I know this thread is 5 years old, but maybe I can help future users avoid my issue. I didn't have any problem with the uppers, but on the lowers both sleeves pulled out with the ball joints. I didn't realize why the stems were so much larger at first, then I realized the sleeves were still attached, and had to press them off and reinstall on the new control arms. FWIW.

Great video but it helped us removing some of the bolts to the anti bar to make it easier when replacing

Thanks very much for the video, would you recommend using a ball joint separator before the pickle fork or not? Do you know if the procedure is the same for B8 A4s?

I'd reccomend ear plugs when you are using the joint splitter... When they finally release from the spindle you might need a new pair of underwear if you don't have ear plugs in. Great video and instruction, job went smoothly.

I purchased the bush instead of the whole arm I plan to press it in. I notice it has to go in exactly the correct way around unlike a conventional bush that works all ways. I want to split the ball joint without breaking the boot like you because Im repairing and reusing my current arm and the ball joint is still fine. Hopefully all goes well.

I think there is quite a bit of variation on their orientation depending on the manufacturer. It is much more important to have the bushings tightened when the car is on the ground than it is to have the bush facing the right way with millimeter or even centimeter accuracy.

Pickle fork damaged the control arm. There is no way to use the pickle fork without the outer tang hitting the control arm. I even cut the pickle fork tips off for more clearance, and its still seized. A week of soaking in pb blaster. Tomorrow I try heating it with a propane torch. But at this point I am resigned to buying a new control arm already.

I know this comment was 3 years ago, but I just had the same issue, had to get a sledgehammer and hit the fork tool as hard as I could and eventually it came off!

@@tomc0518 Ive hit the tool hard enough that the back end of it is mushrooming. had to cut off the tips of the tool as it contacts the control arm. This job is a bitch!
