😄 I once read a _Star Trek_ novel that had a formal event with a young lady wearing an especially revealing gown.
Picard and Crusher were dancing together and Crusher indicated the young lady and said, "What is keeping that gown on?"
Picard replied, "I'd say the eyes of every young man in the room."

The costume designer for TOS, William Ware Theiss, also worked on TNG Season One. He's the one who coined the Theiss Titillation Theory: "The sexiness of an outfit is directly proportional to the perceived possibility that a vital piece of it might fall off."

Denise (Tasha) is one of my favorite actresses, I saw her in a movie before Star Trek and then when I found out she was gonna be on TNG, I was thrilled, she was one of my favorite characters as well. I never knew she was leaving before the episode aired because I was a kid and didn't have access to magazines or any media that would tell me so it was quite the shock--so much that I stopped watching the show and didn't go back till season 3 (Though I have gone back since and watched 2) :) Loving your journey and can't wait to see how you feel about all of what is to come!

With regards to Dr. Crusher and Captain Picard, they've got a lot of history there: Jean-Luc Picard and Jack Crusher (Beverly's husband and Wesley's dad) were best friends for years and served together aboard Picard's old ship, the U.S.S. Stargazer. Picard didn't meet Beverly until after she and Jack got together... and then Jack died, and Picard was the one to bring his body back to his family (as Wesley mentions in _Encounter at Farpoint_), so they've both spent a lot of years avoiding any feelings they may have for one another.

If you remember, the Office of the President of the Federation is in Paris, in Star Trek VI, the set of the office was in fact the redressed Ten Forward bar that is seen in the next season of TNG. And The Eiffel Tower is visible by the windows, as well as a model of it on a small table near the desk.

Court, now that you have seen "Skin of Evil", and you know Tasha gets offfed, go back and rewatch "Symbiosis", paying particular attention to the scene where Picard and Dr. Crusher exit the cargo bay. Specifically, look over their shoulders and watch Denise Crosby in the background. "Symbiosis" was filmed _after_ "Skin of Evil", even though it aired before it. This scene in the cargo bay would be the last scene Denise would film and Denise can be seen waving good-bye to the fans.

They recorded at least two takes of Tasha's goodbye; the one used, with her addressing each of them, and one with her looking straight ahead, which was the director's favoured version: he wondered how she'd know where they'd all be standing. It's not hard to imagine though, that a 24th century AI hologram would account for that!

A behind the scenes thing on We'll Always have Paris. Patrick Stewart was not a fan of it. He said he had no chemistry with this "ex girlfriend" and it hurt the show. He liked that it showed another version of Picard other then the stiff Captain, but didnt work. Also a long time note on Taha Yars exit. The producer on from TNG posted a twitter pic of her com badge this year. He said Denise Crosby gave it to him after she left the show as a goodby gift. She heard about it and replied to him that after her last sceen he walked up to her and pulled it off her unifrom telling her she would no longer need it. Then just walked away with it.

Hey, Courtney! The death of Tasha Yar took everyone by surprise who hadn't kept abreast of the media coverage. What made it affecting was its unceremonious nature since Armus murks her on a whim. The funeral and Data's reaction are highlights of Season 1. If you remember, Data had been intimate -- probably for the first time -- with Tasha and his thoughts will return to her over the course of the series.

20:35 🤺 I used to fence in my youth, decades ago, and from what I recall much of the _"flash"_ in the choreography they show us is more akin to sabre fighting, not fencing. There's little to no swinging in eppe or foil fencing. Although two consenting opponents can do whatever they want. But there are rules for professional fencing.🤺
If I got something wrong (not by omitting something), I welcome correction.

26:40 - To make this special effect work the actors had to move to the right as quickly and as naturally as possible. They need to stand away from that door before it opens again or the special effect is ruined. But Patrick Stewart stayed close to the door so it would help sell the effect even better. In fact his head was just a few pixels Away from overlapping.

Yes, it was pretty shocking that Lt. Yar died, but in retrospect I agree, it wasn't as if I was as emotionally invested in her character as I was with any of the TOS characters. However, the good thing is that now there is room for Lt. Worf to step up and get some much needed character development -- and I don't think I'm spoiling anything by saying that!
Interesting fact: Jenice Mannheim was portrayed by "Mama" Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & Papas!

TNG made me a Star Trek fan. There wasn’t a lot of Sci Fi on TV in the 80s so I was willing to watch anything with spaceships and lasers. I remember think the planets look like cheap sets but the Enterprise was convincingly real. Those first couple of seasons are a bit of a chore but they are really finding their voice and developing beloved characters. I’m excited for you to get to when the show hits its stride. On a final note, one of my first crushes was Tasha Yar and I cried when I watched Skin of Evil. It’s not a good episode but as a kid it really upset me. Live long and prosper!

Skin of Evil: You can go back to Symbiosis and watch the scene with Picard and Crusher leaving the cargo hold and see Yar break character and wave to the camera. Crosby had her goodbye party in the cargo set with the crew on the episode Symbiosis. Rick Berman sort of broke the mood by grabbing her com-badge so she wouldn’t keep it.
You picked up on Crosby’s performances in other reactions as being…off. At the mid-way point of S1, she checked out and grew frustrated with having nothing to do and the bad writing. You can tell she had enough of the BTS battles and production issues. She didn’t even want to show up on set some days.
BTW, there is a Reading Rainbow episode that was filmed during the Symbiosis/Skin of Evil era that LeVar Burton hosted. You can see an uninterested Crosby doing her lines. It is highly recommended that you watch the Reading Rainbow episode on YT.
Crosby would later come to regret her decision to leave because she grew close with the cast. Later, she would get closer to fans at conventions.
While the Crosby issue is dealt with, there is another major battle going on between an actor and producer that will also come to a head. Even to this day, not all of the tea has been spilled on what really happened. Some of it is still rumors. And, it is not who you think it is…
There is a looming writer’s strike that will shake things up for TNG too.
There will be episodes in TNG that will make you tear up a bit. There are a few in S3…

Trek is weird about cast members leaving the show. Realistically Starfleet crew should be getting reassigned all the time.
The version of this episode I made in my head Tasha kills the oil creature against the orders of Picard who was still attempting diplomacy, this could happen in the first fifteen minutes, and the rest of the episode is the argument over who had authority in that situation and is resolved with Tasha transferring to another ship.

Writing Denise Crosby out of the show could have been done differently and - unless there were some legal reasons behind it (like a clause in Crosby’s contract preventing Paramount from casting a different actress to replace her) - didn’t have to be definitive for the character of Tasha Yar. After all, she’s an officer - just reassign her, promote her, send somewhere or make her resign from Starfleet and go live somewhere). However, Yar’s death was (for me - and this is the contrarian in me speaking) the best part of “Skin of Evil”, otherwise an unremarkable and unimportant episode. She didn’t die in battle nor as a hero, there was no time for drama nor some pretentious monologue either; her death was clearly pointless, instant and permanent, presented in a cold, almost brutal way. That’s what real-life death is like - and that’s worth remembering.

Denise Crosby quit TNG for the same reason that Nichelle quit TOS after the first season: She didn't think that saying "hailing frequency open, sir" was a challenging role. But the production did something nice for her: Quitting a contract early can be detrimental to an actor's career, and so they continued to show her name in the opening credits to the end of season 1 just to show the rest of the industry that they weren't mad at her.
I didn't think much of the engineer of the week in "We'll Always Have Paris". Skipping tests after a manual alignment just to get minimal power seems like it set them back further than if he'd done it right the first time. It will be good when they settle that.
I consider both of these episodes to be among the weakest of season 1. Based on the Nielsen ratings, much of the audience seem to agree; they're in the 23rd percentile. Only four episodes rated lower, and one of them was a remake from the original series. One could argue, however, that "Skin of Evil" might be foundational to the series.
