  • A melon-y new release from Balcones intrigues Rex & Daniel as they discuss recommendations, subtitles, and the dilemma of reviewing a friend's bottle objectively.
Thanks to Kimberly Burke for the bottle. Cheers ya MB!

So glad you reviewed this! Lineage showed up for the first time this month in my local liquor store. One thing you didn't mention: at least up here in Oklahoma, it's just over half the price of the Balcones Texas Single Malt (which I love and a bottle of which is in my cabinet). I haven't yet tried the Lineage, but at its very reasonable price-point, I definitely will. If it's anywhere near as good as you suggest, it's a steal especially for an American craft malt. fwiw, both the Balcones Pot Still Bourbon, which you mentioned in this review, and the Balcones Rye, which is bottled at a more typically high for Balcones ABV, go for around the price of the Lineage, whereas the Rumble and Brimstone, which we also regularly get up here, are priced more like the Texas Single Malt. Not sure what they sell the Baby Blue (the last of the regularly available Balconeses in my neck of the woods) for.

Thanks guys for the laughs and advice/input/commentary on whisk(e)y. I got into the world of “strong spirits” about 4 years ago with some good friends, but it was more to the extent of taking shots of budget whisk(e)y like Knob Creek or Monkey Shoulder. Your channel really opened up the world of whisk(e)y for me and helped me find a more enjoyable experience. I just purchased and tasted my first bottle of Laphroig 10 and to my surprise, actually enjoyed it very much! So thanks again and cheers to you!

      Lol 👍🏻
Daniel & Rex did a whisky noob tastes a countdown of whiskies a while back, and the noob described Laphroaig 10 as burning trash on the beach.
Laphroaig 10 was my first smoky Scotch, and probably shouId’nt have been. I have changed my perspective on it from burning cow manure + Chloroseptic throat spray to more interesting than the competing Islay peaters. As your palate expands I would suggest you find a really well-stocked bar, and try Laphroaig Lore. I went by Daniel’s recommendation, and immediately bought a bottle. One of the best recommendations ever! I found it at an Austin Specs for just over $80 before the Trump 25% tariff price increase had found its way through through the supply pipeline to the shelf. Now Specs is showing it at $111-$119. I’d buy again for $100.

I got the Balcones Gift box. It came with lineage, the bourbon, 1 other and the glen cairn glass. I don't understand what I don't like about it. It has a medicinal or dark cherry cough drop. I can't place the taste, but I don't like it. Has it gone bad or am I just not a big fan of the whole Balcones line. I tasted it to some extent in all 3. It is also like oily or waxy.

  • @ivanthetolerable

Daniel, you should have mentioned the price: Spec’s lists it at ~$34
And its widely available, so there won’t be hoarding shenanigans like with Mirador.
Edit: Just scored a bottle. I can taste a hint of honeydew, but i think that leads a Crème brûlée note that doesn’t devolve into caramel + vanilla which suggests that the new oak barrel contribution was not allowed to dominate. I like Mirador a little better, but this one is ~$34!

I’m adding to my whiskey collection and have read that some suggest using a wine preserver (gas mixture of CO2, Nitrogen, etc.) in the bottles once opened to maintain freshness. I have a very small collection so far. But when I look at your collection it’s massive. It’s this something you do or would recommend doing? Does this need to be done if you drink a bottle in a timely manner?

I'd say Lineage is my favorite Balcones, but it's the only Balcones I've had - but incredibly distinctive, and really good, especially for the price. The next closest I've had is the (quasi)local Del Bac mesquite, even though I tend toward the cheaper (but even more local) SanTan malt.

9:58 Some may disagree but I like using Cardhu and a intro to scotch, and have done so very successfully. It is about $75-80 Canadian pesos where I am, so you could also add something in the $40 range to compare and keep it under $120. That's a good evening right there!

I got a bottle of Balcones lineage months ago. I have been in Houston for about 10 years and will leave US soon. Feel weird if I leave without trying one of Balcones. It doesn't let me down, a great experience of super fruit punch I haven't experienced (although it 's not difficult to find something I haven't experienced because I enter the whiskey field this year, and yes, after watching so many vault videos). I would love to know what other Texas distilleries people would suggest. By the way, I usually drink Pearse Lyons reserve or Monkey shoulder recently, so I am mostly in the friendly or background whiskey territories.

    Johnnie Walker guy:
is this to be a Scotch only?
There are American single malts both worthy, and not overpowering in any particular direction.
You could get this Texas single malt cheap ~$34 if it is distributed or is orderable where you are. Balcones offers a Single Malt called Mirador, matured in second fill bourbon casks only, but its now twice the price of their Lineage Single Malt. Balcones offers a peated version of its original, new oak matured Texas Single Malt, for about the same price as Mirador. These all would leave you enough for a second bottle.
How about subtle smokiness with abundant complex flavor? Westland Peated American Single Malt would impress with a balance of light smokiness, espresso, bittersweet chocolate, and tiny hints of vanilla and Crème brûlée, yet will leave your budget open to the possibility of a second bottle.

There's a strong clove/cinnamon/woody note that was challenging to get past, and I found it too present to be able to dig into the more subtle nuances lurking underneath.
