  • i got the idea to make an open-source security camera for my apartment as i've increasingly grown less fond of the spyware options from the likes of google, amazon, etc. and of course, raspberry pi came to save the day.

had someone ask for me to share the tutorial i used to make this, imma link it here. in the video i say that this tutorial is a bit misleading as it says to use motioneye OS which would not work for me. but, if it works for you, let me know! pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-security-camera/

If you are saying ZIF then you are correct. That connector does indeed require Zero Insertion Force (or nearly) to utilize. Nice video!

Why is it such a feat to use a RPi for surveillance cams when it was built to handle cameras and storage. Writing some low-level IP for intruder detection, that woul be a feat.

wouldn't necessarily say it's a feat, just what i was looking to do with it

If you're just streaming then I suppose an SD card is fine, but if you save any videos on the local device you should probably use a beefier power supply and a real hard drive. At least 1TB, and if you're only recording when motion is detected then that's probably enough. It might be a good idea to list the price breakdown on all of the components in a pinned comment.

the 16gb sd card was definitely just something i had around to get the project off the ground. definitely plan on improving it. the price listing isn't a bad idea, if i can find all the listings i used i'll be sure to add it!
