Fr when I heard about SM releasing a female SuperM group with a name, “Girls on Top”, I for sure thought I’m gonna hear a female empowerment type of song but instead we get assaulted with “Silly girl” 🤧

It's pitting women against women over a man, and it's from the pov of women putting down and being condescending against other women FROM the pov of a man, since it was written by a man. it's perpetuating the notion of toxic femininity. It's boiling down women into this shallow, toxic state of mind and making it seem like ALL we care about is our "man". That's called internalized misogyny, and since it's FROM a man, it's institutionalized sexism.
Right?! They had FOUR generations of some of the most successful female idols in the history of kpop... you would think an empowerment song would have been a no brainer. 😔 Or at the very least, a flex song about how awesome they are... like what're you doing SM?!

Tippy Toes was like a warning, coming in and quietly announcing their presence, saying "hey you should watch out for us, we'll take you by surprise", before they went for our throats with Mascara. I've had the song on repeat since I found it, and their dance is amazing, with so many little details you don't catch at first. Thanks so much for your reaction!

People seemed surprised by how they seem to have a big budget. What people forget is that the Japanese music market is much bigger than the Korean market.
That’s why K-pop first aimed Japanese market for their global expansion anyway.
Small/big isn’t about the quality, it’s just that Japan has a bigger population and its economy is bigger.
Also, because Japanese market is big, Japanese companies only thought about domestic trends and tastes, while Korean companies always researched and evolved for global audiences. XG is produced by Avex, which is bigger than YG, SM or JYP in terms of budget. So I’m glad a Japanese company is finally aiming global markets. It’s very smart of them to use the popularity of K-pop to aim Western audience because they can just use the path that K-pop has made. It’s very sneaky of them but good for them.
Yea, people seem to forget that the US is the biggest music market in the world, but Japan is the second biggest.

I was surprisingly hooked to Mascara on first-listen and made me regret not checking out XG sooner! Still in shock they're super young too (eldest members are just 20, youngest is 16 almost 17), you wouldn't know given how mature and confident they are!

I think that it is their style, their concept. Very Western feel, and with this song, performance, a very empowered subject that resounds for anyone who has been affected by mistreatment in a relationship. It is playful, in your face and yet serious about not allowing someone to control your self esteem. Neither Maya (she leveled up from Tippy Toes WOW!) nor Cocona seem to be 16 years old. I think it really started for me when I saw their solo dances. That was unreal. Nothing that said rookies, trainees or unsure of themselves. You will never see them in a school girl pleated skirt on stage. Just not their style.
7:17 to add to what you said here, obviously the camera work and editing makes the dancing look great but I just have to say that the main reason why the dancing is so great is because ALL the members are top tier dancers, if you have time to check out their mascara live stage, tippy toes dance practice or even their pre-debut stuff, you'll be blown away. I'm so so curious as to how these girls were trained because their dancing is seriously on another level

that’s the word, blown away. im not crazy w/ girl groups coz either the song isn’t right up my alley or the members just don’t look very well put together (level of dance skills). but since I saw tippy toes, I’ve been so obsessed with just how sharp and well calculated their moves are like they must be dancing on top of rulers with protractors in every bone, to me it just looks like no member is doin it over the top yet they go hard and no member is left behind coz they all follow the same flow. This comment is long because I’m obsessed 😂

XG is the future. It's the first time that I've stanned another group full-time since BLACKPINK. I was just a casual listener during tippy toes, but now I'm a fan.
With only two releases, they already managed to solidify their identity. Plus their girl crush concept feels very authentic to them. Like before blackpink, the most common girl group concept was either cutesy or sexy/daring. Then they came along with a fresh girl crush which made them stood out. Unfortunately since that became a success, others also started to follow the girl crush trend, which shouldn't have been an issue if only it doesn't feel forced. That's why it's refreshing to see some rare new groups that come up with a new concept such as IVE (they are also great at showcasing what their music/identity is all about with just two releases).
XG is an exception though when it comes to the girl crush trend, because c'mon now, this isn't girl crush anymore, *IT'S GIRL BOSS.* More importantly, an authentic one.
XG is testing and challenging the Asian pop boundaries ahaha
Girl crush concept didn't start with BLACKPINK. 2NE1 and to an extent 4Minute created and popularized the girl crush concept before BLACKPINK, et. al. came to the Kpop scene.
@@cavendish2925 I never said they started it. I said they came with a "fresh" girl crush concept. 4minute and 2ne1's girl crush style are kinda bolder and punker. Meanwhile, blackpink's girl crush concept has a feminine touch with swag. Nonetheless, though blackpink didn't start girl crush, they revolutionized an already existing concept into something fresh.

i hate comparing groups but when it comes to xg everything about them screams on another level than the normal kpop scene. Everything feels genuine and every single part of their title tracks keep up... lyrics are good, vocals stunning ugh the bridge! dancing is soooo cool, fashion is on point, and charisma is just oozing from them. Sometimes i feel like kpop groups want to emphasize the dancing or pure vocals instead of a well balanced group. in addition almost every single member shines (I hope the blond gurl gets more linezzz though! she seems cool) in their own unique way instead of as a role of "rapper" etc. ya know?
@eskayjo im sorry what lmao, this group is absolutely top notch. every single member is phenomenal at dancing, they excel at what their speciality is and literally all of them SHINE on stage. I would say one of the very few groups so far where the group is extremely balanced with all of them being at quite literally the same level, a good level. along with that, the company is doing a great job with showcasing every member and really understand them all. go find something else do with your energy instead putting these girls down, they're anything but cringe lmao.
i am so looking forward in the years to come for the XG and NiziU Japan domination. both are amazing super talented multi language groups.
they are my new fav group and this song is my fav.. they are really very talented..they will be a big thing one day for sure but i think we can praise them, appreciate them for their skills without dragging others down..it was irrevalent and unnecessary to compare..be a respectful fan please.. no toxicity in this fandom..
@eskayjo been into Kpop since SNSD, I could easily say XG is the best girl group for the past 2 decades.
Avex is big in Japan, so they definitely got money like that. Expect them to keep hiring kpop producers to help produce future music and company also said the girls have been learning korean for last 5 years so hoping for a Korean release soon.

I hope they don't do songs in Korean and keep it in English or maybe a mix with some japanese, but if they are serious about being global, they shouldn't go for something that's going to make them look like kpop when they said they're not.
@@Renzo_ I think approaching Kpop industry is just a start point for them to reach global audience since Kpop is getting so popular these days. Also their stage presence and vocal are delivered so differently from Kpop, I barely see any Kpop style from their performance except the outfit, even the dance choreography feels different. That's why I believe that their training is just for English songs only.

XG is under XGALAX, a subsidiary of Avex, but other sources say it's a joint venture between Avex and a Korean company. But their company is not Avex.
I like Mascara a lot. Not quite as much as tippy toes but been playing it on loop regardless.
Really excited for what else they got in stock for us, especially now that they are promoting on music shows

Agree!!!! I prefer Tippy Toes for sure, it was less pop and the choreo was awesome. Mascara is more commercial, I had to listen to it a couple of times but now I'm hooked 😂

I like Tippy Toes as a debut. I feel like it was "here is how different we can be". Mascara is more mainstream and says, "This is how we fit in, but still stand out"
Agree on them being badazz scary. I don't follow Kpop so much, but that is such a rare look for Japan. And it does remind me of some Little Mix songs and videos with that vibe.
I get the same feeling, that they dont act like a rookie group, full of young girls. I see mature women even though two of the members(Cocona and Maya) are still 16 years old. Compared to Lapillis, even though their age range is quite similar to XG, there is such a different feel. It may simply be the choice of song and style but XG is special.
Lapillus also doesn't feel like a rookie group to me. If I were to compare Lapillus and XG with other girl groups that debuted recently then maybe we can compare them to Classy, ILY 1, IVE, or Lesserafirm. Even NMIXX doesn't feel like a rookie group. I guess it's because of the training period and their skill and confidence on stage. I haven't seen that from the groups I'm comparing them to.
At start i was not too sure, now im obsessed with this, its incredibly catchy and this girls are soo charismatic, i see them having a successful future

XG are great. Seriously, this was such a great song and I loved the lyrics. I am still curious as to how exactly they're going to keep promoting themselves given how broad their target demographic is, but they seriously are incredibly talented and love all their music so far. I am a fan so far!

From what I've observed, XG has a very unique aura that is something new even for japanese industry! and I agree that cocona ( the rapper girl ) delivered that in such a different way, but the rap video they did featuring jurin and Harvey is great too! their rap are clean and strong. they don't try to make the rap in a pop way it sounds very raw and inserted into the song!!!

I am surprised nobody called out the chorus line "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to" is lifted from "It's My Party" by Lesley Gore (1963), also famously covered by Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin in 1981, which held UK number 1 for a few weeks.
I'm pretty sure it's because the tune is so different from each song. Like compared to the interpolation in Melanie Martinez's "Pity Party", I could see how people couldn't connect the dots despite it being an iconic line.

I kinda sorta wish Tippy Toes was the comeback and THIS was the debut. Because this is a POWERHOUSE release. XG is going to be one of the biggest groups ever, because they’re SO TALENTED and not limiting themselves to the k-pop or j-pop market.
For me if this was their debut song I would feel it's kinda generic to Kpop and they're not Kpop anyways. 'Tippy Toes' was so different for me and that's what I loved about it, the simplicity yet so much confidence at the same time. I still love Mascara though, they really turned up and I'm glad XG is getting more attention because of it.

This song felt like a dope combination of Weki Meki's "COOL" and Pussycat Dolls "When I Grow Up"
I think the reason why Jurin expresses so much confidence is because 1, her visual of course, and 2 because she was a fashion model growing up so she knows how to work the camera

I was waiting for your reaction!! I'm completely in love with this comeback. Tippy Toes is still one of my favorite songs but, like you said, Mascara shows an evolution and it made me more excited for their future releases. The girls are so talented and they deserve more support and recognition. I'm glad they're now promoting their song on music shows and the general public are starting noticing them.

I love XG, it's the first group I stan, never been a fan of anything before but this girls from their pre debut just caught me 😆
One of the things that I have noticed about their singles it's that you can hear them on repeat and it's still really good, I don't get tired of hearing them, I have been streaming Mascara like crazy on every platform and I still enjoy it so much that is kind of shocking but in a good way.
Both songs are really good and I hope for the next one to be in between I want to hear that chill but extremely cool vibe again

Well, they are part of their concept global pop, since it is a group that was born with a view to the international public, they are not going to focus much / only on Korean attention, one of the reasons why their songs are all in English
