Just like Josephine Baker, crossroads of struggles for black freedom brought Eunice "Nina Simone" Barber into exile here in France. She died in the south of France almost 2 decades ago. I still agonize over the destiny of our black heroes bridging 2 hostile continents crippled into racism against them, while their art genius and might shine over the world. RiP Nina, we deceived you. All of us. I will always cherish your art and legacy.

For my money, this is THE version of this great, great 1967 prison song by Jerry Jeff Walker. It dramatizes every word of Walker's wonderful lyrics, puts you right there in the cell with the other inmates and a born entertainer. First verse shows the man Bojangles, an amazing dancer in rags, but "eyes of age" who not only dances but talks, "speaks right out." Second verse, with its gorgeous strings, joyful dance, its history of Bojangles dancing career and the death of his companion dog is sublime. It stops, and for second you think the song has ended. But it picks up with a surprise third verse and Bojangles' confession of why he's in jail ("I drinks a bit") and someone respectfully asking Bojangles "please .... Mr. Bojangles ... Dance." The tinkly ending disappoints me, but not that much; Nina's voice is so real and respectful of the humble man who throughout the South was the legendary Bojangles ...

“Mr. Bojangles” by Nina Simone is a poignant and soul-stirring song that weaves together emotions of nostalgia, empathy, and resilience. Let’s delve into its layers and uncover the essence of this timeless piece.
    Emotions:
Nostalgia: The song evokes a sense of longing for the past as if reminiscing about a bygone era. The narrator’s encounter with Mr. Bojangles becomes a bittersweet memory, and Simone’s delivery captures this sentiment beautifully.
    Empathy:
Through her expressive vocals, Simone channels empathy for Mr. Bojangles, a downtrodden figure. His vulnerability and struggle resonate with the listener, inviting compassion.
    Resilience:
Despite life’s hardships, there’s an underlying resilience in Mr. Bojangles. His ability to dance and find solace in music becomes a symbol of endurance and hope.
    Analysis:
Narrative: The song recounts an encounter between the narrator and Mr. Bojangles, a street performer. Their interaction unfolds in a jail cell, where Mr. Bojangles shares his life story.
Characterization: Mr. Bojangles is portrayed as a complex character-a drifter, a dancer, and a survivor. His dance becomes a form of expression, a way to cope with adversity.
    Symbolism:
The dance itself symbolizes freedom, escape, and the human spirit’s resilience. It’s a moment of transcendence amidst hardship.
    Social Commentary:
Simone subtly comments on societal neglect and the plight of marginalized individuals. Mr. Bojangles represents those often overlooked by society.
    Meaning:
Freedom Through Art: Mr. Bojangles finds liberation through dance, even within the confines of a jail cell. His tapping feet become a metaphor for the human need to express oneself, regardless of circumstances.
    Shared Humanity:
The song underscores our shared humanity. Despite differences in background, we all carry stories of struggle and survival. Mr. Bojangles becomes a universal figure-a reminder of our interconnectedness.
    Legacy:
By immortalizing Mr. Bojangles in song, Nina Simone ensures that his story lives on. She transforms his pain into art, preserving his memory and inviting us to reflect on our own journeys.
In summary, “Mr. Bojangles” transcends time and genre, touching hearts with its raw emotion and timeless message. Nina Simone’s rendition infuses it with soul, making it a treasure for generations to come.

I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you
    In worn out shoes
Silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants
    The old soft shoe
    He jumped so high
    He jumped so high
    Then he'd lightly touched down
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Dance
I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was
    Down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
    As he spoke right out
    He talked of life
    He talked of life
He lightly slapped his leg instead
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Dance
He said the name Bojangles and he danced a lick
    Across the cell
He grabbed his pants for a better stance
    He jumped so high
    He clicked his heels
    He let go a laugh
    He let go a laugh
Stood up and shook back his clothes all around
We danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs
    Throughout the south
He spoke of tears of fifteen years
    How his dog and him
    They travelled about
    His dog up and died
    He up and died
After twenty years he still grieves
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Dance
He said I dance now at every chance at honky tonks
    For drinks and tips
But most of the time I spend behind these county bars
    'Cause I drinks a bit
He shook his head, and as he shook his head
I heard someone respectfully ask, Please
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Mr Bojangles
    Dance

Sammy Davis did it resplendently, masterfully orchestrating undulating waves of emotions. The best version indeed.

like listening to a thousand dreams that have been deferred all whispered in your ear, all at once.
I have never been able to listen to Nina sing it with out crying and tonight I had to stop listening.
Too much far too much. One of the truly saddest songs I have ever heard. I would liken it to the book 'Of Mice and Men'
Its America in verse and rhyme

Absolutely. Goodnight my friend. Cherished. Beloved. Now gone. Gave his nerves to SOCA, for us all to keep safe. This was his favourite song. Goodnight Markey: my best friend X
