    This is GOLD. I agree with everything. I am a former public elementary school teacher turned homeschool mom. I love that we have the freedom to choose the best education for our children, but it can be damaging when someone is not prepared to PLAN and choose quality, expert reviewed, based on facts, curriculum. I've seen first hand the cycle of pulling kids out to homeschool, realizing it's not what you thought and putting them back in public school, then blaming the school for the child being behind so then pulling them back out and on and on. Public school teachers don't know it all, but there is oversight and they know how to look for material and how to learn about the subject before presenting it to the class, they don't have the option to skip over it or present it with a resource pulled willy nilly from the internet. Homeschool parents don't have that same oversight, and we know the honor system isn't 100 foolproof.
    At the end of the day, the right to homeschool is amazing, and it can be a wonderful experience when done right and with responsibility. Thank you for sharing your unpopular opinions!

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts and personal experience. I think homeschooling has the potential to provide a great education and experience for a child if the parent or guardian is willing to put in the work and take on the responsibility that comes with providing a quality education.

    Completely agree!!! Education is a right! We have homeschooled for 6 years so far because we think it is the best method available for guiding our children towards their own futures with their hearts and minds most ready to take on their own goals. It is a huge responsibility and, in choosing to share so much less of that effort with the rest of society, I find it critical to have a huge amount of organization and research and dedication to consistency despite life’s constant distractions. This lifestyle is a joy but it also very much an intensive full-time job to do well, in my opinion. I am always needing to reflect, prepare, read, consider…it’s been a large amount of effort just in the self-reflection that is needed to look for my own blind spots because this entire endeavor is to equip them to their own purposes and for lives which will be different than my own. I get nervous about homeschoolers who seem to think in terms of avoidance of the public education system but not so much in terms of any particular inspiration to something more, a positive goal defined. I don’t think we should remove a flawed but real education and pretend that simply anything is better by default - no, it takes a lot of work and will to create something better. I say this as someone who is a second-generation homeschooler and experienced the transition to college from homeschooling. I’m grateful for how smoothly that went for me and want my children to have that same confidence in their own preparations for the “real world.” Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really enjoy your videos.

    I live in NY and we do have curriculum standards, reporting and testing for homeschoolers. I'm glad! That said, there is so little follow up and quality control on the part of the school districts that you can really do whatever you want and/or downright lie, especially in the early years before testing is mandatory at 3rd grade.
    We are homeschooling because my son is gifted and academically advanced, especially in math, but also has developmental disabilities and the schools are not willing to meet his needs.
    My husband works in DEI and we are very academic. It sometimes feels like (some) conservative homeschoolers are more academic and most of the progressive homeschoolers around us lean delayed academics and unschooling. Oh, we are also a multiracial family!
    You and Love Learning Everyday make me feel seen!
    Thank you for this!

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. I think regulations are really hard to implement, but the lack of them I find concerning. I have found this website really helpful in navigating homeschool regulations responsiblehomeschooling.org
      I am intrigued by your statement on some conservative homeschoolers being more academically focused. I am curious how that works if most Christian based curriculum (at least that I’ve reviewed) tend to be heavily opinionated and not fact based. I think in general it is hard to find academically based homeschoolers. It seems like many want to get away from anything that is “public school” that sometimes they go too far on the other end of the spectrum.

    Yes, all of this! Lots of good points to think on. On a personal level I definitely benefit from being in a low-oversight state. I'm actually curious now if there is any kind of difference in outcomes for homeschooled kids based on the level of state oversight.

    • @michellegf
      @michellegf  Год назад +2

      That would be an interesting statistic to see. I think a lot of homeschool parents are doing what’s best for their kids but there will always be kids who fall thru the cracks or aren’t given an opportunity for a quality education because of whatever preconceived notions a parent may have. I just wish there was a way to safeguard kids that fall into that group.

    I saw that same video, and was horrified to see her talk about putting together a unit study on an area that she has an admitted lack of expertise in... to sell to others. Yikes. (Transparently, I was only watching because RUclips suggested it, but I generally question that individual's approach/choices and am not in any way aligned with her philosophies.)
    I am very very choosy about my curriculum, also. We look for fact-based, secular, written/overseen by experts in that field, and academically rigorous and aligned with learning standards. Thank you for speaking truth to the very loud majority of the homeschool community who does not seem to value those things and wish to underscore and lean into their "bubble" and prejudices.

      RUclips suggested it to me too! They were definitely way off the mark with that one 🤣 I appreciate your comment and sharing your perspective on it. I too find it helpful knowing I’m not the only homeschooler out there who seems to care about any type of credibility or standards. With that being said if you come across any curriculum or resources that fit into that category please feel free to share!

    Preach!!! 🙌 Saying your opinion louder in the face of contradictory evidence does not make your opinion true. Our science curriculum has a "baloney detection kit" that addresses these falacies in how people think when discerning truth. It's amazing and so needed in American society. Kids need to be exposed to different opinions because if they aren't while they're young, they will at some point when they're older and they won't know how to handle it. So yes, agree that there needs to be some accountability for homeschoolers to ensure kids are getting the basic education they have the right to receive.

I found they were becoming too much of a time suck for me.

    First, I enjoy all of the content you put out! Great videos and thoughts. I agree with everything you said in this video. This is my first year homeschooling my newly 6 year old. I must say that as a viewer I am influenced by all of the curriculum videos on RUclips, I am still looking for the "best" curriculum that works for us, but at the same time I keep reminding myself that we're just doing K-1 this year. Anything else is extra.

I was heavily influenced by social my first year of homeschooling, thats one of the reasons I take what I say on this channel so seriously. I also have to remind myself not to overdue it with my 1st grader. Up until 3rd grade, I really just focus on reading, writing and math. If she picks anything else up along the way I consider that a bonus!

    • @michellegf
      @michellegf  Год назад +1

      Sure! Here it is. I also added it to the description box for this video as well.
      Another element that I thought was important for academic preparation was the academic thinking process. Student grow up in an amplified society of loud, emotional, idiosyncratic, self assertive opinion. Everyone feels free to announce a confident opinion, even when the opinion has no basis in information, in fact, or in evidence. People aggressively insist that ridiculous statements are "true to me." In the academic world, logic does not work that way. There is little interest in what your unsupported opinion might be. You might have a right to speak your mind, but your mind can be wrong and can be shown to be wrong when the facts contradict it. Being free to say something does not make it true. Opinions that are contradicted by facts or that are formed in the absence of knowledge of the facts do not have the same status as conclusions that enjoy a foundation in information. In the academic world, when the facts show otherwise, you change your mind, and having attitude is not the equal of having education.

    I was just saying all of this to a friend the other day. I just don't understand all these homeschooling videos here on RUclips. My husband and I try our best not to complicate things when it comes to homeschool. Most children rather play instead of homeschooling anyway. All these RUclipsrs every year are changing up their children's curriculum saying this didn't work and that didn't work, but when I look up the curriculum they don't use the curriculum to it's full potential. This is messing up their children's education because every curriculum teaches concepts differently in Math and English Language Arts. This creates gaps in children's education. Homeschooling is not for lazy parents taking content out of curriculum. That's probably why it doesn't work. Parents have to be 100% committed or just let the schools do the teaching. This is the reason why some states have high restrictions against parents that choose to homeschool. We don't mind it though. We do educate our children. People stop changing curriculum every year. Plus, we don't allow our children to live in a bubble. We teach them about the world around them. This is why we don't use certain christian curriculum. You said everything I wanted to say. You are the best!
    Thanks...
