This is one of my favourite videos of yours that I keep coming back too. So many great recs that I've added to my TBR! I love how passionate you are about them all :) Whilst I'm here I'll drop you a couple of recommendations for the UK, if you ever get to visit. Primarily, PLEASE don't fall into the trap of only seeing London and the surrounding area. For sure, the south of England has some beautiful spots (including Brighton! A gorgeous seaside town with a beautiful promenade and seafront palace), but the countryside and smaller towns are a must, as well as the UK's other three countries!! Yorkshire is gorgeous, York itself is a beautiful city and has a very well-preserved old town with little cobbled streets. I live in Edinburgh in Scotland and it's my favourite city in the world (bias, I know, but really!). It's SO beautiful, it has such a rich, spooky, gothic history (the ghost tours are brilliant!), is super close to both the sea (with neighbourhoods right on the harbour like Leith and Newhaven) and hills - the Pentland mountains are easy to access by bike. There is also an extinct volcano in the city called Arthur's Seat (look it up) and it gives gorgeous views of city and beyond. Elsewhere in Scotland, make sure you get up North, maybe to west coast, where I'm from, and do some island hopping; some examples include the Isle of Skye, Iona (world-renowned for being a holy island and the birthplace of Scottish Christianity), Staffa (famous for puffins! There are literally thousands of them at the right time of year), and the wee isles; Eigg, Rum and Muck. Glasgow is a brilliant city too - a wee bit more rough and ready than the capital but super charming because of this - with an amazing nightlife and foodie scene + some fabulous museums! I sound like a someone being paid to attract tourism to Scotland so I'm gonna stop now, lol. But I hope you make it over here some time! x

Thanks so much for such a great comment, Leo! I'm sorry for my extremely late reply, but reading this made me feel really good, so I wanted to comment back anyway. @@violet_elo As easy as it'd be to say I read every book on the list, I ended up buying, their eyes where watching god and not wanted on the voyage. I never got around to reading them properly, just recommendations from friends / life stuff got in the way. But this is a good reminder to read them to be honest. I appreciate the reply, you're definitely going out of your way to reply to these comments, it shows. I'm sure it's not the easiest time wise to get around to. Keep doing what your doing, it seems like it's helping people out and I look forward to that other book video sometime in the future.
Hi from a UK fan 🥰 When you come to the UK … come to the Cotswolds and Stratford upon Avon. Couple of book recommendations… cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee, Norwegian wood by Haruki Murakami, the distant land of my father by bo Caldwell
It's been a while, so I forget the specifics of the story, but as someone who grew up white, relatively wealthy, and almost completely surrounded by relatively wealthy white people, I think the most important thing Salvage the Bones taught me was compassion for people who _don't_ "rise above their circumstances", like I was taught to expect poor people (especially poor black people) to do. That has stuck with me over the three years it's been since I read this. I think I went into the book with a lot of expectations about what it would say and who the characters would become... none of those expectations came to fruition, and I felt the strong sense of being asked to show the characters some grace anyway. Whether or not it _shaped_ my journey toward reading the things I read and caring about the causes I care about now, it was definitely a stepping stone.
Living for all these long, in-depth videos! Learning so much! Thanks for taking the time to share with us, but it seems like you might enjoy being able to talk to us about all these books and share your knowledge with us. Again, your explanations continually include explanations of simple aspects that another "teacher" may overlook as common knowledge (i.e. Frankenstein not actually being the monster) and I really appreciate that.
You are so welcome! I thought about sharing more about specific books, but I didn't want to ruin any plot points or give any spoilers for anyone. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and appreciated my little tidbits. :] I hope you are having an excellent weekend!
This has been my go-to video to fall asleep to for the past few days. Every night I make it through a few more books before passing out so maybe I'll actually hear the end by the end of the week. You have a really cool and nice vibe and I like your lower pitch of voice. It seems like asmr is all about cranial nerve exams and medical roleplays, which is also nice, but I much prefer more personal subjects so this was really great.
Oooo this is lovely thanks elo. I’m definitely going to get Persuasion as I live near Bath in the UK and hadn’t heard of this novel. Stone Henge is near me and I’d definitely recommend it for a visit if you do ever make it over here. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous, you can wander for miles. Also I’ve never been but as a book lover I’d love to visit where the Brontë sisters lived up near the moors in Yorkshire, Jane Eyre is my absolute favourite read xXx
Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy Persuasion! I'm pretty envious of your location 😍 And Jane Eyre is amazing! The Brontës were so brave and cool and smart.
Thanks for the recommendations Elo. I'm far from being an avid reader, and having aphantasia surely doesn't help, but I can still enjoy a good book once in a while. Will definitely have a look at Persepolis though.
Hey, I have aphantasia too. Its very common, maybe up to a quarter of the population. I still love fiction, and often have very vivid dreams when I read a good book before bed.
You are so welcome, and wow! As someone commented below, I, too, had to look up aphantasia -- what an interesting way to be wired! I wonder how that impacts what you see and digest.. if it is more intense or enjoyable than for others. Graphic novels might be the perfect fit for you then, and Persepolis is a great start! :D

Hello elo! I rarely comment on videos. I found much wisdom in your book choices and delivery of your recommendations. In the bitter environment on the world wide web and in our political discourse; your calm passionate delivery of non-main stream books is refreshing. As a parent to two young men about your age it pains me hear your family does not embrace you for who you are. I miss my boys everyday. We live six hours apart. I am very proud of you! Keep doing what you do! I can feel that you are making a difference in people's lives.
Hey Alex! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video and have become a presence in my little community :] I so very much appreciate your support and kindness. I'm sorry there is such a long separation between you and your children; they are very lucky to have you. ❤ Thank you again!
Thanks for a really interesting chat about your favourite books; Its great to listen to someone passionate about reading; This is have been my favourite of your videos though I really do love listening to your calming voice A couple of things - I do love the Millhone books too, I've probably read about half of them And I'm glad you consider yourself an Anglophile.. but the UK has changed since the days of Austen and Forster!
Hey! Have you read the entire Sue Grafton series? I tried starting it but can't get past the first few pages. Does it get better? I love your channel and play your videos over and over. You are my daughter's age and you is so smart and you speak so eloquent. BTW I'm not far in Georgia!
Ha! I just discovered you today and I had immediately picked up on the World of Warcraft vibes and now I see your bookshelf is full of WoW products! That's crazy! lol At the moment I'm addicted to your hotel reservation video. It caught me off guard as I was getting ready for work I was tingling hardcore. Awesome! {:^D
I love it when asmr is combined with book recommendations (I'm a book worm myself). I don't think there's as wide a range of modern/contemporary Chinese novels that has been translated into English as that of the Japanese ones. If sci-fi is your thing, try Cixin Liu's "Three-body Problem", which is realistic in a lot of ways in terms of the mentality of the contemporary Chinese society. Anything by Eileen Chang, a female Chinese author of the 1940s and 50s is worth reading. Her works have beautiful prose and her insights into human emotions and relationships have this "piercing" quality. And if you like magical realism, try Mo Yan's "Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out", which is an observation of the Chinese rural society in the 20th century through the eyes of a landowner, who died and reincarnated as various farm animals (I think there was a donkey and a duck). Yu Hua's "To Live" has a similar theme, in that it also recounts a period in history of China through the eyes of an individual, but is of a much realistic style. It's about a man recalls how he is reduced from the son of an affluent landowner to a pauper sleeping on the street in quite a matter-of-fact tone. I hope you'll find some of these recommendations interesting. Thanks for your videos!
Hey, Sophia - thank you so much for the book recommendations! Since filming this, I've read "South of the Border, West of the Sun," which was suggested by another commenter, but I hadn't heard any other Asian suggestions yet, so I really appreciate it! I'm definitely going to check all of these out. Thank you again, and I hope that you're doing well!
@@violet_elo Hey, I hope things are getting better over there, and glad to hear that you're trying Asia literature! For some reason, I've only read one or two of Murakami's works (So many books, not enough time :P). I quite like Natsuo Kirino and Shion Miura's novels. Both are female Japanese authors and both have multiple works that have been turned into films. (I highly recommend Shion Miura's "The Great Passage" - the book and the films.) Oh gosh, I'm rambling. Well, that's the "recommendation of the day". Wish you all the best!
Thank you Elo! I am the same way with books - I used to have to stop at a payphone (I'm that old) to ask my mom how to get places I had been a million times, because before I got my license to drive, I had been sitting in the car, reading, while she drove. She would have to shake me out of my reverie to get out and bring my hockey equipment in and get ready, or whatever was necessary wherever we had arrived. It was a bit frustrating, not to naturally have the internal mapping that most of my friends seemed to have without effort. lol This was great, and you have excellent taste in literature. Thanks for sharing.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, and I can relate to your head being in the "reading clouds." Few things are better, I think :] I hope you've been doing well!
Thanks so much, Heather! I've thought about becoming an English or literature teacher many times. Book club might be more feasible at the moment right now! :]
Thanks so much! The Archive is four stories combined into one larger book -- some of my absolute favorites! And Papa Chris Metzen's only novel-length contribution :]
My favorite asmr artist! I hope you had a happy and save 4th! So, have you ever heard of Ithaca NY? Or visited? So hard to type when you give me tingles! Nice hair style!!!
I love this book recommendation video and honestly your taste in books is *superb*. Do you have a goodreads account by chance? definitely would love to see another books asmr video as well!
Hey, thank you so very much! I do not have a goodreads account, but I am working on some more book/literature ASMR videos. I hope that you are doing well, and I appreciate the kind comment!
I know a couple ppl who could sit and take with you for hours on just your Sue Grafton collection alone!! Also, what do you mean we won't see more of your new hair?? It looks fantastic, and I'd love to see more of it.
Despite not knowing her personally, I miss Sue. She was the best! And don't worry, I'm not shaving my head or anything -- I just can't manage the style on my own 😅
I've just started this video but wow, your hair looks great. Happy hair cut😉. Having now watched more, please, if you ever come to the U.K dont just visit England. Scotland and Northern Ireland arguably have much more to offer in terms of scenic countryside and Wales also has beautiful mountanious regions. The U.k must seem really small to you but it is incredibly diverse in both landscape and culture across the different nations.
Thank you so much! I would definitely want to see it all, to be honest! My not-so-far-off ancestors all migrated from Ireland, and I've always felt a strong desire to go see where they were forced to run from. I sometimes wonder what I'd be like if they had never left!
Wow, Ireland needs to be your first stop then! I've recently been doing my family tree, It's really fascinating how the events of history shape who and where we are today.
I'm an Anglophile too. If I had my way, I would have an English breakfast every day without the black pudding. I love British Bands, British Writers(Byron,Shakespeare all those wild cats). Last night, I discovered a play by Shakespeare I never heard of even though I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from VCU called Measure From Measure. I call potato chips crisps and fries chips. Flight time from Richmond, Va to London is 9 hours 45 minutes. Some airlines could take as long as 33 hours based on stop over destination and waiting duration. D.C. to London nonstop is 1,104 dollars, and it's 3,741 miles from Richmond,Va to London. At VCU one of the courses I took was African Female Writers in Literature. Beloved by Toni Morrison was required reading. I was obsessed with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein that I wrote a term paper on it and named the band I was in with my brother Dr. Frankenstein's Victim. I would love to go to the United Kingdom, but I'm a panicky flyer and they say to really see England you have to rent a car, but I can't because I'm physically challenged and can only drive an automatic with hand controls. Driving on the left side of the road and the steering wheel on the right would blow my mind anyway. I called my local library to get a copy of There Eyes Were Watching God and Persuasion. I will let you know when I get them and start reading them. When I was a kid, when it was time to play Cowboys and Indians, I wanted to be the Indian, and my favorite football team is The Redskins. Even though I was raised Christian, Judaism and the Islamic faith has fascinated me. I have read the bible cover to cover, and now I want to eventually read the Quoran. One of the books in your video the author's name is Gail that's my deceased mother's name. The book you mentioned about the Blues; legend has it that Robert Johnson used to play the guitar and people would leave the venue because he was terrible, and one day he left town for a while, and when he came back from the crossroads he played the guitar better than the best guitarists. To end this long comment I must say that my father wishes I was someone else, and I'm chuffed that we are outcasts with so much in common intellectually, and your hair is so glamorous.
Wow, that's a lot of interesting similarities! Thanks for leaving such a great comment! :D I'm sorry to hear, though, that you have similar issues, along with all the good stuff. I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.
A book out of your normal reading pattern I think you might enjoy is: "The Centurions" Novel by Jean Lartéguy. It is a historical fiction book. The author takes a defeat and shows how to learn lessons and apply them in the future actions. I would like to hear your thoughts on it in a future video.
id recommend trying haruki murakami as a starter Japanese author, many of his books are set in japan too. South of the border, West of the sun is a good one to start with, its very short so u would finish it in a day probably, and one of my favorites by him .
Howdy! Their Eyes Were Watching God was required reading for an English class that I recently completed. It was an amazing book that really illustrated how we can change and adapt from our life experiences. I agree with some of your previous comments, your hair stylist did a great job, you look very pretty. Also, I see you, War Crimes... :)
Hello Elo. A fascinating little book reviewing video. I've certainly made a note of some of the titles you have reviewed. Reservation Blues is definitely the one that attracted my attention. Probably because I am interested in native Americans and their culture. Well done, by the way, for bouncing back from a difficult time on your struggle bus. The hair is stunning. You look marvellous on screen. Keep doing your captivating presentations.
Hi Neil! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video, and I hope you do check out Reservation Blues! I really appreciate your encouragement and kindness, and I will do my best to keep creating videos worth watching! I hope you're having a great weekend 🤗
Hi Elo. I'm so delighted to hear that you're an Anglophile...frankly, we need all the friends we can get right now. With your indulgence, I'd like to give you a bit of information about my little area of this little island. I am a Yorkshireman and Yorkshiremen are notoriously and fiercely proud of their county. I am no exception! Yorkshire is a combination of outstanding, natural beauty, agriculture and industry (possibly somewhat akin to Texas) and we live on the southern border of North Yorkshire in a little market town called Skipton (Anglo-Saxon 'Sheep Town'). If you want a snapshot of the character of the county and its people, I recommend reading the country vet books by James Herriot. They are very light reading but they paint a good picture. The latest TV series is also worth a look and if you need help with some of the words used, I can be your Yorkshire dialect coach. As with several other areas of the UK, Yorkshire was one of the heartlands of the industrial revolution, largely known for coal mining and wool mills. Over the Pennines in Lancashire they had a huge cotton industry but here in Yorkshire it was wool, largely determined by the climates in those two counties. Sir Titus (pron Tight-us) Salt built a mill and a village (Saltaire) for his mill-workers, with houses, school, hospital, park and almshouses. This was at a time when most mill owners treated their workers as a consumable commodity. At the time, in Bradford, the life expectancy of a mill worker was around 30 years. In Titus Salt's Saltaire it was over 60 years. I went to school in one of the schools he built which still stands and is still a school. It was the industrialisation of parts of Yorkshire that led to the influx of people from Britain's colonies after WW2. Britain, of course, encouraged this influx to fill the breach left by the huge loss of men during two world wars and it is this that has resulted in the multi-culturalism that can now be seen in Yorkshire. It is a multi-culturalism that did not sit easy with white people and our new sons and daughters had a very difficult time integrating. This problem has not been entirely solved but we are getting there and generally our multi-cultural, multi-faith society works very well. You have to go a long way to find a better curry than those made in Yorkshire! Finally, England's current poet laureate, Simon Armitage, is a Yorkshireman and one of his predecessors, Ted Hughes, was a Yorkshireman...both white and both male I'm afraid. If you want to know anything else about any of the above, I'd be happy to help.
Way to go Joshua!!! 😍 Love Virginia Woolf...she was such a feminist badass. Oh, and clearly your ASMR is on such an epic scale that you're able to give your own leg tingles! 😊
Thank you! I think Joshua did a great job, too ^_^. And hell yeah! Woolf was a BAMF of the highest order! Lmao, I could do without giving my leg tingles -- not as pleasurable as the neck and head tingles 😋
@@violet_elo ha! As well as can be hoped. I'd never expect a response, but this has been a particularly strange year. So I think we can cut you some extra slack. Hope you've been well also.
Please do further book vids :) if you're interedted in the industrial revolution you'll want to come to Manchester! See why in the below vid! ruclips.net/video/JiLXFvACVuY/видео.html I'd also recomend Yorkshire.
I genuinely didn’t know the “classification” was the same. I’ve never had anyone who is Mexican (which many of my friends and classmates over the years have been!) identify as Native American. Our school system always skewed it towards the folks living in the 50 north american states, too. I’ll have to read more about that!
@@violet_elo Mexicans are native Americans. We were colonized by the Spanish so we're not recognized as such but if you know your history, then you are going to recognize yourself as one. At least that's my reasoning.
@@zoilalulu3798 i know this comment is old you’re statement is a huge contradiction. a majority of mexican people are of majority spanish decent, and can’t and shouldn’t identify as native american just because of our history 😭 mexico has a very prevalent indigenous population to this day, so it would be sorta ignorant to claim something that you know nothing about or have no ties to. i did one of those dna test and though it told me i’m 87% indigenous, i dont necessarily claim to be native because i have no connections to the culture or customs, but i do think it’s important to educate oneself instead of making generalizations and saying everyone from one country is native when that’s simply not the case. being indigenous is so much more than just history and percentages, but having connections to that lifestyle and culture

Hey Alex! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video and have become a presence in my little community :] I so very much appreciate your support and kindness. I'm sorry there is such a long separation between you and your children; they are very lucky to have you. ❤ Thank you again!
Very relaxing, and calming video.
Also, your hair and makeup look very lovely. The fringe was a great choice!
😊☺
Aww, thank you so much all around! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! ^_^.
Thanks for a really interesting chat about your favourite books; Its great to listen to someone passionate about reading; This is have been my favourite of your videos though I really do love listening to your calming voice
A couple of things - I do love the Millhone books too, I've probably read about half of them
And I'm glad you consider yourself an Anglophile.. but the UK has changed since the days of Austen and Forster!
Awesome! {:^D
Persepolis is fantastic. Have you read many other comics/graphic novels?
LowKey be dishing out the content this last week 👀👀 love to see it!
I've been trying! I'm glad you're enjoying it :D
It was a bit frustrating, not to naturally have the internal mapping that most of my friends seemed to have without effort.
lol
This was great, and you have excellent taste in literature. Thanks for sharing.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, and I can relate to your head being in the "reading clouds." Few things are better, I think :] I hope you've been doing well!
Loved this! I think you’d make an excellent leader of a book club or even a literature or English teacher!
Thanks so much, Heather! I've thought about becoming an English or literature teacher many times. Book club might be more feasible at the moment right now! :]
Omg I should have subscribed earlier! Awesome video 🙌🏾
Love the Warcraft collection you have..what is the one that says archive on it though? I have never seen it before!
Thanks so much! The Archive is four stories combined into one larger book -- some of my absolute favorites! And Papa Chris Metzen's only novel-length contribution :]
@@violet_elo No problem, oh okay sounds cool. I love the lore! Thanks
Omgoodness this video is great 🥰
My favorite asmr artist! I hope you had a happy and save 4th! So, have you ever heard of Ithaca NY? Or visited? So hard to type when you give me tingles! Nice hair style!!!
Thanks so much, Sean!
@@violet_elo you're welcome so much!!!! I love how you understand ASMR!!! I LOVE HOW YOU HAVE A KIND HEART!!!!
@@violet_elo super excited about the next one! Hope you're doing well too :)
Btw definitely interested in "the essay linking this to Prometheus" too :-) Is that up somewhere?
I love books almost as much as I like your curls. 😁
Thanks so much, Chris! ^_^.
Timothy Findley is such an interesting writer. You might also like Kazuo Ishiguro.
I know a couple ppl who could sit and take with you for hours on just your Sue Grafton collection alone!! Also, what do you mean we won't see more of your new hair?? It looks fantastic, and I'd love to see more of it.
Despite not knowing her personally, I miss Sue. She was the best! And don't worry, I'm not shaving my head or anything -- I just can't manage the style on my own 😅
@@violet_elo I kinda guessed that, but now I'm imagining you with the sides of your head shaved and the top dyed sea green!!
hair looking great!
Thanks a bunch, Paul!
If you enjoyed Persepolis, I'd recommend watching the film (animation) 😊
A book out of your normal reading pattern I think you might enjoy is: "The Centurions"
Novel by Jean Lartéguy. It is a historical fiction book. The author takes a defeat and shows how to learn lessons and apply them in the future actions. I would like to hear your thoughts on it in a future video.
Thanks so much for the recommendation, too! I'll definitely check it out! :D
You have such a raspy, relaxing voice.
Thanks so much! :]
Why did you label Persuasion a “white American classic”? Isn’t it a 19th century British novel?
Just discovered your channel love it subscribed
Thanks so much! Glad to have you here :D
id recommend trying haruki murakami as a starter Japanese author, many of his books are set in japan too. South of the border, West of the sun is a good one to start with, its very short so u would finish it in a day probably, and one of my favorites by him .
Murakami is my god and Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is my bible...you have AWESOME taste! 👍
Thanks so much for the suggestion! I'm adding his works to my book list! :D
Howdy! Their Eyes Were Watching God was required reading for an English class that I recently completed. It was an amazing book that really illustrated how we can change and adapt from our life experiences. I agree with some of your previous comments, your hair stylist did a great job, you look very pretty. Also, I see you, War Crimes... :)
I'm so glad you had the pleasure of reading that book, as well! Thank you so much for your kind words, and Lok'tar Ogar!
U should read the world of warcraft books or play the game. The characters are so cute and mini chibi mini figs with mini deeps
Why don’t you have 1m subs yet? You deserve it
😭😭 Thank you so much
Very nice video Elo. Great job👌🏻👍🏻👏🌹🌹
Thanks so much! Always such a pleasure to see your comments ^_^.
elo ASMR yes. Been your subs long time. I rremember when u had only 300 subs. Love your soft spoken videos👌🏻🌹👍🏻💃
Nice! Thanks for the advice 👍😉
So glad you enjoyed it, Oscar! I hope you're having a great weekend!
This is great!
Thanks so much, Chris! :D
📕Currently reading Island by Aldous Huxley and Frank Herbert's God Emperor of Dune.📕🤓
I will have to look in to those both! Enjoying them? :D
Please do another one of these!!
I'm working on some more now! :D
Wonderfully done
Laura recommended and was very right. New sub.
Glad to have you, Steven! So sorry for the late reply, and I hope you've been doing well!
See why in the below vid! ruclips.net/video/JiLXFvACVuY/видео.html
I'd also recomend Yorkshire.
I just finished Their Eyes Were Watching God and boy oh boy...
Measure For Measure (typing error, sorry)
Not to worry! :]
Seen I book on chess.... Are you a chess player Elo?
Sadly, I am not. My forethought isn't good enough to compete with the pros!
English degrees unite! Hi 5!
Woohoo! :D *high fives back*
you sound like Emma Stone
I'll take that as a compliment! I love her voice. Thanks!
You sort of look like Pam from The Office in this video.
I get that a lot!
Looks like Melissa benoist
So I've heard 😅
@@violet_elo 😂😂😂😂
If you've had Mexican classmates or friends, you've met Native Americans.
LUV UR NAME I CANSPELL LOL.
Ciao Elo

Persuasion - an American Classic? Really?
This was no informative and relaxing! Thank you for the public transport shout out 😊
I'm so glad you liked it, and of course! Public transport is just as worthy as all the others ^_^.
you are beautiful !
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoyed the video! :D
