I would like to thank my Patrons for supporting me: Low-lying Clouds, Christian Simon, Mikael Mäkitalo, Erik Revier, mitchelld desroches, corey harkins, Matt Hansen and Marianne Dijkshoorn.
Red Barchetta is one of Rush's most beautiful songs. The melody just flows perfectly with the beat and the lyrics. It is pure poetry! After listening to it for 40 years, I still can't stop air drumming to it. The song is flawless.
The funny thing about Rush is people think they are super nerdy...they are, but what people dont realize is they also rock really hard, all their riffs are fucking so meaty, not to mention neil and geddy
It's great to see your love and admiration for this band grow and develop. Queen will always be your favorite band, as they should be. You grew up with them. They provided the soundtrack to your life. But its obvious Rush is having an impact on you as discover the beauty and brilliance of this band. Welcome to the Rush family.
Been a Rush fan since 1981. I was a 16 year old kid with alot of life ahead. Now I am almost 53 and Rush has been there for all of the ups and downs in between. They will always be the soundtrack of my life. Sad to see they are done more than likely.
queen is a definite when looking at great groups, but for me Rush still has the edge for me. One of the only bands where you can get caught up in a song or instrumental that lasts over 10 mins & have it fly by because your so caught up in the sounds, time changes, tempo etc. and then go wow 10 mins just flew by and it felt more like 2 or 3 mins.
I liked what you said about Red Barchetta being the "perfect embodiment" of describing RUSH..I always thought "Freewill" was the song that if you wanted a good understanding of RUSH..that would be the song...but Red Barchetta is a solid choice for that embodiment you spoke of..I'd be onboard with that..no problem
This was the second Rush song I ever heard---following Tom Sawyer, which I was already mightily impressed by---and it basically made me a permanent Rush fan. Just a perfect rock song from three exceptionally talented musicians...
@@caravann26 and why is he the most underrated bass player ever? Sting, JPJ, Entwistle, Flea....I'll take Geddy over them any day. The guy is ridiculous.
A underestimated word, but if you search for only one. "Tight" would come to mind. But yea 1 word doesn't do them justice. Thanks Ruben!. Loved watching your reaction.
Don't forget the lyrical genius too. So often you'll be listening along and go "Wow. What an incredible phrase/verse. I cannot believe such poetry is in a rock song." Such is the brilliance of Neil Peart.
I have a Rush lunchbox I take to work. The guys love it , women respond in one of two ways- horror or my husband would love that. My wife and sister in law hate rush , I think they are jealous of Geddies hair and high notes.
Saw my first Rush concert in 1979 - the permanent waves tour - at the age of 12 having convinced my dad to take me and a friend to it. Not really his thing, so props to my dad! Heard and bought my first Rush album, Hemispheres, a year or two before, so yeah, starting my 5th decade of listening to Rush now. Listened to everything they've done over the years, and while my favorites will always be the old stuff, some of their newer songs were also very enjoyable.
My favorite band since 1984, when I was introduced to your songs by a friend. Fans will miss out on new songs, but they did very good songs and we can enjoy them. I am Brazilian. Thanks for the video. Continue on this journey
from the age of 14 to 46 I have never missed a concert and was lucky enough to see the R40 tour. This band has been a soundtrack to my life. The way they create music has been the high point for me year after year. The lyrics, structure and performance of their music is just amazing. Three of the brightest and most dedicated musicians in all of the world on one stage is an amazing thing to experience.
When I was about 16 and spent a whole summer learning many rush songs and Red Barchetta was one of my favorite songs. This was way before internet so I learned these by ear.
Neil Peart who wrote the lyrics for most of the Rush songs read a short story in a magazine about a man violating the motor laws and driving a car. That short story became red barchetta. Years later the author of the story was told by a friend who was also a rush fan that his short story had been used as the basis of the song and the author was totally flabbergasted by this. He ended up meeting Neil Peart and going on a motorbike ride with him. Neil often rides his motorbike between Rush gigs. The Rush documentary described earlier is really interesting because it gives you insights into how the three band members came together but also that their underlying goal has always been to try to figure out how to make three guys sound like a full orchestra. You'll see that in a lot of their albums they're progressively growing more and more complex with their music as they add new instruments into the mix. I've been listening to Rush since the 1980s when I heard them at a concert in California. I think what appeals to a lot of Rush fans is not only the musicianship but the lyrics. The lyrics speak to a lot of science fiction fans out there and people who feel like they are at the edges of society sometimes (Suburbs is a good example of this). And I think as geek culture has become more center stage in society a lot of that sense of alienation has gone away and we see new generations of people coming to appreciate Rush in a variety of different ways. Songs like Xanadu are interesting because they they have this literary sense to them. They're obviously talking about coleridge's poem kubla khan and that's the basis for the song. Songs like YYZ or a little bit more esoteric until you realize the YYZ are the three-letter call letters for the Toronto airport. Songs like Tom Sawyer and red barchetta from the moving pictures album really tap into that sense of alienation but also into people's love of science fiction. The song Countdown was used as a crew wake up song on one of the Columbia shuttle missions. They incorporated some of the crew cabin comments from John Young and Robert Crippen's first shuttle launched into the the music of the song. So you can see how the music that engineers and geeks have loved for the past 30 some-odd years has found its way into different aspects of society and different historical events.
Queen was one of my favorite bands growing up too. Saw them 6 times including 1982 Live Killers Tour which blew me away! Both Rush and Queen were dynamite live!
Red Barchetta is probably in my top 10 for Rush. Not only is it perfectly composed, I can't think of another song where the actual instruments sound more like the subject material of the lyrics. Screeching tires, soaring engine, hard shifts, drifting, the exhilaration....it's all conveyed by the music alone.
It doesn't matter that you've only recently discovered Rush, at least you found them. I actually envy your luck in finding them now, at this point in your life. I wish I was just discovering them now so I can hear all their incredible music for the first time again. If you're looking for more great Progressive rock bands to listen to, and just to enjoy, not necessarily "react" to, you might want to give bands like Genesis a try, starting from their beginnings. Also bands like Pink Floyd of course, King Crimson, Yes, even Saga and more recently, Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree among others I'm sure I'm forgetting right now. Music is an important part of life, never stop listening. Much happiness and good health to you.
Ruben, I highly recommend watching the rush movie/documentary "beyond a lighted stage". You will gain a wonderful glimpse of their history, their fans and what bands they were influenced by and who they influenced. It's a wonderful movie
I fully understand the feeling of loss when an immersive story like Red Barchetta comes to an end. i'm right there with you, and I've been listening to that song for over 30 years. I always wanted a second chapter of the story.
I love Red Barchetta. Thanks for reviewing it. Another song I really got into on the same Moving Pictures album is The Camera Eye - about picturing cityscapes. I like how it switches from keyboard to driving rhythmic guitar riffs and so on. Check it out if you haven't already.
Love seeing you react to Rush. They've got a lot of songs, and I hope you realize that you can react to more than 1 every few weeks, as that will be good for your soul as well :)
I am a fan and I have seen them 7 times live. The last time was on their Snakes and Arrows tour. I have seen too many bands declining in their skills, but Rush had improved every time in concert. I am talking early 1980's onward. They never sat on their old hits and milked them, but soldiered on with vim and vigor! What a testament to their skill and fortitude as artists and musicians. If they ever play near me again, I will be in line to buy a ticket to their show!
Although The Camera Eye from Moving Pictures was not my introduction to Rush, it was the track that made me a convert and life-long dedicated fan. It was all about the composition. It was one of the longest tracks I'd ever heard at that point in my life, but it was so well structured and so "visual" that I closed my eyes to witness what felt like a two-part film play out in my head as I hung on every digital twerp, every key stroke, and every inspired chord that painted the grandness of Manhattan and London. The growl of Geddy's bass tone, the subtle but propelling kinetic energy of Lifeson's 12-string, and then - what I still consider to be one of his most grandiose guitar solos, patiently nuanced and evoking Spanish flourishes and wails that mimicked towering monolithic high-rises, only to conclude with the sense of "rush" from the busy city streets. It was a completely submissive experience exploding with multi-dimensional sensory overload. I picked up the bass guitar soon after I discovered the band and began my introduction to music performance by emulating Ged's intro to this track. My life would forever change. And, to this day, The Camera Eye sounds and emotes the same feelings I had as an awe-struck 14 year old. It's worth a spin.
That was well said. I recently rediscoverrd the Camera Eye and remembered how much a 16 year old me liked it, but now having been a musician for 16 years since i appreciate it so much more. It may be the sleeper best rush song of all time.
Oh yeah, finally someone else who gets it! In high school in 83 I would put on my dad's good headphones [they were big, cushioned, very hifi] , his Beethoven headphones were best available back then. I would listen to the whole album from start to finish, loved every song, but witch hunt and camera eye were very special indeed. I could literally see a light rain from a leaden sky while I listened, every note was mapped out in my mind, any deviation would be noticed instantly, as I'm sure you could. Thanks for your post man, it made my day bro.
This is played so tight. Doesn't sound a complicated song if you "Rush" through it but really listen, as you know, and it's a work of art. Top quality music made to look and sound effortless. :) Great reaction man.
I am both a huge fan of Queen and of Rush as well. You are correct, they are very very different with the type of rock they play and how they approach their music. I have seen both bands live. I saw Rush during their 2112 concert tour and Queen in Paris for what was their Night at the Opera tour but because they were recording the concert for what would become their Live Killers album, the concert as actually called the Live Killers concert. Both bands are really great live bands but Rush was missing one key ingredient that Queen had...Freddie Mercury. This was back in his long hair and lots of spandex outfits days but Freddie commanded the attention of the audience like no other lead singer/front man could ever do or will ever do. It is what separated Queen from all other bands and that includes Rush. The guys in Rush are technical geniuses but so were Freddie, Brian, Roger and John. Add Freddie's charisma and nothing can beat them.
I envy the fact that you get to discover this epic band. I remember what it was like. I got into Rush on the Moving Pictures album. That meant that I had 7 of their best albums to discover myself. What fun it was. After that it was a bit of a drag because I had to wait years for a new record instead of weeks. No regrets.
Still remember the first time I heard this album, it was at a Marillion concert in Barcelona, Steve Hogarth had just joined the band. While we waited for the band to come out they played the whole Moving Pictures album two or three times over. I was blown away! I had no idea it was Rush.
Loved your reaction to 'Red Barchetta' - Ruben and your "love letter" to Rush. Has any band ever created such a fantastic song about... a car?! (Lol - it's more than that ofc). Been a Rush fan since 1989 (more or less). I was surprised by your reaction to 2112. For many Rush fans it is one of the greatest Rush albums - especially Overture and the Temples of Syrinx. You seemed either tired or overwhelmed - not sure what it was. You mentioned needing a vacation :) Did you listen to it again? I think Rush are indeed as close to perfect as it gets - but they have their weaknesses, so to speak (and I say this with the utmost respect ofc). They had some albums which were mediocre and Geddy's vocals are not everyone's cup of tea (and he is sometimes off - easy to understand when he has to reach those uber high notes after decades of singing). Still - they are geniuses - each in their own right. Once again - I join my fellow Rush fans in asking for a "Hemispheres" reaction - THAT album is my favorite - it's as perfect as a musical album gets imho. You already did a reaction video to La Villa Strangiato (think it was even your first ever Rush reaction video - which makes it the first Rush song you ever listened to)! So you know what to expect - Hemispheres is a work of musical art! Also - my favorite score from their 'Signals' album - 'The Weapon' (live version is funny and awesome as hell - /watch?v=11mYrDIDDHE) and my favorite song from 'Grace Under Pressure' - 'The Body Electric'. Hope you react to those soon. All the best mate.
I don't care what people say about Geddy's voice. I love it! :D I'm a new Rush fan, but listened to every of their albums already. They are simply amazing.
Love seeing your face as you listen ... you seem to take such pleasure in it. I'm one of the 'rare' female Rush fans - been listening since 1978. Sure am going to miss them. It's fun to see new people learning about The Canadian Power Trio.
Every time you do a Rush reaction, I have to watch it at least twice. Once I am watching the video and your reaction and twice to concentrate on your reaction. I have been a Rush fan since at least !978 ( age me there a little). When you put together 3 absolute musical geniuses, what you get out is absolutely genius. Have never considered them prog. To me this is what rock is supposed to be. Keep listening to them and you will be "enlightened" to what music is meant to be.
An out-f*cking-standing choice of a great Rush cut that doesn't get it's just due. (Pardon my language... couldn't help it) I get amazed at these guys and other artists that make very complex playing look so effortless... assholes lol. I will give a bit of advice though... don't pose the question of "the best" band or individual with their respective instruments. That's a debate that you will NEVER win with yourself, much less anyone else lol. Just simplify it to whether you like it or not. You'll save yourself an anerysm or two lol...
Last band I was introduced to as for the big names never been the same since lol one reason why I play the drums their music takes you on a journey they are ,all 3 virtuosos on their instruments
Superb choice of song and an excellent representation of the classic Rush sound. Moving Pictures is considered by many to be Rush's best album, although their discography is so huge, you could spend a lifetime discussing that. I actually loved their 80's synth stuff. particularly Signals, my most favourite album by Rush, followed closely by A Farewell To Kings.
Such great insight. I love your reactions and honest opinions and genuine love for music. I am one of those who have been a Rush fan since my preteen years and now almost 50. As a drummer I have always held Neil Peart above all as such a great drummer and lyricist!
One of my all time favorites. Best Rush album by far. Love them Canucks for producing such genius. Saw them in Vegas at MGM grand hotel [R40 tour] awesome show. Ran for over 2hrs.with one short piss break.lol.even the coolest rockers gotta piss sometimes dude, all 50k of us go rgave them instantly
When I need a story I want it from Neil Peart. One of my top 5 RUSH songs. RIP Neil Neil was the GOAT! At one of their concerts I saw they had a video of this playing behind the band.
I think the best way to get your Rush fix is to start with their self titled first album, then Fly By Night and Caress of Steel, on up to Hold Your Fire , and you can hear them evolve with every album. I swear, just by listening, you could lay the albums out in the correct order by hearing the advancements in their musicianship, their writing, their sound... And all that other stuff that comes along with being a great band that never grew tired of writing and performing. Thats one of the reasons they were able to keep doing it for 40 years. They kept moving forward and kept it interesting. And wrote songs like Red Barchetta that they could play every night for 30 years without it getting old. But Im glad you discovered this band. Everyone who enjoys music as music should tune in to Rush. It wouldn't hurt to throw a little Slayer in there too. Rock on, sir.
I don't know if you've ever listen to Emerson,Lake and Palmer but they're another power trio from the 70's with amazing talent..And of course you can't go wrong with anything from Rush..
gee,to go back in time and hear subdivisions, marathon and big money again for the first time!...ruben, youre a lucky manwith so much on the horizon...buckle up, my friend....theres no putting the lid back on this jar!!! enjoy
Queen is an amazing band adept at brilliant orchestration. You did well to have them as your fav. RUSH is quite different. Rush tells a LOOOoooNG story through their music. There is a thread that moves through the lyrics. Always questioning, what is the value of technology, how do we interface, What do we jettison as humans as we move forward? I hope you will revisit and always keep listening. Cheers!
Oh yeah, Rush!! My first concert at 15, I just missed seeing this live, I was at the Permanent Waves tour, check out the Natural Science live video from the Test for Echo tour sometime, it kicks ass
You totally understand RUSH. My favorite band since 1980 when I first heard them. I feel for their career like you felt for this song. I feel like I'm STILL getting into it even after all these years. They are that good. And for it to end...bummer like you said. Please keep listening and reacting to them. Your reactions are awesome.
This has been one of my favorite Rush songs since I started listening as a kid. I discovered Rush in 1979 at six years old (I was a huge KISS fan, with posters and everything, until the local DJ on the radio talked about seeing this band Rush with KISS a couple years ago and played "The Trees" and I've been a fan ever since) and the Moving Pictures record came out just a couple years later. My favorite records have always been the ones where they use the keyboards and bass petals and such as "shading". Right after the solo (from 5:33 to 5:45) you can hear them playing the earlier riff but Neil is playing more aggressively and there is a clear, high sustained pedal note sort of keeping the tension elevated and moving, that's the kind of stuff I love. They build it up and then bring it down at the "escape" part of the song which is kind of the whole "riding off into the sunset" ending.
Love your channel! It's been a joy to watch you become a Rush fan. Please do "Distant Early Warning", it's one of my favorites from their late 80's synth era.
It’s like this.you either love em or you hate em’. Welcome to the club. They are something special. Check out between the wheels of grace under pressure (also on the snakes and arrow live concert). One of my favorites.
I would like to thank my Patrons for supporting me:

"A Band with No Weaknesses" That may be a great way to capture the essence of Rush
Alex wearing a red blazer = weakness
tallguyshortgirl BS! He looked great in that. Now the crotch bulge in kimonos...naaaaa.
tallguyshortgirl he was known for wearing red jackets in the early 80s
*You can't go wrong with RUSH........EVER.*
After 84 or so I disagree.
The funny thing about Rush is people think they are super nerdy...they are, but what people dont realize is they also rock really hard, all their riffs are fucking so meaty, not to mention neil and geddy

You hit the nail on the head! Genius! You have witnessed three geniuses making art and making it look easy!
"this is a song about a car, it's called...The Red Barchettta" fucking epic!

You sound like me 😀
I'm 54 & really started to get into Rush in 1981. They're at the top of my list of favorite bands along with Pink Floyd 💗
I can put a Rush song on and go right back to my room in high school

Nothing compares to driving down a highway in Texas listening to this song! Rush music is the soundtrack of my life.❤️
Red Barchetta is just a perfect embodiment of all elements that make Rush. ESL is my favorite version of it too.

NO band can compare to the sheer awesomeness that is RUSH. Neil Pearts drum wizardry is just amazing
Canadian summer driving anthem

I've been a Rush fan since 1980. They still blow my mind. Amazing talent. Cheers Ruben, from Oregon coast U.S.A
It has a Jazz influenza with its crisp and sharp tones and timing. Super professional musicians.
Queen was one of my favorite bands growing up too. Saw them 6 times including 1982 Live Killers Tour which blew me away! Both Rush and Queen were dynamite live!
And they are both so deliciously different you can love both simultaneously!
Great Review Ruben!! I could see the joy on your face!
Magical! Isn’t it!!? Always get goosebumps!
Been listening to RUSH since 1982. They have provided a soundtrack for most of my life.
I'll second Cygnus X1 Book 2...it's time Ruben. You're ready for an existential experience.....🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
2112 Temples of syrinx.
No, no, andy431431 ... He's gotta do the full song, the full album side of 2112! ... and ... he did! 🙂
Yea this is such a great c lasic masterpiece from rush tyvm for sharing it .......
This is one of the best Rush reactions I’ve seen. Love your commentary and can’t wait for more Rush. Respect.
More Rush please!
Natural Science, Camera Eye, Malignant Narcissism, The Trees
Ooh...The Trees
To me, this is a perfect example of the care they take with every song. Closing out the track deserves just as much attention as everything else ...
Rush got me through my teens and probably 20s. Neil is the good advice giving father figure I never had.

BEGGING!
2112 is my favorite but there all genuis

Thanks for recognizing how awesome and beautiful this band truly is👍

It is ok to like both Queen and Rush. I do. The love of music has no boundaries nor time limit.

I am talking early 1980's onward. They never sat on their old hits and milked them, but soldiered on with vim and vigor! What a testament to their skill and fortitude as artists and musicians. If they ever play near me again, I will be in line to buy a ticket to their show!
They were so great live
Great reaction... Please react to Passage to Bangkok from the same album/video. I promise you won’t be disappointed!!
Fabulous drum sound played by the professor!
Prog Saturdays are the BEST Saturday....🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
One song I love and gets overlooked is Something for Nothing. I love the power and anger behind it.
you must hear hemispheres one of their best
Patrick McEvoy - Magic!
Rush. They are to MUSICIANSHIP what the BEATLES are to SINGING!! I MISS THEM!!!!
Side one of Hemispheres bro....You will be blown away,....
Moving Pictures is deep with great tracks. Red Barchetta may be the most underestimated one.
Distant Early Warning.....live Rio!
Welcome Ruben!, music composed some yesrs ago still ahead in time. People just begining to appreciate this talent. ☺
I love it! :D
I'm a new Rush fan, but listened to every of their albums already. They are simply amazing.
Love seeing your face as you listen ... you seem to take such pleasure in it. I'm one of the 'rare' female Rush fans - been listening since 1978. Sure am going to miss them. It's fun to see new people learning about The Canadian Power Trio.
Rush for decades and Yes for more decades than Rush. Close To The Edge or Gates of Delirium, listen to either of those if you never have.
Ha! Your "damn it's over face?" was great! I feel that way too, when Rush songs are over.
RIP Neil
Neil was the GOAT!
Cheers!
Yeah, you got back to doing Rush! You rock my friend!!!
All good bands , get to the soul , dude.
Its easy to loose track of time when listening to rush. The long songs never seem long to me.
Correct last line is ...To "DRINK" with my uncle at the fire side...ah i loved the whole moving pictures album.
There is a great article by the guy who wrote the story that inspired this song meeting and riding motorcycles cross country with Neil.
You got sucked into liking them. That’s what happened to me as well😂 Welcome to the brotherhood of Rush🤘
Geddy Lee is the ONLY bass player everyone wants to air guitar to
Ear- Gasm EVERY TIME! And yes you must listen to The Camera Eye.
It seems like more work goes into one Rush song than it does for other bands' entire albums.
One of my favorites!
Haken - Visions for next Prog Saturday!
It’s like this.you either love em or you hate em’. Welcome to the club. They are something special. Check out between the wheels of grace under pressure (also on the snakes and arrow live concert). One of my favorites.
Jeeze......Closer to the Heart!
