I have enjoyed attending merino ram sales but have not attended one in person for a while now. I was told that a good ram needs strong back legs and a strong back. I would see intending buyers look at the teeth / mouth of a ram and go to the SIDE (never the top back area) of the belly and horizotally open up the wool and examine the wool for how krinkled/wavy the wool was and then close the wool back again. An older farmer said he could look at the conformation of the ram to confirm it was a good one. I used to notice that the stud merino rams waiting to be auctioned had great "presence" - almost regal - somehow those merino rams knew they were very special I liked all the statistics you were provided with re each ram prior to the auction. There is a whole lo of information that an intending buyer does need to make an informed decision I prefer the Merino rams with horns. The poll rams just seem less impressive to me. Did you know that each Merino ram offered at the Royal Show (then live) auction of rams used to attract really high prices per ram? This example be;ow demonstrates that: "The all-time record price in nominal terms is $450,000 (valued at $967,890 today) paid for J.C and S Lustre- sold at the 1989 Royal Adelaide Show on account of Neil Garnett, Collinsville, Burra, SA, and bought by Richard Nitschke, Willogoleche Merino stud, Hallett SA." even recently there was a good ram sale where the best ram sold for$100,000 : "Buyer Will Lynch, Boorana stud, Woorndoo, Vic, was bowled over by the 119.5 kilograms ram's wool quality and structure, along with the chance to introduce a new family to his stud. He has previously had plenty of success with Glenlea Park bloodlines. Quite a few sheep have unbelievable structure but not the best wool or vice versa but he ticked both boxes," Mr Lynch said." Love your videos. Love that your wife is contributing so much too.
Well I may not be the best at knowing about White Suffolk’s, but you guys got yourselves some good rams, Dad’s been to a ram sale too last week, bought 5 new Merino Rams for about $14k all up, and hopefully they’ll do the job come breeding next year.

Yes was a good price! Yes Suffolk’s into crossy ewes do make some cracking lambs!

Oh very nice! That’s a cool line of work to be in and great to be using quality well made products!
I’ve been doing this since 1991 and it is a unique line of work cheers from Glen
Very cool mate! If I ever get a pool table and it needs refelting I know where to go!
@@merrettcontracting yep
Did you end up buying ram 141... noticed you gave him a scratch
Good rams
Yeah I reckon too
I am live in mount gambier I might see you
You might’ve! We were down there a couple weeks ago
I buy sheep at woolies
That’s the best place!
Do you guys do merinos
We buy in merino ewes but don’t have any merino rams
Do you need to buy each year new rams
We don’t need to but if we just buy a few each year we never have to buy a lot at one time
@@merrettcontracting What about inbreeding then !!
Great question but it’s not an issue for us because we buy our ewes in they are never related to any rams that we buy
I look for a ram that issues home loans and works on commission 😂
😂😂😂
