I work in law enforcement. There are people who seriously do this. Incarceration rates always spike in the winter where I am, as people will deliberately get themselves arrested so they have three hots and a cot instead of freezing out in the snow.

It's scary how real a story like this is. I've been locked up a couple different times, well more like 6 times for a grand total of about a year and a half but anyways, I've seen many guys intentionally get themselves locked up. I remember one time I was homeless and on probation and I was totally shot face drunk during winter. I ran into some police officers and one of the officers actually sent the other cops away. He sat down with me and talked to me and I asked him to arrest me for violating probation(as I was drunk) he refused and he actually gave me his personal cell number. He called me many times to check up on me and make sure I wasn't out there dying of frostbite or something. Nice guy, I'm glad he didn't arrest me despite me damn near begging him to.

So with the STANDARD configuration I run for CO2 powered BB stuff, that's a total of 50 years federal prison plus probably 10 more in state. So much for being a free country or having the right to keep and bear arms, but now you go from a 10 year old kid to 70 years old retired criminal by the time you get out. "Assuming the crime was committed in the United States and the perpetrator was not armed or violent, a theft of low-cost items like chips and candy would typically be classified as petty theft (also known as petty larceny in some jurisdictions), which is a misdemeanor in most states. Petty theft generally includes the theft of items valued at less than a certain amount, often $500 or $1,000, but the threshold can vary by state.
For a first offense, petty theft is often punishable by a fine, probation, and/or a relatively short jail sentence - typically less than a year. However, if the individual has previous convictions, especially for similar offenses, the penalties could be more severe. Some states have laws that increase penalties for repeat offenders.
In addition, some states have implemented "three strikes" laws, which can lead to significantly longer sentences for individuals who commit multiple crimes, even if those crimes are relatively minor. However, these laws have been controversial and their application can vary."

Watch a single cover on how life in prison is before making headless takes. Also what is life after prison? Nobody is going to hire you. Despite being wrong on what happens in real life you also manage to completely miss the point of justice. The point of prison is that a person gets rehabilitated it's not about having or losing responsibility.
