    The dragonfly is insane. It has some super fast "propulsion". Imagine a plane. Normally the fastest planes still need a few seconds to accelerate. The dragonfly goes from zero to close high speed almost instantly. Imagine a car going from 0 to 150 miles an hour in half a second ("hyper" cars that cost over 2 million dollars break the 3 second barrier in 0 to 60 miles an hour). Besides it can go up, backwards or to the sides more efficiently than any helicopters and can stop almost instantly as well. No flying object made by mankind is as efficient as a dragonfly in the air. Not even drones.

    • @Noxielle
      @Noxielle 3 года назад +15

      That’s when we do design drones they’re using the dragonfly as a referrence and are trying to mechanically replicate this amazing specimen

    • @kevinmathewson4272

      They can accelerate so fast because they are so small. *Yeesh I'm a buzzkill

    • @john3260
      @john3260 2 года назад +7

      It's because of their lightweight mass. More mass = more inertia = more force needed to accelerate = less acceleration if given insufficient mass.

    • @ardaozcan98
      @ardaozcan98 2 года назад +7

      The 'fastness' you mention is mostly about scale. As you go smaller seemingly everything gets stronger faster and more agile. This is because mass scales cubically while strength and thus forces generated can only be scaled quadratically. As you go larger inertial forces get more dominant compared to other forces and create the illusion that stuff is moving slower. Dragonflies are amazing creatures regardless.

    Impressive creature, one came around a corner once, flew straight in my face, it was startled me too, it stopped in mid air like it was nothing, then it observed me for one or two seconds and then it shot away zigzagging. I felt like an arrow was flying into my face... I felt honored it scanned me for a few seconds and flew away lol.

      This reminds me of what I've read about certain vipers. It's not just faster than you, it's faster than you can think. A viper can strike in less time than it takes your eyes to send signals to your brain, not even counting processing time. Dragonflies are even faster. If you think it scanned you for a few seconds, that means it studied you extensively. It might have been a few seconds to you, but it could have been the equivalent of an hour to it.

  • @Randquez

    I have a dragonfly that I'm keeping. It came to me at our home and flew inside an open door. I knew it was a female because she had the end of the tail for laying eggs. I knew her time was close, so I decided to keep her safe from larger predators. She lasted three days with me before she passed, with each day becoming more and more sluggish in her movements. Her colors were brilliant with florescent blue and green highlights, and her eyes were iridescent. Shortly after she died, her colors began to fade, and she folded her legs close to her body. She is now dark brown, light brown, and black. I thanked her for coming to me and allowing me to hold her when she was alive. I still hold her little body, but now it's only to study her intricate shape and delicate wings. I have come to find that she is far more advanced than any modern flying machine that we have today. Did she have a male partner? Did she lay her eggs? Did she have a name? Perhaps someday I will know those things, but not today. I hope she knows the joy she has given me, even if it was only for a short time. Her soul has gone, but here spirit will remain with me forever. . .
    RMV

    • @reliantncc1864
      @reliantncc1864 2 года назад +3

      You don't know anything about "modern flying machines." The innovations in flight which we saw in the 1920s and 1950s make anything in the "natural" world look pathetic. We broke the animal records for flight almost as soon as we managed flight at all. Then in just 50 years we broke the speed of sound, more than 10 times the speed of the fastest animal ever. I know you want to view this emotionally, because clearly you felt a connection to this insect. There's nothing really wrong with that exactly, but you drew some very wrong conclusions. First is the "more advanced" bit. Also, you thanked an insect for coming to you and allowing you to hold her? You're projecting human characteristics to an insect. This dragonfly did not come to you. It did not allow you anything. There is no volition (will) here. It will not know your joy. Joy is a concept no animal can know. They do not have lingering spirits.

    • @Randquez
