    Great job; very interesting and informative. I got one 1998 P38 last summer and already needed a 3000 Euros repair on it (only fixing the critical things), but this car is almost like an amusement park: it's just SO nice to drive, that you just want to go out driving for the sake of driving. The sound, the seats, the hight, the air suspension (up and down), the Automatic gear etc: real fun to drive.
    I'd think newer models are just as fun, but cost a little more. So this seems to be a car for those who are specially interested, not a car for those who basically want to go from A to B - and back. It may not take you back due to things braking down 🙂

    Nice videos. I don't know why I haven't seen them before. I have a P38 and I love and hate it... Every time i have any issue i try to fix it myself and stop taking it to the shop. This way I make the improvements needed to prevent from happening again. I'll come back to you soon with some questions. Bye

      I know what you mean Alberto. Love it when it works, but hate that it needs a little bit TLC now and then. But a man needs a hobby, and the P38s become not too bad once you fix all the small issues. Taking it to the shop is really expensive here, and they don't do a good enough job in my opinion (at least to my high standard and expectation). I appreciate you watching and the kind feedback. Take care and good luck with your Range Rover.

    I have owned four P38 petrol and diesel as well as several early two doors and more classics than I can remember. Land Rovers or should I say Range Rovers are very much like smoking.... you know its going to kill you, relieve you of cash and leave you looking prematurely aged but you do it anyway! I currently drive a Nissan X trail after selling my Merc ML270, capable SUV and reliable everyday vehicle with lots of working toys, which replaced.. my Jeep Grand Cherokee, which replaced.. my Ford Explorer, which replaced.. my Mitsubishi Shogun, which replaced.. my Isuzu Trooper.... etc.. etc.. as a mahoosive hole was left when I sold my 2000 P38 2.5TD Rangy... Driving home today I passed a 2.5TD for sale in a local Village for not much money! No.. no.. no.. no.. don't stop! Keep driving! Bugger... here I am watching RUclips posts about the positives of P38 ownership and checking the sums for possible ownership, lets face it they are cr%p? You shouldn't really buy one or even stand close to one unless you are a masochist, single or live in a shed at the bottom of the garden, none of which apply to me! They just get under your skin.... love 'em to bits and yes I am a smoker..... talk about screwed!

      It's a love-hate relationship, James. But it's perhaps not that bad. I think a lot of these cars get neglected and not followed up due to the high cost of ownership. And everything wears out in the end. It sure helps having that shed and be able to do most of the work yourself unless you have a lot of $$$...in which case you'd not drive an old P38 :) I'd like to rebuild one of mine with complete new redesigned electronics, newer engine etc. Time will tell what I find time to do. Good luck and thanks for watching.

      However much I tell myself "I don't need another P38" I just can't help trying to justify why how a purchase could fit into my life... I am fortunate to have a large and well equipped barn but do I really want the grief of worrying about what may fail while transporting, family, caravans and boats! I agree that by now I am probably an expert on the P38 problems.... just don't trust any of the engines... why didn't they just stick with the 300tdi rather than the BMW?

    To reiterate... These cars are worth less than a crapped out 20 year old rust bucket, smoking, steaming Nissan Sentra running for the last 100,000 miles on a blown head gasket, AND makeup oil after its first oil change.. But we love it.

    I bought a P38 as a project car for £3200 and spent £10000+ even doing a lot of work my self. Most comfortable car I ever owned Air suspension was great. Endless problems and 3 motorway breakdowns, poor underpowered engine that drank fuel and pumped black smoke. I eventually gave up it sold on ebay for 2 grand. A month after the sale the furious purchaser contacted me accusing me of ripping him off by selling him a duffer........... despite me having done so much to the car, shame because I love the shape of the P38.If I ever win the lottery I would buy one and completely renovate it..............or would I ????

      Nah, you wouldn't :) I know the feeling. But I can't quite find a replacement either. Well, I hope they'll last a bit longer and have less repairs with proper care now after most issues are fixed. We'll see.... Thanks for watching!

    Nice review. I've always loved the P38 for some reason, watching too much Torchwood probably lol. I'm considering buying one that has been completely redone top to bottom. Owner want's too much because of all the work he has put in it. I'm waiting for him to come down on price cause nobody wants a high mileage old Rover. lol

    Hello good sir, I currently own an 1st Gen Santa Fe diesel automatic and I am itching for an P38 diesel. Is it worth it in 2020 to buy a 2001-2002 P38 2.5 diesel? I've always been an gentle driver that rarely drives over 100-110 km/h and all my cars up to this point have been maintainance easy due to being driven gently. In fact, my current Santa Fe automatic has never seen more than 2500 rpm in 2 years of ownership.

      I bought a brand new P38 diesel with the BMW power unit in March 2000 in Oxford Blue with cream leather interior. It has done 88,000 miles and still has its original exhaust. Contrary to popular belief, it’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I have it serviced every year and the issues I have had over the years are: a new suspension air bag, a new compressor, new glow plugs and 2 or 3 sets of tyres and wiper blades...that’s it. She’s not the quickest girl out the blocks, but looks immaculate. I have no intentions of getting rid. Looked at a new one the other day...£122,000 and honestly the seats were no more comfortable, mines worth ‘sod all’ to change, but worth a lot to me. Love her!

    According to a land rover mechanic friend of mine. When land rover got the bmw engine the power was reduced to 100bhp from 130/140 bhp. When i got mine he told me to get it chipped.

    • @WorkOnP38
      @WorkOnP38  6 лет назад

      Hi Ohmegroin and thanks for watching. The actual fact is that the BMW 2.5 output 143HP and 280Nm in the last of the BMW applications, and 136HP and 270Nm in the Range Rover application. There were 7 revisions of the M51 engine during it's lifetime.

    If you are thinking of getting an L322 it's best to hold out for a 2008 or 2009 as they were the most reliable versions. They have the Ford/Jaguar engine and Terrain Response. I have a 2008 supercharged version and it is a joy to drive. My 2000 P38 is for rough road use.

    Hello. I have a problem with my P38 2.5 tds. The engine stalls when i put it in any gear from P or N, or when the ac compressor starts when it s at idle. Or when i break hard.
    The injection pomp it s refurbished. The diesel pomp in the tank its new.
    If i start the engine and after i put the car in D or any gear its ok. At the starts of the engine i think it has more fuel and its ok. What can be the problem? Thank you

    Might run a bit better with the EGR valve removed, and add ZX1 all round, (mine did).

    • @WorkOnP38
      @WorkOnP38  6 лет назад

      Thanks for watching and sharing Peter. Just to clarify, it doesn't run "bad", it's just a little underpowered for the application. It suffices for most things. Compared to a V8-plant or more modern engines it's a slouch to be honest :) I've done 1500kg caravan vacation with it and well... yeah... Towing needs a bit more power indeed. The BMW M57 engine successor would have been great though. I know my EGRs aren't that dirty and operates fine so it probably won't gain too much be blanking it off. I might try it one day as an experiment and do some before-and-after tests for fun (of course with a video). Sorry that I'm not familiar with ZX1 and what it does. Got any more details on the ZX1?

      Work On P38 ya. mine was a bit sluggish and i was only getting 19 mph.. i was advised to remove the egr valve and fit a power box (RonBox). plus add ZX1 to all metal to metal moving parts. I'm now getting 30 mpg.

      No much I'm afraid, Valerjis. I believe they are early P38's without an intercooler so they produce a little less power (116 HP vs 136 HP and 222 Nm vs 270 Nm). Other than that I don't think there is much difference though. I think the 136 HP is a little on the low side already, so I personally wouldn't get a lower powered unit unless you're just going to do slow speed off-road perhaps. Thanks for watching!

  • @kimballscarr

    These sh_tboxes are designed to appeal to the yuppy in the showroom. By adding a bunch of electronic crap, frills and gremlins, that not ONE owner can figure out the day after picking it up at the dealer, to a rugged capable off-road car, a capability the yuppy will never use. This ties the yuppy checkbook to the service department to even open the doors. After a year or two or three or so the gremlins and the lure of the new car showroom lure the yuppies back for new again, and make the car worth less than a crapped out 20 year old rust bucket, smoking, steaming Nissan Sentra running for the last 100,000 miles on a blown head gasket.
    And, now we can afford to buy the car for the off-roadability and ruggedness. But we are stuck will fighting off the gremlins. Some given in and keep it stock and accept the continued gremlin battle... some disable everything the gremlins can mess up. But in the end we love these bloody good off-on road cars and keep them despite the problems and the scraps and scuffs.

      I love the P38 I had one years ago and miss it. The L322 is a big beautiful beastie, but the gearboxes are made out of chocolate and that's an expensive short coming.
