      Trying to create accurate imagery haha. Glad it worked. One day at a time. Today has been better. But it’s seems very inconsistent. Thanks for hanging out!

    Hey Jon, I had a microdiscectomy on my L5S1 a couple years back at 28y/o. Herniated disc had me to the point where I could hardly walk for nearly 6mo. Immediately after the surgery I felt like a new man, but a few months later I re-herniated bending over in a chair. I got an MRI to confirm, the pain wasn't as bad the first time around so I opted for a steroid injection. Took about a month and a half to really start feeling good again and I haven't had a problem since. I gradually got back in the gym, starting with machines and then moving on to free weights. After about a year and a half I worked up the courage to get under the bar for some squats and OHP. I am now under the bar a couple times a week at much lighter weights than I used to lift but it feels great. Just keep your ego in check and be cautious about loading your spine in the future, you have an excuse to never help friends move furniture again. I am feeling great today and I hope that injection works as well for you as it did for me. It's tough to see the light when you have chronic pain every day as an active dude, but it'll pass in time. There are no shortcuts to healing a herniated disc, just stay vigilant in your movements and back off of anything that doesn't feel right.

      Great to know. I’ve had two steroid injections. The discectomy surgery. And even an epidural steroid shot, and I’m still not getting any relief. It’s incredibly frustrating. So I’m not sure exactly what to do next. I’m glad you’re back to some free weights. I think I might be ok with not getting crazy heavy again. But man it’s definitely going to be a weird shift. Thanks for sharing! And stay safe out there.

      @@WhoIsJonHarris Don't be afraid to pump the brakes on working out for a bit. One thing I was always mindful of post op is avoiding anything that would cause pain that I'd associate with the herniated disc. If I moved or lifted something in a way that caused pain down my leg I'd immediately stop. I was very careful about that, as I wanted to give myself the best chance at recovery. It's not the type of pain you want to push through. All I really did for months was walk. I lost over 25lbs of muscle while I was injured/recovering. Muscle memory is a hell of a thing though and it basically all came back and some. Just gotta get more creative with leg training these days.

    It's not the sexist thing in the world, but deep breathing exercises helped me through a significant core injury. I would deep breathe in various positions (various laying, standing, kneeling, sitting on the floor without a chair positions) for time. I would never stay in a position too long that it became painful and I made a conscious effort to breathe with my tongue resting on the roof of my mouth and mouth closed. I then graduated to deep breathing in other positions when I intuitively felt like I could such as in plank and wall sit. This went on for at least a quarter of a year but probably longer (I still need to work on tracking my exercises so it probably was more like 6 months). I finally reintroduced dynamic exercises by using pull up assist bands (and my gym ring handles for some exercises) for my gym-goer routine exercises. I also added crawling and not overly aggressive body weight movements. I found that when I finally returned to my favorite exercises with implements other than bands, those were actually way easier after rehabbing this way.
    Best of luck to you!

      I think that’s the mindset. Taking care of these issues and making it a point to return to the things we enjoy. I’ve always been drawn the strength. More than anything. So what that looks like in the future is something to ponder for now. I’m just so impatient. And this is bringing that to light. Which might be the major lesson in all this. Happy Fitnessing Brother. Glad to see you here every time I put a video up!

    As someone who has had two spinal surgeries in the past four years - first was the microdiscectomy/laminectomy of L5/S1 followed by a fusion of L5/S1, my advice is to look at exercises that do not load your back and spine. Squats, deadlifts, hack squats....anything that is loading up your back is no bueno and will likely lead to additional fusions and problems. It sucks, I get it and I know, but that is the reality for the majority of folks that have these sort of problems. Do you like swimming? If not, you likely will soon

    • @WhoIsJonHarris
      @WhoIsJonHarris  7 месяцев назад

      So I’ve purposely bought a chest supported row machine. Preacher curl machine. Chest press machine. And a leg press machine for that very reason. How’d your laminectomy go for the L5/S1? Did it not go well and the. You had to do the fusion? How did your recovery go? What does lifting look like for you now?

      @@WhoIsJonHarris First surgery went well and I was good for about a year and a half. But the remainder of the disc herniated and pushed against the nerve root. Worst sciatica pain I've ever felt. I was miserable. Since the fusion, things have been great. No pain at all now, but I do have some nerve issues that are more annoying that anything. Right half of my right foot is still numb 4 months out of surgery. All lifting is very deliberate and not heavy. Lots of core work, but no twisting or weight swinging. No running....lots of walking.

    • @WhoIsJonHarris
      @WhoIsJonHarris  7 месяцев назад

      @@ryancollins9960 great to know. I’ve heard all kinds of stories that vary from these types of injuries/surgeries. The shift to hypertrophy based lifting wouldn’t be bad. But stepping away from “maximal strength” training would be a bit of an identity crisis potentially. It’s something to consider though. Thanks for telling me about your experience. It definitely helps to hear others perspectives.

      Just something else to persevere through. But I am genuinely excited about the new home gym setup. So there’s some sort of bright side.

    Which leg extension is that?
    L5S1 herniated disc, I did surgery but what has kept me in the gym is the reverse hyper machine in my home gym.

    • @WhoIsJonHarris
      @WhoIsJonHarris  7 месяцев назад

      This is the Spart leg extension. But I don’t think I’d recommend it. It has a pretty glaring design flaw. BUT!! I just picked up a new one yesterday that I need to assemble. I’ve yet to find a beefier build AND the leg roller design is far superior. So stay tuned.
      I have a few GHD’s at my gym that I’ve thought about using. Or getting a back extension station. I feel like the reverse hyper just takes up so much room. And eventually just become tables. How often do you use it now? How long since your surgery?

    • @conrad2nr
      @conrad2nr 7 месяцев назад

      @@WhoIsJonHarris I’m 10 years out from surgery but have had flare ups since then. Since I’ve used the (Titan) Reverse Hyper consistently I haven’t had any flare ups.
      I do them every leg day, 2-3 times a week. If I were to do my home gym again the reverse hyper would be the first thing after the basics. I’d imagine using the GHD to do body weight reverse hypers would give similar benefits except for progressive overloading.
      Is the replacement leg extension/curl from Titan? I ordered one this morning.

    • @WhoIsJonHarris
      @WhoIsJonHarris  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@conrad2nr roger that. I’ll use the GHD for a bit and then might pull the trigger on the reverse hyper. The titan might be slightly better because of the pivoting leg roller. But the design is still sub-par because it only attaches in one spot. Look up the “Extreme Training Equipment - plate loaded leg extension”. They use a two point shackle and pin to mount the leg roller. The steel is beefier. It’s the most overbuilt plate loaded leg extension I’ve ever seen. When I have this one next to the spart, or I imagine any of the other knock offs, It’s at least double in weight. If you find me on Instagram, I can send you some videos. It is a massive improvement. It’s going to be a little more expensive but not much. Shipping is what will kill you. I picked mine up in North Carolina. on our way home from vacation. Saved almost $300.
