Also so damn happy to see comments from non readers getting excited about this and are ordering the books. Just fantastic, the books are incredible. And so is the netflix adaptation.
James, I am f***ing loving this series. Beyond the great story/content, your subtle sense of humor and your cerebral analysis of the episodes adds SO MUCH to the experience. Thank you
If I had the same life experiences as she had at that point in her life, in that time in history and that location, yes, absolutely would have pushed that button
The human computer scene is one of the coolest things to read from the books. I know there's a limit with the Netflix series since it needs to introduce difficult scientific concepts to the casual audience but I would highly recommend that you read that chapter.
Enjoying the adaptation and your analysis. I do have to say that in the book, the 30 million human army computer is one of the wildest things I've ever read, just hugely imaginative. It blew my mind page after page as they were coming up with the idea and then using it. I appreciated its depiction in the show, but from your reaction, I can see how it fell short as just a one-scene throwaway. The book has so many wild ideas like this, especially stuff that happens on the Tri-Solaran homeworld... I honestly don't know how the grandeur of these concepts will translate to the screen. Another small detail I noticed, the episode opens with a close up of a statue of Lord Shiva, Destroyer of Worlds, the basis of Oppenheimer's original reference. So... there's that! Oh, and I'm don't think it's necessarily been presented that the Tri-Solarans are pacifists. A pacifist on their planet was the first to see Wenjie's message and warned her not to reply because the rest of his people were not so friendly. (There might be different factions over there, just as there are here.)
I thought the human computer was well translated to the series, tbh. Specially being a tv show and not a big budget movie. It was visually impressive. Edit: I'm finding funny in the comments how you can know if someone has read the book if they call them tri-solarians. I don't think they ever used that term in the show. 😅
The original book is in Chinese, the word san-ti is basically a transliteration of the word three body but I guess in the show using San-ti makes the aliens sound more exotic
@@jal051 I think they decided Trisolarans sounded kind of goofy. Santi sounds more like a real name. And possibly there's a nod to the real - life religion Santeria.
Given her circumstances and backstory, I think it’s completely understandable that Wenjie pressed Send. It was a great play on expectations (especially in the book) but makes sense. This is basically her villain origin story!
I’m glad you’re doing this by episode. When Jack was killed I don’t think she was there. They have access to their minds, so he offed himself, it was all in his head.
oooo I didnt even think of that, I love that. I guess I assumed she was there because he "knew too much" and had to be gotten rid of but you're right. they could've done it that way
It should be noted that the scientist in Iran who died who they new played the game, was not clearly a suicide. They were not allowed to fully investigate by the Iranian authorities. Jack, who played the game did not commit suicide. The scientist who drowned themselves, was classified as a suicide, but there is doubt that someone could commit suicide that way. And in fact, there are those who believe that Openheimers mistress was assassinated. Meanwhile non of the game users that we know if got the countdown. Auggie got the count down, but she was not invited to play the game. The eye gouged out guy, got the count down, but did not get invited to the game. So, one could speculate that those who get the countdown either stop their research or commit suicide, but those who get the game and die may do so because they failed, by turning down the recruitment. Remember, Jack new too much after his meeting. Maybe that was what happened to the 2 others who played the game and died. They turned down the offer to help the aliens too, and so were killed.
I did wonder if that family were members of The ETO (or whatever the bad guys are called in this series). Will was suspicious of the boyfriend, and he seems to be remarkably intuitive.
I didn't get the story of Raj's father either, nor Will's talk with his cancercells, which on this review make much more sense now! Also it's worth mentioning that despite the fact that the SAN-TI behave collectively, the first message seemed to be from an individual stating he/she "is a pacifier and we're lucky he received the message first"...
9:45 She also makes herself invisible from the Inspectors eyes who is sitting outside the house and can’t see the murder. His eyes are also being controlled.
This series is great, and so are your straight to the point video explainers! I’m already getting so much more out of the show having heard from you about the subtleties and connecting threads and references. Thanks so much!
9:47 the scene when Jack was unalived, the cell phone having no signal. This happened with us weeks ago with the AT&T cellular issue. My phone (and everyone else’s) was doing the same thing as his.
It was only one santi that said that they were a pacifist. They said that if the message had reached any other of the santi that they would come conquer earth. That one santi gave the warning because that particular individual was a pacifist. It shows that even though they are vastly different than humans, they do have some sort of individual agency. Freaking awesome videos though, exactly the kind of breakdown i was looking for once i started watching the series. Fantastic content
oh okay that actually makes a lot of sense, I guess I assumed that they had this kind of collective consciousness, especially with how mike communicates with them and thank you so much! episode 5 is coming tomorrow !!
That's a small inconsistency, tbh. IIRC in the book he had a whole explanation about how the individual was only able to think by himsself under very specific circumstances. It's been a while since I read it and it may happen much later on in the story revisiting this moment.
This response appears to be quite self-centered. I find it surprising that some individuals would even contemplate pressing the button. Regardless of how disappointed one person may feel about the world or how angry they are with their environment, it does not grant them the right to inflict harm on unrelated third parties. The underlying message seems to be that just because someone has had a difficult day, they can treat others poorly-even those they don’t know. Personally, while I may harbor unhappiness about the world, it certainly doesn’t translate into a desire to harm the lives of people I’ve never met. Compassion and understanding should prevail, even in challenging moments
It’s interesting that Auggie, even though she got the countdown, wasn’t invited to play… even though Vera probably also had the countdown.. or maybe she went crazy because of the game?
If the aliens have been able to survive and advance so much in a inhabitantable planet. Why don't they just go to like Jupiter and colonize there. Sure it is possible they or us would expand at some point where conflict is inevitable. But there could also be a chance that the time from now to then we can work things out.
Perhaps they will. But they would still be suspicious of The Terrans since two species would now be competing for solar resources, and want to damage their science as much as possible.
Jupiter is almost entirely a gas planet and both civilizations are too big to co-exist on earth so one would have to wipe out the other. Only option I could see is the San-Ti terraform mars and we could-exist in the solar system that way.
Great reviews so far. I read the first book. Pretty much all sci-fi writers can't write characters. That said, I felt the characterization in Liu's work was particularly bland/dry/lacking. I have been pleasantly surprised by the acting and fleshing out of the characters in this show. Dare I say the GOT boys are redeeming themselves?
Yeah, I feel like the book made the wild concepts very cool. Since a screen adaptation by its nature can't necessarily do that, it's making up for it with interesting characters. So I'm enjoying them both for different reasons. I too read the first book before the show started. I'd wanted to read all three, and will definitely get through the other two as soon as I finish the show.

How would logic gates work if they're in a rectangular grid, with only one flag in front of them? Gates need two inputs. Liu's explanation of the human computer was mind blowing, and that scene in the show could have been improved if the directors had taken the time to explain what was going on.
