Using the backbone makes the inflatable AE-kayaks reacting the same as a hard-shelled kayak. Including eventually having a problem with the pressure (I unwillingly experienced!) you are the same stable and save - in white water (2+)! And your are right, dear Emily: The disadvantage of drop stich is, that the boat does less slide IN the water, but does a way like swim ON the water. Next advantage of the backbone is the keel, that stretches clearly from bow to stern - and stabilises the paddling straight ahead. That is an important reason why I like the backbone so much. I use the backbone in both, Expedition (13 ft) and Convertable (15 ft.). - My TIP: Use vaseline to avoid the connections of the pipe's peaces against the frictional force metal-on-metal: My experience was, that after rough use the backbone was nearly unconnectable. Vaseline makes a good job, same in cold water or hot summer.

its the backbone as it tracks better and goes faster. Not as comfortable as the drop stitch

Yes the drop-stitch is far more comfortable and a more popular option :D

Which do you prefer? The backbone or the drop stitch floor? About to purchase one of the advanced elements kayaks and I am wondering which would fit me best.

Hi Neil, For me, the Backbone is probably a slightly better choice because I am very lightweight. If you are normal weight or above, the Drop-Stitch floor is an easier option. Cheers, Emily.

@@OzinflatablekayaksAu, huh, I thought the backbone was there for heavier people!

@@mortschubert3909 No, not necessarily. Each have their pros and cons. Cheers, Emily.

hello it is necessary to have the backbone if we have dropstich on the elite expedition ? please

Hi there! No it is not necessary. The drop-stitch acts as a performance enhancer and greatly helps with the rigidity and tracking of the kayak :)
