      Your post is really precise and informative. Really appreciate it, will definitely be tuning in to your additional talks in future. Can I just check with you - how long can a normal air pump and air excretion sponge last? Thks

    You should plug your shirt in at the end of your video. You might loose view time for those who won't stick around. Just my two cents, great content 🔥

    I’m a strong believer in air stones.. I run them on all my tanks and they seem to filter better and substrate cleaner.. I don’t run sponge filters.. but I do use air stones instead of powerheads and wave makers as much as possible to keep debris suspended till intakes get them. On heavy planted tanks I also sleep well at night knowing not going to wake up to a tank with a massive o2 crash. Mostly to me a tank with bubbles is just more appealing lol.

    I used sponge filters and a hang filter on my tanks....also always used a air filter for connecting diffusers and air stones to help promote oxygen and to move heat around tank.

    My understanding is that air pumps do not increase the oxygen in a tank, it is said that it does let the water 'gas off' by interrupting the surface.
    I only use air and a large sponge when I'm trying to cycle a tank, it seems to cycle faster than just the canister alone?
    The glass lids are always harder to clean when I have air burst at the surface, it creates more of that stuff you have to scrape off with a razor blade.
    I keep Discus and Flowerhorns...

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  6 лет назад +1

      That is correct. The oxygen happens during a gas exchange when the surface tension of the water is disrupted.

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 6 лет назад

      Wouldn’t it seem to reason that if it cycles a tank faster that if likely helps filter the tank better? The two are on in the same.

    • @Bass.Player
      @Bass.Player 6 лет назад

      It's not the air pump it's the sponge filter which would do the same if a power head was pushing the water through it..

    • @fishrrelaxing9361
      @fishrrelaxing9361 6 лет назад

      Bass Player you completely missed the point. If it’s good enough to cycle a tank faster as you say is your experience then common sense would lead one to believe that it is a better filtration device then whatever else you’re using when the tank is already cycled for that specific tank. There is nothing conducive biologically speaking that would make one filter type cycle faster then another other then dwell time. Dwell time is also the only part of filtration that actually matters. The more contact time water has through media the better the filtration is. I was challenging your perception of filtering not anything to do with air in particular.

    • @Bass.Player
      @Bass.Player 6 лет назад

      I did not miss the point, you are misunderstanding what I am saying. In addition to the 'canister' filter the addition of a sponge filter speeds the cycle time. In no way will a sponge filter on it's own air driven or not handle more conversion than a large canister suited for 200 gallons and is what I use.
      You should probably go back and re-read my original post. "it seems to cycle faster than just the *canister* alone"

    How can i fix this? I have 2 african cichlids

    I have a tropical tank with guppies in it, and my air pump is ridiculously loud and stops me from sleeping sometimes, do I need it on 24/7 or can it turn it off at night?

    • @TazawaTanks

      You should leave it on 24-7. You can place it on top of a piece of foam or a folded towel to muffle the sound.

    Hey Zenzo, I enjoyed this video; it was very informative. I see newer hobbyists ask all the time on our group page, as well as a others. I am not currently using any air pumps on my two tanks, but I am certainly not opposed to using them. I have a sump with an additional canister filter that I feel is more than adequate at this time. I just prefer to obtain surface agitation through those means. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this video.

    Hello . I love sponge filters they are the best most simple filter around. I never have problems with ammonia since using these. Never been a fan of canisters. HOB filter are ok but sponges rule all . Work great easy to maintain and last forever. My only question is ya how you were talking about wTer pockets in tank. Do you think they do enough water movement so you don’t have water pockets?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  6 лет назад

      If you are referring to dead spots in the tank, you can always add a small power head. The other thing to do would be to add an airstone on the other side of the tank.

    I have a 14 gallon tank with tetras a d Cory's in it plus 3 snails. I am also cycling a 3.5 gallon tank cycling ready for a betta, I've watched programs about the Amazon and the water there is very stagnant I believe. I am also lec to believe bettas don't like fast flowing water so I'm assuming for both my aquariums I don't need to worry to much about an airstone? However for all of you who use one I do think it makes your tanks look very beautiful.
