Animal lover is a magnificent track. Bernard's guitar playing over the top of the slowly rising wall of noise, leading to it's ultimate climax is sheer brilliance. Brett's repetitive, desperate (in a good way) and punk-like 'Animal Lovaaa!!' vocal gets sucked into this vortex resulting in what can only really be described as Epic..... Like the poster below who mentioned context, you really do have to remember that this record was blowing away the shoe gazing cobwebs of the time and standing up to the noise Nirvana was making Bernard had the capacity to either rip it up violently with an intense power on the one hand or make the most effortlessly beautiful piano pieces. Animal Lover's position in the album is a perfect foil for The Next Life...
I haven't listened to Suede in over 10 yrs and hadn't thought to look them up on RUclips until now. I must say Brett's aged very well, looks a lot better than when he was young--handsome and elegant...
The rehearsal snippet of 'The Next Life' at the end is amazing - Butler-era Suede are one of the greatest bands that will ever exist. Lovely post PlugInMuse!
Love these two together. Best songwriting duo since Morrissey/Marr. So glad they made up. Hope they do another The Tears project, and come to Australia. 😊
Still one of the best bands and best 2 first albums ever. The quality of the second album was unbelievable and every single bside song was better than most asides by other bands. If Oasis hadn't happened then Suede would have been bigger and if Bernard had not quit then they would have been huge. Amazing songs. Far more than just a basic indy guitar band.
I can see the comparison to T-Rex. The albums Tanx and The Slider were very different to Bolan’s public persona just as Dog Man Star was very different to the singles Suede released. Suddenly, like T-Rex, you realised there was so much more going on than what was in the charts. We still think of Marc as a glam rock icon and Suede as Britpop pioneers but time has shown both bands were so much more than that. I must add, Suede’s new stuff surpassed all my expectations. The proved everyone wrong and created new music that still sounds like Suede and actually has enhanced the bands reputation. I honestly can’t recall a comeback being so successful.
No way, Animal Lover is a great tune. There has been much talk about this track from all camps. Remember at the time it was going up against Nirvana. Those two songs would have made the first record, a softer record. It wasn't in the cards. The first record had to rock. That was the times. The right record came out. Both songs are B-Side. Very great B-Sides.
God, I agree that My Insatiable One and To The Birds should've been on there in place of Animal Lover and Moving. I'm glad he realizes that. I'm also glad I can make my own special edition of the album! But I do very much admire that they aspired to have brilliant B-Sides, but that only works when all of your album songs are just as good. Just my opinion, of course.
webster670 Animal Lover is a rawer song but a great hard closer before Next Life ends the record, would feel lacking without Animal Lover. But I do feel like Moving could have been better as a b side and the fantastic My Insatiable One been on the album instead. But whatever, Sci Fi lullabies brings it together amazingly as something of a 3rd Bernard era Suede album
