My Ryobi trimmer stopped working. Since I'm a guy who believes you can't break it any more than it already is, I took it apart. The power wire came apart at the connection just as yours did in this video. Cleaned the wires off, crimped them together and it works! I should have watched this video to guide me through the process. Well done Joe.
Thank you for making this video. Our first Ryobi trimmer stopped working so my husband bought a new one. The new one also stopped working so he said, "Just go buy another one!" Thankfully we didn't throw away either trimmer. After watching your video, I was able to take both apart and found, not a wire problem, but string and debris inside preventing rotation of the trimmer. So, I'm really happy I kept two trimmers out of the landfill! Thanks!!
I've had mine for a couple years and it just stopped working the other day. Looked up troubleshooting and found your video. I unscrewed the shaft halves and mine was EXACTLY like your picture - the white wire had come loose. Easy fix once you know how, thanks to you. :) One minor note: I was able to use pliers on the wire nut still connected to the red wire and squeeze it 90 degrees off from the original crimp. I could then pull the wire nut off and didn't have to cut the red wire any shorter. Thanks again!
I tore mine apart instead of throwing it away thanks to your video. No wires unplugged but weeds were wound around whip. Cleared those and it works like a charm🎉!! Thank you so much!!
Well bugger!! I just stumbled into this great video. Unfortunately, I started at the top end and disassembled the handle and tested the leads to and out of the switch.I Continued on to what you did here and found the red wire had pulled out of its connection hole. I pushed the wire back in as far as it would go and applied some gorilla glue to it and let it sit overnight. Next morning, it was all good until I got to the fun part. That is all the bits and pieces in the handle, including the little springs, switch, etc. I so wish I had seen this video first!! I have subscribed here and will check with you before I stub my toe again!! By the way, I had been dreaming up a way to replace the plastic lines with a couple of lengths of stainless steel wire when I discovered the plastic cutters. I installed the one, and what an improvement! Once you get used to not getting the blades into hard surfaces, it works great and the blades last longer. LOL! Now to get that damned top end put back together!!
Thx mine is only two years old started intermittent operation. Hopefully ur vid will help me get back in shape. Best trimmer edger I’ve ever owned. Gave up on the gas ones. Found out ethanol at the pumps can get into fuel and screw things up. Will come back and repost my results. UPDATE 10/2023 I went ahead and pulled the electric Ryobi head apart and found the issue. Turns out a long vine from our Wisteria bush wound itself around the main armature on the head. After pulling it out and reassembly the unit functioned & performed flawlessly.
awesome saved me from buying a new one! exact same problem but mine was intermittent. Once I opened it up I saw where the wire was only partially attached and that's why it was intermittent.
My exact Ryobi model just stopped. Per video, took it apart and the white wire broke exactly as shown. Reconnected using a wire next, reassembled and it started right up. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this! I was able to repair our very old Ryobi One weed wacker by following this. With the help of your video, it really was an easy fix.
Mine was due to seized motor. I removed debris and strings around the rotor, but it's still not easy to spin it, so I oiled the rotor, spinned it a few times, it works like new.
Thank you, thank you. You made it soo easy, because I didn't have to unscrew all the holes in the handle. I did something a little different in that I reused the crimp cap by squeezing the opposite side of the crimp and it allowed the remaining wire to release. The only thing I needed to do was make sure I had enough wire to wrap both wires around each other and then I recapped the wires with the crimp cap. I also wrapped electrical tape around the wires and cap. I also told my husband to stop turning the darn head. I think that's what caused the wire to loosen. Anyway, thank again.
Sir. Thank you for this video. I just bought this ryobi weed wacker at a thift store for $13. Came home and tested it with my batteries. It didn’t work. Was about to return it then checked youtube and yours was the first I saw. I was able to fix it and its working fine now. Thanks!
Haven't fixed mine yet, but just opened it up and white wire is broken off just like your video! Thanks! I think we'll be up and running soon. Happy to save some $$ and keep some plastic out of the landfill.
Mr. Joe Stoe, YOU ARE THE MAN!!! My model was a bit different but the problem was very similar!!!! T-20 torx screws on my trimmer. Thank you. Thank you, Thank you.
Exactly my issue. Unfortunately, I was sure it was my new battery and ordered a new one before I saw this video. When the new batter didn't work, I looked up this video. The white wire broke off of mine as well. I too had problem with the wire from the motor being very short. I didn't have all of the nice parts/pieces/tools you had so used duck tape to hold the wires together once I had stripped them. Trimmer is up and working. Not sure how long this will hold but at least I know what I need to do to fix it properly next time. Thanks!
Hi!y grass trimmer starts then stops after a few seconds. Is this something you have experiences? What do you think could be the issue please? Thank you
Thanks! I can't believe after using this trimmer for 5 years that a wire would come off the connector - so I had my doubts. However, I cut the plastic connector off of the red wire then used a wire nut to connect the 2 wires back together - even with that metal clip still on the red wire. Easier for me and I didn't have to buy anything else to keep the wires together. I could have taped the wire nut on with electrical tape, but I didn't. If it somehow falls off again, I'll know how to fix it. But, my trimmer has these torx screws which I was able to find an allen wrench that worked.
I’m not sure my issue is exactly the same….mine will start to spin as I pull the trigger then it just stops, so it only turns less than a quarter turn. Have tried several batteries so I know that’s not the problem. Any thought?
Could be a few different causes. Intermittent connections at the switch or motor. Or the head is getting stuck on something. Check there isn’t any grass or weeds wrapped around the shaft
Great video!! Thanks! I did the same fix on my channel for the RYOBI lawn mower! The safety switch goes bad and the mower stops working. I showed how to replace/bypass the switch. Thanks again my EDGER is working again.. now I'm out of string! UGH....
Exactly my problem. The white wire broke off and I reconnected it but I only had some tape on hand so hopefully it stays. Thanks man you helped a lot. Earned a like and a sub
Great video, though it's back to the drawing board for me. Mine works intermittently, but my wires seem intact and not loose at all. The main rotating part has a bit of play, so I'm thinking something is worn out within. Thoughts or links?
Did you find the answer to this the rotating head being loose and rattly? I have the same problem. Can't find a video anywhere on this problem I can't find a video anywhere
great video!! thanks man! mine is different model but looks similar,i knew it's shorting somewhere as the whole stick from top to bottom was getting so hot! turned out that wires at the motor where cooking!! i had more than enough to just cut the melted part away and it is going as new!!!!
The red wire on my weedeater is detached from the motor. What is the best way to reconnect it? I stripped it and put it back in the hole and it worked, but I don’t know how to get it to stay other than using solder
I love my Ryobi tools and was glad to find your video. Mine was not a wire though it was grass twisted on the shaft. Canned air, needle nose plyers and lube and we are good as new.
My trimmer stalls. So it starts up really slow and then stops. Will the demo in this video fix that. We have checked the batteries they work on our mower but not the trimmer
@joestoe1610 you are right! I found a repairman and found out it was the motor. Oddly the string was coiled inside of it. We were g8ven the wrong string. Now we have the right one and a new motor 👍🏻
Open up the handle and check the switch, it might be moving around a little which might be causing it to stick. A small piece of foam could hold it in place a little tighter.
I was looking to see what size Allen wrench those screws take. At Home Depot they said metric (as it's Japanese) so I bought a whole set, but none of them fit. Back to the store....
Very well done. My older version, 3-4 years old, 18v trimmer broke where the spinning wheel and motor shaft meet, no spin. I cheep part broke and I can get it apart but the 800 number said you must buy the lower assembly, that they don't sell the part that broke. Can I get the part some way. ie, I finally bought a new Ryobi 18v and they changed this design. Wonder why? What can I do other than keep the parts that aren't broken, as parts for repair? PittsburghThom
Keep an eye out on the side of the road.I find lot's of mowers and trimmers that people are throwing away that usually only need a minor repair. Also Craigslist, I found several trimmers and mowers for free or very little $
anyone know what screw driver to use to get the main cover off? the protector cover was just a phillips but the main cover screws are in a deep pocket and i can't tell what they are, they don't look like phillips. it kinda looks like a hex key.
Do you think you could take the spool head off and fix a solid blade? In Australia you can't buy the electric brush cutter version. I know this could break the unit and add safety issues but just wondering if it was possible.
I don’t know. You probably can on the higher up models of the Ryobi trimmer. This is the base model and I think they designed it to be thrown away when it stops working.
issue: weed eater would spin a few seconds and stop. every trigger pull it would spin without fail but for only a few seconds solution: I took apart the head and got any grass out that i could, still wouldn’t spin. i sprayed with WD40 in obvious spinning spots, still wouldn’t spin. i reopened it and showered it with WD40 in every spot and hole i could find. now it works like magic
Thanks Joe. Create video. I have the p2008 and the head keeps on flying on the trimmer. The head is threaded on but flys off right away. Am I missing a piece ?
I was just going to go buy a new one, but after watching your video I decided to give it a try and see if the lose wire is the problem. So on my way. I'll let you know f that was it.
Before you take it apart... Make sure the locking nut that connects the top trigger and bottom half is tight. Once I tightened up the large locking nut, my intermittent problem disappeared and it ran like new again. I also had to clean the grease off the battery terminals, the charging terminals, and the terminals in the trimmer. In my case it's a trimmer/edger.
I took mine apart last week and thought it was grass twisted around the motor shaft that caused the issue. I taped the wires together but didn't really inspect the connections. Now it's not working again. I'll check the connections and use the butt splicers this time! Great video! Timely too!
That's great you didn't give up on it! yea it could be there is a bad connection under the tape. leave a little slack so it doesn't pull apart when you twist the handle around.
when i took mine apart string had wrapped around the shaft and stalled the motor. i knew the wiring ok before starting because would try to turn at first. so removed binding around motor shaft and now ok. not sure how line got there.
I have a ryobi easy edge string trimmer. I want to replace the motor but cant get the head unit off. It spins when I try to twist off. Any suggestions?
I think that model is similar in that you simply take the cover off the bottom of the head and remove and replace the spool and then put the cover back on?
My problem is the the circular part at the bottom isn’t spinning freely. Feels like something is binding it up. It will run 10 seconds & then quit. It just doesn’t feel right when I spin it by hand.
Is it rubbing anywhere or is it stiff to turn in the motor? If it’s not rubbing or have anything jammed around the shaft like string or grass then the motor might be bad.
Nice video. I don't have the same trimmer, but my P2005 has a similar motor + plastic reel holder as yours. I wanted to replace the head but I'm having trouble figuring out how to move the plastic head from the motor --- I don't suppose you have any ideas?
If you want to remove the entire head assembly chances are you have to remove the screws farther up the handle. On mine the handle screws hold everything together. After that there’s got to be a few screws holding the motor to the head. Look closely they are probably there
Check that no grass or debris is wrapped around the shaft. Check for loose wires at the motor and the switches. Also maybe spray some contact cleaner on the switch contacts.
Hi Joe, what would you recomme nd to lube the shaft ends in the electric motor it's getting all dried out and having is1l 1sues spinning freely would silicone spray be the answer you think just as it would be like when doing the routine maintenance and upkeep etc on an electric fan motor? That's how I normally service those anyways, that or like a drop of motor oil from an oil squirt can on each end that spins inside the housing seems to do the trick for me sometimes with fans too. Either of those sound like the answer on this thing too, maybe? I got to tell ya.. tried going to their website did a live chat with the help who basically took 10 minutes to tell me they didn't know and there is no second or third-tier tech to advise me either also I did try calling the toll-free number they got and talked to a live human being just to say take it up place about 150 miles away from me is the closest warranty place, xcetera. Talk about unskilled not knowledgeable and no help whatsoever. And they get paid to do that every day SMH good help really is hard to find honestly I really expected better I was disappointed. Point being, hopefully you can succeed where they epic fail and advise me the right direction, is my point. Thx, Ted P San Diego Cheers
My Ryobi trimmer likes to stop working when I get around a heavily needed trimming area. I take the battery out and place it back in over the course of 5 seconds and it starts to work again until it's under pressure again. Anyone ever experience this problem? I'm thinking maybe battery connections???
My red wire frayed and separated from the motor. Looks like I’m toast as there are clips that look permanent at motor head and I ain’t getting in. Prolly owned it 8 yrs but not that many spoils of wire or hours. Whatever….HD says $59

I went ahead and pulled the electric Ryobi head apart and found the issue. Turns out a long vine from our Wisteria bush wound itself around the main armature on the head. After pulling it out and reassembly the unit functioned & performed flawlessly.
I love the electric trimmers. Got rid of my gas trimmers a while ago.

Appreciate the Ryobi video. Most Ryobi video cover the bigger model and not this model.

T-20 torx screws on my trimmer.

EXACTLY what the problem was! Thanks for saving us 300 bucks!
Great!
Mine wasn't the wire but it was excess grass out and oil on it and then it took off. Thanks do much. I just love my Ryobi tools.
Thanks! Fixed the problem (much less elegantly than you!) and it's working fine. Hope my wire nut holds up- there wasn't enough room to tape it
Thank you so much! This was my issue too and it fixed the issue with it dying so quick too (from having a bad connection for a while)
Great!

Duct tape is awesome! Glad you got it working! You can fix it for good after the season is over.
Hi!y grass trimmer starts then stops after a few seconds. Is this something you have experiences? What do you think could be the issue please? Thank you
Check that the shaft doesn’t have anything wrapped around it. Also check the switch in the handle, the connections could be intermittent.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!!! 🎉🎉 Such an easy fix 🙏
Can you make a video on replacing the motor? This was so helpful. Thanks!
What I didn't see in the video is what tool you used to unscrew the screws.
Thanks. Exactly what was wrong with my trimmer. Fixed and ready to go.

Right on! Ground wire in my case. So thank you and keep it up.

Would have ben helpful to show the disassembly and reassembly.
Yea, that might have been my first video and wanted to get it fixed so I could finish the yard work.
The red wire on my weedeater is detached from the motor. What is the best way to reconnect it? I stripped it and put it back in the hole and it worked, but I don’t know how to get it to stay other than using solder
It pulled completely out of the motor? Yea you could try to melt some solder into the hole around the wire. I haven’t had that problem yet.
Exactly the problem I had. A quick fix. Great video. Thanks
Thank you! I used a wire nut and all is well. 🎉
I love my Ryobi tools and was glad to find your video. Mine was not a wire though it was grass twisted on the shaft. Canned air, needle nose plyers and lube and we are good as new.

Mine makes a high pitched whine when activated but no movement from the motor. Is it seized up and needs lube?
No lube for the motor but it could be slipping in the head or the head is stuck.
My problem is with the switch at the handle you pull on and off with your fingers.ot seems to be jammed .can you help.
Open up the handle and check the switch, it might be moving around a little which might be causing it to stick. A small piece of foam could hold it in place a little tighter.
Adding my thanks to that of many others. Less in the landfill, and I just saved some $ to put towards my roof repair ;-)
I was looking to see what size Allen wrench those screws take. At Home Depot they said metric (as it's Japanese) so I bought a whole set, but none of them fit. Back to the store....
Great video, unfortunately my problem is that the motor is running rough, I think a bearing is out or something.
I'm having g trouble getting TO THE screws in a deep pocket. I have the right head for em but can't reach em? Any tips??
Hmmm I don’t remember how far in they are. Use a longer screwdriver?
Very well done. My older version, 3-4 years old, 18v trimmer broke where the spinning wheel and motor shaft meet, no spin. Hey Joe how are you sir. I have a Ryobi extend it weed Wacker that's starts then dies right out. Do you have any idea why
Check the switch, it could be intermittent connections. Also Mae sure nothing is wrapped around the shaft to the head.
Thanks, on mine was the black wire
Very helpful examples and description of fixes. Thanks!
Thanks!
anyone know what screw driver to use to get the main cover off? the protector cover was just a phillips but the main cover screws are in a deep pocket and i can't tell what they are, they don't look like phillips. it kinda looks like a hex key.
never mind, it's a star.

Thanks for the heads up. All fixed up now.👍👍
Great!
Thanks Joe. Create video. I have the p2008 and the head keeps on flying on the trimmer. The head is threaded on but flys off right away. Am I missing a piece ?
Hmmm I’m not sure. If you are threading it on is it tight or does it bottom out? Maybe try some loctite on the threads.
@@joestoe1610 My neighbour has the same model and it looks like the head is spinning the wrong way. I have no clue on why that is
I was just going to go buy a new one, but after watching your video I decided to give it a try and see if the lose wire is the problem. So on my way. I'll let you know f that was it.
Let me know, usually it’s something easy.
Thanks for saving my trimmer and $100. Cheers!
Great! Glad my video helped!
Need to know how to change the string head on a 18 v ryobi trimmer. String not advancing
Good idea for a video, thanks
Before you take it apart... Make sure the locking nut that connects the top trigger and bottom half is tight. Once I tightened up the large locking nut, my intermittent problem disappeared and it ran like new again. I also had to clean the grease off the battery terminals, the charging terminals, and the terminals in the trimmer. In my case it's a trimmer/edger.
Ha, nice! I had the same issue when trimming for my Aunt.
Thank you, that was it!!!
The terminals in the trimmer? Guess I'd better look that up. I'm definitely gonna try these things FIRST, sounds much easier.
My black wire came disconnected. Seems to have pulled out of the terminal. How can I fix this?
Thank you for the video! Fixed my problem!
Glad it helped!
I took mine apart last week and thought it was grass twisted around the motor shaft that caused the issue. I taped the wires together but didn't really inspect the connections. Now it's not working again.
I'll check the connections and use the butt splicers this time!

Strange!
Would be nice to know at the outset what exactly you are repairing.
I don’t think I knew what the problem was until I opened it up and found the broken wire. This was my first video.
@@joestoe1610 .... ahhh, I see.
Whats the name of tool to take off the screws? Let me know thanks
I got the red wire pulled out from the black wire(s) connected. Assuming pair the red with the blacks and I’m set. (No eyeglasses is why I’m asking)
thanks very well done that is just what i needed
I have a ryobi easy edge string trimmer.
I want to replace the motor but cant get the head unit off. It spins when I try to twist off.
Any suggestions?
Hmmm I’m not familiar with that one yet.
Thank you. This video was very helpful
Thanks! Hope you got your trimmer working !
Thank you. It was an easy fix.
I have a ryobi P2000 12" cordless string trimmer a I am trying to change the string head...do you have any suggestions?
I think that model is similar in that you simply take the cover off the bottom of the head and remove and replace the spool and then put the cover back on?
Thanks Joe ! worked like a charm
Great!
My problem is the the circular part at the bottom isn’t spinning freely. Feels like something is binding it up. It will run 10 seconds & then quit. It just doesn’t feel right when I spin it by hand.
Same. I will take it apart as he shows, but I don't think it's the wire.
That’s another problem. If the wire was broken it wouldn’t run at all.
I have the same weed eater and mine will not power on due to the holder not turning loosely that the string fits into. Do you know what it could be?
It is not the string spool but the round container it fits into.
Is it rubbing anywhere or is it stiff to turn in the motor? If it’s not rubbing or have anything jammed around the shaft like string or grass then the motor might be bad.
Awesome well done and simple
Thank you
Nice video. I don't have the same trimmer, but my P2005 has a similar motor + plastic reel holder as yours. I wanted to replace the head but I'm having trouble figuring out how to move the plastic head from the motor --- I don't suppose you have any ideas?
Do you want to remove the entire head assembly or just remove the string spool?
If you want to remove the entire head assembly chances are you have to remove the screws farther up the handle. On mine the handle screws hold everything together. After that there’s got to be a few screws holding the motor to the head. Look closely they are probably there
Do I put the white wire and twist together with red
Can I just twist the wires together and cover with electrical tape?
Yes but they might come apart later on..or never, give it a go!
Thanks! Don't know whether this will work on my Black and Decker weed eater, but I'm going to take it apart and check it out. Good video!! :-)
Yes check it out, there might be a loose or broken wire
Absolutely should’ve watched the video first!
How do you replace a carbon brushes of this ryobi??
I never tried so don’t know
What tool did you use for screws
My will spin but stop anything to fix it?
Check that no grass or debris is wrapped around the shaft. Check for loose wires at the motor and the switches. Also maybe spray some contact cleaner on the switch contacts.
Wish mine was an easy fix like this but it was not the cause. Still trying to figure it out.
Check the switch in the handle. The switch moves around a little and sometimes breaks a connection.
I appreciate your help . Thank uou.
Thx,

My Ryobi trimmer likes to stop working when I get around a heavily needed trimming area. I take the battery out and place it back in over the course of 5 seconds and it starts to work again until it's under pressure again.
Anyone ever experience this problem?
I'm thinking maybe battery connections???
My bigger Ryobi trimmer does this sometimes but it’s always because the battery is about dead
@@joestoe1610 I'll try to pay more attention to that. Thx
My red wire frayed and separated from the motor. Looks like I’m toast as there are clips that look permanent at motor head and I ain’t getting in. Prolly owned it 8 yrs but not that many spoils of wire or hours. Whatever….HD says $59
It worked. It was the white wire.
Thank you!
Thanks 👍
