Gosh I just love watching Phil Brown running in the 4 x 400 he can run so much faster with a baton in his hand than when he is running for himself. Peace and love to you Phil you will always be our relay main man
Phil Brown - all time Great Brummie! He gave out prize giving awards at my school a few weeks later (I was 11). We got to see his medal from this race :-)
I'm almost lost for words. Phil Brown is a great Brummie. I watched this on tv in Cardiff when I was a kid and I always loved this team. I live in Phil's old patch now in Handsworth Wood. I so wish young men in Birmingham could watch Phil's races and take some inspiration instead of the downward path. He's a legend. WT
Phil Brown, one of (many) athletics heroes when I was a kid - I was at Crystal Palace for this and many other great athletic events at the Palace in the late 70's and early 80's. Different world back then.
It was actually Ainsley Bennet who ran the first leg and not Kriss Akabusi. The same team also won Bronze at The World Championships that same year too!
Oh wow! Just seeing this for the first time since it originally took place. Phil Brown was the silkiest, smoothest athlete we ever had. Even better than Seb Coe! I remember being blown away by the sheer beauty of Alyson Felix's form in her first couple of years at 200m. I'd liken Brown's style here to hers. He had so much power and he always delivered in the relays. It's such a shame he was never able to translate that form into his individual performances. He was always awesome to watch when he ran like this.
Stunner of the race - must have watched this when i was teenager! I just met up with Phil Borwn at the Staffordshire Olympic Conference on Thursday, Wow look at him run - what a team. Hope our boys and girls can do it in 2012!!
great win [ great days, what a shame phil coudnt transfer it to individual races [ people also forget how good gary cook was [ i,d rather see these great guys millionaires than premiership footballers [ r i p todd benett[ sorry i hadnt realised je had passed
Hey Kevin, do u have any of the women's sprints from this meet, I would be very curious to see what Renate Stecher looked like in 73, and would love to see the 100 and 200 meters for women if u have them ! Thanks again for all your amazing posts, they r real treasures !
This was a big event for England and I think the first time it was held here (because of the world championships I don't think there was a world cup that year, hence probably Britain was awarded the European final even though Crystal Palace wasn't really up to it....I'm sure wiki has a complete list of all venus for the event.
I could watch 400m relay races all day!

I was at this meeting and this is the first time I've seen it since.Thanks.
🥇 Phil Brown relaxes at speed and tucks in like a middle distance runner - quite amazing relay runner 🏃

It really was an amazingly innocent time to grow up around sport
I saw it on TV as a 13 yr old. Must have been amazing to see and experience
Magnificent race!! Great to hear all the names again - Cook, Bennet, Brown, Knebel, Markin, Weber...memories.
He couldn't quite do it in the individual 400 but what a fantastic 4x400 relay runner Phil Brown was.
Watched this race so many times as a 12 year old. Akabusi, Cook, Bennett (RIP) and Brown. Much greater than the some of their parts.
It was actually Ainsley Bennet who ran the first leg and not Kriss Akabusi. The same team also won Bronze at The World Championships that same year too!
That's Akabusi on the first leg.
...Phil Brown, the greatest anchor runner ever...
If only he could get the same kind of inspiration, in the individuals...What could have been...
If phil Brown could have run Individual 400m with a baton in his hand he would have won Olympic and world medals off his own bat
You could see in Brown's face from 3:00 that he'd decided no-one was going to get to that line before him.

Alyson Felix yes, but can't say I remember Coe or Brown being "silky smooth", that description fits Ovett better..just loved his running style
No-one had a running style more efficient than Seb Coe. He was poetry in motion!!!

Those were such great meets for us kids to watch -
Phil Brown was supreme in the relays.
He certainly was. One of Britain's finest every anchor relay runners in the 4x400.
Great memories. Thanks for posting.

They should test all the frozen samples from the past! Testing is way more advanced now! There be a hell of a lot of gold medals handed back!
Rip todd. Never forgotten. And no David Jenkins!

Can tell you what she looked like ... like she was pumped full of 'special stuff' that East German sport specialised in so well.
A nations of cheats !
Strange that the European athletics cup was held so late in the T&F season; normally it is/was at the beginning.
athlete, do you hv any 400m individual men in the european championship?..would love to see skamrahl, weber, markin, schoenlebe etc
How many times has the European Cup Athletics competition has been held in Great Britain throughout its history?

1973, 1983, 1994, 2000, 2013
I’ve heard Coleman commentate on a lot of these races which were great but someone should really have told him how long a metre is 🤣
Hi there, i dont have the womens sprints from this meet, sorry :-(
In the days before the country got fucked right up. Great place to be.
The same team that got silver the year after in los Angeles!!!!!
That's right and they were absolutely brilliant in that race too.
Chris made up for this poor leg in 1991
Weber
soviet lost just because they had a terrible bad change in the last leg.....
