      Hey guys. So being open is great and there's definite improvement from the movie but there's some obvious issues that alot of people are rating it 6\10. Keeping only with what has been shown, the opening scene was great. The Earth bending felt heavy with some obvious limitations that required the fighting style as it's base. Then they drop the ball with the exposition and in world logic. The awkward staging when using a green screen was noticeable and awkward. The earth bender was strong enough to stand on his own feet without his hand and feet bound but didn't immediately attack Sozin or the guards? The instant incineration of fire without the comet is powerful enough to kill anyone instantly. Why would Sozin even want the spy in the throne room if it was part of his plan to misdirect the Earth king's forces. The logic falls apart. The opening without Katara and the obvious CGI avatars is a downgrade from using their LIVE action actors to show the bending. Hint at Azula with the opening firebender being her. Then The drop the ball again by showing us Aang flying twice, once from the building and again trying to summon Appa with the whistle. This is an issue because when his glider gets hit and he "falls" he should have been able to glide the same way he did from the building in the first moments we see him. We also gave Katara longer range to pull water from the ocean all the way up to Appa? Same with Zuko, his fire ball is strong enough to reach that distance to blast a hole in the glider but wasn't strong enough to instantly kill Sokka. Another inconsistency new viewers instantly recognize as hard to grasp the power of everyone's bending. Then there's dialog, performance and again staging like they're in a play instead of outside in the field. They're not behaving like the world is lived in and their clothes look like it's fresh out the box of a cosplay instead of their outfit. Zuko definitely carrying it despite the awkward writing and they have Iroh not as endearing as he is in the show. Iroh constantly tries to redirect Zuko's rage with wisdom and subtle comedic timing. Here's he's an awkward running joke about tea and food that offers no insight or wisdom. That's just episode 1. Katara herself was stripped of her "motherly" attitude. Her strength and weakness is how deeply she feels about things. She's the one cooking and cleaning because that the "woman's job" according to Sokka. In the show she a timid mouse who is lost without Sokka. They inadvertently made the show more misogynistic by taking out Sokka's misogyny and lessons he learns from Suki, Katara, Toph and Yue. Now, Great change by having Suki not know how to flirt and think "this is how guys like to flirt, right?" Great change again, kicking Suki down to make Sokka see less sexist. Now he's sarcastic for sure but he's basically has the better parts of Katara and Aang. They also don't really feel like a group of friends bonding. The animated show and the live action has a difference of about 10 mins (25min episodes x 20 >55min x 8episodes) They literally could have done a shot by shot remake and that maybe would have been better. From the Kiyoshi Warriors instantly showing up and capturing Aang and the rest but no one on patrol when the Zhao ship arrive. They literally have enough time to land get off the ship and march to the town by the time the first bell rings? Also, they took away Suki training Sokka with the other warriors "to save his ego." That's misogynistic writing. They didn't have him dress up, avoiding "straight men in drag" which is also bigoted writing. There's a reason she dresses him up to explain the values of Kiyoshi Warriors and lore. It falls flat when she gives him the fan because you don't know what it represents anymore. The writing is super dumbed down hitting us with exposition instead of showing us. I think the cleverest line was Suki's mother saying "the longer the boy stays the more dangerous he is." Obviously, she's addressing Aang's presence, She's also talking about the presence of love for Suki, and addressing the sexual repercussions that's driving Suki everyone is seeing. This is like a triple meaning that even I was surprised because the rest of dialog was surface level. The animated show is great because it had that level of layers that not many people picked up the first time. Many adults as they grew rewatched the episodes to discover deeper real world truths. This episode doesn't have that. It's heavy handed exposition and unironically more sexist with the changes .

      to be honest: i don't understand why people act as if the show is great somehow, while in reality it is weak af.. the earth bending in episode 1 looked good, but it already stops there.
      the acting and every single conversation looks and feels artificial... it's hard to think of any show with such bad acting and conversations and interactions which felt so unnatural and fake.... also everything that made the animated show great is gone: the humor, which was on point in the animated show, the character building and progression, the warmth between katara, aang and even sokka which drew you right in even in episode 3 of the animated show already - what am i saying, even in EP 1 already
      in the animated show aang gets angry when he finds gyatso and enters the avatar state and katara talks him down by telling him about losing her mum, telling aang that she understands him, tells him she and sokka being his family now, which calms aang and makes him cry in her arms... lots of warmth and bonding between them.. the netflix show has nothing of that.. instead we get more emotionless and fake acting from gyatso who tells aang about being his friend and aang who calms himself down... where is the bonding, warmth and understanding between the main characters of our story..
      and that's just an example which can be applied to every other interaction between the characters. the animated show had more bonding, humor, warmth, character development, believable emotions, motivations and world building in episode 1 than the netflix show has in 1 whole season.. every character feels like an empty shell placed in a scene to read a script.. and yeah, i know that's what actors do, but it still is very bad if the viewers realize that it is what the people are doing on screen...
      the netflix show also fails miserably to convey anything at all the animated show was conveying and "teaching" just as it fails to establish any meaningful emotional bond between the chars which i as viewer can buy into...

      @JrE-il7cf , season 2 has very few filler episodes. So, I think they brought some of the stuffs forward, so that if they will be doing season 2, important aspects can be explored better. The only thing I hate about this adaptation has to do with character butchering of Katara and Bumi. Katara was a complex character (my second favorite) in the animation, but here she is too bland. All the jealousy and hot headedness surrounding her compassionate nature is completely absent. 🤦

    I think opening with the genocide of the air nation achieves two things. First it sets up the show at the start as being more on the darker end. The original was never truly a kids show but this live action isn't going to be pulling punches. More importantly, the people who say they prefer the intrigue and the gradual discovery of that information aren't thinking about the different format of this show. Drip fed information works well over a long 20 episode season but when you have only 8 episodes (even when longer) and they are being released in one go as a single 8 hour story, you don't really have the time for people to sit and process things slowly. Therefore, front loading this information sets the tone of how evil and powerful the fire nation actually is and prepares viewers to be on the edge of their seat. If they drip fed, it would either come too little too late, or worse, it would all come at once later on and you lack that intensity for the first part of the season.

    • @Yuksen2U
      @Yuksen2U 10 месяцев назад

      You do realize that the Netflix adaptation is roughly the same length of time as the first book right?

    • @JackulaHD
      @JackulaHD 10 месяцев назад

      Yes im well aware the overall runtime is similar between the two. However, episode structure and the way they split/pace that time is also an important factor. Despite being roughly the same amount of time being on episode 10 of the original is going to have different pacing than being on episode 4. As ultimately an hour split into three bookended episodes is completely different than a single hour long episode, especially when you factor in time between episodes allowing the shorter original to focus on smaller details more often. Just look at how many things they had to remove or combine to make it fit into the 8 hour structure. In order to drip feed you need the available space to fit it in over time.@@Yuksen2U

      +1, live action format simply requires more time to tell less narrative, but it can add depth. Animation, especially in the narrative style that ATLA had, can get a lot of story across by implying things. Similar to a comic strip with just a few frames, to a lesser extent.

    I don't think that the Southern water tribe pushes the women into traditional roles as much as the North, because remember Gran Gran left the North to go to the South so that she wouldn't be forced to marry. With Hama's episode there were female waterbenders (including herself) fighting. A reference you might enjoy is it's like Sparta 😆 Spartan women had more liberties when it came to owning land and training in combat compared to other Greek women but still not as many liberties as the men.
    I don't think that cutting out that part of Sokka's arc hurt his character growth. You have to ask yourself why was he comparing himself to Suki to begin with? It's because he had insecurities about being a competent warrior and protector, which this show addresses a lot without him having to insult Suki. Instead of him taking out his insecurities on her when she beats him (which happens too often), he confides in her and she reassures him that he is a REAL warrior and supports him. Sounds like a much healthier way to start a relationship! Plus, that arc didn't last very long for him in the animation, and it was never referenced again yet his role as a leader continued to grow and change.

  • @davidnunya8331
    @davidnunya8331 10 месяцев назад +6

    Sokka's story arc has moved from being sexist to having imposter syndrome (even in this episode he says that he is not a "real" warrior). It was probably the root cause of his sexism in the original series anyway. I like this change since it makes his relationship with his sister even better.

    • @Bananies12
      @Bananies12 10 месяцев назад +3

      That's exactly what I commented. His sexist comments towards Suki always came from a place of insecurity (as it often does) about his own abilities and warrior status. Instead of degrading her to make himself feel better, he confided in her and she supported and reassured him of his strength! That's a much healthier couple interaction!

    The kyoshi scene in this ep is a substitute for the same scene in the animated series where Roku does the same thing in the fire temple (in s1). With that, one critique of mine is theyve lessened Roku's role in the live action series compared to the cartoon. He might be thinking of a later episode when Aang turns into Avatar Kyoshi at his trial and we get a flashback of her fighting Chin the Conqueror. Think he just means in general, that her powers look much better in live action.

    Coming from a huge ATLA fan here, I am ok with the adaptation. I love it! There were some ‘meh’ moments for sure but it was a great adaptation overall. I’ve watched the original series when it was first release (2005) and I was 21 years old then. Now at 40, I’ve binge-watched the series over a hundred times and my 2 small kids have watched the it multiple times with me already. That’s why I’m a bit little bit critical. But my kids tho, they are more aggressive in pointing out so many differences.

    Some scenes (and I won't talk about others not to give spoilers) they are more worked on this series than in the cartoon. Kyoshi's scene is an example, but wait until episode 6. The way they work on a specific theme is incredibly more touching than in the cartoon. My opinion, of course. Series 8/10 ❤️

    Ian Ousley (Sokka), Maria Zhang (Suki), and Yvonne Chapman (Kyoshi) stole the show this episode, this is personally my favorite of the first season.

    This episode was one of my favorites ❤ Pudgy is right about Katara and Zuko's lack of chemistry. I wonder if it's because Katara wasn't the best actress, and so some of the chemistry with the other characters felt like acting. But she is a young actress, so she may do better in the next season!

    The first time we see an older Avatar posess Aang was Avatar Roku, which seems they decided to go for Kyoshi this time. Which is fine, its an artistic decision to go slightly different then the original show, but still has a similar purpose. I have yet to see further episodes until now cause I work weekends, but I am excited to see the next episodes.

    The only thing I didn’t like was Katara casually flipping that book and coincidentally finding the information that determines the entire outcome of the episode.
    And then she explains the plot. Show, don’t tell.

    The one thing I loved about Kiyoshi in this adaption is how it reminded me of a Lady Galadriel from The Lord of the Rings. You can see her being gentle, but yet you could see her, especially when she was tempted by the Ring how hard-core she could become. Which is what I think maybe the intention was Kiyoshi was giving Aang tough love on what it means to be the Avatar.

    Yo creo que los actores fueron los ideales para cada personaje, pero siento que la actriz de katara era algo apagada, como si estuviera algo desanimada a comparacion de la version animada, aang nada que decir, un 10 perfecto, mismo carisma, y muy expresivo. Como acotacion personal cre que en cuanto a temperamente y caracter de cada personaje, por supuesto es posible imitar, en cambio lo que es algo mas dificil es imitar los estilos de peleas tal como en la serie animada pero los efectos especiales se lograron muy bien en cada elemento, a comparacion de la pelicula del ultimo maestro aire

It's an earsore 10 decibels higher than your speaking volume that acts as an electrochoc and makes me wince/jolt, especially in the end.
