Here it is July 2021 - 6 years after this posting which was done 40 years to the day after this concert so I am typing this 46 years after I WAS THERE! Yes I was living in Bartlesville where I was born and raised 40 miles north of Tulsa and I was at this concert with all my HS buddies who I no longer have contact with. We played the first Kansas album Hundreds of times and at that time had no idea who the people on the back cover of the first album were or what instruments they played, and this was not made clear on the back cover of their 2nd album. So we all took bets on which person played which instrument or who were the singers. We got to go down to the stage area after Kansas played and met Robbie Steinhardt who just passed away a few days ago. I remember wishing we hadn't stayed for Ted Nugent and BOC - I left the concert early cuz I had a huge headache from the sheer volume of the other 2 bands, and I was only 19 years old! I no longer live in Oklahoma, choosing to live my adult years in California. At one point we were smoking a joint together in the stands of the "Grandstand" and a cop all of sudden was standing next to us and asked us to put the joint out. He could have busted us but let us just put the joint out. Kansas was great and I saw them many more times out here in CA.

Phenomenal. Song for America is a masterpiece. I was probably 14 when introduced at the Tower Theatre just outside of downtown Philly. 63.5 now but always love their compositions and syncopated style. I've tried to explain to other band mates hand it over to your brethren and let them shine!!!

On side note I've been going to rock concerts in stadiums and arenas in California since the mid 70s and I can say that the all analog PA sound systems they used back then really sounded huge, larger than life, with literally tons of speaker cabinets all stacked up tall flanking the stage, nothing in the signal chain was digital not like nowadays with the digital line array speakers which may be easier to transport but man they do not compare, they just don't produce the WALL OF SOUND that was such a sonically magnificent experience.

So long ago. Such accomplished musicians! The first time I saw them was in 1972 or '73. It was a bar, I think in Manhattan, KS. They were perfection. I was astonished by their incredible tightness....sometimes you couldn't tell if it was Robby's violin, or Steve's keyboard making the notes. I also saw them in an auditorium in Topeka, I think. They announced at that concert that they were going to be on Don Kirshners Rock Concert. All through the years the perfection has remained. Thank you for posting this!

Must have been 1974, because Steve hadn’t played live with Kansas until then. There were two other versions of Kansas from ‘71 to ‘73. That group of musicians is now called “Proto-Kaw” led by Kerry of course. They’ve a few albums out, and are awesome live to this day.

Same here, but I’m a few years younger. When my schoolmates were all listening to Kiss, my first album (at the age of 12 in ‘77) was “Point Of Know Return”. It set my musical taste and attracted me to the bass guitar a few years before I started playing (didn’t even know what a bass was at the time, but my ear was definitely drawn to Dave Hope’s playing and tone). I still love Kansas, and never get tired of listening to them. A band I was in opened for them at a local festival in ‘98, and I got to chat with them for a few minutes. They were very nice guys. I wish Dave and Kerry were still with them then. I’d have loved to tell Dave how much his playing inspired me.

I saw Kansas on their Point of Know Return tour at Madison Square Garden & they were amazing! It was total perfection! Their song selection was spot on! I was a kid with little money so I had all their albums up to that point except their first album. So when they played Journey from Mariabron, I was unfamiliar with that song but immediately loved it! Of course I got their Two for the Show, the live album from that tour & wore that double vinyl LP out! LOL! Great memories that I will never forget.

@kevinkilduff2064 Kansas did a gig in 2019 at the Beacon Theater in NYC where they played both Point of Know Return and Leftoverture in their entirety back to back. They closed the show with Magnum Opus (last tune on Leftoverture) and Song for America (encore). Let me tell that was about as good as it gets especially since Song for America is one of my favorite tunes of all time! Fabulous! BEST synth solo I've heard on Mariabronn at 27:57. Steve is great on keyboards, but I always assume Kerry plays the more amazing solos like this one. Kerry was actually as good on keys as he was on guitar.
Oh, and just btw, Steve's vocals at the end from 28:52 - 30:14 never heard better--despite not a great recording. For imagining hearing this on high quality record.

    • @zemanocka
      @zemanocka  7 лет назад +5

Yeah, too bad it's not better quality... unfortunately, in 1975, high-bias cassette tapes were not here yet. As seen at the end of this video, I used a Scotch 120' so the set wouldn't be interrupted in case they went over 45 minutes (which they did, slightly). When I remastered this, I had to really boost the bass to coax out any low end.

In addition, the SFA was the one Kansas tour in which few live recordings were made. I have a copy of a couple of songs from this show that I downloaded a few years ago. One is The Devil Game. It would be great to have the entire show. Is there a download link available for the entire show???? Thanks again!

I like it when Robby says "Kerry had a good idea the other day. We can get some corn liquor and all get fucked up, and just fuck everywhere." The old Kerry was a helluva guy!!!!!!!

This recording tells me that the mix there was fantastic - even with those lousy folded horn cabinets!!! These guys were and will always be one of the finest bands ever to play instruments together. Thanx for sharing this recording!

This is awesome. The first time I ever head Kansas was actually in the summer of 1975 - one of the counselors at a summer camp I was attending had the album Song for America and he turned me on to the band and that great album. Cool to think this is maybe/probably the first time this audience is hearing Kansas. The Devil Game is amazing!!!

Just saw this video! Thanks, Tom! Journey From Mariabronn and Song For America have been two of my favorite Kansas songs! Only SfA gets any airplay on Pandora from those first 2 albums. Such a shame! Wonderfully strong musicianship from all of the original members. RIP Robby!

Even with the lo fi recording, you can hear how incredibly tight this band was in 75. Unreal. Love to hear how the 'Nuge was after that!

I did record all 4 bands, and I intend to eventually upload all 4 sets from this day. As a plus, the same photographer took some great pics of 'Uncle Ted's' set- and some of them are in color! Stay tuned...

Saw them in 1977 opening for Rush. They were touring Leftoverture and Rush was touring 2112. Saw them at Six Flags in Atlanta in 83/84. Then saw them a month or so later. They were co headlining a tour with Heart. Kansas was a great live band.

I am thrilled and honored to see this comment, thanks Debbie! I was really hoping Rich and the band would eventually find this video. Please say hello to Rich, and a huge THANK YOU for the years of fine music!
This concert was a major musical epiphany for this then-15yr old.
In 1975, from Alice Cooper, Bowie, & Kiss to Yes, Pink Floyd & Genesis, most of the progressive (or as was said then, "Art Rock") bands relied on a glittery or outrageous "shock rock" presentation- lots of lights, dry ice/fog, bizarre props and crazy costumes... then here comes this GREAT band that played incredible music, but they looked like us Okies; jeans, t-shirts, even overalls. I can tell you that a lot of us thought "Wow, if they can do it w/o all the glitter crap, maybe we can too."
I was already becoming a fairly accomplished guitarist, so I was anxious to see this band live- and they sounded so good, it styled our hair! I had never seen a band that good in my life, and to this day it still stands out as one of the best musical experiences in my life.
I saw that they were here in Tulsa last week, unfortunately I wasn't able to go. It would have been a pleasure, as appr. 40 years ago I saw them perform on the original 'Leftoverture' tour at the same venue (Brady Theater). They were amazing then, as well!
Thanks again Debbie for the comment, and to Rich. I hope he enjoyed this, and shares it with the other guys. ~Tom

Hi Debbie, Here is a odd question for you. How many packs of cigarettes did Dave Hope go through each show? It seemed he was lighting up a new one for each song...lol

Dave Hope is on FB he's pretty cool about answering band questions.
What I know is he did smoked a lot!
But Dave is a different man now.
