Guys, the $90 works out: $.02 for plastic $.12 for circuit board $45 for sashimi platter for Miyamoto's lunch. $43 for Yakuza tithing and the rest is profit.
Did you go back on reddit to see what people are saying about it now? They probably won't admit they're wrong but it would still be funny to see they're expressions. Lol
I still can't believe this thing is $90. I can understand the cost of the Switch itself and maybe even the charging cable which can run at a few different speeds but this along with the charging grip just seem to be way overpriced for what they are. My opinion might be a bit different had they included some nice padding inside the dock to protect the Switch from rubbing against it.
Lycon Xero the charging grip has a pretty big battery and a USB a to c cable (5$) the dock comes with a power brick (30$, and its one of the cheapest for the power output), an HDMI cable (10$) so...
MasterPiPoNL I was CONSIDERING buying an xbox controler for PC/emulation but nope. Gonna buy a pro controler and savor it while saving up for a switch. I mean, getting it at launch is a hassle for any console cause of the fresh realese demand.
But now seeing the dock pick down I can see this being upgraded to like 4K and up scale with maybe a software update and new dock hardware very nice keeping their options open I like it
@Someone Someone's salty... this is just the dock; of course it has not much technology. It doesn't need it. A raspberry pi is a general purpose computer. But if you compare the actual Switch to the raspberry pi... does the rpi have accelerometer? Gyro? Vibration? An IR sensor? NFC touchpad? A touch screen? Of course all these are available as add-ons, but the Switch has them all already.
@Someone OK, I agree, the dock is overpriced. But don't forget that it is a lot bigger and made of plastic, which is made from finite resources. And the cost of designing it, and the entire switch to fit perfectly, is factored into the price as well.
I just recently bought a sort of replacement dock that also happens to double as a portable stand (you can use the USB C to plug in a GC Adapter), and I feel a little less bad I payed almost 14US$ for it. I looked this up so I could open it up and pass the mother chip over, and it might be worth it. Nice tutorial.
Thanks for posting. I was curious about the spring mechanism, since I think it's weird how easily the switch mates to the usb-c in the dock. Not only does it aim well, but it also seems like it takes very little force to actually get the connector in the socket. This helped but I'm still a little confused as to why it just slides in so easily...
cloudsRniceC0M3 the CPU doesn't run at 100 percent when undocked, so the dock should technically put the CPU at 100 percent or overclock the system for docked gameplay.
cloudsRniceC0M3 I feel like it would be easier to make a better tablet and sell it without joy- cons and or a dock as an upgrade instead an upgraded dock.
Big thanks for sharing this. Mine got hit by lightning and is dead before ordering the board wanted to know if there was anything else that could be fried. You helped save a dock from the landfill. For those who want to fix their dock also FYI Nintendo Switch HDMI Dock Motherboard = $13.49
Nintendo did an awesome job this time! People don't look at you funny when you say you're goin' home to play with your Switch! Now they just need to add the Virtual Console because we wantssses it!
Can't wait to make the dock pocket-sized for travel use! ;) Also for those complaining about the price, the $90 nets you one HDMI cable and an A/C adapter as well, not just this dock.
Just as I expected. It is not just a piece of plastic that people assume or make it up to be. Already debated this before this even comes out. And your tear down just nail it for my point last time
I got the nintendo swich with zelda! My brother didnt preorder it even He waited at gamestop and they were so close to sellling out. Thanks spawn wave for making such great videos and helping me be patient for the switch
Now I want to make myself a dock mini Just take the motherboard circuit, craft a nice little casing and take it with you anywhere. Much less cumbersome than the whole dock to bring to a friend's house.
Is the front panel of this basically just a hollow/solid piece of plastic? If so, just lop off the thing with a cutting tool, leaving enough of a lip to let the USB be lined up properly, and you've solved any screen-scratching problems.
Your videos are awesome dude, we get to explore the inner workings together and judge for ourselves if hardware matches up with its RRP. Definitely had to hit that subscribe.
The Dock comes with a Power adapter and an hdmi cable. The cost of making the dock is arround 49 dollars each and a usb c power adapter for an ipad costs 30 dollars so the price of 90 dollars actually makes sense.
Yep my bad $5 for the board $2 for the case $2 for the HDMI and $5 for the charger = $15 (rounded) / $90 - $15 = $75 / 85% profit. I am perfectly happy that Nintendo charges whatever they want for their products. I think it says a lot about a tech company!
eh, it actually has more ports 2 usb 2.0 usb 3.0 and power in and 20 dollars gets you less. 90 bucks may cost a bunch but there isn't many USB c to those ports. So it's a unique purpose for unique use case scenarios. Those things can be pricey, everything else is unattractive looking as well and they aren't docks.
the charger is 30$. in fact ninty's charger is one if the cheapest out there for that much wattage, not including proprietary qualcom quick charge. plus quality hdmi costs around 10$. plus a USB hub that fully powers all 3 ports plus a usb c device itself? that does not exist...
Consider this; 2 examples of my pricing scheme. 1. $14 for a USB-C to HDMI/DVI/VGA - tinyurl.com/zqfhk7g 2. $35 for a USB-C Hub, USB-C to HDMI USB 3.0 Port and USB-C/3.1 G2 Recharging - tinyurl.com/zdpsoml These examples give you a baseline for the average cost of these components. To my point is Apple that manufactures the same device as the $35 hub they sell it for $50 still $40 cheaper than Nintendo.
In the future, I could see a 4K Dock (or a device that fits the compartment that plug into the USB-C). Furthermore, I could see them doing a "Gear VR styled" VR device where the tablet slots into the VR unit. The VR unit would have extra batteries (in the back, to counterweight the Switch in front), and with the batteries, run in full power mode, but using the 720p screen, thus being able to run better frame rates, which is the thing VR NEEDS to have. You already have a pair of motion control enabled controllers with HD rumble! It would set up Nintendo as having the lowest cost VR entry of all the three console makers!
I would 3d print a new dock without the faceplate and maybe line up circuit board above and behind the docking mechanism; lastly, make the dock a half triangle instead of a giant square. I see countless ways to make it way cooler and less bulky
The spring might help with guiding the switch into play so the usb-c port doesnt get bent if the switch is put in wrong. Also nice that there isnt much for the board. I am willing to bet people will take them apart and 3d print a smaller box with just a usb-c to usb-c cable port
They need to 1.Make the dock run 1080p on all games 2. make it so that it has buttons and calibration for joycons and pro controllers. 3. Make it solid so that it's not just some plastic box but a console. 4. add lights like the wii and wii u had
I took all the electronics out of my dock because the dock was scratching my Switch and because I couldn't dock the Switch with its case on. Thank you for your help.
Interesting that they left exposed, and even labeled, the programming interface (SWDIO, SWCLK) to the ST microcontroller which seems to be running everything. (I can't exactly see the part number.) That means you could reprogram it with any ST programmer, which you can get very cheap.
Some reports indicate damage on the Switch screen when docking and undocking numerous times. Seeing the dock apart, I can see what may have caused the abrasion. Perhaps a stick-on thin felt or similar can be attached to the dock to minimize, if not eliminate, the abrasion to the nice Switch screen.
So there isn't a fan inside? How does the overclocking work, then? Does it not need to add additional cooling? Is it just a power issue? Lowering the video output to 720p undocked could possibly just be a power-saving method if that's the case.
I know I'm a whole year late but after watching this I thought about taking apart my dock and using all the internals and some different parts to make a smaller/more compact dock that won't brick the console or scratch it. Is it worth it?
hadn't thought about that. probably not? my switch's arriving on Thursday so I guess my safest bet is a glass one. what about the adhesive on it though? that might prove to be an issue.
+stalin did nothing wrong I am no expert on this, so I recommend checking other outlets. One of my preferred outlets is "I am Blunty" RUclips channel. Check it out when you have the time and good luck!
Wonder if this is why Nintendo stopped selling them apart, people realized they were all plastic and no electronics and they pulled them back. Haven't seen docks for sale aside from maybe on their own store?
Is the back swinging door thing of the dock supposed to be kind of loose? Just wondering cuz mine is, and I’m weird about imperfections. I freaked when my 3ds screen was seeming extra moveable lmao.
Hey man, you should've put some padding inside the dock when you opened it. The screen can scratch pretty easily against those plastic rails inside the dock. That's what I would do at the very least. Blunty showed how his Switch's screen is scratched after only one day of use because of this.
a usb to hdmi converter for a compatible droid device is like $60 and that plus a usb 3.0/2.0 combo hub... plus plastic... might make sense for the price tag
Is there a sensor in the spring around the USB-C to tell the board a switch is docked? If is it literally only there to help protect the connector? I'm thinking about 3D printing an improved dock. Trying to determine the requirements.
I've heard that you can't use other USB-C to HDMI cords with the Switch. Do you think the dock has a "handshake" that lets the Switch use their HDMI output? Do you think someone will come up with a workaround at some point? 90 bucks for a dock seems expensive.
Tony Ortiz USB C to HDMI is handled by the dock circutry in the switch's case. and it isn't cheap... the dock cones with a power brick and hdmi cable though, and there isn't a charger that can output the dock's power intake thats cheaper than the nintendo one.
Well whenever I get my switch, I'm planing to add a bit of craft foam to the side where the screen is. Since there are reports of the dock scratching the outer part of the screen on the switch
Very clean video! I do wish you would've popped the USB C out. The one with the spring mechanism. I'm planning on making a new case so my screen doesn't get rub burn 😂
Do you have to remove the board to take it fully apart, also what is your opinion on screen scratching ? I was planning on taking apart to put something none abrasive on the rails.
I love your Theme song! when i first came across your channel and heard it it stuck with me, reminded me of Metroid for some reason... very cool, who made your theme song?
Proof that the switch is a Handheld with a HDMI connector port. Also Gamestop gives you more trade in credit for this dock than for a JoyCon controller.
That circuit board is pretty amazing, you're putting a USB 3.0, two USB 2.0's, HDMI and Power all though the USB Type C port on the bottom of the switch tablet. All in a 3x3 circuit board. That's some cutting edge technology.
Not entirely sure about removing the ribbon on this. It just snaps in, right? Is it safe to pull on the ribbon itself? I was trying to pry at the connector with a little screwdriver, but didn't get anywhere.
Do you think you can add some padding inside the dock to prevent it from scratching the screen. There are some reports mentioning the issue of the dock scratching the screen of the switch.
So I read online that the Nintendo Switch Dock has a built-in fan to help cool the system. I must have missed it in this video because I did not see it. Is it in there?
I'm kind of disappointed at Nintendo not getting with Nvidia for GDC booth. This would have been the perfect time to show off the Switch and give details. But the 1080TI was the big boy there. I am not going to jump on that yet Going to see what's up with the rest of AMD's line up. Intel and Nvidia better drop prices or they are screwed if this Power to Price keeps up. OH BTW yeah I am loving the Switch.
I'm gonna extract the electronics out of the dock and make a custom dock from mahogany and some other high quality wood and add some comfy padding for the screen
It just doesn't make sense to me that a usb 3.0, two usb 2.0's, hdmi, and power can all communicate with the system through one usb type c connection on the bottom of the tablet, all at the same time. USB C seems to be pretty amazing
Guys, the $90 works out:

Im a big ass nerd he did say the rest, smartass
MulletEagle *an hdmi
zech i bet you used a calculator for that
looks like a bag of potato chips. 25 percent product and the other 75 is emptiness. lol
90% plastic
Jose Luis Torrente it already made 100% no space for you sorry
Sounds like my life fr fr
I called that spring mechanism on Reddit and people told me I was wrong look whose laughing now
Did you go back on reddit to see what people are saying about it now?
They probably won't admit they're wrong but it would still be funny to see they're expressions. Lol
ayy i saw you on reddit, i was 50/50 (get it)
Yeah r/Nintendo switch is a harsh place
It's a good design, not sure why they would be mad about it.
I wonder if you could connect a USB-C female to male on the dock to the switch so that you can see it on the tv without docking it.
Ah $90 and they couldn't afford to put some felt inside to stop the screen getting scratched.
CSmithyPx yeah complete bs
CSmithyPx they can’t provide us with free screen protectors
I know right!
@@frain_breeze1707 You talkin' to me?
If you’re careful you won’t scratch the screen.

MasterPiPoNL
Whoops I meant pro controler. Whose going to buy a charging grip anyways... joycons last 20 hours.
True and the pro controller is so amazing :D Loving it while playing Zelda. RIP Life
MasterPiPoNL
I was CONSIDERING buying an xbox controler for PC/emulation but nope. Gonna buy a pro controler and savor it while saving up for a switch.
I mean, getting it at launch is a hassle for any console cause of the fresh realese demand.
6:33 to 7:00 he was fighting off them Nintendo ninjas
The nuke bros. Lmao he probably did
Ha nice, I was actually grounding myself and then taking pictures of the board. Meant to cut it out but I missed it.
lol yeah i was like "welp! Nintendo ninjas just got him :(" XD
But now seeing the dock pick down I can see this being upgraded to like 4K and up scale with maybe a software update and new dock hardware very nice keeping their options open I like it
$90 for this? It looks like that $4 PC that was all the rage a year or two ago.
Ghost81 Raspberry pi?
@Someone Someone's salty... this is just the dock; of course it has not much technology. It doesn't need it. A raspberry pi is a general purpose computer. This video was a great reference since I just had to disassemble the dock to get a ROCK out of the port.
You taking apart the Switch & the dock was a very educational moment for me. It was cool to watch.
Did it end up frying your switch? I heard the third party docks have different voltages that can potentially fry your switch.
You know you are a nerd when you are up at 2:30am and watch this just because you love tech.
Thanks for posting. I was curious about the spring mechanism, since I think it's weird how easily the switch mates to the usb-c in the dock. Not only does it aim well, but it also seems like it takes very little force to actually get the connector in the socket. My question is: could nintendo put more stuff in it to up the performance?
Or would it just be wasted effort?
I was wondering the same thing, looks like a lot of room
cloudsRniceC0M3 it's to allow you to store drugs when you're in the business
cloudsRniceC0M3 the CPU doesn't run at 100 percent when undocked, so the dock should technically put the CPU at 100 percent or overclock the system for docked gameplay.
cloudsRniceC0M3 I feel like it would be easier to make a better tablet and sell it without joy- cons and or a dock as an upgrade instead an upgraded dock.
It could run the OS when docked... though it would need some serious magic for when you undock it (in case it's seamless).
Thanks for doing this I was looking at buying one and breaking it down to make my own smaller "travel" version lol
Thank you of this video, having proper dissembled view helps planning any modifications
9:15 "I hope you guys are having fun with the Switch today" IF I HAD ONE!
Gaspoo Well mine didn't get delivered till like 5pm today, and everyone had to try it so.....kinda lame first day.
lol 90 $ for a dock the price already was disappointing but after seeing the vid omg is this so over priced.
Randiel Rodriguez it is but it comes with the console
Randiel Rodriguez if it's proprietary, it's gonna be over priced. every time.
90$ with an adapter and hdmi cable, 50$ most likely best price for dock alone
yep they have some anti-piracy with the conversion to HDMI.
It's $60 on Nintendo's online store. store.nintendo.com/ng3/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?productId=prod840594
I wanted to see this more than the Switch. Super useful, thanks!
Spawn wave a tip. When filming trace the area covered by the camera with a tape or a marker so whatever you do is covered.
I spent 9 minutes of my life watching a dude open a toaster....
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Big thanks for sharing this. Mine got hit by lightning and is dead before ordering the board wanted to know if there was anything else that could be fried. You helped save a dock from the landfill. For those who want to fix their dock also FYI Nintendo Switch HDMI Dock Motherboard = $13.49
Nintendo did an awesome job this time! People don't look at you funny when you say you're goin' home to play with your Switch! Now they just need to add the Virtual Console because we wantssses it!
amazing keeping my entertainment going this Friday. Wish I had the balls to take apart a Nintendo switch myself glad you're doing it for us
Can't wait to make the dock pocket-sized for travel use! ;)
Also for those complaining about the price, the $90 nets you one HDMI cable and an A/C adapter as well, not just this dock.
Sorry but this still sounds stupid
It's like they shoved a half assed raspberry pi into some plastic. This thing should be no more than $35.
Since the switch can charge by itself with a cable undocked, all that is in the dock is a usb hub, and the USB C to HDMI converter/passthrough.
The Switch launch seems like the first ever Consumer Electronics Disassembly Olympics.
Spawn Wave is definitely best in class.
Just as I expected. It is not just a piece of plastic that people assume or make it up to be. Already debated this before this even comes out. And your tear down just nail it for my point last time
I have the same tri wing screwdriver. Works really well and doesnt strip
I got the nintendo swich with zelda! My brother didnt preorder it even He waited at gamestop and they were so close to sellling out. Thanks spawn wave for making such great videos and helping me be patient for the switch
Now I want to make myself a dock mini
Just take the motherboard circuit, craft a nice little casing and take it with you anywhere. Much less cumbersome than the whole dock to bring to a friend's house.
Thanks a lot for the video! It helped me open my dock to clean it up after small ants decided to build nests in there. :)
The spring mecanism is actually really well thought, they are there to act like a guide to the switch. so that you do not damage the port!
90$ for a mostly empty plastic box with an USB/HDMI hub inside. Nintendo is fucking kidding us.
Is the front panel of this basically just a hollow/solid piece of plastic? If so, just lop off the thing with a cutting tool, leaving enough of a lip to let the USB be lined up properly, and you've solved any screen-scratching problems.
I am surprised to see that theres nothing in the dock and I can now create my own
I'm planning on doing a custom paint job of the dock and console, so this was helpful
Thanks for the tear down, and good job with the video editing speed up with the music.
as a mechanical engineer i trully appreciates the build quality of the switch (y) (y) (y)
***** yes I do ; ) ^_^

$90 for a $5 piece of equipment. Amazing how proud Nintendo is of their shit.
Dib Siverak it comes with a charger and hdmi cable.

Finally what i was looking for
I took all the electronics out of my dock because the dock was scratching my Switch and because I couldn't dock the Switch with its case on. Thank you for your help.

"Nintendo will make a dock with an external graphics card and...4K!"
Well, I don't know guys. I think that will remain a dream after watching this.
Maybe
Thank you! Now i can custom my switch dock
Nice very neat SW.
Third party dock I will be buying
Some reports indicate damage on the Switch screen when docking and undocking numerous times. Seeing the dock apart, I can see what may have caused the abrasion. Perhaps a stick-on thin felt or similar can be attached to the dock to minimize, if not eliminate, the abrasion to the nice Switch screen.
Danny G. That's what I was thinking. I ordered a glass screen protector but putting thin felt might not be a bad idea for secondary protection.
So there isn't a fan inside? How does the overclocking work, then? Does it not need to add additional cooling? Is it just a power issue?
Lowering the video output to 720p undocked could possibly just be a power-saving method if that's the case.
well, now I kinda understand the price.. kinda.
Can't believe how expensive all this Switch stuff is when you take it apart, looks pretty underwhelming
I know I'm a whole year late but after watching this I thought about taking apart my dock and using all the internals and some different parts to make a smaller/more compact dock that won't brick the console or scratch it. Is it worth it?
In the right hands, this could lead to cool custom docks using original hardware.
Thank You for this awesome video nothing really in front of the dock so I snapped it off switch scratch screen fix!! ;D
Apparently, the dock can scratch your beautiful switch screen overtime or immediately. I definitely recommend getting a screen protector!
Apparently the heat from the Switch/dock can warp and bubble screen protectors. Lovely.
+stalin did nothing wrong Including the glass types?
hadn't thought about that. probably not? my switch's arriving on Thursday so I guess my safest bet is a glass one. what about the adhesive on it though? that might prove to be an issue.
+stalin did nothing wrong I am no expert on this, so I recommend checking other outlets. One of my preferred outlets is "I am Blunty" RUclips channel. Check it out when you have the time and good luck!
Yeah, he was the one that brought it to my attention. Hopefully he can figure something out. :)
Is that a regular HDMI port or the new one that supports very high res?
What's the name of the music that's playing when you tear down and reassemble the dock? It's trippy as hell!
So theoretically if you just got a USB-C to HDMI adapter and just ran a cord straight from the console to the TV, it would be a DIY dock?
SwaanieRaan No it doesn't work
Hey man, you should've put some padding inside the dock when you opened it. The screen can scratch pretty easily against those plastic rails inside the dock.
That's what I would do at the very least.
Blunty showed how his Switch's screen is scratched after only one day of use because of this.
AbdallahSmash026#1Fan
Plastic screen that rubs against the inside of plastic dock without any protection sucks.
AbdallahSmash026#1Fan I don't like him either but he was one of the first people to report about this issue and show the proof with the video
thanks for show this.. so I can cut front of dock..
thank you for your hardwork!
So, considering what the dock is, couldn't you modify it into a smaller box with the same hardware?
I love the fate music
I really hope someone 3d prints a new dock shell with new LED. Could have some really cool logos that glow, maybe a triforce one who knows.
It is possible the Switch Dock could come with a power supply and HDMI cable. That would help justify the $80 price tag a good bit.
BaddMatt It does
a usb to hdmi converter for a compatible droid device is like $60 and that plus a usb 3.0/2.0 combo hub... plus plastic... might make sense for the price tag

linkofdoom24 I agree. or just get a tempered glass screen protector. :)
Tony12097 I am planing to get a tempered glass screen protector also, but I feel like the foam should help against any scratches
OMG! Nintendo uses secret Apollo (ancient greek god) technology on that tiny PCB. Kudos to Ninty.
Theoretically; could you safely drill holes in the back/front, NEXT to the plugs to improve airflow?
I love your Theme song! when i first came across your channel and heard it it stuck with me, reminded me of Metroid for some reason... very cool, who made your theme song?
Proof that the switch is a Handheld with a HDMI connector port. Also Gamestop gives you more trade in credit for this dock than for a JoyCon controller.
$90 for that cheap crap!? lol, I bet some 3rd party will make one for $20.
Carl Freemerman and destroy your switch
@@jklalskjdjhg7227 not if you use nintendo original wiring
Christopher Portillo well is wont be $20
I bet the third party one will actually work too unlike 75% of people’s who came broken your lucky if the one that comes in the box works for you
That circuit board is pretty amazing, you're putting a USB 3.0, two USB 2.0's, HDMI and Power all though the USB Type C port on the bottom of the switch tablet. All in a 3x3 circuit board. That's some cutting edge technology.
Thanks!
“Put it back together real quick” 😂
Thanks for the video!!! You rock!
Dude this was very informative, thanks!
The joycons are going to be very interesting
I'm kind of disappointed at Nintendo not getting with Nvidia for GDC booth. This would have been the perfect time to show off the Switch and give details. But the 1080TI was the big boy there. I am not going to jump on that yet Going to see what's up with the rest of AMD's line up. Intel and Nvidia better drop prices or they are screwed if this Power to Price keeps up. OH BTW yeah I am loving the Switch.
I'm gonna extract the electronics out of the dock and make a custom dock from mahogany and some other high quality wood and add some comfy padding for the screen
do you think nintendo is simply using mhl with the dock and upscale is handyed by the switch or does the board have upscaler?
Wait I thought Nintendo said that there was supposed to be an extra fan for cooling that was inside the dock?
It just doesn't make sense to me that a usb 3.0, two usb 2.0's, hdmi, and power can all communicate with the system through one usb type c connection on the bottom of the tablet, all at the same time. USB C seems to be pretty amazing
Also I thought matherbords were made of wood not plastic
Be careful when docking and un-docking, Blunty managed to scratch his screen on the guide pads in the dock it seams.
