Can The Carnaby HE2 Replace The Rupert Neve MBT Super Silk?

- In this video I compare the Cranborne Audio Carnaby HE2 to the Rupert Neve MBT super silk. I was asked if the HE2 could replace the MBT super silk. I instantly answered no I feel they are very different. I always like to test these claims and definitively know if what I feel is right is in fact right. Turns out the HE2 does not replace the MBT.

I completely agree. I have the 500 series of the Carnaby and a Neve mixer with red and blue silk. This is exactly what I hear, the Carnaby is a very interesting and valuable EQ that adds harmonics. The Neve silk is a different animal.
Great insight as always! Thank you!
Great shootout Paul. At the end of the day it boils down to what you like. I like the solid Neve sound as the starting point, then can see using the HE2 for flavor. Thanks.
Exactly how I use it. MBT is positioned before the HE2 almost every time.
Looking at the frequency responses of these two devices is less than half of the story. I really wish you would have showed the Hammerstein plots and plug-in doctor because that's going to indicate a lot more the degree to which we're going to get thickness and saturation. If you showed it, it would have given us information on the relative level of even an odd harmonics as well as the total THD across that frequency spectrum of interest. Also, plug-in doctor is not a very powerful tool and is subject to quite a lot of artifacts, although it's useful in many circumstances. I would suggest that you instead use REW room EQ wizard which is a very powerful tool which is also quite easy to use.
Excellent video Paul!! I very much appreciate you doing this video. I am still hoping Rupert Neve Designs puts out a 500 series or a box with Super Silk that would be cheaper than spending 4k on the MBT.
That's just a logical thing to do. I don't understand why they haven't done it already.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio agreed
The MBT sounds more open as well. Even on my IK multimedia Ilouds I could hear it.
Carnaby High End is insane, very nice thanks,,,
On the lows the Silk sounds like it adds a some poke or attack while the HE2 adds a slightly softer pillow sound IMO. Would be interesting to see what's happening to the transients in this comparison.
The super silk is definitely a magic touch.
Next time show the harmonics of each on plugin doctor fft. U only showed the freq response
In the top end example, the Carnaby's doing something interesting to the kick of all things. Almost imperceptible, but it's definitely there. I heard it straight away.
Cool vid. Could you (please) do a quick vid on how to use PIDoc to do these kind of comparisons. Cheers.
Yes, I actually found a free version you can use. I'll do this video today.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio superstar! Tyvm
I've owned the 542 which has red and blue silk but not super silk (red and blue blend together) and owned the carnaby 500. I sold the 542 and returned the carnaby 500. I don't have an MBT so I can't speak to that. But both the 542 and the carnaby 500 were both garish, gauche and too tawdry in their application of saturation. If i was forced to keep one it would undoubtedly be the 542, because the carnaby was just terrible with crackles. And, Cranborne specifically said that's what we should expect because that was an aspect of their technology. But, that blue and red silk is very hard to make subtle and supportive; it so wants to be intrusive and look-at-me-ma-no-hands!!
Great comparison. Semi-unrelated question, but you've mentioned a few times that the MBT compressor isn't very useful to you -- can you think of any scenarios where you WOULD use it? Or do you just have too many other good compressors to even bother with it?
I'd use it if I was adding it to a single stem like a vocal or guitar. It is simply a case that I have dedicated mastering compressors in the chain that this compressor just doesn't get used. If you didn't have a dedicated mastering compressor you would make use of it.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Yeah I have an SPL Iron so that of course makes me never think of using the MBT comp.
Hi Paul., really love your video content and am subscribed to catch more of your great and informative videos, Thanks for making this shootout! I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a Carnaby HE2 to add with my SSL Fusion and Bus + for a tri combo for my mixes, what would be your thoughts on this? Sorry if this question is off topic. Thanks in advance!
Would be a great combo. One thing to know is that the Carnaby isn't like your standard EQ. It's more about adding colour and harmonics to a specific band. It would add really well to the Fusion. What you could find later in life you swap out the Fusion and bus plus for the Wes Audio Tube EQ and Wes Audio bus compressor. Giving 3 units all with digital recall. This is the rack I have and it's incredible.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Wicked, I am literally going to do this next year! I have been eyeing up the WesAudio gear for a while now and digital recall is such a god send, appreciate the reply Paul. Have a great day!
@nickysmirk1160 I feel going forward over the next few years, we will see a surge of companies adding digital recall to their products. I'm all for it.
Hi Paul, what do you think when comparing your audio tales eqs vs the carnaby...? This would be a very interesting comparison 😮
@feliksweber8566 I don't see them as being anything alike to be honest. The AudioTales 1951 is a very clean tube EQ and the 1954 is a very clean passive EQ. The Carnaby HE2 is about adding harmonic content.
Could you use the other bands on HE2? To bring boost lower?
I tried this and didn't work. The way the EQ works isn't like a standard EQ. The mid band reacts with the other bands so you couldn't just add in the mid range freqncies.
THANKS PAUL, BUT COULD YOU TRY TO MATCH THE EQ CURVE SLIGHTLY CLOSER BUY BOOSTING AN APPROPRIATE FREQUENCY ON THE MID BAND OF THE HE2. GREAT VIDEO WHICH CLEARLY DEMOS THE INHERANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO UNITS .
I tried this and no it doesn't work. The mid range works in a very different way to a standard EQ.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio CHEERS PAUL , I THINK A VIDEO DEMONSTRATING WHY IT DOESN'T WORK WOULD BE INTERESTING, WHY NEVE HAVE NOT RELEASED A I UNIT RACK OR 500 SERIES WITH ONLY SILK FUNCTION BAFFLES ME. THANKS FOR REPLYING CHRIS
@christopheroconnor8842 baffles me too. But I feel it's because they think it'll affect sales of the other units that have silk textures built in as a key feature.
Are you still using that Kiive plugin that models MBT and Fusion?
Sometimes. I wouldn't say I don't use it but I am finding I'll use it less and less these days.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Don't blame you. It's hard to beat the real thing.
@1loveMusic2003 very hard to beat the real thing, but they do get pretty close. It's a great option for working in the box and wanting to achieve that neve silk sound.
Its like the craneborn is more solid state sounding and MBT more transformers witch i for like the most
Carnaby = Prince sounding ; MBT = Michael Jackson sounding 😄😄
Together = ?
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Perfection ... 😁
@@AudioAnimalsStudio Harry Styles???? Maybe???
How does this guy keep finding room for more and more equipment!?
I built a 3rd studio to install what I take out of Studio A and Studio B.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio like a another physical studio? Or you setup another room and you’re calling it a studio? Seems like it can get expensive.
@blvkqmusicgroup no another fully equipped studio. Looks just like this one, but it's stereo and not atmos like the other two. There are pictures on our Instagram page.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio nice 👍🏾
I LOVE IT I MEAN THE HARDWARE ALSO THE INTERFACE IS GOOD I ONLY USE NEVE VST THIS DAYS .. THE WORLD OF RAP AND NEVE IS NOT THIS ERA AGAIN..
I think the 1073 is still used by a lot of rap producers even to this day. There definitely are other options but the 1073 still stands its grounds.

I tried this and it wouldn't work. The mid band on the HE2 is really interesting and doesn't really act like a standard EQ does.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio HI PAUL A DEMO OF HOW IT DOESN'T WORK WOULD BE INTERESTING
I love neve sound but neve is not that fun.
The transformers make a big difference here.
