I first got into club racing this year and built an MP9 TKI4 fitted with an OS Speed B2102 and Sanwa electronics. I spared literally no expense building the fastest car possible. That being said, I took this monster of a car to the track and had a rude awakening when it came down to driving skills. I broke lots of parts because I lacked the skill to pilot such a fast car. Through LOTS of practice, study and setup changes, I can vouch that I’m a decent racer, but most importantly that buggy racing is 90% skills and 10% equipment. All of these kits are quality kits, but it’s the skill building and setup experience that is crucial if you want to get fast.
Yes bro..my freind just using Kyosho MP9 tki RTR with High Voltage servo but with the 21 Kyosho stock engine pullstart only..He win 2nd in the competition..no need to have expensive buggy kits or brand kits if our skill is not good..all people shock come to see his car really RTR..only just him who not using prokits from 10 driver..he want to prove everybody the most important is the driver...hahaahhaha...no part broken at end of the race,that prove Kyosho MP9 tki4 RTR is good quality buggy too even its not prokits..🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice video. This is a trip down memory lane for me. I ran a Kyosho MP5 in the mid 90's. Its peer then was the Mugen MBX4. Those were the only two serious kits at the time. Guys would buy 2 kits and keep 1 for spare parts. The only good engines were Italian back then.

Very nice video... I'm back to the hobby after four years out and I always note that TLR (started with 2.0 to 4.0) comes with all major new improvements that no one do, like more centralize engine on 2.0, brackets, big bore and servo position on 3.0 in the case of electric they added the central diff on 4.0 to be adjusted and wow changed the steering dramatically, the spring shocks, they are (i don't see any one yet) the 1st changing Spring Diameters from top to bottom... anyways i see two platforms only (maybe three): Kyosho.- working on their platform and geometry forever with very good results... and TLR always breaking rules on platform (for me 5 starts) and from these two platforms the other brands starts, Tekno is the other one that looks like they started from scratch (at least in the chasis), of course if you improve an existent platform you will have more durability because improvements are for that to have better performance and durability... here in Texas Mugen is like the Kardashians, I don't see nothing really new on their development but I know they are one of the best brands and they have Maifield and Drake! that I don't see them yet in the first three places very often but the will... humble opinion with my trashy english lol... the good thing is "YOU ARE IN THE GOOD WAY IF YOU HAVE A RC CAR" my humble opinion with beer on hand... cheers fellas!
The first thing to find out is what tracks are near you Always wanted to try 1/8 gas but no clubs near us. I recall 1/8 gas on road back in the 80s a company I was sponsored by Dela was the best unfortunately in our area 1/12 carpet on road was huge and team associated was king, corally just came out and was space age a the time and insanely priced at 600.00 for chassis only. Good luck on racing.

I love my JQ cars... I have 3 of them. A 1st Gen, a YE and a WE. Plus, enough parts and chassis’ to build two more. But, if I was going to make a change I’d probably go with the Mugen. After watching Adam Drake’s video about the refinements and design I was highly impressed.

What about mugen MBX7r or mbx8? One of the best buggies there is, if you ask me? And not too expensive, a bit more than AE rc 8b3.1e parts. And they are modeled after the mbx7 platform? Othan than not including mugen, good video bro!
Kyosho & Hot Bodies make the best cars. Mugen is right there too. The serpent srx8 look amazing as well. Sworkz looks good too. From my experience the losi is really durable tekno too, both good for the "hero laps" . Kyosho and Hot bodies are more consistent on track.. I drive kyosho 1/8 buggy & truggy. Hot bodies d817 v2 is my next car.

I gotta question, how long does it take to put a 1/8 scale buggy together? I've never had a kit before and 1/8 scale buggies are my favorite. Also, u mentioned about having experience, my biggest problem is learning how to tune a nitro motor and i have a Ofna Hyper 7 thats been sitting in my basement for a very long time(because no one sells parts for it anymore). I wanna another 8th scale buggy but dont have money to get a kit.
Trick question. You shouldn't. I have owned 20 gas buggies, and none compare to a good E buggy like a mugen. No more headaches of tuning motors. Having them wear out. Having humidity change. Losing a race because the guy that fills your gas doesn't seal your tank. I actually have 2 brand new mugen ninja engines. And 2 RB engins still sitting in a box from the day I decided id rather race my buggies than tune my engines.
Not trying to be an ass or anything, but Kyosho hasn't won in the US in a while, now if you're getting your stuff from AMain, you probably should have thrown in there team car which is the SworkZ, if we are talking about durability, SworkZ is one of, if not the most durable kits. I know that most of the Mugen drivers that I know here in Texas, they swapped out the arms on their MBX7T to the S350T arms due to the durability of them. I ran SworkZ for 2 years, only thing I broke was I stripped out the stock kit center diff(plastic center diff gear) replaced it with the MBX6r center diff and never broke anything else. That kit is on Rails. If I were going to help a beginner 1/8 nitro guy out. I would tell them to start with an RTR nitro, replace the motor with a bump start motor and go that route. It would be cheaper in the long run, if you're buying a kit, no matter the kit, you're spend well over $1500 for quality equipment. You buy an RTR for $600-$700 pull the motor, put a Novarossi or which ever you choose(Protek for me) then have at it. As a beginner nitro driver, you need to understand the motor, not the car. The kits don't honestly matter, you make your kit as fast as you can handle, and as calm as you can drive. So some of the info was good, but most of it was your personal opinion. So here's my personal opinion, X-Ray just won the 1/8 truck championship with Ty Tessmann. So it's all about the driver not the car.
I agree completely. I started out with a JQ RTR buggy and ended up throwing those RTR guts and engine into an $350 8ight 3.0 chassis. It wasn't after I had lots of time, a transmitter/receiver upgrade and several gallons through that RTR engine that I broke in a new Picco engine for the 8ight 3.0. I'm actually still running that same chassis today. There are lots of people with the absolute latest and greatest at the track, but they still can't drive 3 laps in a row without needing a marshal. Nitro is all about the engine and your relationship with it. I agree 100%. What part of Texas are you in? I'm near the gulf. Great comment.

Rtr and the kit is fairly closely priced. When I started, I bought an older model but I made sure it was a kit. I ended buying losi 3.0e buggy. Now if I bought the rtr buggy, chances could have been I bought some more parts for replacement and plus your car won't handle as good as the pre owned kit which has a lot of tuning options. You can always buy an almost complete one (need wheels and tyres maybe to run). Electric is the way to go if you are a starter. Invest on a good transmitter as a very inexpensive one will just make learning steeper. Just my .2c
What's the best beginner kit? (One with good part support, quality and durability. I like the Kyosho (high quality and part support in Greece) but it is so expensive. Losi looks cool but can't find it in Greece (and Europe in general).
Good stuff ! Ive really been looking into building a nice race inspired buggy. I don't initially have plans to race but id love to build a buggy that handles the track really nicely. I've been into nitro for so long i naturally want to keep with nitro but alot of the tracks near me are indoor and if i really want to start getting into track driving i may have to lean brushless. I really want a 1/8th buggy. Im not sure if im going to spend upwards of 600 on a kit. I was looking at the hot bodies d817 buggy which is REALLY nice to me.
Good job, brother so I’ve owned virtually all the buggies (XrAy, Mugen, HB, TLR, JQ, Agama, etc). I haven’t had and MP9 nor. Serpent buggy. One of those will be my next buggy.
I havent broke nothing on my srx8 buggy yet in almost 2 years just replacing worn out parts if that tells you something! And btw that's racing every weekend
I agree they are unique they're are super tuff the guys I run with and myself are building a track and it's huge with huge air and I hardly ever break a part but all my buddies are constantly breaking stuff and I'm the worst driver
Man you lost me at xray being known just for road cars. I raced a xray xb8 back in 2006. 1/8 scale buggys were only nitro then. They also had a 10th scale buggy at that time. They have been known as a racers brand for sure and are tough as hell.
I agree, but for my situation have a spare set of driveshafts, diffs and shocks are pretty attractive. I could build 2 sets of diffs and swap them out at the track to test what is working. Same thing with the shocks, try a different weight while the other fronts and rears are settling. Then again, Kyosho is always the best. Even their fuel tubing is miles better than everything else...
yep, kyosho is one of the cheapest cars to run in Australia, i just order parts direct from japan, dont know how price would compare to the u.s., but as you said, you get what you pay for, it has the best bearings, best shocks, easiest to drive, you dont have to chase the setup when going to different tracks
Japanese engineering is pretty damn good. What kind of track do you run on? The pricing really isnt too bad, now that I have really looked into it. It's really just the cost of the kit is expensive, not unreasonable.
I'm not new to RC cars just kind of new to racing I raced about 15yrs ago but been out awhile I raced nitro had a Duramax buggy,nitro rustler, losi xxx MT but I want something that I can do decent with right out of box?? What's the best buggy or truggy?? I also want something I can slap upgrades on eventually later on when I progress
You can get a preowned losi buggy kit at a lesser price. Reason behind me saying preowned kit is, there is not a lot to upgrade. You are going to wanna get fast since you are racing and a lot of times, you hit something hard. RTR (a prebuilt lower quality version) is not meant for racing and you will replace parts more often than not. And if you upgrade, it will cost you even more than the kit version to even be the KIT's level of durability. That is why most people who have been in the hobby, tell you to get the kit rather. I just purchased the 8ight Nitro RTR to jump back into the hobby. I checked and the 3.0 which this seems based on came out in 2013 and the 4.0 in 2015. What're your thoughts on a possible 5.0 later this year?
To be honest. I really think a 5.0 is on the way. I haven't bought the 4.0 for that reason. I can wait another 6 months or even a year for the 5.0. Or at the very least get the 4.0 for $350 when the 5.0 comes out. I do think a 5.0 could come out in the next 6-10 months, not sure though!
Xray is rare to see at local club races because it's expensive. Arguable the most expensive platform, multiple guys in my state have tried to be sponsored by Xray and they all have claimed even with a discount the platform is simply too expensive.

That's also true. Breaking something doesn't happen very often as it is in 1/8 scale. It is overall more expensive though, no matter how you cut it. On the other hand, it's not like maintaining real race cars costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
no im not saying replacing broken parts, i mean you replace far less wearing items on the kyosho then you do any other car, eg. diff seals, diff gears, out drives, dogbone pins, universals, bearings, suspension bushes...
In the long run I think it could be cheaper, but the upfront cost out-weighs that in my mind. A $130 difference up front is pretty significant, I think. Although, just because it can be more expensive doesn't mean it's a bad thing or not worth it. Kyosho is just the best... hah
Although this is a great video most guys hunting on RUclips for their first rc will probably be better off with a RTR. Also, he mentions how a couple of the buggies are already out of date. Guys!, the advancements in 8th scale are not making some great leap like 10th scale did a while back from going from rear engine to mid engine. 8th scale buggy design hasn't evolved much since the early 2000s. Pillow ball suspension was a unique new thing, that's about it. Anyway, I race a 2008 odonnell Z01B at the club level and maintain in the top 5 out of 30 to 40 guys with the latest and greatest. Also hop up parts of aluminum and graphite can make your RTR lighter etc so you don't need a new ride every two years.
I was think it to get that one but the kiosho is way better you got more adjustments and in the suspension than the lossi for 100.oo more you get moro more quality.
Mbx7r is probably the best value for a club racer or someone just getting into nitro imho. You'll always see a few of them at the track which is nice if you're in a pinch and need to bum a part, or just want to share setup tips.
Yuichi Kani is Kyosho head Designer and has been since the inferno dude . and sum of ur knowledge is off. Spencer Rifkin won the r.o.a.r champs in Texas , and x ray has been making 8th Off road since like 04 06 . nice try tho and it's a good idea what u are doing . and the AgamA is a stellar buggy. better than the TLR to. from experience. keep trying tho just make sure ur on point with facts..
Yes, that is exactly what I was trying to say about Kyosho. One Japanese guy has been working on the same, win-ingest platform ever. It was Rifkin that won, you are right, but he was driving an AE buggy and that was the point I was trying to make. Sorry, I was wrong about xray making buggies for a short time. I just have never seen one in person. I also don't remember seeing any for sale anywhere on the internet before the last 12 months. Agama's must be popular in your region? The Sworkz line up the s35-3 is a killer package and the sworkz shock package is hands down top tear from assembly to action . i have had many sworkz kits tlr kits and ae kits down to even custom works. And the sworkz stuff blows all above mentioned away. There aluminum is 7075 they have the strongest carbon i have ever seen and the plastics are the strongest yet do not ware like most plastics do. Your way way off by saying that sworkz is not good or that you dont care for them . you need to build one and wheel it . your mind will change in a heart beat
I have to admit, I agree with you. I've realized and learned a lot about the kits I kind of undermined in this video since I have uploaded it. It's a respectable kit, like the Agama. I'm considering pre-ordering the new Mugen and making lots of content again.
Kyosho isn't the most expensive necessary because of the durability. Made in Japan plain and simple all the others are made in China. China is cheaper to make than Japan ,that's really it everything else ....well call it what you will
Yes I agree, but then the Xray is made in Europe, right? Kyosho is just the best, that's why they can charge more. For example, a very high-end Seiko is comparable to some Rolex's. Japanese engineering excellence is very high.
Okay I didn't think about X-ray... Kyosho is most expensive because that is what people will pay. Being the "best" is an opinion. I may argue that your money goes further if a company doesn't completely revise it's car/truck/buggy/truggy/ ect and keeps what works. And there it goes again. What I think "works" may be completely dif. than what you believe works. I would have to look at Sales of all Vehicles to tell if Kyosho is selling more than others. Never owned an MP9 (did own a Mad Force and it had all the running parts off the inferno at that time and wasn't that impressed) of any recent 1/8 buggies so I can't really say what is great. Perhaps you have run all the buggies/truggies? I wish I could own 1- of each and then tell you what I thought... I have moved on to 1/5 scale 4wd buggies. still have many NIB .21 engines so perhaps someone could tell me what is the "best" to get?

Now if I bought the rtr buggy, chances could have been I bought some more parts for replacement and plus your car won't handle as good as the pre owned kit which has a lot of tuning options. You can always buy an almost complete one (need wheels and tyres maybe to run). Electric is the way to go if you are a starter. Invest on a good transmitter as a very inexpensive one will just make learning steeper. Just my .2c

What's the best beginner kit? (One with good part support, quality and durability. I like the Kyosho (high quality and part support in Greece) but it is so expensive. Losi looks cool but can't find it in Greece (and Europe in general).

Ive really been looking into building a nice race inspired buggy. I don't initially have plans to race but id love to build a buggy that handles the track really nicely. I've been into nitro for so long i naturally want to keep with nitro but alot of the tracks near me are indoor and if i really want to start getting into track driving i may have to lean brushless. I really want a 1/8th buggy. Im not sure if im going to spend upwards of 600 on a kit. I was looking at the hot bodies d817 buggy which is REALLY nice to me.
Good job, brother so I’ve owned virtually all the buggies (XrAy, Mugen, HB, TLR, JQ, Agama, etc). I haven’t had and MP9 nor. Serpent buggy. One of those will be my next buggy.

I agree they are unique they're are super tuff the guys I run with and myself are building a track and it's huge with huge air and I hardly ever break a part but all my buddies are constantly breaking stuff and I'm the worst driver

Man you lost me at xray being known just for road cars. I raced a xray xb8 back in 2006. 1/8 scale buggys were only nitro then. They also had a 10th scale buggy at that time. They have been known as a racers brand for sure and are tough as hell.

I agree, but for my situation have a spare set of driveshafts, diffs and shocks are pretty attractive. I could build 2 sets of diffs and swap them out at the track to test what is working. Same thing with the shocks, try a different weight while the other fronts and rears are settling.
Then again, Kyosho is always the best. Even their fuel tubing is miles better than everything else...
yep, kyosho is one of the cheapest cars to run in Australia, i just order parts direct from japan, dont know how price would compare to the u.s., but as you said, you get what you pay for, it has the best bearings, best shocks, easiest to drive, you dont have to chase the setup when going to different tracks
Japanese engineering is pretty damn good. What kind of track do you run on? The pricing really isnt too bad, now that I have really looked into it. It's really just the cost of the kit is expensive, not unreasonable.

I'm not new to RC cars just kind of new to racing I raced about 15yrs ago but been out awhile I raced nitro had a Duramax buggy,nitro rustler, losi xxx MT but I want something that I can do decent with right out of box?? What's the best buggy or truggy?? I also want something I can slap upgrades on eventually later on when I progress
You can get a preowned losi buggy kit at a lesser price. Reason behind me saying preowned kit is, there is not a lot to upgrade. You are going to wanna get fast since you are racing and a lot of times, you hit something hard. RTR (a prebuilt lower quality version) is not meant for racing and you will replace parts more often than not. And if you upgrade, it will cost you even more than the kit version to even be the KIT's level of durability. That is why most people who have been in the hobby, tell you to get the kit rather. I just purchased the 8ight Nitro RTR to jump back into the hobby. I checked and the 3.0 which this seems based on came out in 2013 and the 4.0 in 2015. What're your thoughts on a possible 5.0 later this year?
To be honest. I really think a 5.0 is on the way. I haven't bought the 4.0 for that reason. I can wait another 6 months or even a year for the 5.0. Or at the very least get the 4.0 for $350 when the 5.0 comes out.
I do think a 5.0 could come out in the next 6-10 months, not sure though!
Xray is rare to see at local club races because it's expensive. Arguable the most expensive platform, multiple guys in my state have tried to be sponsored by Xray and they all have claimed even with a discount the platform is simply too expensive.

That's also true. Breaking something doesn't happen very often as it is in 1/8 scale. It is overall more expensive though, no matter how you cut it. On the other hand, it's not like maintaining real race cars costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
no im not saying replacing broken parts, i mean you replace far less wearing items on the kyosho then you do any other car, eg. diff seals, diff gears, out drives, dogbone pins, universals, bearings, suspension bushes...

In the long run I think it could be cheaper, but the upfront cost out-weighs that in my mind. A $130 difference up front is pretty significant, I think. Although, just because it can be more expensive doesn't mean it's a bad thing or not worth it. Kyosho is just the best... hah

Although this is a great video most guys hunting on RUclips for their first rc will probably be better off with a RTR. Also, he mentions how a couple of the buggies are already out of date. Guys!, the advancements in 8th scale are not making some great leap like 10th scale did a while back from going from rear engine to mid engine. 8th scale buggy design hasn't evolved much since the early 2000s. Pillow ball suspension was a unique new thing, that's about it. Anyway, I race a 2008 odonnell Z01B at the club level and maintain in the top 5 out of 30 to 40 guys with the latest and greatest. Also hop up parts of aluminum and graphite can make your RTR lighter etc so you don't need a new ride every two years.

I was think it to get that one but the kiosho is way better you got more adjustments and in the suspension than the lossi for 100.oo more you get moro more quality.

Mbx7r is probably the best value for a club racer or someone just getting into nitro imho. You'll always see a few of them at the track which is nice if you're in a pinch and need to bum a part, or just want to share setup tips.

Spencer Rifkin won the r.o.a.r champs in Texas , and x ray has been making 8th Off road since like 04 06 . nice try tho and it's a good idea what u are doing . and the AgamA is a stellar buggy. better than the TLR to. from experience. keep trying tho just make sure ur on point with facts..
Yes, that is exactly what I was trying to say about Kyosho. One Japanese guy has been working on the same, win-ingest platform ever. It was Rifkin that won, you are right, but he was driving an AE buggy and that was the point I was trying to make.
Sorry, I was wrong about xray making buggies for a short time. I just have never seen one in person. I also don't remember seeing any for sale anywhere on the internet before the last 12 months.
Agama's must be popular in your region? They have always came off as a cheaper alternative, in my experience. I guess it is not the same in the EU?

The Sworkz line up the s35-3 is a killer package and the sworkz shock package is hands down top tear from assembly to action . i have had many sworkz kits tlr kits and ae kits down to even custom works. And the sworkz stuff blows all above mentioned away. There aluminum is 7075 they have the strongest carbon i have ever seen and the plastics are the strongest yet do not ware like most plastics do. Your way way off by saying that sworkz is not good or that you dont care for them . you need to build one and wheel it . your mind will change in a heart beat

Okay I didn't think about X-ray... Kyosho is most expensive because that is what people will pay. Being the "best" is an opinion. I may argue that your money goes further if a company doesn't completely revise it's car/truck/buggy/truggy/ ect and keeps what works. And there it goes again. What I think "works" may be completely dif. than what you believe works. I would have to look at Sales of all Vehicles to tell if Kyosho is selling more than others. Never owned an MP9 (did own a Mad Force and it had all the running parts off the inferno at that time and wasn't that impressed) of any recent 1/8 buggies so I can't really say what is great. Perhaps you have run all the buggies/truggies? I wish I could own 1- of each and then tell you what I thought... I have moved on to 1/5 scale 4wd buggies. still have many NIB .21 engines so perhaps someone could tell me what is the "best" to get?
