  • In the far reaches of NE Washington you will find the historic mining towns of Ione and Metaline Falls. These towns were founded around 1910 to house miners who worked in the Mammoth and Morning lead-zink mines.
Limestone mining for cement manufacturing was also a major employer. The cement companies closed in 1990 after 80 years of operation. Cement silos still dominate the Metaline Falls skyline.
Metaline Falls, definitely off the beaten path, has been named one of the 100 Best Small Arts Towns in America. It also was the site for filming "The Postman" (1997) starring Kevin Costner, Will Patton and Larenz Tate.
This sequence of videos and stills were captured with a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camera and edited with Microsoft Movie Maker and Adobe Premier CS6.

This little rural corner of Washington is one of the most special places in the PNW in my opinion. Also easy access from Sullivan Lake nearby over the pass into spectacular Priest Lake via scenic NF-302, a popular road with some local Boy Scout troops.

Diane, thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Good luck to your husbands new job and do have a fun time exploring this charming, hidden corner of Washington state. I have been there twice and will go back next summer. Dave in Montana.

I grew up in Ione, then moved to the Silver Valley (Pinehurst) to finish high school. You will love Ione to Metaline Falls.

Was so looking forward to staying in Ione and visiting Boundary Dam, but the fires in summer 2021 caused us to change our itinerary and we didn't get above Spokane. I still hope visit the area SOON!

@@davidegg22 Thanks Dave, I'm sure it will. There are a lot of things I took for granted back in 6th, 7th grade. They take on a whole new meaning now.
For example tossing little gumball machine parachute men over the cliff above the bridge that crosses the river into Metaline Falls. Thought it would be neat to see them drop that distance. Didn't work out that way there is a big up draft that runs up that cliff. The updraft took our parachute men up and back over our heads and lost behind us far over the trees. My mother would have had a fit if she knew we were up stsnding on the edge of that cliff. Now I'm getting flash backs. I delivered the newspaper in Metaline Falls as a kid. Every day the dogs would chase me. By the time I finished my route I had every dog in Metaline falls out front of my Grandma's Hotel.

@@BADALICE Awesome stories you shared, many thanks! Isn't it great to visit our childhood communities? Seeing pictures and video help pull some of the best memories but actually walking the streets of your old neighborhood will certainly unleash a flood of emotions and stories. You will have a meaningful time in July. I know you will enjoy every minute of your visit. Dave in western Montana.

Sadly, the train station was torn down and replaced by a parking lot this summer. I live across the street....it's such a shame. I loved that building.

What a shame! All I can ask is WHY???? Some people jsut don't seem to appreciate American history. Seems there might have been plenty of open land to build a parking lot :(

This is why I try to capture every-day views of places I explore. One day it will only be a memory, or if I was lucky to capture it, a digital representation. It is always sad to see a structure replaced with, of all things, a parking lot! We need to preserve the past since it is our only connection to our roots. Thanks for viewing my video and commenting on the current state of affairs. Winter well. Dave in Montana.

I want to make clear that I'm speaking of the Yellow Train Station in Ione. I was able to salvage some old doors a table and a chair from the Station. The owners pretty much gave everything away.

    • @davidegg22

suramsee I made the assumption that it was the building in the first scene. It looks like it was a well constructed train station. It probably sat empty for years and would take too many dollars to bring it up to code. Thanks for the clarification! Cherish the doors and other items that were salvaged. Thanks again! Dave.

nice place but, loaded with racist to include the local small town what passes for a news paper.
This is the birthplace of the white privileged karens who can't answer simple discussions with cited facts.
Wouldn't live there for any amount of money.
Not with what I know is present

@Dangus Changus Try making me punk.
Don't like the negative about the area do you?
Maybe you need to do a little history reading about it all.

@Dangus Changus and all your labels don't do a thing for you.
All it does is show what level of intelligence you DON'T have.
      Care to meet punk?
I know that area real well and the chances of you walking out are NONE.
You have no idea who you are playing with and it just might get you in a position where you won't be running your mouth.
Now run along little boy and go play with your white racist rag up there.
      Selkirk Sun....
      more like
White Supremacy running scared because of some bitch, who can't deal with the real world.
