Saw this in theaters for the 25th anniversary a few weeks ago (my first post vax outing! woo!), and even though I've seen it a million times and own the entire series on Blu Ray... man this movie holds up and I was so happy to see it in the theater. The tension/pacing/sound choices, etc... brilliant. The CIA wire sequence works every. time. My personal favorite MI is Ghost Protocol, but the first one is a classic.

Elfman's score is stereo perfection, listening to it in your headphones with some instruments going right to left and left to right just put a smile on your face.
And the hand/sweat thing... the very next scene of Ethan shows that he's already a few inches up, and he looks surprised he's up already.

I’ll never forget seeing this movie in theaters as a kid with my elderly aunt. She fell asleep in the first scene, then woke up in the third act. I’ve never seen someone so terribly confused. It melted her brain, but when I asked her what she thought of it, she just smiled and said “it was a little too predictable.”

Just so you know Dan, I don’t remember the exact years but in the 90s when smoking was banned on flights it originally only applied on domestic flights in the continental US. For a good while after that you could still smoke on overseas flights. So if he was flying to Europe then Jim Phelps very well could have been ok smoking on an airplane in 1996.

You forgot to mention how brilliant Elfman's music is (replacing Silverstri's).

I've honestly been so disappointed in the M:I film franchise. The idea that was originally presented was that every movie would be a different style/genre. The first was a psychological thriller/whodunit, while the second turned out a more action-based movie. And then they stopped trying to change the formula and just keep making the action movies over and over again.
Tom Cruise does his own stunts. That's pretty damn cool and all. But it's the same movie, over and over again.

I didn't know Cast was on the soundtrack for this. 'Dreamer' is a belter of a tune.
Truth be told the scene where Phelps explains what happened in the opening mission, but Hunt imagines his own sequence of events, really confused me. It was like being told the instructions for how to assemble a bookcase but being shown pictures of a desk.

As a train enthusiast I'm still mad at the fact that there was no catenary over the high speed rail line.
Might have messed up the Helicopter scene though.
Also the channel tunnnel is actually three separate tunnels.
Two rail tunnels, one for each direction, and one service tunnel in between.
So the scene with the oncoming train would not happen in reality.
I'm lots of fun at parties btw.

I watched this and the second as well as the third last month and I thought it was pretty good. Story wise I would say it was about as good as Mission impossible 4 one of my favorite movies in the franchise. If I had to rank these movies it be:
    1. Mission impossible and Mission impossible 4
    2. Mission impossible 3
    3. Rogue Nation
    4. Mission impossible 2 and Fallout
The reason 2 and fallout are at 4 is because while those movies have some great moments from the action to the locations, they miss a few things that made the film that came before them good. As for the reason I put 3 over rogue nation is mainly because of Philip Seymour Hoffman who they should've gave more to do in that movie.

Believe it or not I hated this film and its ending for a very long time... until Mission: Impossible 2 came out! As someone that grew up watching the original Mission: Impossible including the revival that reused old scripts because of the writers strike in the late 80s, I inadvertently became a huge fan of the franchise and the character of Jim Phelps. I was pleasantly surprised and saddened that Phelps would be a character in the Cruise film as a way of passing the torch, which I was so down for! Reminded me of the M:I sister franchise Star Trek and the way Star Trek Generations has Kirk do the same with Picard!... UNTIL that villain reveal happened and I was beside myself as a nerdy 15 year old dork! To put it in context for those that aren't OG M:I fans Jim Phelps betraying the IMF forces after 25 + years of being the franchises hero was like watching James Kirk fake his death in Star Trek The Motion Picture only to show up at the end as the villain hatching a stupid plan with sexified V'Ger! At the time no one else in my life understood why that was a big deal for me, but all that was forgiven once I saw Mission Impossible 2!! I suddenly was able to appreciate this films interesting stylistic flourishes and attempts to add a layer of DePalma's signature sophisticated sleaze! Plus the soundtrack and score were and still are among my all time favorites!

the second one is disliked by many (it's a very John Woo movie), but from three on the movies have become more and more respected and are considered some of the best action movies of the last decade. Each movie has its great moments and spectacular action pieces where Tom Cruise does not hold back from doing insane stuff! I can really recommend them as standalone pieces distinct from the original tv series ;)
