD❤

The Voyager, the round the world aircraft was basically a motorized glider.
On the 4 engine NASA jet, the screens over the engines were installed to keep the birds out while on static display.
The F-4 drones were used as a target practice for pilots.

There are a few mines in that area, as well as a old abandoned railroad trestle that has no tracks left and the supposed wild Morgan horses in that area as well. At night, from where I live, you can see the flashing lights from the wind turbines.
If you want something that will really freaked you out is when the nacelle catches on fire because the generator had a meltdown and the blades start to burn so that you have a 100 ft blade burning off and crashing to the ground. Keep up the great videos and God bless you and your family.
I worked out at the Mojave Air and SpacePort for all of 2008. I was able to explore the whole facility while I was involved in the installation of fiber optics and security system. At the time, there was a 1/4 scale model of the tanker ship used in the film Waterworld, out in the aircraft boneyard. There is a RUclips video of a Roton Rocket test flight. Aaand, the runway at the airstrip is plenty long enough to land a 747, I've seen it myself.

You did it again!!! Take me back to my old stomping grounds! Mojave was on my way to Tehachapi when I would go out riding my motorcycle when I was stationed at Edwards. It was a little different then when Hwy 58 went straight into town. Now I see Google Earth that 58 bypasses Mojave. Thank you, Jane!! You are amazing!

I was Asst. Crew Chief on the F-4 Phantom @ George AFB , Ca. Early 80’s.
Mojave used to be a USMC air station during World War 2.
Unfortunately, there is a significant downside to wind generators. They do kill many birds, especially at wind farms near migration routes. Maintenance is also an issue as the blades get heavily eroded by dust and debris in the wind and the blades need to be replaced frequently. There is no good way to recycle blades at this time, so they just collect in blade bone yards. There is also a limit to blade tip speed; if the blade tips approach the speed of sound they lose efficiency and would make one hell of a lot of noise! A great informative tour of a fascinating location!

Why can't they make boats or canoes out of old turbine blades?
@@davidmende4438They're carbon fiber epoxy. You can't reshape them and if you cut them the structural integrity is lost. They can be ground up and used in a sort of recycled plastic method, but the cost is really high. They instead sit in junkyards waiting for technology to make recycling them economical.

The ones installed in Illinois, have a 300 foot wide diameter. They rotate about 10 rpms on a windy day. Not an issue with birds.
Been there it is cool to see all the airliners parked there again! They won't land those airliners on dirt. They land on the runway at Mojave Airspace Port. and taxi to that area. That is a graveyard for those airliners when they are taken out of service. I live in Los Angeles and Las Vegas was my second home for about 30 years. I can probably just about drive between them blindfolded I have been so many times. I have a pilot's license and would fly there but it took more time to get to the airport and fly then get a ride to the house there than to just drive all the way. We also have miles of mining and solar land in the Needles area we have owned land out there for decades. I also road and raced dirt bikes and dune buggies out there in the desert when I was a lot younger. I am 68 now. We used to just go riding around to see what we could find out there for many years too. So much fun and you still get to do it and make a living off it. There was no internet or RUclips when we were out there. We never thought to film it. More power to you I have seen a lot of places we had been back then and not a lot of changes from back then when I see them in your videos. I should say thanks for bringing back a lot of old memories that were great to see again. Keep doing what you do it is really great! Thanks!
I got stuck in that town once. The highway back to Bakersfield was closed due to a sandstorm in that area.
Considering one of those wind turbines can power 1,500 average homes over a year, the potential to assist with the power grid is very large.Just think what 500 of those can do. Between that & solar, it makes a strong case for green power.
True except they cost more to operate than other sources of power, and only last about 20 years.
Thank you for sharing. Having griwn up in Tucson, as a kid we used to go look at the aircraft boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air base. As long as you were not causing issues the workers never said anything about your presence. We used to watch them remove parts etc. Now you get a summons to appear in federal court.

True, I have gone there way back in I think 1989 to see that.
Back then it was possible to go on the base for that, even as a foreigner, but I think security has been tightened quite a lot.

You didn’t mention the most important thing about Mojave, which is that it is near to Edwards Air Force Base, and was featured in the movie (and book) “all the right stuff”. Maybe you had mentioned it in a previous video on Mojave?
I think that Bone Yard was where they filmed part of “Harley Davidson & The Marborlo Man”
Those windmills are all over the panhandle and west Texas. We HATE them!! The cost to get rid of them is astronomical and they don’t have a long lifespan.
I drove by where they make some of them on my way to Colorado one time and they are LOOOoOong!!!

Absolutely Loved your Mojave video! I totally blow through Mojave on the way to Mammoth, hot springs and Tahoe. I’m going to have to check this place out! You are going to have to check out the Joshua Tree sculpture when going south on the 395 on the right hand side just before hitting the 14. It’s really beautiful!
There used to be a tour of the boneyard at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson Arizona. Unfortunately that ended for security reasons.
Great video Sarah! I remember going through Mojave as a kid with my Family in the 60's-70's on the way out to the Desert to go camping, hunting, and 4 wheeling in Jawbone Canyon.
Basically back then, other than the railroad, a few gas stations, and a greasy spoon diner, there was nothing there! Big difference now!

not a city--a little desert rag tag shett hole--when hiway 58 used to go thru it was busier--there is a ton of meth,speed use there,heroin,fetnayale now--half the people there are zombies
I've been thru Mojave on my way to Tehachapi, great history story telling, thank you. Neil Armstrong was a test pilot out at Edwards Air Force Base. Maybe you can add some of that history.
I'm with you Wonderhussy. I've always been fascinated with Wind Power. The first time I saw a mountain top covered with them in the desert, I was in love. Like You, I'm a geeky type too. So much so this Landscape Architect with Civil Engineering background bought a semi truck and criss crossed North America to see it all. And I sure did! That's why I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL SO MUCH

I have a friend that works on the wind mills.. He sent me a really cool video of him climbing up & out onto the top of them! Talk about an awesome view!! And your right, they are totally fascinating!!!
I suspected that the workers climbed, and the more maintenance intensive elevators are only to transport parts.

I am pretty sure, those who want a tour of a plane boneyard, can tour the plane boneyard outside of Tucson ... I have talked to a few people who have toured that one ... which is I am pretty sure, much larger and with a big assortment of types of aircraft, including helicopters. It has been used often in Hollywood blockbuster films.
watch out for the Mojave Green rattlesnakes...they are mean!
