I was able to fend off sooooo many enemies during that fight, and kill them when I was cold, wet, and without rested bonus, being swarmed by enemies. Silver sword is also EXTREMELY expensive to fully upgrade. 180 Silver total takes a while to collect/get back to base/smelt and 23 Iron hurts to use up when you know you're going to need a ton of silver for the Plains biome (which I forget nearly every time).
Hugely underrated weapon is the Huntsman bow (iron level with feathers). It has super low aggro radius (4m vs 8m of other bows) which means you can either silently snipe enemies, or draw them out of a crowd if they aren't all on top of each other. Very useful in the plains to pick apart Fuling Camps and draw out Loxes from their 3 packs to take on one at a time.

Using it with combo armor (root chest, heavy helm, etir legs) makes you an unstoppable bomb throwing tank. My first playthrough, I was adamant on getting the highest tier armor for each boss to be the most prepared. I think I spent nearly 100 hours on the Bronze Age (also cuz I didn't know how big copper deposits actually were). It's just such a shame that it takes so many resources to make weapons that are the worst metal weapons in the game. I know we want to motivate the player to move to better weapons, but I think the Bronze recipes should be tweaked a bit, especially given how cheap Iron is (once you find a crypt).

The triple bronze mod should seriously just be the way the game is by default. 2 copper and 1 tin for a single bronze bar is absolutely mental and the massive copper nodes take way too long to mine when you're stuck with an antler pick. Copper deposits should be small and easy to clear just like tin deposits.

I love playing with the battle axe. Once you master it, feels amazing. The knock back attack is OP. It's not the greatest damage attack but it doesn't take much stam and it's fast and easy to hit with and it often staggers. The regular attack even though slow has good AOE and massive damage. Now the movement penalty is steep so you have to master putting it away when needing to run and taking back out after. But master that, plus stamina management and using the attacks in the right way, it's just incredible in my opinion.

I think a small thing about the crossbow you overlooked perhaps is how different it's stamina and ready costs are arranged vs bows. For a bow once you want to fire you have to draw for awhile and holding a bow ready to fire is taxing. For the crossbow you can swap, fire, and swap out very fast with next to no cost. All you have to do is remember to arm it before your next fight. It's not a great weapon to spam over and over but it's a pretty useful tool for responding quickly IMO.

You put bronze atgeir almost last, it's a shame for it. Atgeir needs bronze and stamina food, but if you have it, atgeir is great. It can be used to clear troll caves, crypts, draugr spawners and wolf packs. Atgeir stuns enemies. In the mountains, you have to find a not too steep place for the fight. Atgeir can even be used to block some attacks. You say it's material intensive, but think you need no shield and than the cost disappears. Atgeir reduces speed by 5%, but one handed weapon plus shield reduces 10% of speed. Bronze atgeir may not be many ranks higher, however it is solid middle (mountains biome) game tool, not to be in the last places.
It is very risky to throw a spear in the mountains, there is a risk of losing it permanently.
For me stone axe is most the most unnecessary. Why not make just few steps further to coastline and get flint axe?

I disagree on the protection staff. If you are maining magic, then this bubble is absolutely mandatory if you're exploring places like mistlands in particular. You're very squishy wearing the mage robes, and having the 700 absorb shield is a life saver. I know that the 2-3 times that I got complacent, and let my shield expire, and thought I would be all right, a large group of seekers/ticks would always sneak up on me while I was wet/out of stamina/overweight, and die because my bubble was gone. This thing is a non-negotiable for a mage. Takes forever to lvl up though, I think at my xp farm, I spent 3 weeks w/3-4 hours a day lvling it up to where it needs to be in order to be good.

Spears owns all, the knockback on the Frostner is a detriment, because you never get to make the 3 hit combo, the last hit does the most dmg, the attack speed of the spear makes it superior to any other weapon, you can get behind your shield so fast after an attack, because of the short attack animation and you don't lose any dmg, because there is no combo.
I carry, spear, buckler, bow and a sledge hammer in my first 4 slots, that's the only weapons I carry besides the tools for tree, ore and building.
PS: Valheim really needs to add and attack speed stat to weapons, this would make it much easier for players to understand potential DPS.

Ooze bombs are probably the most underrated item in the game. You make them in the swamp, but they have usage up until the end of the game. In the mountain, they can be really useful for wolf raids or clearing frost caves, in the plains, they are incredibly useful at breaking the shields created by the shamans as they repeatedly attack, and in the mistlands, you can use them in dungeons to hit enemies through walls, which can almost kill a seeker and can kill ticks easily if you get the sneak attack bonus damage.

Therte's nothing linear about armor, its really quite simple
Troll armor is possible before eikthyr, and is the only armor worth crafting until the swamp. Then root chest with iron helm/greaves, then padded then carapace.
The game is really not linear at all once you start to optimize your time.
Club until swamp, then iron mace, then frostner for the rest of the game
Crude bow then hunstman bow for the rest of the game (reduced AOE aggro is worth)
You need an Iron pick, iron axe, to be upgraded to blackmetal in the plains
This is why I don't understand complaints of tedium. You don't have to make every weapon, tool, and armor set in the game to finish it.

I had the same opinion as you about polearms until I gave them a proper go. I've used both swords and maces on previous playthroughs and I can easily confirm polearms are by far and away the most effective weapons in the game. Yes their early game is horrendous because they cost a ton of stamina to use and are quite slow, but once you level up the skill a bit they just become weapons of mass destruction.
Maces are broken early on and became much less effective after bonemass.
Swords are just consistently powerful but they're never the best choice.
Polearms start off terribley but are without a doubt the best weapons for late game imo. The lightning polearm thing makes such quick work of the seeker solderis it's insane.

You didn't mention the knife cancel. Which puts it up with sword, or in some cases above sword. rapidly pressing normal attack then secondary attack will let you do both, with the increased damage multiplier on the first attack, with the stamina cost of just the secondary attack. Which makes it high damage with low stam cost. the negative is locked into secondary attack animation of secondary attack.

When you talk about weapons you mention all those overlooked side effects like stamina usage and dps, but I think you also overlook some things with the pickaxe. Saving 30 seconds on repairing 3 weak pickaxes rather than portaling in the same spot back to base (portals are really cheap) sounds like saving time, but with an actual blackmetal pickaxe fully upgraded has more durability than the other 3 combined, meaning you end making the repair trip less often, and it weights less while only taking 1 inventory slot, which are quite restricted anyway. I still prefer having one versitile pickaxe is better as you can always drop the ores on the ground, hop in the portal, repair gear, go back and pack the portal up, then be on your way. You might think - well, since you carry the portal with you what difference does the inventory space and weight make if you can drop the non-ore stuff off in the base quickly since you are already there. well, the same idea as before. More space = longer adventures and less time wasted going back to base drop stuff off, just as with repairing. I hope I gave you a valueable different perspective on this topic :)

  • @thundaGawd
    @thundaGawd Год назад +8

Not sure I agree with the bow being S-tier, because it needs resources to function. Especially the Frost arrows, a joy to use, but you need to farm the materials to make them.
What worked for me, was to actually use the lowest tier arrows, but combined this with a sniper style play whereby you take advantage of the damage multiplier when hitting unaware mobs.
Bows also come short with bosses. Even with the glorious frost arrows. And I don't count going back to a lower tier boss once you've fully upgraded a bow and have a much higher bow skill. Much better to use melee weapons, to be honest. Except for Moder, riddle that boss with arrows.
There are also two mobs where bow usage gets tricky. Stone golems and Abominations. You can whittle down stone golems with a good bow, bow skill and wooden arrows, combined with lots of kiting. You could use frost or fire arrows to bring down an Abomination, but it's really a waste of resources. Melee those things, especially Abominations, and one of the reasons to learn how to parry.
So in short, with a good bow (Draugur and above), good bow skill, wooden arrows, good skill (dodge, sneak, parry). But as a die hard fan of bows and bow play, I would not put bows in S tier.
    I appreciate the recognition though.😊

Have you considered whether or not 2-hand weapons are more effective in certain situations than 1-hand weapons in terms of dps depending on how many times you can attack before backing off? If you parry a monster and you can only swing once with a 1-hand weapon and a second swing can get you hit while a 2-hand weapon can also do the same, you end up doing more dps with a 2-hand weapon because it does more damage in that one swing. This is usually the balance between 1-hand weapons vs 2-hand weapons. It matters how many attacks you can get in before backing off.

    • @noahodum9737
      @noahodum9737 11 месяцев назад

This is because most of the time, you won't be able to parry big hits for the monsters that NEED that large chunk damage to finish off and end up rolling, making the 2h worse to use overall as a lot of the times the openings are too small to really even get a singular hit in.

The biggest issues for game balance right now is that you just really aren't incentivized to make anything in bronze that isn't absolutely necessary going forward (1 fermenter, maybe a bronze axe, although most of us just use trolls to farm fine wood early anyways)
Armor-wise the root harnesk is the king of armors right now, with the fenris legs and highest tier helm possible being the most min-max you can get, offsetting movement speed cost of using sword/shield. I don't think the metal armors have enough benefit to them to even warrant making anymore. My first playthrough I made every piece of armor, my second playthrough I skipped bronze and silver, my third playthrough I just made a root harnesk and then never worried about armor again, only upgrading when I was really getting my ass kicked. My proposal would be increase armor values across the board of the metal armors by 2, giving a real tradeoff for taking an effect instead of protection.
Then, you have the issue with all 2h weapons not having an approriate damage-stamina ratio that makes them worth considering (besides Krom, because of it's block and parry potential) All they need to do here is either increase damage or decrease stamina usage or decrease animation time. (Buff the Krom to be the best weapon please IG, I'm begging you let me live out my fantasy of being a hyper-armored str build with a giant sword)
Knives have fallen off immensely since they buffed swords in ML, being able to dual wield them would make them viable again as they would then become high enough DPS to offset the lack of multi-hit.
Axes are mostly useless as 1h weapons, since the damage-stamina usage is just not there. Allowing us to dual wield these would make them more viable as well, or alternatively give them more stagger, or a bleed effect.

So the dead raiser and staff of protection actually get really good if you stack the effects together and level up the skill, at 85, that shield is worth 620 health, and when yoy cast its an AOE, so it effects teamates, including skeletons ;D
I had my skeletons tank the queen, while i cast offensive spells from the back, refreshing the shield on all 3 of us as needed.
The skeletons, at level 85 hit for ablittle over 100 damage, and if you can get archers, they can out in some good work, even without the shield, 2 skeletons will solo a seeker easiliy, while you fight something else.
I think the biggest weakness is that those skeletons cannot traverse the mistalnds well, so yoy often have to leave them behind, bit they make good guards when mining ;D
(That being said, the blood magic skill is vwry difficult to level quickly)

You can actually parry golems with a pickaxe and get the bonus stagger damage. No need to jump on their heads, though it is riskier; only time for one slow swing between attacks, and you have to work out which attacks can be parried and which have to be dodge rolled.
I've only done it with the iron pickaxe while I was silver mining, but I guess the antler pickaxe would work the same way.
I'd have switched the positions of the Spinesnap and Draugr Fang bows. The bone bow does more damage, but it's less durable and uses noticeably more stamina. Nothing cooler than a Draugr Fang, either.
Bronze wouldn't be such an issue if you got 3 ingots from the 2 copper and 1 tin you use to make it...

I for one can't 100% agree with this list. The flint spear, the torch, the bronze mace, bronze pickaxe, and the bronze atgier are all valid weapons early game on harder difficulties. If you are playing with increased raids and difficulty, skipping Eikthyr isn't a bad strat, opting for using trolls to acquire ore instead. Doing so would leave you ample time to make mid to late game progression without being raided by waves of powerful enemies when all you want to do is quickly setup base.
The bronze atgier is a good option against most enemies in the black forest and can even fairly reliably stagger trolls. The bronze mace, imo, beats even bonfire when dealing with skeletons on higher difficulties.
The torch is almost an essential tool for beginners, who just spawned and don't wanna be overwhelm by boars or graylings, being both a repellent and effective weapon against both. Plus it's cheep and easily acquired.
Higher tier melee weapons become essentially null and void on higher difficulties (esp very hard), so magic and range are S tier on hard and very hard. The magic shield is ESP amazing! Frankly, idk why that one isn't ranked higher, even on normal. Provides a guaranteed perfect parry, regardless of poise, and can tank any amount of damage while it's up. An absolute must in non-speedrun playthroughs on higher difficulties against the Queen (and really, just exploring the Mistlands). Esp since magic provides a bar, separate of the stamina, ensuring that you can stay on the move.
Imagine if they get rid of the clipping glitch (which honestly, wouldn't be hard... just would need to have it set where your character has to have foot/body room in order for it to be placed, which I hope they do patch that.), and they changed the hammers so they didn't hit through walls, then the Queen would REALLY mess you up!
but this is all just my opinion.
On normal mode, this list checks out.

İ never used bombs the main reason being it doesnt really give enough info i think as to what dmg it will do so i just feel like bombs do 0 damage and just there to be crafted for fun or smt. I dont understand like it says does 5 dmg what am i gonna do with 5 dmg

the battleaxe secondary is good but only in multiplayer when you have a friend that can capitalize of the stun

Atgeir players are a hive mind. They always open with a spin attack even on parried enemies causing them to fly away and making me miss my heavy attack 😢

As a polearm main it hurts to hear that himmin afl is just a style to you and a generally a pretty useless weapon, with its stagger rate and crowd control ability. As far as I can tell, polearms attack faster than any two handed weapon and can kill very quickly against krom and battle axes.

The problem is (I think) that 3/6 bosses have piercing resistance (including the last two) so all the piercing weapons are kind of relegated to being more for exploring and scouting than actually completing the game. Also the hitbox on sledgehammers is just way better than the atgier. Atgiers can hit everything around you, but sledgehammers hit EVERYTHNG around you. So it's just kind of outshined in the AoE department.

how can u rate atgeir weapons so low? had a new run on highest difficulty and i was shocked to know how insane the stagger is on atgeir weapons. I was perma staggering big mobs such as lox and etc. They also have really good damage output, broken secondary attack and good reach. I would without a doubt say atgeir weapons are s-tier

I would put frostner in b tier for the ff reasons...
Knock back has nothing to do with staggering enemies. It's the amount of damage you do within a certain amt of time that causes them to stagger.
As someone who likes to parry, i hate high knock back weapons because it prevents me from doing bonus dmg because the enemies can sometimes be pushed too far.
Frostner doesn't really have that much damage unless the monster is weak to spirit. Very niche application.

Claws has very good secondary attack. it basicly stuns enemies and is very good versus 1v1s you can easy kill even 2star Fuling berserkers in plains with them.

Bruh, no... My Fists are at 57. Got the Flesh Rippers + Fenris Gear. I'm doing 100-300 damage with every hit. And altogether got a speed boost, fire resistance, 6x Parry, and 6x Backstab.
I can't wait to see the damage I can do when I max my Fists and Run skills.

ok cool that you did the tier list but I'd much rather watch like all weapons randomized and you go 1 by 1
