  • HARDtalk at 20: In 1999 Tim Sebastian sat down with the singer and activist Nina Simone. With her vocal performances and civil rights activism, she built a fearsome reputation as someone not to be messed with. She worked with Martin Luther King and once even shot at someone who threatened to cheat her in a business deal.

People really wanted her to be the “Angry black woman”... like people have to understand what anger is. People often mistake passion for anger. She was handling herself so well, it really showed the interviewer’s ignorance.

Not really, Nina Simone was not about that. She was simply about knowing black history and our strength. We have no choice, we have to be great because we have been chosen. Don't label her with senseless words. Open your eyes and walk with pride. Nina Simone left you and me with a treasure of proud to be black womanhood that no one can steal. Don't minimize it. Forget age. She is timeless. I guess it was her honesty that men can't handle. Yvette M.

Michael Kylow - what you've said about "how people are so fake nowadays", that isn't anything different, or new.
The root problem of that stems from white supremacy that has poisoned the minds of the masses by altering reality through false education, and entertainment for centuries/decades.
People are too wilfully blind, mindless, and oblivious to wake up. So, they continue the cycle over, and over again.

    • @teamcrumb

the difference between her and the people you feel are fake is she didn't care if people liked her or not. and she wanted folk to know when she felt like shit because the endless river of racists exhausted her constantly. people who say she was bi polar seem to be missing just what she had to put up with. i think the folk you class as fake are just scared and herded along with what the media tells them constantly they should be, which is happy, upright, fully functional. human beings need to reclaim their vulnerabilities and wear them, shout them out.

Yes, she was a legendary artist, but she also suffered from legit mental illness. She attempted murder. From Nina Simone’s Wikipedia bio:
“Simone was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 1980s.[80] She was known for her temper and outbursts of aggression.[81] In 1985, Simone fired a gun at a record company executive, whom she accused of stealing royalties. Simone said she "tried to kill him" but "missed".[82] In 1995 while living in France, she shot and wounded her neighbor's son with an air gun after the boy's laughter disturbed her concentration and she perceived his response to her complaints as racial insults;[83][84] she was sentenced to eight months in jail, which was suspended pending a psychiatric evaluation and treatment.[20]
According to a biographer, Simone took medication from the mid-1960s onward, although this was supposedly only known to a small group of intimates.[85] After her death the medication was confirmed as the anti-psychotic Trilafon, which Simone's friends and caretakers sometimes surreptitiously mixed into her food when she refused to follow her treatment plan.[20] This fact was kept out of public view until 2004 when a biography, Break Down and Let It All Out, written by Sylvia Hampton and David Nathan (of her UK fan club), was published posthumously.[86] Singer-songwriter Janis Ian, a one-time friend of Simone's, related in her own autobiography, Society's Child: My Autobiography, two instances to illustrate Simone's volatility: one incident in which she forced a shoe store cashier at gunpoint to take back a pair of sandals she'd already worn; and another in which Simone demanded a royalty payment from Ian herself as an exchange for having recorded one of Ian's songs, and then ripped a pay telephone out of its wall when she was refused.[87]”

You’re celebrating that she tried to kill someone, as if that’s something to admire???

I don't mean to be rude.
But you are confusing 'to' and 'too' in your phrase
      Too means "very" or "much".
To is the short version of "towards" or means in relation TO something, addressing something.
Or before verbs "to be, to have, to see"
A letter TO you. Attention to life.
This is too good to be true (she is very good).
Too can also mean 'also' or 'as well'
      - I feel good today. How about you?
-Me too, thank you too =(also< as well)
No offense just trying to clarify because it was hard to understand what you meant

Michael Kylow: It's not a white people thing to be this way. It's a "people with power" thing and the most powerful nations often acted the worst for this precise reason. Your generalization shows ignorance and a lack of thinking the same way a good old simplistic racist cliché about minorities shows the same.

@Redღ The vices Michael was talking about exist among every races and social classes.
In a world with one race having most of the demographic, political and financial powers these vices added to their bigger impact will obviously make it more dangerous than the same thing present among other less powerful races.
The rich among this race having more power will be the most threatening of this race obviously, still for the power factor.
