*Correction: I did some Googling as I was editing this video, just out of curiosity, and I learned that Octavia E. Butler has already passed on and that "Wild Seed" was actually published in 1980! That should only speak to the caliber of her writing, though, as it seems like a brand new story. Although I'm sad to know she's gone, I look forward to diving into her catalogue one (sure to be) excellent work at a time.

You just became one of my favorite ASMR content creators ever. I really appreciate the willingness to so comfortably and thoughtfully discuss such an important topic in a relaxing way.

Love your videos, particularly this sort. They are great for going to sleep as your voice is so relaxing, great for a calming background noise whilst working (from home in these strange times) but also your content is very interesting to listen to when I have time to do that. You are obviously a very intelligent, well-read and thoughtful person. Look forward to further videos like this.

I love your intellectual review. You have an amazing capacity to not just connect but explain. I complete my doctorate degree this year and I can tell you that you rival any professor I had through graduate school.
    Great video my friend.

Oh my goodness, this is fantastic. You have a wonderful, relaxing voice and manner but what you discuss is fascinating. I am hanging on every word and will definitely be looking at some of these authors.
    Many, many thanks.

First off, you're mic was perfect. Second you look beautiful as always. Third, this was exactly what I needed. I say that because here in Wisconsin we got snow yesterday and thunderstorms today. So after shoveling yesterday and having my power knocked out today, I need this lol. Hope all is well.

Hi elo! Love your book review/recommendations! Have you tried Yaa Gyasi‘s Homegoing? It was quite a popular one a few years back (I think), and it's a family saga type of story following mainly female characters(which is up my alley). I listened to the audio book, and the narrator had such a compelling voice as well. Can't wait to see more of your videos!

I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read any books from those authors. This will definitely change, and since you already mentioned Sula in your previous book recommendations, I think I'll start with that one. Thanks for the video, while being very relaxing, that was also very interesting and educational

Thanks for a few great suggestions...if I could add one more to the list, I simply can't recommend Eddie Glaude Jr's new book *_Begin Again_* highly enough! It's a deep exploration of James Baldwin's writings and their relevance to the struggles that are going on today. As someone who hadn't read a lot of Baldwin's work, it was a great introduction...but even Baldwin aficionados love this book for applying his vision to the current struggle. 🥰

Awesome stuff. You know what's so ironic about Faulkner? I have the exact same criticism of Ralph Ellison's "The Invisible Man". As incredible as that novel is, it feels so much more wordy than it needs to be. You've got a phenomenal list. While I'm cheating, I'm adding a couple of books in the present day that a lot of your subscribers/viewers can get something out of. First and foremost..."Stamped" by Ibram X. Kendi. I think it's the most important book of the last five years. Eddie Glaude's "Begin Again" is also something worth reading...anything that dives in to the work of James Baldwin is a must read. "Black Boy" and "Native Son" by Richard Wright should be required reading in American schools...but we know what that's about. I feel as a Black man, my existence would be incomplete without the works I have read from both Black men AND women in my lifetime.

I think I get what you’re saying. It’s almost like if the women were as direct as the men they would be perceived a different way than the men coming forward 🤔. Regardless, they are all well written novels. There are def some I haven’t read yet. I’ve always thought ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ sounded so beautiful, poetic, and intriguing. So I’m glad someone else thought the same thing. This video was well worth the wait. I appreciate your time and effort! Thanks Elo :3

Thank you. It's critically important that we recognise and acknowledge the issues and struggles faced daily by people from other ethnic and cultural groups than our own (in my case, white, British Male...yeah, I'm one of the very lucky ones).
Let's hope that in years to come all people will just be seen and treated as people and not as 'others'.
    Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing these lovely books, Elo! Have you read Octavia's "Parable of the Sower"? It is absolutely amazing, and so timely, as well as full of life lessons on hope and resilience!

I also read Their Eyes Were Watching God last semester in college and I loved it, The Color Purple is still on my physical tbr shelf, I've read The Bluest Eye awhile ago and loved it, and just recently read Beloved and it broke me; Toni is a force to be reckoned with, her writing is too good for this world. I'm currently reading Dawn by Octavia Butler and damn, I'm eager to finish the Xenogenesis series! I really want to pick up Between the World and Me but have yet to find it. It's almost weird for me to say that I loved all of these novels written by Black authors for obvious reasons based on the content, but they shook me so much that I can't not love them, if that makes sense... I think about us as white readers reading Black literature and how our privilege plays a part in perceiving them and the impact it has on us, because we've never known this level of pain and after reading it we're absolutely stunned. Thank you for all of these recommendations!!
Some other books I highly reccomend by Black authors are Cane by Jean Toomer, The Pagoda by Patricia Powell, Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson, All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson, Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile, I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem by Maryse Condé, The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus, and Freshwater as well as The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi ❤️

What was the Countee Cullen work which you couldn't get through? Was it a book of his poetry, or was it his novel, "One Way to Heaven"?
