Kilkerran 12 review #49 with The Whiskey Novice

- Review number 49 and part 9 of my Bakers Dozen series has me in Campbeltown looking at Glengyle's Kilkerran 12 year old.
Glengyle is a small distillery in the scheme of things and it would appear that demand has outstripped supply where Kilkerran whisky is concerned. Certainly in the UK, expressions like this 12yr old and their 8yr olds are becoming harder and harder to get. Part of the reason is that the distillery doesn't produce at massively high levels but, and perhaps more importantly, the other reason is that they have a VERY good reputation. Everything is naturally coloured, non chill-filtered and bottled at at least 46% ABV. Just what we want right? So....what do I think of it??
Enjoy.

PS. The intro for this video is taken from an old Yellow Pages commercial which ran for years on British Television. Just in case anyone was wondering what it was.
Love it Jim! 😆 JR Hartley. The whisky’s great too.
😄 cheers mate.
Opening: brilliant done, Jim!. Whisky: Great stuff... and then compare with another great whisky . Enjoyed this review once again. Thanks, Jim
Cheers Frank. Hard to go wrong with Springbank and Glengyle 😁
This whisky is my fav non CS 12yo. The 8 CS bourbon is this whisky with dynamite in it. Can't wait to see if you review that one.
Nicely done! Just enjoying a dram of this now as I share my time with you. I think that your comments are quite reasonable, often spot-on, and I enjoy the conversational tone. Keep up the good work-and slainte!
Cheers Brian.
What a trip down memory lane! J. R. Hartley ... it'd bring a tear to a glass eye that! Hen's teeth - use that phrase all the time over here in Canada ... always get quizzical looks! ;). Great review; great comparison ... well done, Jimbo. You're still sounding a wee bit horse. Are ye well?
😄😄 aye I'm grand mate cheers. Thought you'd remember auld JR 😄😄.
Cheers mucker.
Great video and so much fun to watch you getting so excited and happy about tasting great whisky. Cool idea to be comparing it to SB 10! So sad it is hard to come by in the UK! BTW great to have subtitles at 0:57 ish! 🥰
😄😄😄 cheers Luna. I'll always get excited when Campbeltown is on the table 😁😁
Jim , glad to see that your humour is in good nick ! Thanks for the review, mate.
Cheers Judah.
Great review. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cheers Mark.
That would in fact be all there needs to be said, but thank you for elaborating why it’s a such good whisky. It’s been a while since I had this one, it was one of those bottles that got better every time I poured a dram. Yum
Cheers Menno. I think all Kilkerran just gets better the further down the bottle it goes. This has certainly been the case in those which I've owned.
Great Video. Only just opened a bottle of Kilkerran 12 and enjoyed nosing and sipping along to hear your notes and compare to what I was getting along the way. Great stuff and the Springbank 10 is not bad either ;D
😁 cheers Gary. Enjoy.
Great review and I loved the shear pleasure you showed as you tasted the two together. Those are two of my very favorites! Unfortunately, both of those bottles had a major leak and were found empty in my cabinet after a short while. I just go through them too fast because I can't reach past either of them. I don't think I've had them both at the same time, but that will be a new goal. I picked up the Kilkerran Heavily Peated batch #1 that I have been saving and now that is as rare as gold here in the US.
Cheers Bud. Yeah they really are incredibly hard to reach past aren't they. I try to hold onto mine as a treat to myself from time to time.
I came across a store just last week that had the 8yr old (bourbon matured), the 12yr old and the Heavily Peated batch 2. I left with the Heavily Peated but I will go back once I start getting paid again.
Great review Jim I had a sample of the 12 loved it haven't tried the SB10 yet its on my list lol. You must of enjoyed finishing those 2 drams after filming lol stay safe
Definately mate. While it's available, I'll always have SB 10 in my cabinet. Recently discovered a (relatively) local shop with a couple of bottles of KK12 on the shelf too. If their still there come payday....I'll be back 😁.
Cheers buddy.
Found the 8yo in Sligo and the 12yo in Mullingar both for under €55, tried to buy this years 8yo from a shop in Edinburgh and they wanted £155 😮
Great review, love both these whiskies. We have the opposite issue in Canada at the moment. Springbank 10 (or any springbank) cannot be found, but kilkeran 12 is very available! $85 (£49)
Thank you. We're at a point here now where ANYTHING Mitchell family doesn't even reach the shelves. The preorder lists pretty much see them all sold out before that.
@@WhiskeyNovice wow, I best be buying a spare of kilkerran 12 then as it will only get harder to find!
A truly wonderful whisky indeed Jim. Quite how you keep coming up with those fantastic intros is mind-boggling on its own. Cheers mate.
😄😄 cheers Alan. The ideas are running a bit thin mate. Will be in touch 😄😄
Great review Jim. Love this dram and luckily have a bottle. Missed out on the 8 unfortunately. But excited for the 16 later this year
Cheers Alan. Recently discovered an offie in Coleraine that has the 8, 12 and Heavily Peated (among other greats.) Picked up the Heavily Peated because it's the only one I didn't have but if the others are still there in a couple of weeks...I'll be back.
Another great intro, we’re loving them. Fave review too. This is a seriously good dram, one of faves ... thank goodness we’ve sourced another bottle at a normal price, cheers Jim 🥃
Cheers Hellen. Yeah they're rare but still hiding on some shelves 😄
Great review Jim. I nursed a bottle for a while, until I managed to get another 6 weeks ago through Barfly knowledge. Jumps all over the place for me, propper shape shifter. Cheers Jim.
Sure is mate. Great stuff. Cheers.
Great review Jim! Sipping along with the video, my bottle is at about the same level as your's :D Both my favs , brings a smile with each sip :)
Cheers Floyd.
Loved the review Jim 👍. Both are quality whiskies. Have still got remains of both bottles at home somewhere in my cellar.
Cheers David. They're just whiskys that I never want to end 😄
Great review, Jim! A nice side by side comparison with Springbank 10 is something I must do. Is a shame the KK12 is hard to find currently, but agree, it will be back. Thoroughly enjoying my stash of the 8CS Oloroso, but I remember the first time trying KK12 and just being "Wow... I like this a lot!" Cheers!
Cheers James. Yeah Kilkerran never ceases to amaze me. Was sipping on the Heavily Peated batch 2 last night thinking "this is easily one of my favourite peated whiskies!"
Hilarious into... you get a sub! That was my experience trying to get a bottle a few months ago. It just popped up on Amazon for about £45, so I bought one. Good stuff!
😄😄 cheers Peter. Yeah they're like Pokemon....gotta catch em all 😄
I was a little bit disappointed, that you didn't compare it to a Glenfiddich. ;)
😄😄😄
I agree with your reaction after you sipped the Springbank 10. Another Campbeltown fanboy here.
😄 cheers Peter. Yeah Springbank 10 will never cease to impress me.
Lol good old whisky Jason. I hate secondary prices but you never know where you might see it pop up. Cheers 🥃
Cheers Antonio. Yeah it does pop up from time to time. Definately worth getting when at the right price.
Great review as Jim. Always with that. N Ireland sense of humour 👍👍🥃🥃
Cheers Neil 😁
Another great video buddy 🥃
Cheers Matt.
Great intro as always & great review of 2 great whiskies ! (not sure they are so different one from the other indeed). Cheers, my friend !
Cheers Greg. Very much appreciated buddy 🙏
@@WhiskeyNovice You're very welcome, Jim....short comment this time as I'm very busy these days but I enjoyed your notes precision too as always.
