Hey y'all i'm pinning a comment about HSPs and a little more about the personality tests here. I used the term 'highly sensitive' in this video as the people in my life used 'highly' interchangeably with 'extremely.' In the context of the video I was discussing sensitivity in relationship to being emotional (having emotional reactions that were stronger than normal). I was not attempting to align myself with HSPs as I don't know much about it nor was this something on my radar prior to the video. I also don't believe anyone I was in conversation with was attempting to label me as an HSP given the context.
Many of you have pointed out the problems with HSPs and that this label/belief is controversial and can be harmful. I thought I was clear in the video but upon seeing your comments I can totally see how I was not. So sorry for creating confusion around this and for appearing to promote a system/label that has caused harm to others. Perhaps the 'appearance' isn't relevant if that's how it looked.
Also, many of you have pointed out that the MBTI and Enneagram tests are pseudo-science and have little if any scientific backing. Taking the test was meant to be a bit of fun as I also was not familiar with them. It was not meant to be a serious undertaking and was an experiment. The internet and pop culture is fascinated with these systems and I wanted to take a look for myself. If you're coming across this video for the first time, the comments are filled with people who have more experience and insights into these systems and more of their pitfalls. I think it can be a bit of a fun to give them a try but if you believe taking these tests may cause you potential distress or harm I encourage you to take a pass.

Congratulations on 30K! for me my spending habits were formed as a child by my mom. Being raised below the poverty line and never having the "COOL STUFF" was the norm. Now as a middle class adult, I'm pulled in two directions 1) over spend because I can, or 2) drastically under spending because that's what I was taught. I was doing hardcore under-consumption as a way of life. Now at 41 is still got nervous spending over $100.

Usually these personality tests are written with the goal of informing others on one’s behavior patterns, rather than with the goal of getting to the truth of one’s innate self, so they often aren’t concerned with whether one’s behavior is cause by some innate trait or by mental illness, neurodivergence, or circumstance. I think understanding that their intent is to tell other people how we will behave rather than to inform ourselves about our true nature is important in understanding in what way our results are applicable

I used to be super interested in hypnotism as a teenager and one of the profiles they (hypnotists, usually guys) would often pick out was a highly educated woman in artistic or humanistic fields, because they were often good at using visualization / imagination and/or empathy. Marketing is a lite form of hypnotism and propaganda in my opinion, and I think the psych profile marketers/influencers go after intentionally the isolated, lonely, insecure person. (I know it sounds harsh when I put it this way.) But there is a huge incentive in capitalism to make everyone feel they will never be "good enough" to "make it" but buying things will solve their lacking.

    • @nharber9837
      @nharber9837 24 дня назад +6

You’re certainly correct. The first thing they covered in my journalism class was marketing. The base of every sales tactic is identify a need your product provides a solution for, and if there isn’t one, create one. The example used was having all the girls in the class who had ever bought a razor to shave her legs, or had ever shaved raise our hands. He asked how we felt when someone could see our legs with hair. It was unanimously bad. Then he showed us the advertisements from decades before we were born that literally just said that women with hairy legs “just don’t belong.” It was an ad created to sell razors to women, when women typically didn’t shave their legs at the time. After the ad, it became normal to shave every time we shower. The ad created a need and provided the answer - buy their product. He went on to explain that a blatant ad like that might not work today as people are used to that and have had time to think about it and criticize it and decide if they agree, so now ads have to be more subtle and clever, but the basic idea at the base of it is still intact over 100 years later. Make someone feel insecure or somehow bad, usually about themselves or something they’re afraid of and sell them the solution.
So when someone is pointing out something and making you feel you need it, look at their other hand. Is it going through your pockets for money? Well now you know this whole exercise was just to get money out of you, and there’s a good chance whatever they said isn’t even true.

Marketing isn't a form of hypnotism, because hypnotism isn't real. Propaganda also is a specific term referring to government messaging, it doesn't apply to private companies advertising. What you're talking about is just....advertising.

I’ve finally admitted to my husband that I have a full fledged shopping addiction. It’s been incredibly hard because it’s almost a scoffed at addiction and one I haven’t been able to admit to any of my friends because it has such a stigma of being frivolous, immature and financially irresponsible. I know all off these things are true. I have been suffering from depression, mood instability and ADHD plus trauma for most of my life and I fell into the dopamine trap of shopping. I told my husband that some days the only thing I look forward to is the package(s) that are arriving that day but that high is so short lived. My mood is now plunging since I’m not getting that same dopamine boost.

You should look into the Big Five for personality- this is the only empirically supported description of personality we have that appears to generalize across cultures. It measures personality on five different aspects: openness to new experiences, conscientiousness, extroversion/introversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. All other personality tests are not supported by research. When you look into the big five, it does a better job of parsing out what is personality and what is neurodivergence or other mental illnesses. There’s also something to be said of how our mental health can also affect our personality. Considering your conversation on addiction, there’s research showing that people have certain characteristics that are more likely to predispose them to developing addiction (this can range from biology to the environment they grew up in. Hence why we tell people that have addiction in their family to be more mindful of their behaviors). To reframe the point you made about how people may think “well, this is how I am, I can’t change it,” changing the thought to “I am aware that this is how I am, what are ways I can cope to keep myself aligned with my values” can be both accepting of the situation, while also moving forward in a positive way. I loved your discourse on this topic!!! (For context I’m a psychology grad student)

Agree, and would also add re personality being “born with” vs environment, Im not sure there’s much benefit to be had separating them or treating personality as an innate thing. personality is a hard thing to define but in psychology is often referring to a tendency to behave in certain ways that is stable over time and in similar contexts. Which could be a product of nature or nurture or the interplay between them. And also in specific contexts different aspects might come out.
Also, to add to that reframing - some people might find it helpful to consider the strengths and advantages of that “type” as well as understanding the ways these tendencies can be unhelpful, especially if more extreme.

I’ve been dealing in therapy the fact that I’m a people pleaser, and my family has always said I can be dramatic and sensitive. I’m a late 30’s - it diagnosed until the last few years as AuADHD, as well as the fact I feel sound to the point it will make me throw up, and I found out I have webbed toes that are uniform on both feet, so overlooked, that have always caused foot pain. My mom never believed me on things. We were out recently and there was a sound at the grocery store that really affected me, when we left, I had to pull over to throw up out the door, she told me she never really believed me that I could feel sound until she saw that and that I was just a dramatic child. No. Apparently I tried expressing things for so long as a kid and brushed off that I escalated things…. Until I stopped and became a people pleaser. and yes. I have a very addictive personality - finding out about having ADHD has helped me start to reduce my shopping tendencies. It was the piece I was missing all along.

I’ve never liked personality tests because I tend to overthink the smallest question and if you asked me to take it twice I would give a different answer depending on if I was hungry or had to go to the bathroom. What I have realized though, is I have the exact same disordered thoughts when I am trying to balance saving money and actually spending it as I did when I was deep in disordered eating. The binge restrict cycle is exactly the same. So instead of a personality test I could basically quiz myself on which eating disorder symptoms and I exhibiting right now when I want to buy something lmao

I think that many of us underestimate how easily addiction can become a part of your life. I know that there is supposedly “an addictive personality” but I also think that people can become addicted to many things. A dopamine hit is very intoxicating. I also think that we (gen x and younger) underestimate how easily influenced people have ALWAYS been. We just have more access to dopamine hits/influencing or advertising. Always love hearing your perspective. As a fellow recovering overspender (especially on makeup), I can map the behaviors that led me to choosing to spend money and consume content to fuel more spending. On a different note, I was in a car accident a few years ago and was on very heavy duty pain meds. Prior to this accident I couldn’t handle more than a Tylenol. After, I came to understand how people can get addicted to those substances. Reflecting back on both of these experiences, I see how easy it is to seek out that feeling.
Also idk how I feel about MBTI or enneagrams. Folks in my life that are very interested in those are in a high control religious group and it gives me a weird feeling.

  • @Iquey

Side note about the HSP profile: it's something that many high masking and lower support needs Autistic people have kind of butted heads against because the author who coined the HSP personality profile kind of wrote her books when autism was rarely diagnosed in girls and women, but maybe at least 2/3 of the HSP traits can be sorted into synptoms of ADHD (attention / focus regulation and rejection sensitivity dysphoria) and autism (sensory issues) so maybe the HSP was a way for autistic women and ADHD/auDHD folks to find each other if they were not the stereotypical autistic stoic boy who loves math and organizing, but throws a huge meltdown if they are told to wear socks. People who missed their diagnosis because doctors and sexism passed them over. Or if they appeared more gifted than disabled, they never thought they could be helped by accomodations due to autism being so stigmatized in the 90s and 2000s.

You're an INTJ. You're emotional because you have your Fi in a sensitive position (the 3rd AKA "child" position).
So many INTJs either think they're INFPs or INFJs because they think the "T" in INTJ means you're cold and unemotional. Not true.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  23 дня назад +3

I wasn't aligning myself with HSPs or making that claim, I was saying that I am particularly sensitive and emotional and elaborated on what I meant by that. I DO appreciate this addition about HSPs though. When I was called 'highly sensitive' I took it to mean 'extra' sensitive because it was usually in relationship to being emotional and having strong emotional reactions to things. I didn't see it as someone trying to say that I was an HSP because that was never part of the conversation. I think using the world 'highly' probably created that alignment in my video though, and I perhaps used that phrase because it's just one I've heard a lot. My apologies for creating some confusion here.

I'm glad I'm not the only one somewhere between INFP and INFJ. I took the Meyers-Briggs test nearly thirty years ago when I started college, and again a couple years ago. Both times I was 49% J and 51% P. These things are incredibly subjective and one could argue suggestive. It can be handy in understanding each other, but one shouldn't feel the need to fit into these neat little containers.

So, as a psych student, I have to say I'm very critical of personality tests, especially the MBTI... Those tests often have been developped with white middle class able people in mind, so when you deviate from that norm the results stop being as accurate as they could be
Also, as a bilingual person, I'm critical of the way the tests are translated. I've done the MBTI a lot fo times in English, always got INFP, then I did it in French and got a completely different result (I think it was one of the orange/red ones, don't remember which) that didn't feel like it fit me at all

i mean, this kinda brings up the meta of what is mental illness, really. if it makes your life difficult (or sometimes, if it makes the lives of people around you difficult) and it isn't the norm, it's mental illness. but some people don't like to think of it that way, which is why some people prefer to think of it as neurodivergence. the difference is whether you want to accept your differences or if you want to change them. me struggling with emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, being prone to addiction...those things make me unhappy and make my life hard. so i am happy to take medication for those things rather than just accept them as personality traits. it's a matter of perspective, and i think some people feel afraid of losing themselves if they treat their symptoms and then feel or act differently. i've known people who only took their adhd meds during the school year, for example. but as an adult, you can't really do that.

i’m also a highly sensitive person and supposedly a 4 and infj! as soon as you started describing some of your personality traits like being very emotional and liking to research, i was like, i bet she’s an infj! i’ve personally found the infj label (and also HSP), more so than enneagram, to be really helpful in learning about aspects of myself that i’d previously been confused about. i also have social anxiety disorder and have personally found these labels to help me better understand how my disorder presents and why i have it. these things are also sooo interrelated and nuanced for me!
i also don’t think i’m very easily influenced and have always been pretty skeptical when it comes to anything or anyone advertising to me lol. maybe i was a bit more susceptible when i was a teen, as most are! but i do relate to that need of finding a community because i’ve been involved in fandoms since i was a teen.

I've never done the enneagram tests but I've always found that that the Myers-Briggs seems to take a lot of nurture things into account. And I feel like that can lead us to change the outcome of the test as we age.
I've always been big into astrology and I definitely find that a full natal chart - not just somebody's sun sign or big 3 - kind of explains a baseline of someone way better than any of these personality tests ever do. This has somewhat to do with my own spiritual journey so to each their own.

I am also a 4, and I guess I’m easily influenced bc I took the test right after watching 😂
But I was also perpetually labeled as an extremely sensitive person but also melancholy…people used to compare me to Eeyore when I was a child.
I started only expressing myself when alone through drawing, writing and music, and with a select couple friends. I didn’t learn proper verbal expression or conflict revolution which really hindered my social skills in groups. I was “the grumpy one” but it never seemed like anyone cared to know why or how things affected me. And when they asked, I’d lash out and assume they just wanted me to stop being upset bc they were uncomfortable , and they’d find better friends anyway (self fulfilling prophecies)
I’m married now and in therapy, it’s improved but idk. I definitely feel like there’s a long way to go and I cannot seem to get people to understand or value my thoughts and feelings.
I get deeply involved in hobbies but end up switching them up. Shopping for makeup was a big one for a while. The search for community and understanding while maintaining control and distance is a constant struggle lol
Oh, and I was diagnosed with adhd a couple years ago as a woman in her 30s.

We act differently based on our context, so nobody’s personality is set in stone. You can have vastly different behaviour if you’re under stress, or if you’re on holiday, with friends or with family, in an intimate or in a public setting, in your comfort zone or out of it, etc etc.

im 7 minutes into the video and im both excited and feeling defensive because im autistic and the enneagram is my biggest special interest LOL. it’s helped me understand myself a lot in conjunction with mental health care and therapy and attending a 12 step program. but i love a good critique and there are many to be had.
watching your videos has opened my mind about my own consumption and i’ve actually been thinking about how my own personality type influenced me to consume to forge an identity, and to become obsessed with the idea that the things i own should be a reflection of who i authentically am (therefore, i need to curate purchases that show Who I Am). im in the middle of trying to sort through, repurpose, and find homes for all the crap that i’ve accumulated because i thought it would make me feel more like myself and it obviously didnt because no material possession could ever do that.
looking forward to hearing what you have to say!
more from finishing the video -
i personally feel that autism is 100% a part of my personality, it’s inextricable from it, and i get why it can be harmful to chock things up to simple personality types when actually you have a neurodevelopmental condition BUT. having been diagnosed with a multitude of mental illnesses and personality disorders since i was a kid and made to feel like there was something Wrong with me because of my behaviors, it has been super helpful to realize that it’s just 1) autism 2) trauma and 3) most importantly, just my personality. i also know a lot of other neurodivergent people feel the same way, we don’t “have” autism for example, we are autistic & it’s a part of us.
from my perspective the point of the enneagram is not to brush off the negative parts of our personalities or our struggles. it’s to help us see them more clearly so we can work on them. the enneagram is useless if we dont do the work to help ourselves after recognizing the personality pattern. lots of people do use it in more stereotypical/pigeonholing ways which i think makes it unhelpful at best and very harmful at worst. the enneagram is obviously not scientific whatsoever so maybe that’s why its easy to engage with it like hogwarts houses rather than as something to help you grow. i say none of this to judge people who have a passing interest in the enneagram - just acknowledging some of the many ways it can be both hurtful and helpful.
i really relate to what you had to say about using hobbies to connect with people and it possibly leading to overspending. as well as convincing yourself that you’re being a thoughtful consumer just because you think very deeply about things or even overthink. i will spend a lot of time deliberating over an unwise purchase and the time i spent in it makes me feel like it’s a wise purchase somehow. maybe sunk cost a bit haha.

9:20 I've never understood that. It seems like nearly everybody wants "a feel of belonging" or "be part of a community". I've never had that desire.
Some people told me that it's great not to have that, but I'm not sure, because a lot of people I come across interpret me as disinterested, jealous or even egoistic.
Like when someone has a new car and wants to show it, I don't care much about it; in those type of situations people think I don't give a crap about them or think I act disinterested out of jealousy.
But in reality, if it's not any of my hobbies, I just don't care, but that doesn't mean I don't care about those people.
To me it seems they project the way I act towards their stuff onto themselves, turn it into some kind of personal offense.
In the "car example" it's just a car to me, just a means of transportation.
I've a hard time to act all hyped up about someone else's new car, clothes, smartphone, watch or whatnot.
They have their hobbies/interests and I have mine.

I have this issue too and the only thing I can say is that I'm AuDHD and the "expected response" socially is along the lines of being happy that someone else is happy. You don't have to feel it, but it's about acknowledging that someone you care about (ostensibly) is enjoying something that they care about and supporting that. Obviously if you have no feelings towards this person it doesn't matter at all what they're thinking or feeling as long as they're leaving you alone.

@@AerynKDesigns Ah interesting, it didn't occur to me that it could be related to autism, but that makes sense, since it's an empathy related thing.
In my case the reason is that I've seen/learned the absolute cruelty people are capable of at a young age, that made me lose interest in most other people.
Same for "belonging to a group" - the disinterest about that comes from the same place.

TBH the aspect of the Harry Potter sorting where it considers what you value has always been interesting to me so you end up with cowards like Pettigrew in Gryffindor. Personality exams are always like "choose which one is you" but this is more accurately answered by people who OBSERVE you because it seems to me that you are likely to choose which do you WANT is you.

Also re: addictive personality, I heard it constantly growing up and have myself used it frequently to describe my younger brother, who did wind up as an addict. My family definitely used it in the past to describe someone who is a follower who was significantly more impressionable than those around them and who have a much worse time in recovery, and I find myself even present day using it to also describe myself - and a lot of those traits I would use to describe myself or my brother definitely just fall into "signs of prolonged trauma and untreated ADHD".
I don't know if I've ever seen someone use it as if someone couldn't help themselves from falling into addictions, but I definitely saw it a lot for those of us with poorer impulse control and tendencies towards bingeing things.

Hi Shawna! I'm someone who started to follow your channel, because of Alexa's recommendation. Its interesting to listen to a "Feeler''s" perspective on this topic, opposed to Alexa's "Thinker" perspective. I took the MBTI test first time when I just turned 30, and I have retook it periodically since then. I have been categorized as a INFP at that time, and I felt very align with what I read. I did become a bit of my identity. Redoing the test is always interesting for me because I tend to monitor how my percentages for each dichotomies are going up and down, and reflect on my life circumstances, what might be triggering these changes. Since my first time taking the test, my life changed a lot, I work in jobs I enjoy much less, I used to sell and teach about tea in London, which is the thing I enjoy the most, and now I live in Asia and have to teach English, as I don't speak the local language well. The changes in my life slowly made my personality change, and I started to get the INFJ as a result more and more. First it was like an identity crisis, because I was already identifying with the INFP description so much, but later I accepted and started to think more about how can my new strengths contribute more to my new life. Now I don't really identify as any of these personality types, but I like to monitor myself through them. The funniest thing is that after I gave birth to my child, my result really went extremely different, I became an ISFJ for a short time. That's when I really understood, that this is just showing a temporary state of mind, not a personality. My N turned into S because I was in a contant survival mode, and the J solidified, because with the baby relying on me , I just had to learn hwo to manage time better. So, don't worry too much about these result, they are just food for thought.

I am with you that these tests are best taken with a bit of fun in mind. You bring up interesting questions/thoughts about how circumstance can affect our results or even how life changes can affect how we see the world, which is normal. I think I've heard proponents of the test say that your results are permanent? Like you'd always be an INFP, but what if your first test was heavily informed by circumstance? And, people do/can change through their lives. It seems weird to think that they'd be permanent. I appreciate you sharing your experience!

I think these personality tests are like horoscopes. You intuitiveley take what fits and ignore the rest. I had to take several of these in a class and I by base do these things multiple times, because some of the options are like idk all of them or none of them. When I take these things I get a different result every time.
I just think people cannot neatly be put in boxes.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  23 дня назад

yeah, I agree that it's hard to put people into boxes. I do think that if I took the test again there's a good chance I'd get a different MBTI given how close one of my categories was. I also wonder if I was in a different mood would I respond differently to the questions about stress

I’m having trouble understanding this because I view addictive personality, HSP, introvert, ect, all which i am/have), my sign, my adhd and autism, and my types in these personality tests- as all just parts of how I am. Or all different explanations of how I am. Just different words to describe me. Like I think my disorders definitely change and shape a big part of my personality. I don’t separate these bc so many of them overlap. It’s not either or it’s and.

If you need to, go back through some of the recent videos for Shawna's no buy video - you don't have to stop buying everything, but remind yourself that if you already have handbags that work and have no functional failures, then you've already got a perfectly usable bag!
You've got this, don't feel like a failure if you cave in for one, but remember that you can go over what you already own and remind yourself that what you're chasing is novelty, and that you've already got what you you're looking for.

MBTI may be dismissed by a lot of people, but as an INFJ-A woman with strong assertiveness, it absolutely helped me understand why I didn't feel connected to other people and has done a lot to "cure" my anxiety, insecurity, etc. I leaned into it big time and I have really made a lot of progress in my life.
