When I a German student of 25 years of age went to London, I saw Nina' show in the Playboy club, loved her songs and bought her album, and I still have it. It has been with me for all those years of my life ñiving in so many many countries. Good memories.
3 years after, do you still feel the same way and also what do you think about the new age of African and African American artists in contrast to old jazz artists like NIna and perhaps Billie Holiday ? I'm sincerly curious for a different opinion. Thank you ! 😊😊!
On a whim, I watched the documentary, "What Happened, Ms. Simone". From the very moment I saw her,...the emotive facial expressions and her proud, defiant posture, I said WOW! Then she started playing the piano and I "heard" her sing, and I said Woooooaaaaah! There are vocalists who have great voices and are good singers. There are vocalists have barely average voices, as an instrument, but are great singers (Durante and Brennan) because of the story they can create. In Nina Simone you have someone who has a great voice, is a great singer and, btw, is a classical pianist. She is mesmerizing and so is this album.
she's an unconventional trying at classical but its very much her own interpretation of it---i think defiantly so ( she was rejected from prestigious musical schools.) If you knew her story and heard her speak in interviews, it's clear to see that she had a strong sense of who she was, where he came, and what she went through to get where she got. it comes through her piano and vocal work and its deep in her voice when she's interviewed about her life. All of her bleeds through her and that's the rawest one can get....
I watched it last night and had a similar reaction to her entering the stage at the beginning of the doc. I said to myself, "do not mess with Miss Simone"! What an extraordinary life.
@@theskeptic8489 I don't think this is an accurate take. She studied classical piano from childhood and studied at Julliard before dropping out due to lack of funds. She tried to get into another music school in a city where she had family and was rejected, according to her, due to race. She then transitioned away from classical music fully and performed jazz, folk, and other genres. It's more accurate to say her classical training bled through into the other styles of music she performed than that she was an outsider "trying at classical."
@@michellejames2447 I agree with you. According to the documentary and in her own words, you are correct. Classical was her first love. She even commented when she finally got to Carnagie Hall that it was supposed to have been as a classical pianist. She began playing other genre's and singing because she had to earn a living.

the way she shows her entire heart is STUNNING listening to Ne Me Quitte Pas...she clearly has an American accent singing it, but don't let it fool you - she knows EXACTLY what EACH and every word means and she's singing it with her full heart. Don't make the mistake of thinking she doesn't know what she's saying - she means EVERY word. Her heart is immense, grand and she lays it out on the table with such ease for everyone to see. Nina Simone is and will always be the queen of all queens!!! I can not even start to comprehend this woman"s soul!!!!! My mom's name is Nina and I just had to name my daughter after her because i could tell my girl had a soul made for greater things just like these two amazing women right here !!
I see people commenting on the first song, but this is the whole album. Listen to the whole thing! You'll be glad you did and it will be one of your go to's. I guarantee it!
The things that I really enjoy about classics is the beauty of being able to hear and feel the flow of real instruments used to make these different arrangements. Thank you, God, for the era that I was born in to have a chance to really hear great music.

"You've Got To Learn"
You've got to learn to show a happy face
Although you're full of misery
You mustn't show a trace of sadness
Never look for sympathy
You've got to learn although it's very hard
The way of pocketing your pride
Sometimes face humiliation
While you were burning up inside
Facing reality is often hard to do
When it seems happiness is gone
You've got to learn to hide your tears
And tell your heart life must go on
You've got to learn to leave the table
When love's no longer being served
To show everybody that you're able
To leave without saying a word
You've got to learn to hide your sorrow
And go on living as before
What good is thinking of tomorrow
Who knows what it may have in store
You've got to learn to be much stronger
At times your head must rule your heart
You've got to learn from hard experience
And listen to advice
And sometimes pay the price
And learn to live with a broken heart

Espetacular!!!... Só tem clássico nesse álbum
You've got to learn to show a happy face
Although you're full of misery
You mustn't show a trace of sadness
Never look for sympathy
You've got to learn although it's very hard
The way of pocketing your pride
Sometimes face humiliation
While you were burning up inside
Facing reality is often hard to do
When it seems happiness is gone
You've got to learn to hide your tears
And tell your heart life must go on
You've got to learn to leave the table
When love's no longer being served
To show everybody that you're able
To leave without saying a word
You've got to learn to hide your sorrow
And go on living as before
What good is thinking of tomorrow
Who knows what it may have in store
You've got to learn to be much stronger
At times your head must rule your heart
You've got to learn from hard experience
And listen to advice
And sometimes pay the price
And learn to live with a broken heart
Written by Charles Aznavour
