  • A tribute to football legend George Best, highlighting the ups and downs of a very controversial career. He became an idol at Manchester United and for Northern Ireland during the late 1960s and 1970s with his electrifying pace and scored some of the most exciting goals ever seen at Old Trafford, before the life of partying, women and alcohol took over and prematurely finished his career.

I have seen Best play two times, first time he was at his absolute peak, playing alongside Charlton, Law etc the next time I saw him was 4 years later he was a different player/person, a complete change in his appetite, what I saw the first time had left him sadly, consistency is what makes anyone the best at anything.

There was talk on TalkSport today about was their an English Messi. I'd suggest there was a British Messi and that was George Best.If he had born around 1990 he'd have been a world sensation.

Thats true gerrard jones. So true. When the public know who the true geniuses was. And george was a true genius. People have to remember they never even saw best at his peak and he lost at least 8 great years at man utd wich would have taken him to age 35. And he still would have been the best player on the park. If he kept fit. He was a pure natural. Thats all naturals have to do is stay fit. But george didnt do that.

Tavy@ i can clearly remembering buying this on video tape in 1991 when i was age 17. In 1988 my friend had the george best story wich included georges testamonail in belfast. Becouse manchester utd had refused best a testamonail match wich i found hard to believe. I just couldnt believe after what george gave to man utd plus all the great games and what he did to defenders and those great goals he scored. It just didnt seem right. Tbh it was george that won them the european cup if you watch all the games up to the final. In madrid against real madrid in the semi final george set up 2 goals and ran them ragged, taking a few blatant knocks as he went. But george was solid as a player. In the final at wembley if you watch the full match george ran them into the ground and they kicked him from pillar to post but george just got back up again. But i had no idea how great he was and he made it look all too easy as if benfica were a primary team to him and they couldnt stop him. His goal was brilliant, the way he ran onto it then put it through the full backs legs then went round the keeper. It was a brilliant goal the way he made it out of nothing then to have the nerve to go round the keeper in a european cup final in extra time in the way he did was a bit special. On this video tape theres alot of great goals that it doesnt show and thats what we like to see. But its still a great video tape. It feels funny now saying 'video tape' rip george

I have read loads of autobiographys about footballers. And saw loads of interviews by denis law and read two of his books and i notice he never says george was the greatest player he ever saw. Wich i find strange becouse he was the greatest player ever. Maybe denis just couldnt addmit george was better than him. Wich he was by a stretch, but law was brilliant too and bobby was maybe better than law? Bobby was great to watch, the way he just did those step overs to send the player the other way with his back to him to give him that extra two or three yards to then hit a 50 yard pass with any foot right onto the players foot. Bobby was so under rated. Bobby was up there with the true greats of the game. And the way he glided past players as if they wernt there. But george was the greatest. He was braver, stronger, more skillfull, timing, flair, tenacity, great in the air, he could control the ball with any part of his body and at 90mph and he had brilliant balance not just with the ball but over his own body, he had remarkable speed of thought, he could dribble so good and in so many different ways. No obvouse flaw that i could see.

Denis thought the legendary Argentinian & Real Madrid maestro. Alfredo Di Stéfano was the greatest of them all. So did George Best coincidently. Bobby Charlton was off the same view. As was Johan Cruyff.
This comp of Di Stéfano vs France 1958; ruclips.net/video/3ZBUBILRAmc/видео.html
goes a long way to explain, why all those illustruious names rated him as their GOAt.
Di Stéfano ball control & dribbling on mud heap pitches was astonishing! 👀
Di Stéfano I rate 2nd behind Pelé in the soccer annuals of the game.
Both, the most complete players I've seen.
I just give Pelé the nod, because he had all manners of ball improvisational skills, not seen in the game at that time ( sombero's, rabona's, playing one-twos of defenders shins, etc ). Powerfully heading technique. And a barrage of brillantly struck free kicks.

If Lionel Messi had had to contend with the conditions that Best did, playing in the '60s, he wouldn't shine as brightly as he does now, but conversely, a Best or a di Stefano, Charlton or Eusebio would thrive in today's conditions.
