  • I love to take road trips and camping in my Subaru Forester. I recently customized my aluminum rooftop tent with heavy lift gas struts, a white roof wrap and a bunch of other goodies. A large comfortable roof top tent without giving up all of the space in the Thule roof box! It's all mounted on my 2019 Subaru Forester Sport. Check it out and let me know what you think!

    Such a great video!!! I love your whole set up, so cool. I feel like there’s so many rooftop tent outback videos, but not as many for the forester. Love your forester sport btw!

      @@jackmankins2520 they're both nice cars, just depends on if you want more vertical space (forester) or horizontal space (outback) inside, japanese-made (forester) or american-made (outback), more touchscreen controlled-stuff (outback) or more physical buttons and dials (forester) and obviously other stuff too. I did get a new forester, unfortunately the forester sport in the video was totaled in a hit and run about a month after I filmed this. It protected me and my dog so I decided to get another.

      @@jackmankins2520 I ended up getting the Wilderness, because I thought maybe I'd want to tow a trailer sometime and for all of the other features, but in hindsight, I wish I'd bought another Sport and just put all terrain tires on it again. The gearing on the wilderness really kills MPG. I think the Sport is still the best value and I could get over 28 MPG at 65 MPH even with the tent and Thule. Now with my wilderness I have no tent, only a Thule and a roof rack and I'm lucky if I get 23.5. It also sags in the back with 2 ebikes on the hitch so the extra tongue weight capacity doesn't really seem to make a difference for me

    Hi can you let me know what static load you have had on the car. I'd like to get an aluminium clamshell tent for my Forester but the 80kg max stated load of the Forester means I can't carry anything on top of the ones I've been looking at.

    • @AlfredoAve
      @AlfredoAve  7 месяцев назад

      Hi, the static load (when the car is parked) is not an issue. I think the owner's manual states 700 pound limit. The dynamic load limit on this forester is listed at 170 pounds. Dynamic load indicates when the car is in motion. This setup was probably about 180 pounds with the roof box empty, but I drove at least 40,000 miles with the roof box full of gear so the total dynamic load I had was probably 230 or 240 pounds. I just made sure everything was mounted securely, checked it periodically, and drove conservatively - no sharp turns at high speeds, etc... I usually drove at 65-70 MPH to keep my fuel economy decent. I never had a problem.

    Hey there I just got a forester and want to set up a rooftop tent on top of the car. Yet none of the outdoor stores in Perth (Australia) sell roof racks / bicycle bars that can be mounted on the existing rails of the subaru (they only sell those that can be clamped). Did you have to drill yours into the rails or did you just clamp them?

    • @AlfredoAve
      @AlfredoAve  Месяц назад

      The crossbars clamp onto the Forester's roof rails. I'm not sure if they're available in Australia, but they are great crossbars and a much better value that Thule or Yakima. The bars are Malone Airflow 2, they're available in aluminum or black color and 50, 58 and 65 inch lengths. They are priced at less than $200 in the US. No drilling required, they clamp onto the roof rails and lock in place. I've used the Malone bars on 2 Foresters and they work great. I've had heavy loads of well over 200 lbs dynamic (while driving) and 500 lbs static (while parked, camping) on the bars and they've been just fine.

    So I have a '21 Forester Sport like you, with the OEM roof rack and crossbars. I see you have the Malone cross bars; can you link me to the exact ones you have? I'd like to get them, since I'm looking at rooftop tents myself! Thanks for all the info.

    • @AlfredoAve
      @AlfredoAve  Год назад

      The bars are Malone Airflow 2. They come in 50, 58 and 65 inch versions. The bars in this video are 58. This car got totaled in a hit and run - the bars actually survived, but I accidentally broke the key in the lock rushing to take them off in the towyard in 10 degree weather (my fault) and didn't have it in me to go back again and try to drill them out while I was still recovering from the accident, so that was my fault. On my new build on my 22 Forester Wilderness (video coming soon) I'm using the Malone 65 inch bars. Very happy with them.
      You can find them at a bunch of retailers. First set I bought from Dicks, the 2nd I bought from Backcountry.
      Here's a link to the Amazon listing for the 58 inch version like in this video (affiliate): amzn.to/3TwR1WE

      @@AlfredoAve Is there a specific size you liked the best for the tent? I'm looking at the 58" or 60" as well. Not sure if it really matters?

    • @AlfredoAve
      @AlfredoAve  Год назад

      @@87_North it just depends on what you plan to put on it, if you do/don't like the look of wider bars, if you want extra room to add stuff, etc. Hitting your head is NOT an issue if you put the bars in the right place on the rails (if you can see where mine are in the vid).
      The bars in the video are 58 inches. That tent was 55 inches wide and 58 inch bars are actually just about 55 inches (they count the black plastic endcaps in the length and they are 1.5 inches each i think)
      Before that I had a 50 inch wide tent and there was room to mount an awning on the 58 inch bars as well.
      The 65s I have now are definitely pretty wide but I'm glad I got em.

    How much does the tent and cargo box weigh total?

    • @AlfredoAve
      @AlfredoAve  7 месяцев назад

      Probably about 180 pounds empty and 230 or 240 pounds when the box was loaded with gear. I know it's above what it's rated for, but I never had a problem. Basically, you just don't want to take curves at high rates of speed or slam on the brakes and jerk the wheel around. It's how I drive anyway. I usually kept my speed around 65 MPH with this setup for fuel economy anyway.
