I watched this on replay. When I saw that it was almost 2 1/2 hours, I thought "no way". When I started watching, there was no way I could stop. I learned so much, as always, and I love your teaching style. A couple of people mentioned Stampin' Up white paper for Copics. I started with that paper and found that it got sticky very quickly with only a couple of coats. I then learned that it has a coating on it that can ruin your nibs. I don't know about the facts, but I did notice that when I stopped using it, I didn't have those problems. The first real class I took recommended the Cryogen, and while I thought it colored beautifully, I am a card maker. As you mentioned, the off white quality didn't work well for me. After that, I was directed to Neenah, and used that for years until another teacher highly recommended the Hammermill. That doesn't work for me, and until you talked about it, I thought it was me. Thank you for giving so many options, and teaching the good and bad of each one. This allows for a much more educated way to chose the right paper for me.
Music to my ears; thank you, Anne! Thanks for the info about the coating on Stamping Up paper. This is the first I’ve heard about the coating but it makes sense because I believe the SU markers are not refillable. By the time that coating builds up, you may be ready for a new marker? The SU paper may have been developed for their waterbased pens??? I had the SU paper confused for Spectrum Noir paper during the stream. Wish I could go back and clarify that.
Me too I’ve tried the hammermill based on recommendations and..I regret it cause I bought 3 packs and i was shocked, it was hell, I managed to get nice blends but it took FOREVER and too much ink and pressure, I thought i was the problem cause everyone liked it!!!!🤨
Thanks for addressing my copic quality question. It's nice to actually have an answer and some compassion towards them. I do love my copics. They have just been so frustrating since I got mine. I think if they weren't as expensive as they are, it wouldn't be such a big deal. But close to $1500 plus refills and replacing markers frequently, it's just frustrating. I get it and will keep trying though. ❤ I'm not giving up on them yet!
I totally understand and to be frank, I think Copic would do better if they publicly addressed the problem, made good with their customers, and made a big deal about high quality standards. Just think of how loyal you’d be if they treated you right and then multiply that by the number of customers affected worldwide. Their current approach just feels like a dumb move, especially with other brands creeping up on them.
Oh my goodness, less than 8 mins in and you explained why I dislike the old style marker paper because I'd tried to do exactly what you described - new school blending on old school paper. As much as I love the quick sketchy architecture and fashion design images it's definitely not what I want as my main paper. I think I have samples of the Stillman & Birn papers so I definitely need to check that out, and also pull some of my bristol board out as well - but I'm definitely going to add some X-Press It paper to an online shop to check that out
Awesome! Let me know what you think after testing your paper stash. I don't love any of the other greek letter S&B papers for markers. Zeta works the best with markers but I do like the other versions for sketching.
@@AmyShulke I managed a little bit last night and kinda did things the "wrong" way as I tried the S&B paper first and didn't see what was so amazing about it, but then I tried bristol board and The Wall paper, and finally the old sketchbooks I'd been using and I _then_ noticed the difference I have all the copic markers so I did the same colour testing you did and it seems like so far The Wall is going to be good for me to get into the habit of using markers more often and developing skills, while the S&B book leans towards more detailed rendering with many more layers on it so we'll see :)
I've seen some really good stuff done on Wall. It's not for me right now but I know if I'd had it back in college, it would have been my nothing-compares-all-time-favorite back then. Good luck to you!
Amy, I am really enjoying how thorough you are in your teaching. I have had prismacolor alcohol markers, some of them for 20 years! I only used them to do large blocks of color behind colored pencils that I used for detailing. No formal experience or training. I did take one art class in college as part of an interior design course. Conveniently, the professor had us purchase the yellow pad of Strathmore bristle board! I still have it. I have been struggling with the idea of buying copics, but I feel like since I've already purchased X-press it at the recommendation of another artist, I'm going to get my use out of the Prisma color markers.... For now. I also have prismacolor premium water-based, color pencils. I hope these will work. I am pretty sure from watching your videos that my Albrecht Durer and inktense will not work with x-press it. I will be signing up for a class soon. I just haven't decided which one yet! One of my draws to your work is the fact that you do work in realism which is more my thing as opposed to comic book, greeting card style. The internet's a wonderful thing. I'll keep watching. 😀👍
I worked with a combination of Prismacolor Markers and Copics while I built my collection. They're good markers, just not refillable. When one dried out, I replaced it with a similar Copic color. Way before that, I had DeSign and ChartPak markers and replaced them gradually with Prismacolors, LOL. Do what you can when you can :)
I ordered a large pad of Croma marker paper which I found excellent. I've used the entire pad and now I cannot find it anywhere, but if you see if buy it.
I'll keep a look out for it. Never heard of the brand and never heard of the markers either... so I'm kinda skeptical that it's another knockoff brand, but every company has to start somewhere. I'll try it if I see it.
Wonderful chat, thanks. I learned a lot. Like most of us, we get sick and tired of buying and testing new papers only to find out they are no good. Thanks for being our guinea pig! Have you ever tried markers on Duralar? It's like a see through vellum, not really like paper at all. I think I will do some testing on it when my markers arrive. I will also try Fabriano Studio and my favorite Strathmore 300 Bristol. Oh, and I'm liking Legion Rising Mount Board 2 ply for colored pencil work, I will test markers on that too. :)
@@AmyShulke I rec'd the 48 markers. They have the brush tips and are from Ohuhu (don't judge, folks!) I previously had owned Prismacolor markers from years ago but found they don't blend well with their chisel tips. I tried the markers on the Legion Rising Mount 2 ply paper and they were perfect! I chose analogous shades and they blended super well! And colored pencils went well on top to complete the blending. When I first found out about Legion papers about a year ago I ordered their sample packs in various thicknesses and surfaces, as I wanted to work with colored pencil paper that suited me (not other RUclipsrs) as while it is down to quality, it's also down to a personal 'like'. I like Bristol papers just fine and have been using them for years with good results and they are cheap and available, but found that Legion Rising Mount is softer, almost padded and accepts many layers but is very high quality. And now found out this paper works well with markers. I really like the bright white as of course everything is much more vibrant as a result. Hope that helps.
Thank u so much for this VERY informative video. I watched it twice in one day and the second time I took notes. Wondering if you could recommend a paper for downloading colouring PDF’s. Some Colouring books have PDF’s and I would like to use my Copics as I don’t use them in my colouring books. I like to use mixed media so would love a recommendation. I have the Neena, and Hammermill as well as the Transotype. Would be happy to purchase more papers if a better one is suited. Looking forward to embarking on this new journey of colouring with my Copics now. FYI.. I also weigh them and keep an inventory. I have had a third of my whole set dry out within 3 months of owning them!
Sorry for the delay, I missed this comment somehow. I print my own digital stamps onto either XPress It or smooth Bristol and that's about the same as you're doing with PDF pages. It really depends upon your printer and how thick of a paper it can handle. I'm not a fan of mixed media paper as most brands are more friendly to water than alcohol. It tends to overly thirsty, sucking moisture from your markers and then it allows the ink to bleed beyond the outlines. It's not the worst paper ever but it's not something I recommend either. I really don't like Hammermill. It doesn't release ink well for blending-- which is exactly what makes it great for printers and copy machines. It's not an art paper and I suspect most card makers like it for the color and price, rather than the marker compatibility. The Transotype (250 gsm) is great paper. I don't think it's as good as XPI and it's been hard to find here in the US recently but if you have a stash of it, use that. Let me know if I missed something. Again, I apologize for missing your questions.
My favorite is the Strathmore Bristol! Because the Xpress It reads gray to me. And pencil is better for me on Strathmore. I confess to using Neenah and Hammermill for small card projects, because of the cost and they double as card bases and layers. 😁 I feel Copics plus my skill makes up for the less than great paper. 😂😂. What a great rundown! ❤❤
Yep, the bluish-grayish cast to XPI is also present while the ink is still wet which I forgot to mention in the stream. Glad you appreciated the rundown. Any other papers you like? I know you color a ton of stuff every month. What's your most frequent paper?
Most of my coloring just now is in coloring books! Which have a very mixed bag of papers! And I am doing almost exclusively pencil coloring as well. But, you are inspiring me to get my Copics cleaned and juiced again! I prefer the Strathmore Bristol or….Beitfang (?) Bristol because I use mixed media rather than just Copic. For tiny stamps for cards, I usually just use Neenah or Hammermill because it works for me. I do have a stash of Cryogen, but I am not sold on it, actually. Anything large I color is extremely detailed and pencils work so much better than fat Copics. 😂😂 Funny story, I colored with Copics for the first time on Strathmore Bristol accidentally, and it worked so well, I went out and bought several pads to trim down and use for digital stamp coloring! Full disclosure, I rediscovered counted cross stitching last year, and am re-addicted to that at the moment, meaning coloring has taken a back seat! 😢😂😊 Keep up the great work, Amy! You are an EXCELLENT teacher and source of information. I watched several of your older videos this morning while I practiced some layering with Faber Castel Polychromos pencils. ❤❤ I am not as used to them as I am Prismacolors. But I love how they work!
If you're referring to their Deleter line, the two I've tried are old school, thinner papers for marker sketching rather than intensive blending. It's good paper if you're working fast and light but inappropriate for most colorists.
I have used something B&R but not in a while. We moved 2 years ago and I downsized my paper collection at that time. I'm about to start using a variety of papers and I'll add it to my list.
Thanks for info. So what are some good copic marker brands? I have no clue! I'm so new to the art world it's painful LOL. I picked up one from Hobby Lobby just to see what a marker was like....Masters Touch brand. Thank you.
I like Copic, Olo, Promarker, and while the Prismacolors aren't my favorite, I worked with them for many years. I know people really don't like to hear it but in my experience, I find there's a direct correlation between the price and the results with cheaper markers always struggling to match the results of the more expensive inks.
So I’m not at all qualified to answer this because they only stamping I’ve ever done was for local classes and I stopped in 2019. Back then, I used Memento Ink in London Fog (gray), Desert Sand (light tan), or Angel Pink (disappearing pink). All on XPress It. I’m sure there are more inks that work and there’s gotta be newer inks too. Sorry, I exclusively draw or print my own original images now.
The price depends upon your location. Copics are reasonably priced in Japan but get more expensive based on the import taxes and fees for your country. As for imitations, I’ve not found any knockoffs worth your time and money. I gave up on testing the popular Hawaii themed brand because they failed blending and lightfast tests so badly I do really like OLO markers, W&N ProMarkers, and I combined Prismacolor markers with Copic for several years as I was building my Copic collection.
Thank you for this video. I'll have to pull out my Strathmore Bristol & try it. I also need to try x-press it again. I got some of that right away when I had even less idea of what I was doing than I do now, & I wasn't super impressed. But I need to pull it out & revisit it. I've only used it a couple times, but I liked the Heffy Doodle alcohol marker paper much better. JMO, I can't stand Neenah for anything I've tried it for, including copics. Maybe it's me. Before I decided on which brand marker to buy, I bought 3-4 of a few brands, & copic immediately stood out. With what's currently out there, I'll never get another brand. I didn't do much with them, & when they cut the ink refill in half without really reducing the price, I became very disillusioned with the company, not the markers, just the company. I also began to notice more caps not fitting. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the barrel crack. I'm glad you explained about the multiple disasters being close to the factory, that makes me feel not as badly toward them & like they had really taken a dump on the customers. Although now i am very curious about what you know, but obviously can't say. lol. I have 7 or 8 25ml refills but was not in a financial position to stock up when they announced the change. I've seen more videos than I comment on, but still not a ton of them. Lord have mercy, the $$ I could have saved had I found you before the other two people I built my marker collection on. I never felt I needed the whole set, but it seems I've bought a LOT of markers I really just don't need, & don't have some ones I should have. Oh well, even though I'm disability I have precious little of it, it's only money, move on lol.
Very informative video, but actually I feel guilty for using the promarker's heavy paper and for having thought about purchasing the lightest version you just showed in your video.😂 May I ask you why won't you recommend that particular paper? Anyway, thank you so much for your help and advices❤
It's good for marker sketching and marker indication design drawings but it was never intended to hold a ton of ink. If you blend, you'll want a paper which allows more layers of marker.
Understood! Thank you for your explanation! I've never tried a lot of ink layers but actually I've found the 165 g paper quite resistant when initially I "forced" the blending with some colours combinations that I found particularly hard to do. Maybe I'll try one of the papers you recommend for better blending, because sometimes it works sometimes not😊
Is this the paper that you said is good for Copics - Curious Metallics Cryogen White 89# Cover 8.5"x11" ? I’m confused as I thought you’d stated it was no longer made?
@@BW2Color.Stephanie yes, just saying to confirm the weight as there was a lot of the lightweight paper when the plant closed. It doesn’t work for Copic. Don’t pay too much for it either;)
The alcohol ink is mixed with 91% alcohol so it blends (it’s a different ink than the Copic (sort of! lol) - cheaper in a little bottle.) I use the blower from my camera when I fool, woth yupo and acohol inks!! Lol
Glad it helped! I'm about to film a coloring session (as soon as I'm done with today's RUclips tasks) and the plan is to talk about the paper and how it behaves with the inks and then pencils. I think I'll do several different papers. So hang tight, more paper info coming.
I'll add Arches to my list of papers to demo but the short answer is: it's a very thirsty paper and it's very damaging to your nibs. Don't get me wrong, Arches is my favorite paper for watercolor but it's not great for marker.
I need more recommendations on the best drawing pads for markers (its okay of they are expensive) but I dont wark usually on bigg projects I prefer to do my full rendered pieces on sketchbooks to have them all in one place for tours and stuff i dont like having papers with art everywhere … so yeah..more sketchbook recommendations please 🥲🙏🏻
I mean i saw the full video but i need more papers like 40-50 something + please try the strathmore mixed media one (the black sketchbook with pink sticker I guess) people said its good idk

I love your attitude! Glad I could be helpful. More Strathmore Bristol info coming soon!
Maybe I'll try one of the papers you recommend for better blending, because sometimes it works sometimes not😊
Thank you very much!❣
Is this the paper that you said is good for Copics - Curious Metallics Cryogen White 89# Cover 8.5"x11" ? I’m confused as I thought you’d stated it was no longer made?
I showed Cryogen briefly but yes, it’s no longer made. They didn’t just cancel or discontinue it, the entire company closed.
So this isn’t the same paper?
@@BW2Color.Stephanie Did you find a source? Make sure it’s 89# because they also made it in a thinner weight which I think was “text weight “.
Yes. The description is in my first comment.
@@BW2Color.Stephanie yes, just saying to confirm the weight as there was a lot of the lightweight paper when the plant closed. It doesn’t work for Copic. Don’t pay too much for it either;)
your cherry pie made me hungry whahaha very nice and thank you for the information also as beginner is better learning on good paper i think
The alcohol ink is mixed with 91% alcohol so it blends (it’s a different ink than the Copic (sort of! lol) - cheaper in a little bottle.) I use the blower from my camera when I fool, woth yupo and acohol inks!! Lol
So you are saying 5 below marker paper isn't a good grab? Lol
Shhhhhhh! Don’t start giving people bad ideas!!!
You have no idea how much I needed this video, thank youuu such a life saver 🩷😭
What do you think of the arches hot pressed paper? Many people recommend it
Glad it helped!
