I was lucky to grow up in Nanaimo, then spent 20+ years in Japan and then recently moved back to Nanaimo all these years later. You really make my family and I feel lucky to live here. Not a lot of places in this world offer this kind of beauty. And you share it well. Thank you.
Cheers, Kelly! Just don't tell anyone else ;-) If you haven't visited it yet go check out Ammonite Falls, not far from Nanaimo. Bowen Park is a great spot as well for a quick photo fix.
I appreciate the effort you put into exploration, photography, and sharing of you’re knowledge in nature and not being technical . My background of retouching photographs in darkrooms of 1980, the digital boom photoshop 1991, into today’s filter selections the results have only become incredible. I also enjoy exploring and finding intriguing photographs that’s what makes you unique. Thanks!
Keep doing what you are doing. I really like the little stories about the locations and your photos are superb. The image first approach is what sets you apart.
A thousand years plus, it’s a phenomenal thought, it's also a truly amazing feat of nature. I really enjoy that your channel isn’t about shutter speeds, apertures and other settings but about your composition and how you are trying achieve. And I definitely enjoy the insight into the amazing things you see.
Great! thanks, Mark! Oh for sure the Cheewhat giant is just fantastic to visit and very much understated by my fellow Canadians. We spend so much time trying to get away to other countries that here at least many forget how fantastic Canada really is, it's a real shame. Although it does keep the crowd's down and unwanted visitation.
Adam Gibbs the only place I regret not visiting prior to being banned from flying is Canada. I didn’t watch hardly any RUclips before my lungs went and now I think it must be the ultimate country for landscape and wildlife.
Hi Adam, Ive recently discovered your channel and as I am planning a trip from the UK to VC island next year to visit my son I am finding your videos very useful ! We will definitely be visiting and photographing many of the locations you have shown, VC Island is an amazing place, you are indeed very fortunate to live there. Absolutely love your work ! cant wait to follow your footsteps. PS as one crusty old photographer to another, buy yourself a right angle view finder !! PPs its not 4 by 5, its 5x4 !! Let me know if you need more tea bags bringing.
I'm catching up with your videos, great locations. I bet you're glad you left Britain for Canada when you were younger. I'm off to explore a forest in Suffolk, not as grand as Canada but i love exploring wherever I am
Loving you're vlogs Adam . They are far calmer than when you are out with Gavin . Even though you wo crack me up no end . Just ordered a second hand with low mileage Canon 5d mk3 to just up the quality of my photos . Ps visited BC Around 1983 for 5 weeks with my best mate . Hotel first n last night . Slept in the hire car for most of the time. Took loads of pics . They are lost now . I ended up getting divorced . Been with my partner Samantha for nearly four years . We are planning a trip To BC in a couple of years . Who knows our paths may cross . Once again thank you for some super vlogs . Martin .
Thanks for awesome content and for showing Canada. It is really nice to follow your photographical journey and see what Canada's awesome nature has to offer. Looking forward to your future videos keep up the good work it is very enjoyable.
I appreciate this video and the effort you took to make it. I have always struggled to capture the true scale of large trees. This gave me some ideas. Thank you!
Adam you hit another home run with this video. The quiet and lush forest and your photography bring tears to my old eyes. Please keep it up, enjoy your work very much.
I think you did a wonderful job of showing the majestic nature of the tree without the need to show the whole tree (even if that had been possible). Your comments about the feeling you experienced in those areas certainly shows in your photos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! I did try to get the drone all of the ways up to the top of the tree to get an image looking down but there were just too many branches in the way. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video, thanks again.
Your photographs are so powerful. I am amazed at your images. I like that your vlogs are not about the technical stuff but about the images themselves. Keep doing what you are doing. I also love your little comments that sometimes have me in stitches. Well done Adam you are one of my favourite photographers.
Highly inspired by your vlogs...you vlogs are soulful, have rich substance! Your sense of scale and composition is just fantastic! Keep inspiring,,,currently running through your channel ...maybe you will eventually inspire me to quit the day job and take the plunge of faith!
Adam, love the travels around Vancouver Island. I am hoping to get back up there in the next few years. Have explored the south coast a little but you are showing so much more. Please continue, I find your video's to be great. I live only about 5 hours south and there are days I would like to hop in the car and go.
Adam, thanks so much for sharing your craft the way you do! I've only recently discovered your work and I'm very glad I did! I signed up for the Out of Oregon conference this coming October and saw that Gavin Hardcastle is one of the instructors, so I started watching his channel which helped me find yours. I love your compositions and your discussion on light and subject matter. I agree that you are very fortunate to live in beautiful British Columbia! I actually got my start in photography about 10 years ago when I was a grad student in BC--couldn't help but fall in love with the place! Unfortunately, living the poor student life, I never made it out to the island. That's definitely something I've gotta remedy at some point and you can bet that when I do I'll be scouring your channel for inspiration and ideas of where to go. Like you, I have a particular fondness for soft light and calm forest scenes. I'm excited to keep catching up on your videos. Thanks again!
Amazing trees. I enjoyed this video very much. I was, at one point, wishing for more tech info but after listening to your end comment I changed my mind. Loved this.
Was running a workshop last weekend and your name came up as a recommended person to follow, and boy am I glad I did ... loved the videos I've watched so far .. looks like an incredible place ...
Thanks, Nigel! Vancouver Island is a great place as it still has a wild side to it that feels raw. It is unfortunate that much of the island has been exploited for its resources but it still has lots of un explored areas to discover with a camera. Thanks for checking my videos out, I'll have to have a gander at your channel. Cheers!
Thank you very much für sharing those wonderful places. I have discovered your channel only a short while ago and I am excited about the episodes left to watch and those in the future. I will hopefully have the chance to visit Canada some day and take photographs in good light. Great use of drone footage and always amazing photographs with such a natural look and feel. Really inspirational work! Kind regards
What a beautiful ancient tree that is and your images (especially the pano) of it are stunning. I know this is an earlier video of yours and that you now include the camera settings on your images but, for me personally, it would be more helpful if you could describe (or mark) your focus point(s) as this makes such a difference to what is captured. I also love your understated tone without the brashness of so many others. Great work Adam. I look forward to checking out more.
Excellent presentation. I actually like that it's not so technical. I enjoy it more that way. Beautiful images. I'll keep following your work as long as it's available. Thanks for sharing.
From what you're showing, British Columbia is so beautiful. I live in the eastern part of Canada and I hope I can go to BC one day for fishing and photography.
Hi Adam, this is another great video...i love your clips!! Awesome landscapes and a phenomenal nature !! Thank you so much to bring us the beauty of this nature in our rooms...;) !! GREAT JOB...!! Greetings from germany..!!
Great stuff. I love watching your videos especially on Vancouver Island. I am planning to visit next summer for a few months and watching this makes me want to fast forward a few months. I really like the way you explain your thoughts on the composition and lighting. really helpful and inspiring.
Just discovered your channel and really enjoyed working through the videos you've made. Love the relaxed style. Also adding to my desire to return to British Columbia and Alberta; we had our first visit there last autumn but not nearly enough time to devote to photography.
Absolutely stunning video Adam. I am truly enjoying every one of your videos but this one has been the best by far. My wife and I just love old growth trees, more so my wife, and she wants to pack up our camping stuff and head over to the island today lol! If you ever decide to head out Vernon way, give me a shout as I know some hidden gems in the area! We even have a spare guest room you could use.
Thanks, Dale! Will do. There are some really great old growth spots to check out. Probably the best site for info is the Ancient Forest Alliance website they have info on some great spots. Carmanah and the Walbran are my favourites. The Cheewhat Giant is well worth the drive and short hike.
nice captures Adam, enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing them. I know the technical side so no big deal there but i really enjoy seeing others photo work and the beauty of nature around them.
@@QuietLightPhoto Ive worked at Cathedral grove a few times...but Im mostly in and around the south Island mate. I did just give you a mention in a video I uploaded a few minutes ago....hope thats ok: ruclips.net/video/zSaCi5siyWA/видео.html
I really like the mood of your videos very calm and the experience of a landscape is in the foreground. I love my equipment but love more the adventure outside. Was in Canada two years ago, also on Vancouver Island. We visited the Rainforest Trail and Cathedral Grove, amazing places. Greetings from Austria Jürgen
Jürgen Weginger thanks, Jurgen! We're lucky to have some old growth forests left to visit. Cathedral grove is a great Intro to ancient forests on the island. Thanks again, much appreciated.
I love these images! Using the drone to show the tree height works well. I like your videos precisely because they aren't technical. I just want to see the places you go and things you see. Keep up the great work. I would like to own one of your photos some day.
Thanks so much James! Yeah, I'm not terribly eloquent when it comes to explaining the technical side of photography. Although I might put together the odd gear video. Apart from that, there is so much already out there that does a good job of it. I agree I'm much more interested in the places that there are to photograph.
I discovered your channel a few days ago. I've watched a few hours worth of videos. Great work! It's great to live vicariously through these videos. I have a D800 with a D850 on the way, but I live in Mississippi and have to drive to north Alabama to even get close to wilderness like this.
You truly have a unique way of filming and presenting a vlog that I really enjoy! I must ask if you ever had an encounter with bears? As you say, Canada is such a huge place, and there must be millions of bears.
Thanks again, Adam! Ah yes, bears. British Columbia and especially Vancouver Island have a lot of bear and cougar. 99% of the time a bear will just run away. There have been a number of attacks over the years by both grizzlies and black bear but to be honest you have more chance of getting mugged by a person than getting mauled by a bear. I've come across bear lots of times and most of them either run away or carry on doing bear stuff (looking for food) Occasionally a bear will be curious and start walking towards you, in those cases, I just slowly walk away. If I'm hiking in bear country I'll often make a bit of noise to let them know I'm coming. Fresh bear poo is a good indicator, especially if it's fresh, seriously! haha. Cougar, on the other hand, are something to worried about as they sneak up on you. I've seen a cougar once but am sure I've been seen by more than one cougar.
Adam, this video was a great reminder of how accessible the wilds are to us here in Canada. Thanks for your efforts. I am curious about the drone you use, and how difficult it is to thread it through the forests to obtain many of your shorts. Are there any lessons concerning its selection and use that you would deem worthy of share?
Thanks so much Richard! The Mavic Pro has become an excellent tool for this type of video work. I'm still somewhat a beginner pilot but have discovered a few great tips that work well in the forest. The first is don't rush things otherwise you will end up crashing. Tripod mode is excellent for forest work as the drone is slow and smooth. Turn off all of the sensors otherwise, the drone will keep stopping and send out constant warnings. I find that if I can find a relatively straight flight path through the forest I'll use it so that there are no sudden jarring movements in the footage. Try to line yourself up so that you are directly behind or ahead of the drone so that you can see the flight path. Lastly, always keep the drone in the line of sight, not hard to do in the forest. Hope these help.
Once again amazing images and video adam👍🏻 I'm working on a video at the mo at a heavily wooded waterfall, and I found your images to be very inspiring which has helped me get my woodland photography eye in check lol
Great video and excellent shots! Impressive place you have there. One question, how do you synchronize your audio from the Zoom H1 with the video? In LR Premier? Thanks a lot for sharing your experience!
Thanks, Andres! I use Final Cut Pro. Not sure if I'm doing it right but I just drag the audio clip down to the video clip and match the existing audio to what in the in the video. Occasionally it's difficult to do because the ambient sound is louder than my voice, but overall that method works for me. I'm sure there is probably an easier way. The hardest part is remembering to turn the H1 on and off.
I have, a couple of times. It is beautiful in there. I am hoping to drive in again in the new year. Very hard to photograph though, but I love it in there. Cheers!
Thanks for a reply, glad you have been, the last 2 years a lot of work has been done on the trails, a new trail heads down to the "marble canyon" . Trails have also been flagged and cleaned up towards Anderson Lake, would love to see your photo/video of the Walbran.
Hello Adam, I’m sorry for asking this trivial question, but in this video, I can see that you have an orange flashlight looking thing on your backpack shoulder strap. Is that a bear banger?
Good morning: it's great to watch Canadian photographers work in Canada as many leave for other parts of the world. We have lived in BC for 17 years and certainly know the potential work there as a photographer/vlogger. Your work is inspiring me to photograph Manitoba. Without all the spectacular natural beauty of BC, photographing Manitoba is a lot of hard work. If you follow me on FB (Wayne Robert Crofford) maybe you can give me some pointers? Thanks for your careful, small footprint.
Thanks, Wayne! I haven't spent an awful lot of time in Manitoba but I do seem to remember The Sleeping Giant? that must have some wonderful potential? assuming you live not far from there, haha. You're right though in we do have lots of great photographic potential. Thanks, again!

That's what I like, a well-rounded video, lol. cheers, Gregory!
Another great vlog. Did you apply the orton effect in post? The images all have a very surreal look to them. Well done.
Thanks, again! Some images I use a bit of Gaussian blur to add a bit of a dreamy effect.
The technical stuf is not importent, showing the locations in your video’s are! Keep up the good work.i love it. Paul
Thanks, Paul! good to hear.
Jeez, did you accidentally put on insect attractant? Nice images as always.
Have you been to the Walbran side of the park?
I have, a couple of times. It is beautiful in there. I am hoping to drive in again in the new year. Very hard to photograph though, but I love it in there. Cheers!
Thanks for a reply, glad you have been, the last 2 years a lot of work has been done on the trails, a new trail heads down to the "marble canyon" . Trails have also been flagged and cleaned up towards Anderson Lake, would love to see your photo/video of the Walbran.
I'm afraid I would forget to take the picture, I would just be gobsmacked.
Hello Adam, I’m sorry for asking this trivial question, but in this video, I can see that you have an orange flashlight looking thing on your backpack shoulder strap. Is that a bear banger?
yes
