Speed and Twister are still my two favourite action flicks. They make you care about the characters and they don't take themselves too seriously.

Sorry, Dan and others, this is LONG, but please bear with me. You'll see why. Apologies in advance.
Graham Yost's father, mentioned early on, was the Canadian TV legend *ELWY YOST* who was famous for hosting "Saturday Night At The Movies." Basically, every week, Yost would introduce a double-bill of movie classics, usually coordinated around some theme or unifying element (a director, a star), with an extended intermission between the two films. That intermission was what made Yost different for the time: it consisted of interviews and discussions with the movies' surviving stars and crew, with critics, historians, whoever Elwy could get hold of.
For those of us from pre-internet days in Ontario, it was really the only public place to get an educational treatment of movies-- and on a public broadcaster, TVOntario, so we could see the films and the intermission segment WITHOUT COMMERCIALS. It was relatively unique for its time and, for many of us, it allowed us to experience everything from early detective serials to John Huston movies to Ealing comedies and so forth, especially when home video didn't exist or was in its infancy. And the whole thing was Elwy's baby, a show he created and hosted for decades.
Beyond the trivia of all this, though, I mention it all because you can still see Elwy's influence, indirect as it may be, all over the internet-- and specifically in things like Dan's "All My Movies" approach. Yost was one of the pioneers of this sort of approach and which filtered through other cinephiles over the decades and really found footing with channels like TMC and ever more so when platforms like RUclips came into being. In a way, you probably don't get guys like Dan Murrell doing what they do without Elwy Yost, even if they never heard of him or saw a second of his show.
And, all in all, I think that's pretty bloody great.

I see Dan made no mention of "Speed 2: Cruise Control," but I want to bring up this aspect: In 1992, "Die Hard 3" was announced that it was going to be set on a cruise ship. However, after "Under Siege" came out, that film was scrapped. I've never seen it confirmed, but I've always wondered if Fox took the script for "Die Hard 3" and turned it into "Speed 2."

I'm laughing because I saw this in the theatre when it came out. Loved it. Probably saw it three times. Saw Wolf the following week, then saw Lion King. Summer 94 was a good movie summer. At the same time, I still love Speed today. I love the chemistry between Keanu and Sandra. I love Dennis Hopper. I love that it can still entertain me nearly 30 years later.

Man, oh man, do I still love this movie! There's just something so special about action films from the early 90s, particularly the ones which were inspired by Die Hard, and they really haven't been the same since then. I think the overall craft does have a lot to do with that, as CGI was experimental and only used sparingly around the time. Filmmakers like Jan de Bont were more concerned about a relatively more believable scenario which required less suspension of disbelief. The minute your brain tells you, "Oh, that's obviously CGI," it does take you out of the movie more, and I admire filmmakers who aspire to shoot as much practical material as humanly possible. I was also 11 when Speed originally came out in theaters, but I'm happy to say it wound up being the first R-rated movie I was actually allowed to see on the big screen. In fact, it was a full family outing at the time, as I saw it with both my parents, a couple of their friends and my sister. I'm really glad I did get that chance too cause it's definitely one of those kinds of movies best experienced on the big screen with a full audience. Since then, I've seen it countless times and have owned quite a few copies on almost every home video format known to man since 1994. I'm glad to see Disney recently put out a 4K release that restores most if not all the legacy bonus features from the 2-disc DVD. I'll definitely have to pick it up again soon, for the umpteenth time, haha.

Speed 3 is great too. Hilarious episode of Father Ted (S3, Ep3). When Father Ted gets the local milkman Pat Mustard fired from his delivery job, Pat then threatens the priests by putting a bomb on his milk float which will go off if it goes under 4 mph.

You can actually loop a tape, so it doesn't need to be rewound or played backwards, but it requires a physical cut and join to create. So as you mention Dan, not as simple or quick as they do in the movie. It also wouldn't result in the bag appearing, disappearing and appearing again so quickly (it would only transition from one to the other).

Much like Dan, but two years older, my parents kept me away from R-rated movies...but they saw Speed that summer and loved it and felt I could handle it when it came out on VHS that fall. Was definitely my first R-rated movie I watched and thought it was great. Been a long time since I’ve seen it, but I suspect it’s still a lot of fun!
Also between this show and the Rewatchables, I feel like mid-90s Siskel and Ebert were pretty accurate on action (was I entertained always seemed to be the standard for action), but comedies was a complete guessing game.

To each their own, but to me All My Movies has a more lasting potential on RUclips because it's more about facts and deep dives than fandom. I find the best movie critic content has at least 70% info 30% opinion. For example, I don't need someone to tell me about every single Speed sequence he likes, I know them, but I don't know about how the cast was hired, what the producer was doin before, or the budget of the movie at the time compared to other action movies.
I feel Dan has a following not just because he's good at reviewing things, but mostly because he's a "facts" guy, he leans on hard facts to explain something, like a movie historian, or sometimes an economics teacher ^^

I was 12 when Speed came out, and the version of that elevator story that was circulating my Connecticut school yard was that the guy who tried rescuing people that way had lost both his hands, so.....yeah, it definitely got around

Day 5 of asking Dan to watch One Piece: The side characters are interesting on their own, but when put with all the other characters, the group dynamic is worth all those episodes.

Just a 2nd comment to ask : Do you know Oliver Harper, Dan ? He's a movie retrospective guy on youtube and I feel you 2 could have a great conversation on a classic movie (he reviews a lot of 90s action movies).

Producer Guy : Why didn't he just shoot the tires
Screenwriter Guy : So that movie can happen

    • @TommyTheCat83
      @TommyTheCat83 3 года назад +1

Because shooting tires is a movie trope that doesn't usually work. Also it is very dangerous because the bullets bounce randomly and can hit pedestrians.

@@amitverma4203 You are right, he doesn't know that. He doesn't know a lot. But what he does know is the guy WILL blow up a bus and has the ability to do it remotely. So he should follow the rules until he knows what he is dealing with.

If you want a movie that solely focusses on an elevator killing people, you should watch the Dutch movie 'De Lift'¹ by director Dick Maas. He's one of the biggest Dutch directors that never went to Hollywood. Another movie of him you might like is 'Amsterdamned'².
