Visiting a City as Big as My Country

  • The world is wide but maybe we’re not as divided as we think.
For 5 days I explored the bustling city of Sydney. It was a stark contrast to the small town I grew up in. And for 5 days I reflected on what I was experiencing and feeling each day. I had some big questions and emotions over the trip and I’ve posed them here for you to ponder on too.
    -
Kia ora, I’m Kate and I grew up in a small town in Taranaki on the West Coast of New Zealand. I find the whole world and everything in it infinitely interesting. I like exploring new places and making new things.
Join me on my creative journey as I make and explore my way through life. There’s so much to learn and create and I’m open to it and I share my thoughts here. This is a place of kindness and respect, I’m constantly learning and growing, I don’t know everything - no one does - but as I know better I’ll do better.
This channel started when I was 12 years old for a school project. I re-upholstered an office chair and it ended up getting 15,000 views. I didn’t post anything for years, now I’ve decided after a degree in product design later… that yes, in fact, I do like being creative and making things and I don’t think I’ll stop anytime soon.

    Kia Ora young cousin.
    Beautifully stated.
I've been to 37 countries; lived in 6 for more than a year.
I've crossed the Arctic Circle, which comimg from a small Pacific Island that takes a minimum of 5 days to get to from here in Sydney, was a lifelong aim.
Hand on my heart, the magic increases exponentially with every foray into the nexf adventure out there on this crazy, amazing planet.
I am currently saving for my next adventure which i hope will take me through Nagaland, Assam, and Mizoram, on to Nepal, and then ultimately Uzbekistan.
Never stop your adventures into the world. I promise it only gets better.

I love people from NZ because they are down to earth . You come from a stunning country but you are still willing to explore the world and at the same time appreciate the beauty of other countries .

Thank you Louisa! I like to think our isolation gives us roots, allowing us to stay connected to a grounding while we explore and learn and appreciate.

Go out there & explore..just never forget where you've come from. The world is a big place full of beauty & chaos. If the experiences teach you anything it'll be no matter who, where or what you see, gratitude & appreciation always starts & ends from home.

What a brilliant narrative and spirit! You have quite the way with words... I love your observations and perspectives! You should publish... Come back soon and explore more outside the city, west, north or south... Or further afield, QLD, NT. You'd love Adelaide and Tassie!👏👏😎

Thank you for your kind comment Paul! I have always loved words but not often shared them, maybe I need to start to more. I definitely want to explore more of Australia.

@@kateatkinsoncreative Very prosaic. So much better than ordinary narrative. You redly have a skill there, and should definitely think about sharing... Gather them all together into a book. 😊🤗

Thanks Paul, very kind, I did actually self-publish a book at the beginning of this year but only sold a couple of copies to family and friends.

Sydney is a nice place. It is not easy for 5.3 million people to live together harmoniously in one city but on the whole, we manage it. And it is a very diverse population, people from all corners of the globe.
There are plenty of green spaces within Sydney, great beaches and it is surrounded by beautiful environs South, West, and North.

I really enjoyed your city, it was a great adventure! The botanic gardens right by the city were stunning, and the diversity was brilliant. I hope to return and explore some more one day!

I'm from Sydney and it's interesting seeing the perspective of someone who grew up in a medium sized town. I had a similar but far less stark experience when I travelled from Sydney to London. Growing up in the Sydney suburbs the city or the CBD is not something you deal with everyday so it can be a little tiring when you stay there longer than you have to. London was a shock, especially the density of the people over a much larger area than Sydney. Getting out into the English countryside strangely felt more like home than London did.

Thank you for your perspective, when we headed out into the suburbs it did feel like smaller towns do, so I must agree that maybe the CBD is good in measured doses. However, some people thrive in the city environment and my sister absolutely loved it! I guess that’s what makes our world so interesting and amazing, is that everyone is so unique, but all the different parts come together to weave one beautiful whole.
Wow London sounds like a big adventure! Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s pretty cool how places like the English countryside, a place you’d never been to before, could feel like home.
